SELANNE STILL STEAMROLLING Teemu Selanne is showing no signs of slowing down at age 40. The Anaheim forward scored five points in a 5-4 win over the Colorado Avalanche on March 28, becoming the first player 40 or older in NHL history to score three times and tally two assists in one game. The five-point night matched his career-best single-game output Teemu Selanne and gave him 75 points, which was tied for eighth in the league as of March 30 and he is having the third-best season by a player 40 or older in league history. Only 40-year-olds Johnny Bucyk (83 points in 1975-76) and Gordie Howe (103 points in 1968-69) had more points than Selanne has now. The two assists gave him 701 for his career, making him the 49th player in NHL history with 700-plus assists, and he’s now tied for 29th on the all-time scoring list with 1,335 points. Selanne has helped keep the Ducks alive in the playoffs, as they sat in seventh place with 91 points as of March 30.
Teemu Selanne has certainly been helping power the Ducks to the playoffs, but the performance of right wing Corey Perry this season has him in talks for the Hart Trophy as league MVP and the Maurice “Rocket” Richard trophy as the NHL’s top goal-scorer. Perry was named the NHL’s Second Star for the week Corey Perry ending March 27 when he tallied five goals and ranked second in overall scoring with six points as the Ducks climbed to seventh place in the Western Conference standings by winning two of three games. As of March 30, Perry was tied with Tampa Bay’s Steven Stamkos for the NHL lead with 44 goals, shared first place in game-winning goals (10) and ranked fifth in points with 86. Perry has scored 12 goals so far this March, and as of March 30 he had two games left to try to tie or break Sidney Crosby’s record for most goals in a month (14), set in December 2010.

CONTINUING TO CLINCH Vancouver clinched first place in the Western Conference when they topped Nashville, 3-1, on March 29. As of March 30, they were the only team in an extremely tight race out West to have secured a postseason berth. In the Eastern Conference, Philadelphia, Washington, Boston and Pittsburgh have all clinched playoff spots. Tampa Bay needed just one point with six games remaining to earn their first postseason berth since 2007. Carolina and Toronto are both on the outside looking in, but were still in the hunt as of March 30.

RON BURKLE Ron Burkle has now added a new arena — Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center — to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world. Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 12th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have developed one of the outstanding ownership groups in all of professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his role in negotiations for the new arena deal. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for three-plus seasons and established new standards for television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits while winning acclaim as the No. 1 team in professional sports in Fan Relations. A consistent post-season threat on the ice, the Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in 2009. Young stars such as Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal and others have been signed to long-term contracts, ensuring that the team’s core will remain intact. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.

MARIO LEMIEUX Mario Lemieux always will be remembered for the magic he created on the ice, but one of the crowning achievements of his remarkable career came this season in his role as a businessman — the opening of CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins and Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue. The new arena puts the exclamation point on Lemieux’s lengthy quest to ensure the Penguins’ long-term future in Pittsburgh and provides his adopted hometown with a spectacular state-of-the-art center for professional and collegiate sports, concerts, family shows and other events. “There were so many people who contributed to this project, including local and state political leaders, local business leaders, NHL officials and, of course, our fans,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse, “but I think it’s safe to say that none of this happens without Mario Lemieux.” Even before the reality of CONSOL Energy Center, Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle had turned the Penguins into a premier NHL franchise, winning praise for off-ice business accomplishments in addition to creating a positive, player-friendly atmosphere on the hockey side. The Penguins have sold out a team-record 186 straight games, sold out every suite for three straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits. Over the summer, the Penguins were named the No. 1 team in professional sports in Fan Relations by ESPN The Magazine. Oh, and they won the Stanley Cup in 2009 — the third Cup of Lemieux’s career but his first as an owner. Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVPs trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, in addition to the two Cups. An immaculately gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. DAVID MOREHOUSE Pittsburgh native David Morehouse was named CEO of the Penguins in September and leads the team into an exciting new era at CONSOL Energy Center. Morehouse had served as team president since 2007, overseeing ticket sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development, as well as representing the team in corporate relations and governmental affairs. Under his leadership the Penguins have become one of the top organizations in professional sports — ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations and No. 5 overall as a franchise among 122 pro teams in North America by ESPN The Magazine. As team president, Morehouse implemented a brand strategy that featured a new commitment to marketing, fan interaction and community outreach, as well as a targeted focus on the team’s young fan demographic. Under his leadership, the Penguins have sold out every game for three straight seasons — the sellout streak was at 166 games entering 2010-11— while leading all U.S.-based NHL teams in local TV ratings last season and setting new standards for website traffic and social media. Morehouse joined the Penguins in December, 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project, following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill, as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He was Senior Advisor for the John Kerry for President campaign in 2004, traveling on the campaign plane and serving as Senator Kerry’s traveling chief of staff. He worked in the Clinton-Gore White House in the 1990s, and was Senior Counselor and Trip Director for Vice President Al Gore from 1999-2001. Morehouse grew up in the Beechview section on Pittsburgh. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University, and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have three children and live in Bell Acres.

