Long-Awaited Show by Jeff Lynne’s ELO to Wrap 2019 Tour in Pittsburgh By: Pam Thompson

Jeff Lynne’s ELO wraps its 20-show summer tour of North America on August 1 in the Steel City at PPG Paints Arena – a long-awaited performance for fans of the music of Electric Light Orchestra. Jeff Lynne and ELO last played Pittsburgh in October 1981, performing at the Civic Arena in support of the band’s ninth studio album, Time. ELO’s initial stop in Pittsburgh in 1974, at the Stanley Theatre supported its third studio album, On the Third Day. ELO also played the Civic Arena in 1977 on A New World Record Tour, supporting its eponymous sixth album, and in 1978 supporting its seventh album, Out of the Blue. Continued on page 4

Lyrics from “Mr. Blue Sky” likely sum up the sentiments of fans of ELO:

Mr. Blue Sky please tell us why you had to hide away for so long Where did we go wrong? Hey there Mr. Blue We’re so pleased to be with you Look around see what you do Everybody smiles at you. From “Mr. Blue Sky”

This year’s tour doubles the number of shows performed on the band’s 10-date 2018 North American summer tour that had the act playing in the U.S. for the first time in 35 years. It’s anticipated that the six-week tour, will treat audiences to the hits that Lynne created for Electric Light Orchestra in the ‘70s and ‘80s, as well as his tracks like “Handle with Care” from Traveling Wilburys’ repertoire, “When I Was a Boy” from the most recent ELO album, 2015’s Alone in the Universe, and other popular tracks written by Lynne. Jeff Lynne’s ELO’s distinctive blend of rock, pop and classical sounds, makes it one of the most iconic bands in music history. With some of the most recognizable music of the past four decades and a reputation for epic live shows, ELO has more than 20 top 40 hits across the U.S. and U.K and sales of more than 50 million records around the world. Lynne – co-founder, leader, prolific songwriter and constant in the music of ELO – reformed the group in 2014 and began touring as Jeff Lynne’s ELO. Lynne led ELO from 1972 to 1986, writing and producing almost all of the band’s songs. The 2018 U.S. tour won kudos from reviewers who cited the timelessness of the music, a set list of classic hits, gifted musical talent, and quality sound and visual production effects.

Variety wrote: “Jeff Lynne’s ELO revives ‘70s symph-pop greatness… a brilliant catalog returns to U.S. stages and gives the strings-starved Lynne led ELO people what they want. The ELO catalog speaks from 1972 to for itself… and it was a glorious thing to behold… 1986, writing in a 19-song set that reprised the closest thing to and producing truly Beatle-level pop the 1970s had to offer.” almost all of the Glide Magazine reported: “Jeff Lynne’s ELO proves timeless and spectacular… when band’s songs Lynne came out with the group, the crowd went wild. The show was loaded with virtually every top hit the band recorded. Every musician on stage was fantastic while the arrangements and sound quality almost made the audience forget they were watching a live performance and not listening to their old LP records.” The Mercury News reviewer in San Jose, Calif. stated, “Jeff Lynne, ELO deliver night of magic memories… the band’s 20-song set proved to be well worth the long wait… Lynne led his band through some 90 minutes of glorious Electric Light Orchestra classics in front of a sold-out crowd. ELO’s music still sounds light years ahead of most of the bands heard on pop music radio today.” LA Weekly wrote, “Jeff Lynne’s ELO prove that spacy pop rock is still a livin’ thing… one of the most flawless and visually stunning arena shows I’ve seen in a long time. Complete with monstrous lights, lasers and the mandatory ELO spaceship hovering behind the band on video screens, the show was as grand Continued on page 6

and engrossing as a blockbuster movie — a ’70s blockbuster movie, that is.” Houston Press said, “Jeff Lynne’s ELO is practically a religious experience for rock ‘n’ roll disciples.” The Philadelphia Inquirer reported, “For all the gifted musicians that helped achieve Lynne’s perfectionist vision, ELO was always his creation, a neonhued Frankenstein’s monster built from bits of early rock-and-roll, symphonic themes, Beatles harmonies, and disco beats. All of those pieces came together flawlessly… played to perfection.” Jeff Lynne’s ELO performed a medley of “Evil Woman” and “Mr. Blue Sky” with Ed Sheeran at the Grammy Awards program in February 2015. The reconstituted band released Alone in the Universe its first album of new material in 15 years, in November 2015. In 2017, ELO’s Lynne and past members Roy Wood, Bev Bevan and Richard Tandy, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Considered among the greatest record producers in music history, Lynne co-founded Traveling Wilburys in 1988, with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty. Eric Church to Double Down in Pittsburgh on His Birthday By: Pam Thompson

Eric Church will double down this year with two concerts in 19 North American cities, and Pittsburgh is one of them. His Double Down Tour comes in May and has Church performing two different concerts on two consecutive nights with varying set lists spanning his career’s six studio albums. The singer/songwriter marks his 42nd birthday on May 3, the same day as his first of two Pittsburgh shows at PPG Paints Arena. When the tour opened in Omaha in January, Church performed two sets, totaling 33 songs, in three hours. It’s all Church – there is no opening act on the Double Down Tour. In Kansas City, the Chief inserted Queen into his first night set list including “Another One Bites the Dust,” “Fat Bottomed Girls,” and concluding an encore with “We Are the Champions.” The Double Down Tour marks Church’s third and fourth concerts at PPG Paints Arena. He previously appeared in 2017 on his Holdin’ My Own Tour, the first time that he toured without an opening act, and initially in 2012 on The Blood, Sweat & Beers Tour, his first series of arena concerts as a headliner. His sixth studio album, Desperate Man released last fall. It topped the U.S. Country chart, peaked at No. 5 on both the Billboard 200 and in Canada, and at No. 63 in Australia. Continued on page 21

Stufish Entertainment Architects’ set designer Ric Lipson says: “Queen + Adam Lambert’s Rhapsody tour will, once again for them, expand the parameters of what a live music experience can be. This new show promises to be their most spectacular yet, an innovative and interactive celebration of the continued power of Queen’s music.”

From the Oscars to a documentary, concert covers and the comics, the musical legacy of Queen pervades entertainment.

o Queen + Adam Lambert famously opened this year’s Academy Awards ceremony in February with a medley of “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions,” which brought the celeb-packed audience to its feet. It was the first time that a rock band was tapped to open the Oscars. Bohemian Rhapsody, the biopic of the late Queen front man Freddie Mercury and the band, nominated for best film, raked in four Oscars for Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role, Achievement in Film Editing, Achievement in Sound Editing, and Achievement in Sound Mixing. In addition to winning Golden Globe Awards for Best Motion Picture Drama and Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama, the film became the top grossing music biopic of all time in December, producing more than $600 million.
