After a slow start to the season, the Calgary Flames are rolling and have battled their way into fifth place in the Western Conference as of March 2. Their current position is due in large part to the play of goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff over the second half of the season. The 34-year-old netminder had started 17-straight Miikka Kiprusoff contests for Calgary from Jan. 22 to March 1, earning a 12-2-3 record, a 1.79 goals-against average and .936 save percentage over that span. Kiprusoff had three shutouts in his last five games as of March 1, starting with the first-ever whitewashing in an outdoor game when he stopped all 39 shots he faced to power the Flames to a 4-0 win over Montreal in the 2011 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic. Kiprusoff — who has 29 wins on the season — then posted back-to-back shutouts of the St. Louis Blues in a home-and-home series on Feb. 27 and March 1, making 52 saves in those two contests.
FEBRUARY’S FINEST Chicago’s Jonathan Toews, San Jose’s Antti Niemi and New Jersey’s Johan Hedberg were named the NHL’s Three Stars for the month of February. Toews, a center for the Blackhawks, earned First Star honors after he led all scorers in February with 21 points (6G-15A) while posting a plus-13 rating. His play helped Chicago collect points in 10 of 13 games and climb from 10th to fifth place in the Western Conference. Niemi, a goaltender for the Sharks, was named the Second Star after posting a 10-2-0 record with a 1.89 goals-against average, a .934 save percentage and three shutouts in 13 appearances throughout the month of February. Hedburg, a goaltender for the Devils, earned Third Star honors when he backstopped his way to a 7-1-1 record in 10 games, posting a 1.43 goals-against average, a .943 save percentage and two shutouts en route to helping New Jersey gain 23 of a possible 26 points for the month.
TRADE DEADLINE DRAMA Sixteen trades were made before 3 p.m. on Feb 28, the National Hockey League’s designated trade deadline day for the 2010-11 campaign. One of the notable trades of the day involved forward Dustin Penner to Los Angeles from Edmonton in exchange for 2008 first-round pick Colten Teubert, a first-round pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft and a conditional second-round pick in 2012. Other notable trades included the Washington Capitals acquiring center Jason Arnott in exchange for forward David Steckel and a 2012 second-round draft pick. The Capitals also acquired defenseman Dennis Wideman from Florida in exchange for prospect Jake Hauswirth and Washington’s 2011 third-round draft pick.

RON BURKLE Ron Burkle has now added a new arena — Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center — to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world. Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 12th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have developed one of the outstanding ownership groups in all of professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his role in negotiations for the new arena deal. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for three-plus seasons and established new standards for television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits while winning acclaim as the No. 1 team in professional sports in Fan Relations. A consistent post-season threat on the ice, the Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in 2009. Young stars such as Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal and others have been signed to long-term contracts, ensuring that the team’s core will remain intact. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.