RAY SHERO Ray Shero, 48, is at the vanguard of the NHL’s new breed of general managers — steeped in family hockey tradition but on the cutting-edge of new technology and modernization in hockey operations, player relations and team management. His fresh ideas and calm but firm management style helped transform the Penguins from a team that did not qualify for the playoffs in 2005-06 to one that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08 and won the Cup in 2008-09. During that time, he has moved boldly to ensure a strong future for the Penguins, signing six key members of the team’s core — Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal, Brooks Orpik and Kris Letang — to long-term contracts. Shero built on the team’s already strong foundation by adding key pieces in the 2010 offseason to set the Penguins up for long-term success. With shrewd maneuvering and an aggressive approach during the first day of free agency, he solidified the team’s blue line with the long-term signings of top-rated defensemen Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek. Shero was named GM on May 25, 2006 and one of his first acts was to declare a goal of building a team that could compete for championships on a yearly basis. He revamped the team’s hockey operations staff and structure, upgraded professional and amateur scouting, added a team operations director and opened new lines of communication with the business side of the organization. In his first season, 2006-07, Shero led his team to its first playoff berth since 2001 and a 47-point improvement in the standings — the fourth-largest improvement from one season to the next in NHL history. Building on that success, the Penguins topped 100 points for the second straight season in 2007-08, winning their first division title since 1998 and advancing to the Stanley Cup Final, where they fell to Detroit. After a rocky start in 2008-09, the Penguins rallied when Bylsma was named head coach in February, finishing 18-3-4 to earn a playoff berth and then defeating Philadelphia, Washington, Carolina and Detroit en route to the Stanley Cup. Along the way, they twice overcame 2-0 deficits in games (against Washington and Detroit), won all four seriesclinching games on the road and won two Game Sevens on the road — including the 2-1 thriller at Detroit for the Cup. Ray’s father, Fred, had won two Stanley Cups as head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers in 1974 and 1975. The Sheros are one of the few father-son tandems to appear on the Cup. The late Fred Shero also was a coach and general manager with the New York Rangers. Ray built his hockey sense and managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University, twice serving as team captain, and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. The native of St. Paul, Minn. is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

JASON BOTTERILL Jason Botterill enters his second full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position on May 22, 2009 by general manager Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockeyrelated matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top-minor league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 34, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins; his responsibilities included salary cap management, professional and amateur scouting and overseeing prospects development. Botterill’s avant-garde approach and understanding of the salary cap has been a major asset for the Penguins. Before joining Pittsburgh, Botterill worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in 1994 and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. He also played 393 career games in the AHL and IHL, recording 127 goals and 257 points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan, where he earned his MBA, and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996, helping his team win gold medals in all three tournaments. He resides in Pittsburgh along with his wife, Andrea.

In just one-plus seasons behind the bench, Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. After being promoted to Penguins head coach in February 2009, Bylsma, 40, directed the team to its third Stanley Cup in franchise history — a feat previously accomplished by legendary coaches “Badger” Bob Johnson and Scott Bowman. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season. Bylsma has the best regular-season winning percentage (.659) in team history, and is tied with Bowman for most postseason victories (23) and series victories (5). He also became the eighth-fastest head coach in NHL history to hit the 50-win mark (78 games). All-time under Bylsma, the Penguins boast a 65-31-11 regular-season record; 35-13-5 home record; 31-17-6 road mark; 40-3-3 when leading after two periods; 42-1-1 when scoring four or more goals; and 43-9-6 when scoring first. In 2009-10 the Grand Haven, Mich. native completed his first full NHL season behind the bench for Pittsburgh, leading the club to a 47-28-7 record for 101 points — breaking 100 points for the sixth time in franchise history and for the third time in the last four years — finishing only two points behind New Jersey for the Atlantic Division title. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular-season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim. He began his coaching career as an assistant with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks of the AHL in 2004-05 and made his NHL coaching debut as an assistant with the New York Islanders in 2005-06. Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh. He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son and reside in the North Hills.

