NKOTBSB ‘BRING IT’ TO CONSOL ENERGY CENTER

NKOTBSB will “bring it” to CONSOL Energy Center this summer for what’s being billed as “an amazing night of pop music and pop culture” and the “’BoyBandBash’ of the summer.” Combined for the first time into NKOTBSB, the ultimate boy bands -- New Kids on the Block (NKOTB) with Jonathan Knight, Jordan Knight, Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg and Danny Wood -- and Backstreet Boys (BSB) with Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell and AJ McLean -- are touring and performing together in one show. Danny Wood chatted with “Show Time” recently. Talking about NKOTBSB’s Pittsburgh concert site, CONSOL Energy Center which was named the Best New Major Concert Venue at the 2010 Pollstar Concert Industry Awards, Danny says, “It looks amazing! I can’t wait to see it. I’ll make sure I get off the bus early.” He recalls other appearances in Pittsburgh and speaks enthusiastically about local audiences. “Pittsburgh always is a very special city for us.

I love the city…it’s like a smaller Boston.” “We can relate to the people here.” Comparing Pittsburgh to the New Kids’ hometown, Boston, as well as New York and Philadelphia, Danny says, “There’s a different vibe in the Northeast.“ Fans “don’t appreciate a big head,” he explains, adding that they do appreciate “sincerity and energy” in a performance. Tweeting about the Pittsburgh show with some local fans, Danny tells them, “We bring it every night! They should expect a high energy show.” The two bands have so many hits that it was decided to let fans vote on the songs to be included in the NKOTBSB album and that’s exactly how they are deciding what to play for the concerts. Danny says, “We let the fans dictate what they want to hear.” This spring, fans got to vote on the 10 songs, five from each group, to be on the album. In addition to the top fan choices, the album includes the first newly recorded songs from the combined superboyband including the first single ~Danny Wood “Don’t Turn Out The Lights.” It also introduces a newly recorded smash hits mash-up from both groups’ repertoires. “We exchanged set lists. We are going to include all the hits in the show,” Danny says. In concert, as on the NKOTBSB album, the nine members of both bands will perform as the combined group, and there is individual time with the audience for New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys. Of NKOTBSB’s new music, Danny says, “We are sticking to what we do well… that’s pop music.” NKOTBSB will perform on a newly designed stage which one fan called, “a sexy stage for sexy men.” In addition to the main stage, there will be a catwalk extending into the seating and connecting to a smaller stage. “It will work well for what we want to do,” says Danny, which is to get as close to as many fans as possible. With Backstreet Boys touring in Central and South America and Vietnam earlier this year, the real work for NKOTBSB was to start after the fan voting concluded. If you are wondering what it might be like behind the scenes with nine, talented guys working together, Danny describes the union saying,

We bring “ it every night! They should expect a high energy show.

“It’s been a very easy collaboration so far.” “It’s fun. Its been pretty smooth.” “Both groups motivate each other as a whole.” Danny confirms that it all started when the New Kids on the Block wanted to do something big for the sold-out crowd at their concert in New York at Radio City Music Hall last year. As a treat for the audience, NKOTB had BSB join them on stage for a performance of “I Want It That Way,” a Backstreet Boys classic. The surprised crowd was electrified and what followed is this year’s NKOTBSB co-headlining tour of North America. In two performances prior to the start of the tour, NKOTBSB wowed the crowds in Times Square for New Year’s Eve and at the American Music Awards. continued on page 11

New Kids on the Block released its first album in 1986, and Backstreet Boys first album came out in Europe in 1996. Of course that means that the performers are now men rather than “kids” or “boys.”

This isn’t work. We “ get to do what we love.

I’d work for three weeks straight.

~Danny Wood

“We bring experience and pride to our performances,” says Danny. “We take pride in entertaining the crowd.” There was talk online about NKOTBSB expanding to include other bands, possibly ‘N Sync or Boyz II Men. Danny says that ‘N Sync is not part of the tour. On the buzz regarding Boyz II Men, he says that it was talked about in the early stages. “I love them,” but he adds that he doesn’t see it happening this summer. Fan demand has resulted in a schedule of more than 50 shows in just less than 12 weeks with NKOTBSB performing in Pittsburgh on June 15. After the summer tour, Danny says, “We are hoping to be doing Europe in the fall/winter. Maybe November, December would be ideal.” Talking about the schedule and the travel, Danny says he loves performing and would do a show every night. “This isn’t work. We get to do what we love. I’d work for three weeks straight.” What does Danny take on tour with him to make the most of the experience? “My kids!” he exclaims. Chance and Vega, Danny’s tween-age daughters, will be with him in Pittsburgh. He also has two teenage sons, Anthony and Daniel. “I’m focusing on raising my kids,” he says. “The best part of doing the tour is being able to share it with them.” While tickets for this once in a lifetime show last, they are available at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Box Office at CONSOL Energy Center, all Ticketmaster locations including select Giant Eagle locations, and Ticketmaster Charge-By-Phone at 1-800-745-3000.

CONSOL ENERGY CENTER’S TOURS Tickets for CONSOL Energy Center’s tours are hot and drawing visitors of all ages and interests who want to see more of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ home and the city’s newest, greenest entertainment facility. CONSOL Energy Center tours, presented by Bayer MaterialScience, walk visitors through areas of the building that fans might not get to see when they attend a game or other entertainment. For example on the PNC Legends Level, more than $1 million worth of artwork, done in collaboration with James Gallery of Pittsburgh, is on display. It includes large wall murals, 10 PNC Legendary Moments shadowboxes and photography featuring Pittsburgh Penguins players. Tours will provide guests with an exclusive look at all seating levels of CONSOL Energy Center, as well as the First Niagara, Captain Morgan and Lexus clubs, a Canadian Club Party Suite, select locker rooms and more. Based on other events taking place in the building, Suite 66 and the Visitor’s Hockey Locker Room are shown when available. These areas are of interest to many people but not ordinarily accessible to most visitors.

Guests taking a glimpse of just some of Pittsburgh’s greatest hockey moments in the Captain Morgan Club.

“The tour will highlight the environmentally friendly components of the building that qualified CONSOL Energy Center to become the first NHL Arena to receive LEED Gold Certification,” says David Peart, Vice President, Pittsburgh Penguins. continued on page 33

A variety of local and out-of-town fans have taken interest in the tour program at CONSOL Energy Center.

“Tour guides include local college students, Penguins season ticket holders and others from the Pittsburgh area who share our passion for showing off this beautiful state-of-the-art arena, in conjunction with CONSOL Energy Center staff,” says Rob Goodman, Assistant General Manager and Director of Marketing, CONSOL Energy Center/SMG. “Our tour program has been well received by a wide variety of guests. Those who have taken the tour include out-of-town fans who come to Pittsburgh for Penguins hockey games, high school and college students, local community groups and Pittsburghers who want to learn more about one of Pittsburgh’s newest attractions,” says Mr. Goodman.