MARIO LEMIEUX Mario Lemieux always will be remembered for the magic he created on the ice, but one of the crowning achievements of his remarkable career came this season in his role as a businessman — the opening of CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins and Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue. The new arena puts the exclamation point on Lemieux’s lengthy quest to ensure the Penguins’ long-term future in Pittsburgh and provides his adopted hometown with a spectacular state-of-the-art center for professional and collegiate sports, concerts, family shows and other events. “There were so many people who contributed to this project, including local and state political leaders, local business leaders, NHL officials and, of course, our fans,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse, “but I think it’s safe to say that none of this happens without Mario Lemieux.” Even before the reality of CONSOL Energy Center, Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle had turned the Penguins into a premier NHL franchise, winning praise for off-ice business accomplishments in addition to creating a positive, player-friendly atmosphere on the hockey side. The Penguins have sold out a team-record 186 straight games, sold out every suite for three straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits. Over the summer, the Penguins were named the No. 1 team in professional sports in Fan Relations by ESPN The Magazine. Oh, and they won the Stanley Cup in 2009 — the third Cup of Lemieux’s career but his first as an owner. Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVPs trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, in addition to the two Cups. An immaculately gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. DAVID MOREHOUSE Pittsburgh native David Morehouse was named CEO of the Penguins in September and leads the team into an exciting new era at CONSOL Energy Center. Morehouse had served as team president since 2007, overseeing ticket sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development, as well as representing the team in corporate relations and governmental affairs. Under his leadership the Penguins have become one of the top organizations in professional sports — ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations and No. 5 overall as a franchise among 122 pro teams in North America by ESPN The Magazine. As team president, Morehouse implemented a brand strategy that featured a new commitment to marketing, fan interaction and community outreach, as well as a targeted focus on the team’s young fan demographic. Under his leadership, the Penguins have sold out every game for three straight seasons — the sellout streak was at 166 games entering 2010-11— while leading all U.S.-based NHL teams in local TV ratings last season and setting new standards for website traffic and social media. Morehouse joined the Penguins in December, 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project, following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill, as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He was Senior Advisor for the John Kerry for President campaign in 2004, traveling on the campaign plane and serving as Senator Kerry’s traveling chief of staff. He worked in the Clinton-Gore White House in the 1990s, and was Senior Counselor and Trip Director for Vice President Al Gore from 1999-2001. Morehouse grew up in the Beechview section on Pittsburgh. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University, and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have three children and live in Bell Acres.

RAY SHERO Ray Shero, 48, is at the vanguard of the NHL’s new breed of general managers — steeped in family hockey tradition but on the cutting-edge of new technology and modernization in hockey operations, player relations and team management. His fresh ideas and calm but firm management style helped transform the Penguins from a team that did not qualify for the playoffs in 2005-06 to one that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08 and won the Cup in 2008-09. During that time, he has moved boldly to ensure a strong future for the Penguins, signing six key members of the team’s core — Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal, Brooks Orpik and Kris Letang — to long-term contracts. Shero built on the team’s already strong foundation by adding key pieces in the 2010 offseason to set the Penguins up for long-term success. With shrewd maneuvering and an aggressive approach during the first day of free agency, he solidified the team’s blue line with the long-term signings of top-rated defensemen Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek. Shero was named GM on May 25, 2006 and one of his first acts was to declare a goal of building a team that could compete for championships on a yearly basis. He revamped the team’s hockey operations staff and structure, upgraded professional and amateur scouting, added a team operations director and opened new lines of communication with the business side of the organization. In his first season, 2006-07, Shero led his team to its first playoff berth since 2001 and a 47-point improvement in the standings — the fourth-largest improvement from one season to the next in NHL history. Building on that success, the Penguins topped 100 points for the second straight season in 2007-08, winning their first division title since 1998 and advancing to the Stanley Cup Final, where they fell to Detroit. After a rocky start in 2008-09, the Penguins rallied when Bylsma was named head coach in February, finishing 18-3-4 to earn a playoff berth and then defeating Philadelphia, Washington, Carolina and Detroit en route to the Stanley Cup. Along the way, they twice overcame 2-0 deficits in games (against Washington and Detroit), won all four seriesclinching games on the road and won two Game Sevens on the road — including the 2-1 thriller at Detroit for the Cup. Ray’s father, Fred, had won two Stanley Cups as head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers in 1974 and 1975. The Sheros are one of the few father-son tandems to appear on the Cup. The late Fred Shero also was a coach and general manager with the New York Rangers. Ray built his hockey sense and managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University, twice serving as team captain, and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. The native of St. Paul, Minn. is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

JASON BOTTERILL Jason Botterill enters his second full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position on May 22, 2009 by general manager Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockeyrelated matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top-minor league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 34, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins; his responsibilities included salary cap management, professional and amateur scouting and overseeing prospects development. Botterill’s avant-garde approach and understanding of the salary cap has been a major asset for the Penguins. Before joining Pittsburgh, Botterill worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in 1994 and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. He also played 393 career games in the AHL and IHL, recording 127 goals and 257 points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan, where he earned his MBA, and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996, helping his team win gold medals in all three tournaments. He resides in Pittsburgh along with his wife, Andrea.