TONY GRANATO Tony Granato, 46, begins his second season on the Penguins’ coaching staff. Granato, among his many responsibilities, works with the Penguins’ forwards and penalty killing units. He oversaw the NHL’s ninth-ranked penalty killing group with an 84.1-percent success rate, and second best on the road at 85.3 percent. Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato spent six seasons behind the bench for the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach from 2002-04 and 2008-09. Granato compiled a 215-104-17-16 record and led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003. Granato played 13 seasons in the NHL with the NY Rangers, Los Angeles and San Jose. In 1997, he was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for overcoming a near career-ending brain injury. In 773 career games, the feisty forward posted 248 goals, 492 points and 1,425 penalty minutes. He appeared in 79 career postseason games and helped lead Los Angeles to a Stanley Cup Final berth in 1993. Granato played four years at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgers’ Hall of Fame in 2000. Granato also played for the U.S. National team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary. Tony and his wife, Linda, are the parents of four children and reside in the South Hills.
TODD REIRDEN Todd Reirden, 39, joined Pittsburgh’s coaching staff on July 31, 2010 after coaching with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the previous two seasons. Reirden, an NHL defenseman for parts of five seasons, works closely with the team’s defensemen. Reirden, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 2009-10, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs. Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with the Bowling Green Falcons (CCHA) — his alma mater. He was a teammate of Bylsma’s during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons at Bowling Green. Selected by New Jersey in the 12th round (242nd overall) of the 1990 NHL Entry Draft, Reirden played professionally for 13 seasons, retiring after the 2006-07 campaign with Graz EC of the Austrian Hockey League. He appeared in 183 NHL games with Edmonton, St. Louis, Atlanta and Phoenix, recording 46 points (11+35) and 181 penalty minutes. Todd and his wife, Shelby, have one son.

GILLES MELOCHE Former NHL goaltender Gilles Meloche is in his fifth season as the Penguins’ full-time goaltending coach and 25th with the organization. Meloche has been instrumental in developing Marc-Andre Fleury into a Stanley Cup-winning netminder. Meloche served as a Penguins scout from 1989-2006 and also doubled as a goaltending coach/consultant during much of that time. He was also part of the staff when the Penguins won Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. A native of Montreal, Quebec, Meloche spent 18 seasons as an NHL goaltender with Chicago, California, Cleveland, Minnesota and Pittsburgh. He played the final three seasons of his career in Pittsburgh following a 1985 trade. Meloche appeared in 788 NHL games during his career, posting a record of 270-351-131 with a 3.64 goals-against average. In 45 career playoff games, he posted a 21-19 record and a 3.48 goals-against average. Gilles and his wife, Sophie, reside in Pittsburgh. MIKE LANGE One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange enters his 35th season with the Penguins and will handle radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.
PHIL BOURQUE Two-time Stanley Cup champion Phil Bourque begins his seventh season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75+89) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88+111) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for FSN Pittsburgh’s coverage of Penguins hockey.
BOB GROVE After a 17-year career as the Penguins beat writer for the Washington Observer-Reporter, Bob Grove joined the team’s radio broadcasts in 1998 as a frequent studio host/co-host and is now in his sixth season as full-time host of the pre- and post-game broadcasts and intermissions on the Penguins Hockey Network. Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or Icetime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts “Heineken Hockey Hour” and “Bob Grove’s Hot Stove” on Penguins Radio at 105.9-HD 2.

Mark Letestu skated away with Rookie of the year honors for the Penguins this season, but one of the reasons why was that the Penguins’ new home, the CONSOL Energy Center, wasn’t eligible for consideration. “It’s a great building, not just for the hockey team but also for the city,” Penguins president David Morehouse assessed as Regular Season One in the facility was drawing to a close. “It has exceeded the high expectations that we had for ourselves. “You can’t say enough about

Morehouse cited the CONSOL Energy Center is being considered for Sports Venue of the Year by the Sports Business Journal as a testament to the building’s performance. “We’re competing with a lot of facilities that spent about a billion dollars more than we did, so it’s good to see that kind of stuff,” he said. What was spent on the CONSOL Energy Center was intended to incorporate the best of what the Penguins had observed of arenas in St. Paul, Minn., Columbus, Ohio and Glendale, Ariz., and at the same time create for Pittsburgh a distinctive destination point. “We definitely wanted the openness that we achieved with the concourses,” Morehouse said. “We wanted an 18,000-seat arena but we also wanted it to feel intimate for the fans and for the players on the ice and we think we achieved that. Only having one level of suites brought the [upper-level] seats down closer. “The comfort, I think, is beyond anything that we saw [in the facilities they toured pre-design and pre-construction of CONSOL]. We purposely wanted more leg room and wider seats. And then the technology that we brought into the building, you

could hear about it and have consultants tell you about it but until you actually see it you don’t fully appreciate how great it is.” That’s been apparent during hockey games, and when the Eagles have played in the CONSOL Energy Center as well as the Flyers. “These concerts that come in, they rig in less than 12 hours,” Morehouse said. “Giant video boards and all of the different things that Bon Jovi brought here, that Paul McCartney bought here. Look at the lineup we’ve been able to attract in our first year. It’s the who’s who of Rock-n-Roll.” That lineup included Elton John. “It’s been a tremendous success, far beyond anything we’ve imagined,” Morehouse said. “We’ve had Wilkes-Barre/Scranton [the Penguins’ AHL affiliate] play here. We’ve had Robert Morris play here, high school hockey. We’ve had little kids play here. We’ve been taking advantage of the ice, also.” The Pitt and Duquesne basketball teams also drew crowds to CONSOL in Year One, as is arena football’s Pittsburgh Power. “And the food quality has been tremendous,” Morehouse added. “I go upstairs to get a chicken barbeque because they don’t have them where I sit.” Add the chicken barbeque and the kielbasa grinder then, to CONSOL Energy Center’s lengthy list of creature comforts. There are plenty of others. “Players who come in from other organizations, you just see their jaw drop when they walk through,” Morehouse said. “You hear from visiting teams, what we hear from the players is they’re very happy to play here.” That said Morehouse is hoping the Penguins will eventually be able to give the arena a few more tweaks as they commence their postseason history at the CONSOL Energy Center, particularly as it relates to what hangs from the ceiling. “We could use a couple more banners,” he said. “We have a lot of space to fill.”

BABY CHANGING STATIONS Baby changing stations are available in all restrooms, located on all seating levels of CONSOL Energy Center.
BAGS, BACKPACKS AND PURSES For security purposes, only small personal bags (purses, baby or diaper bags, etc.) will be permitted inside CONSOL Energy Center and all items are subject to search upon entrance. Large bags, coolers, backpacks and sealed packages, including gifts for performers and/or athletes of any kind are not permitted unless otherwise noted on the individual event page.
BANNERS AND SIGNS Banners and signs are permitted for most events, providing they are appropriate, as deemed by building management. Signs must not be commercial in nature or utilize wood, metal or other types of objects for support. FAMILY RESTROOMS Family restrooms are available on all levels of CONSOL Energy Center near sections 106/107, 108, 115, 121, 213, 225, party suite 44 and suite 13.
FOOD AND BEVERAGES No food or beverages of any kind are permitted to be brought into CONSOL Energy Center. Concession stands located throughout the arena sell a wide variety of food, alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages. Patrons requesting to bring in outside food or beverage due to health conditions should contact Guest Services in advance at info@consolenergycenter.com. Pennsylvania State Law prohibits the sale of alcohol to all persons under the age of 21. Guests are required to show proper identification and proof of age when purchasing alcoholic beverages.

TAG-A-KID In the event a parent and child might be separated at a CONSOL Energy Center event, parents can register their child with the Tag-A-Kid program. A wristband with the parent’s seat location and contact number will be given to the child. Registration is available at the Guest Services office located outside section 104.
VIDEO CAMERAS Use of video or audio recording equipment is strictly prohibited. CONSOL Energy Center reserves the right to confiscate any tape or film and remove the patron from the building.
WHEELCHAIRS A limited number of wheelchairs are available for transporting guests that are disabled to their seating location. Guests can be transported from the gates to their seats. If a wheelchair is needed for the duration of the event, guests must supply their own wheelchairs. Wheelchairs cannot be reserved in advance. Upon arrival, guests can arrange for a wheelchair at any entrance of CONSOL Energy Center. Please see a CONSOL Energy Center employee to assist with wheelchair transportation.

On Saturday, October 16, sixteen youth hockey teams from the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) in the Pee Wee age group (age 11 - 12) participated in a shootout competition at CONSOL Energy Center. The event was videotaped to be shown in episodes at Penguins home games. The first round of competition featured heats between two teams striving to advance to the next round. Sixteen teams fielded five skaters shooting against the opposing team’s goalie. After each team competition, an individual shooter and goaltender squared off against the opposing team’s individual tandem for a one-on-one competition. Each winning team and pair of individuals advanced to the next round of eight teams/tandems. The format repeated as teams and individual pairs advanced through the quarterfinal heats to move on to the semi-finals. Robust competition marked the semi-final round for teams and individual tandems. The remaining two teams and individual tandems then had to “leave it all on the ice” in vying for the championship. Early in the second intermission of each Penguins home game the various heats in the competition will be featured. Enjoy each episode.

In its first few months, CONSOL Energy Center also hosted such acts as Lady Gaga and The Eagles; was home to the Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase with Robert Morris; and featured multiple NCAA Division I basketball games, including the “City Game” between Pitt and Duquesne and the Big East/SEC Challenge. In its first season of operation, CONSOL Energy Center also will be home to the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League — bringing indoor football back to the city for the first time in almost 20 years. A funding plan for the new arena project was completed in March, 2007, thanks to the combined efforts of Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, among others. The Sports & Exhibition Authority owns the building on behalf of the city and county, and the Penguins have the lease. The new arena is managed by SMG, with Jay Roberts serving as general manager.

PENNSYLVANIA STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS All three Penguins Cup winners — Mars (Class A), Bishop Canevin (Class AA) and Upper St. Clair (Class AAA) returned to Pittsburgh victorious over the Flyers Cup winners in their respective classes in a turnpike battle at the Ice Line Arena in West Chester. This is the first time the Penguins Cup winners have swept the state Mars (Class A)
championships since Mount Lebanon, Pine-Richland and Quaker Valley did so in 2006. Mars defeated Springfield 5-2 in the first matchup of the 2011 Pennsylvania Cup. Mars’ Nick Blaney got on the board first with assists from Austin Heakins and Joseph Bender. Springfield tied the game early in the second when Dave Allen found his way past Mars goaltender Tyler Stepke. That was as close as the game would get, as Mars

answered with two goals apiece from Elliot Tisdale and Blaney, who picked up a hat trick on the night. Springfield would get a late goal from Connor Phillips to make the final score 5-2. Planets goalie Tyler Stepke played great in net, stopping 28 of the 30 shots he faced. It took more than a period and a one goal deficit for Bishop Canevin to find the back of the net in the Class AA matchup with Council Rock South, but the Crusaders

Walsh then found the back of the net 11 minutes later to give Bishop Canevin the 2-1 lead. With Council Rock goaltender Steve Jastrow pulled for the extra attacker, Walsh and Peter Karney each scored empty net goals to seal the deal for the Crusaders’ state championship. The game of the day was a Class AAA overtime thriller between Penguins Cup winner Upper St. Clair and Flyers Cup winner LaSalle College. LaSalle got on the board early when Nick Popoff scored with assists to Nick Burt and Frank Trocino, but Upper St. Clair tied the game later in the first when CJ Murray scored on the power play thanks to assists from Stephen Gielarowski and Parker Phillips. Murray got the lone goal in the second to give USC the 2-1 lead. LaSalle’s Sean Orlando evened the score at 2-2 8:50 in the third, but the Panthers’ Gielarowski responded quickly by scoring just 28 seconds later. LaSalle tied the game late in the third when Ron Greco tallied, forcing the game into overtime. A heated battle took place in the extra period until Murray was able to complete his hat trick to give Upper St. Clair the state title by a final score of 4-3.

WHAT’S HAPPENING DEVELOPMENTAL PROGRAMS LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY With the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and Dick’s Sporting Goods over the last three years the Penguins have provided over 2,200 sets of equipment free to local youth ages 4 to 7. This year, four girls-only programs will operate along side of our standard co-ed Little Penguins program. OPEN PRACTICE The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation presented the 2010 Pittsburgh Penguins Open Hockey Practice on Thursday, December 9, 2010 at the brand new CONSOL Energy Center. The event offered a rare opportunity for over 10,000 school students in grades one through eight from across Allegheny County to see the Pittsburgh Penguins at work. Students were entertained leading up to the start of practice with informational videos about behind-thescenes aspects of the team/facility, as well as educational elements related to the game (geography, math, etc.) each student received an activity book as a takeaway.
WELLNESS TRAINING K.A.M.P. AT UPMC SOUTHSIDE Presented by UPMC Sports Medicine and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. Young hockey players were divided into groups and performed a rotation of 10-minute drills, while UPMC Sports Medicine professionals provided assessments. While the athletes trained, their parents received lectures on nutrition, concussions and sports injuries in general. Over 150 athletes and parents attended the event.

CONCUSSION PROGRAM The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, in conjunction with UPMC Sports Medicine, are prepared to announce a comprehensive program for baseline testing and concussion education for all youth sports beginning at the earliest possible ages.
PENGUINS FOUNDATION CHARITY ASSIST RAFFLE The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Penguins Foundation are pleased to host the Penguins Foundation Charity ASSIST Raffle, raising money for a variety of local charities in the western Pennsylvania area. Look for ticket sellers in their red aprons at every home game. The minimum prize each game is $2,000!
NEW SPORTS INITIATIVES — COMING IN 2011 OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES In its efforts to fight the sedentary tendencies of America’s youth, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation is excited to offer outdoor programs to promote fun and organized physical activity. The program, to be revealed in January, is designed to take advantage of the growing popularity of hockey in the tri-state area by affording young players access to existing facilities and newly constructed outdoor multi-use athletic facilities. These programs provide safe areas to play games under the supervision of established organizations. SCHOOL PROGRAMS • FIRST STRIDE In the ultimate Field Trip, participating schools will be provided with a Penguins-themed hockey experience: Students will be transported to and from a local ice arena, outfitted in full hockey equipment and learn fundamental hockey skills. The program will conclude with each child scoring their first goal! • GYM CLASS FOR A DAY This program is designed for 4th and 5th grade physical education classes and will provide basic skills and game instruction. Gym Class for a Day will transform your school gymnasium or parking lot into a dek/ball hockey rink. The Penguins will provide equipment for an ongoing P.E. Hockey Program. Penguins staff will be on hand to assist P.E. teachers in demonstrating and administering basic hockey skills and games. Each student will be provided a hockey ball and Penguins t-shirt to take home and continue practicing their skills.

THE PENGUINS GAME VAULT OCTOBER 24, 2006 • PENGUINS 4, DEVILS 2 MELLON ARENA Penguins rookie Evgeni Malkin was set to play just his fourth National Hockey League game when Pittsburgh and New Jersey met for an Atlantic Division showdown on Oct. 24, 2006 at Mellon Arena. Although his career was still in its infancy, Malkin’s play was so impressive that it was already drawing comparisons between him and Penguins Hall of Fame owner Mario Lemieux. Lemieux had that innate ability to score goals so unbelievably breathtaking that you always remember where you were and who you were with. Facing arguably the best goaltender of all-time in Martin Brodeur, Malkin scored one of those goals. Evgeni Malkin At 10:41 of the third period in a contest the Penguins led 3-2, Malkin brought the Mellon Arena crowd off its feet and nearly blew the roof off the building with a spectacular goal that was eerily reminiscent of Lemieux’s signature tally against the Minnesota North Stars in Game Two of the 1991 Stanley Cup Final. Catching a long lead pass at the New Jersey blue line from Sidney Crosby, Malkin quickly entered the zone 1-on-2 with Devils defensemen Colin White and Brad Lukowich. Right away, Lukowich attempted to line Malkin up for a big hit. Malkin simply dangled the puck around Lukowich’s skates, avoided the check and darted towards Brodeur as White hooked him from behind. As Malkin was falling on his backside, he somehow managed to turn the puck over to his backhand and tucked a shot behind Brodeur. Within seconds of the puck sliding across the goal-line and Malkin euphorically jumping into the glass pounding his fist, the color commentator calling the game for the Versus Network drew the comparison between Lemieux and Malkin: “I have to say … but shades of Mario.” After the game, even Brodeur spoke in gushing terms when asked to describe the 20-year-old Malkin’s goal. “Pretty amazing,” Brodeur said. “It was a great pass, but there are not too many guys who can control that and after that, have the presence to outmuscle a guy and shift when a guy is trying to take your head off. I thought I had it the whole way, he had nowhere to go, and he just stopped and went right around me with his reach.” Malkin’s fourth goal of the season clinched a 4-2 Pittsburgh victory that gave the Penguins their first three-game winning streak in almost a year and a half. His goal also followed earlier tallies from Crosby and fellow rookie Jordan Staal, marking the first time all three young centers scored in the same game together. 145

The Penguins players donned tuxedos and passed plates instead of pucks on March 17 at CONSOL Energy Center as they hosted the Skates & Plates Charity Gala presented by Trib Total Media to benefit the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, the Western PA Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the Mario Lemieux Foundation. Since 1986, the team’s annual benefit dinner has raised over $5 million for Pittsburgh area charities with an emphasis on medical research. “This is our signature event,” head coach Dan Bylsma said. “And it’s a very special event.” The event featured Penguins players wearing tuxedos — complete with vibrant green vests and green ties in honor of St. Patrick’s Day — and serving as waiters for the evening. Each player was assigned a table (or in some cases, two) to serve. “For us, it was for charity, but also to meet the Pens, of course,” said Karie King of attending the event for a second-straight year. “The team does such wonderful work and donates their time for the charities. Just to be able to meet them on a personal level, you just become a more avid fan. It’s really cool.” King had Penguins captain Sidney Crosby as her server last year. This year, goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury waited on her table. “Just to interact with our fans and it’s for a great cause,” Fleury said of what he enjoys the most about events like this. “People are very generous when they come down. Just to be a part of it and helping raise some money, helping this cause, I think it’s good.” Penguins newcomer James Neal captured top tip honors and bragging rights this year with Eric Godard and Marc-Andre Fleury finishing second and third respectively. Fleury also won top tip honors two years ago with Maxime Talbot. Last year, it was Sidney Crosby and Brent Johnson sharing top honors. “I take pride in getting the best tip, because it’s all going to charity,” Talbot said. “We’re lucky to have good tables as well, where they don’t care how good the service is sometimes.” continued on page 149

Talbot said that with a smile, as he actually spilled soup on himself his first year doing the event. But although the Penguins are more deft with pucks than plates, they understand the importance of this event — and enjoy every minute of it. “It’s awesome,” Mike Rupp said. “When you have an opportunity to see firsthand the difference it makes in people’s lives, I mean, that’s what we all do it for — to make a difference.” Everyone in attendance had nothing but nice things to say about having the event at CONSOL Energy Center for the first time. In previous years, the gala had been held at venues such as the Carnegie Music Hall and The Pennsylvanian. “I actually enjoy it more here at the arena, because out here on the ice, it’s a little bit special,” said Jim Crockard, who sat at a table served by Zbynek Michalek. “Usually you’re up there in the seats or up in a box watching the game. Down here, you kind of feel like you’re a little more connected to what’s going on with the team.” Penguins general manager Ray Shero agreed, saying “This is, I think, by far the best venue so far. This has been great. We’ve had a great time the past five years I’ve been here, but today, taking a look at this, everybody’s really impressed with what they did here.” All in all, it was a fantastic evening for everyone involved. “We like supporting these organizations,” Crockard said. “And this is about the most fun event in town, so you can’t say no to this!”

THE PENGUINS’ 2010-11 SEASON IN REVIEW What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. That’s been the Penguins’ motto for the 2010-11 season. A season that started with eternal optimism took a hard left turn with seemingly endless injuries, yet the Penguins never faltered in the standings and continued to find ways to win. Though the season featured two halves — one part where the Penguins were flying high and breaking records, another part where the team had to battle through adversity to stay near the top of the standings — it certainly never lacked in highlights.
INAUGURATING A NEW RINK The 2010-11 campaign began with plenty of promise. But opening night wasn’t about any of that — it was about the future of hockey in Pittsburgh. On Oct. 7, Mario Lemieux stood at center ice and christened the shiny new CONSOL Energy Center with water from the ice at the historic Civic Arena, where the Penguins played for their first 43 years of existence. It took three games before the home team finally earned a victory in the new building, but by season’s end, the Penguins would be one of the best home teams in the NHL. “It’s fantastic,” Mike Rupp said of the new rink. “We started off slow there, but the fans have been great and we’re used to the building now. I have nothing but great things to say about the arena. It’s a first-class building, and it really treats us well.” As of March 30, the Penguins had the most home victories in the Eastern Conference with a 24-13-2 record at CONSOL Energy Center.

GOING STREAKING It took a few weeks for the Penguins to hit their stride, as the team needed a little time to develop chemistry with new acquisitions Martin, Michalek and Arron Asham. But once the Penguins took off, there was no stopping the flightless fowl. Pittsburgh went on a 12-game winning streak (and a 15-game unbeaten streak) in November and December, the second-best in franchise history. Fleury kick-started the amazing run with an impressive performance against the Tampa Bay Lightning, a 5-1 win on Nov. 12. Pittsburgh never lost a game in regulation again until a 3-2 loss in Philadelphia on Dec. 14.

Crosby led the way during the streak with a streak of his own. The Penguins captain went 25-straight games where he registered at least a point, the 11th best scoring streak in NHL history. He had nearly two full months (from Nov. 3 – Dec. 29) where he scored in every single game. In those 25 games, Crosby tallied 50 points (26G-24A). “What Sidney is doing right now is like an assault on the game,” Bill Guerin said, who announced that he would retire as a Pittsburgh Penguin on Dec. 6, in the midst of Crosby’s dominance. The 2010 part of the 2010-11 season was truly remarkable for the Penguins, but adversity struck once the calendar flipped.

THE CLASSIC GOES PRIMETIME When the league announced that the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic would be held at Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field between the Penguins and the Washington Capitals, many envisioned the snow-globe environment that Pittsburgh and Buffalo played in during the inaugural Winter Classic on New Year’s Day 2008. But in Pittsburgh, the weather is anything but predictable. After a perfectly sunny day for the alumni game and the open practice on Dec. 31, unseasonably warm temperatures and rain threatened to derail the New Year’s Day matinee between the Penguins and Capitals that was originally scheduled for 1 p.m. So the league pushed the game to 8 p.m. in hopes of avoiding the rainfall. The primetime game made for an even bigger spectacle, as 68,111 fans filled the football stadium for a 3-1 Capitals victory and a general celebration of hockey. “The Winter Classic was a highlight for us this year,” Rupp said. “We had some excitement with HBO, too, so it’s been a good year.” But Crosby suffered a concussion in early January, and the Penguins would have to learn how to win with their best player on the sidelines for an indeterminable amount of time.

INJURIES RAVAGE, FLEURY SAVES It seemed that Crosby’s concussion opened the floodgates for injuries. Evgeni Malkin tore both his ACL and MCL in an awkward collision versus Buffalo on Feb. 4, requiring surgery and sidelining him for the entire season. In addition to that bad news, Asham, Comrie, Mark Letestu, Martin, Brooks Orpik, Dustin Jeffrey, Eric Tangradi and Nick Johnson all missed significant time with injuries. Yet the Penguins still managed to stay in contention for the top seed in the Eastern Conference, and as of the end of March, Pittsburgh was in a strong position to earn home-ice advantage in the playoffs. continued on page 171

“Considering everything we went through, I think we had a pretty good season,” Michalek said. “Nobody probably expected us to be so high in the standings when all of these guys got hurt. So it’s a lot of credit to everybody in the room and the coaching staff.” All of the team’s injuries were certainly unfortunate, but the other 29 teams in the league all had injuries of their own to deal with. So the remaining players, as well as the American Hockey League call-ups, needed to buckle down and battle through the season. “It’s resiliency,” Michalek said. “We believed in everybody in this room, and we knew that every team goes through injuries. We had really bad luck because had so many of them, but it’s part of the game, and I think we handled it pretty well.” Two main reasons for the Penguins secondhalf success were Fleury’s brilliance in net and the team’s nearly unstoppable penalty kill. “Our goalie has been great for us the whole season,” Michalek said. We just have to make sure we clear the rebounds.” The Pittsburgh penalty kill unit was ranked No. 2 in the NHL as of March 30, and Fleury has powered his way into the talks for both the Vezina and Hart Trophies, the league awards for best goaltender and MVP, respectively. After going just 1-6 to start the season, Fleury has earned a 34-18-5 overall record, a .920 save percentage and a 2.28 goals-against average. His 34 wins were tied for third in the NHL. “In difficult times, he’s been the backbone of our team and the most consistent performer,” head coach Dan Bylsma said. “And that has given our team confidence to win hockey games, no matter what our lineup is, no matter what the score is.” “If I had to vote for the Hart Trophy, the Hart in my heart would be Flower,” Fleury’s road roommate Maxime Talbot said.
FULL STEAM AHEAD While the 2010-11 season was an enjoyable rollercoaster ride, once the playoffs start, it will all be in the past. All the Penguins can hope for is to enter the postseason at the top of their game. “Going into the playoffs, I think we can be pretty confident in the way we’re playing,” Michalek said. “We are getting healthier as we go, and we like where we are.”

PENS PROFILE: BEN LOVEJOY
When Ben Lovejoy blasted a close-range laser beam into the top shelf against visiting Florida on March 27, Dan Bylsma thought the rookie defenseman had invoked the supernatural. “That might have been an out-of-body experience for Ben,” said the Penguins coach, smiling. The second-period snipe certainly seemed beyond Lovejoy’s skill set. His third goal of the year, it ultimately enabled the Penguins to post an NHL-record fourth straight shootout victory, 2-1. But Lovejoy swears he meant to do it. “I did pick that spot. I did,” insisted the Dartmouth College product. “I will admit if I’m just trying to hit the net. But I was aiming there. “I went down to pinch and keep it in, the puck went right to [Alex] Kovalev, he made a nice pass and it left me open. I just tried to get to the front of the net and actually was aiming to shoot over [goalie Tomas Vokoun’s] shoulder.” Fair enough. At any rate, Lovejoy’s play during the latter stages of the season has been good enough to merit some divine guidance. Lovejoy became a regular after Brooks Orpik broke a finger Feb. 23. Lovejoy took advantage of the opportunity to play the best hockey of his brief NHL career. The 6-foot-2, 215-pounder tallied two goals, five assists and a plus-7 mark (with only one minus game) in the 15 games after Orpik got hurt. Most significant, Lovejoy kept dressing even after Orpik returned. After 42 games total, Lovejoy had three goals, 11 assists and was plus-9. When asked if he thought he played his best hockey in February and March, Lovejoy said, “I do. It comes back to confidence. During the first two-thirds of the season, maybe I was playing to not make mistakes, to not screw up. Now I’m out there trying to make plays, trying to be effective. To be a positive guy when I’m on the ice, not just get on and off quickly.” Lovejoy, 27, often utilizes his speed to get involved in the offense. “Again, it’s confidence,” said Lovejoy. “I’ve always been a skater. I’m not going to make plays like Kris Letang. But [the coaches] want the defense to be aggressive and get up the ice. It’s worked out for me.” Lovejoy’s first full NHL campaign has been the usual rollercoaster. “It’s been up and down,” the New Hampshire native confirmed. “Obviously, anytime you’re out of the lineup, you’re going to be disappointed. But I knew an injury would eventually come, and my time would come. “We get skated hard when we don’t play. You do that for a reason. You do that so you’re in shape and ready to go if and when you do get a chance.”

Lovejoy has battled all season with close friend Deryk Engelland for the No. 6 spot on the Pengiuns’ defense. He hopes his play down the stretch warrants inclusion in the playoff lineup. But Lovejoy takes nothing for granted. “We have seven good D,” Lovejoy said. “Deryk’s been great all year. Hopefully, I can continue to play well and stay in the lineup.” LOVEJOY PACKS SOME SNAPPY BANTER. On his place in the Penguins’ shootout pecking order: “I’m 16th or 17th. Before [goalies] Brent Johnson, Brad Thiessen and Marc-Andre Fleury. I think.”
On switching to center due to the Penguins’ injuries at that position: “If we have to resort to that, something’s wrong.” Humor, of course, involves give and take. So Lovejoy wasn’t offended by Bylsma’s comments about his goal against Florida. Bylsma didn’t even wait until after the game to stick in the needle. “He made fun of me between periods,” Lovejoy said. “But believe it or not, I was aiming there. Luckily, it went in.” J