In just one-plus seasons behind the bench, Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. After being promoted to Penguins head coach in February 2009, Bylsma, 40, directed the team to its third Stanley Cup in franchise history — a feat previously accomplished by legendary coaches “Badger” Bob Johnson and Scott Bowman. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season. Bylsma has the best regular-season winning percentage (.659) in team history, and is tied with Bowman for most postseason victories (23) and series victories (5). He also became the eighth-fastest head coach in NHL history to hit the 50-win mark (78 games). All-time under Bylsma, the Penguins boast a 65-31-11 regular-season record; 35-13-5 home record; 31-17-6 road mark; 40-3-3 when leading after two periods; 42-1-1 when scoring four or more goals; and 43-9-6 when scoring first. In 2009-10 the Grand Haven, Mich. native completed his first full NHL season behind the bench for Pittsburgh, leading the club to a 47-28-7 record for 101 points — breaking 100 points for the sixth time in franchise history and for the third time in the last four years — finishing only two points behind New Jersey for the Atlantic Division title. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular-season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim. He began his coaching career as an assistant with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks of the AHL in 2004-05 and made his NHL coaching debut as an assistant with the New York Islanders in 2005-06. Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh. He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son and reside in the North Hills.

TONY GRANATO Tony Granato, 46, begins his second season on the Penguins’ coaching staff. Granato, among his many responsibilities, works with the Penguins’ forwards and penalty killing units. He oversaw the NHL’s ninth-ranked penalty killing group with an 84.1-percent success rate, and second best on the road at 85.3 percent. Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato spent six seasons behind the bench for the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach from 2002-04 and 2008-09. Granato compiled a 215-104-17-16 record and led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003. Granato played 13 seasons in the NHL with the NY Rangers, Los Angeles and San Jose. In 1997, he was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for overcoming a near career-ending brain injury. In 773 career games, the feisty forward posted 248 goals, 492 points and 1,425 penalty minutes. He appeared in 79 career postseason games and helped lead Los Angeles to a Stanley Cup Final berth in 1993. Granato played four years at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgers’ Hall of Fame in 2000. Granato also played for the U.S. National team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary. Tony and his wife, Linda, are the parents of four children and reside in the South Hills.
TODD REIRDEN Todd Reirden, 39, joined Pittsburgh’s coaching staff on July 31, 2010 after coaching with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the previous two seasons. Reirden, an NHL defenseman for parts of five seasons, works closely with the team’s defensemen. Reirden, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 2009-10, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs. Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with the Bowling Green Falcons (CCHA) — his alma mater. He was a teammate of Bylsma’s during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons at Bowling Green. Selected by New Jersey in the 12th round (242nd overall) of the 1990 NHL Entry Draft, Reirden played professionally for 13 seasons, retiring after the 2006-07 campaign with Graz EC of the Austrian Hockey League. He appeared in 183 NHL games with Edmonton, St. Louis, Atlanta and Phoenix, recording 46 points (11+35) and 181 penalty minutes. Todd and his wife, Shelby, have one son.

GILLES MELOCHE Former NHL goaltender Gilles Meloche is in his fifth season as the Penguins’ full-time goaltending coach and 25th with the organization. Meloche has been instrumental in developing Marc-Andre Fleury into a Stanley Cup-winning netminder. Meloche served as a Penguins scout from 1989-2006 and also doubled as a goaltending coach/consultant during much of that time. He was also part of the staff when the Penguins won Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. A native of Montreal, Quebec, Meloche spent 18 seasons as an NHL goaltender with Chicago, California, Cleveland, Minnesota and Pittsburgh. He played the final three seasons of his career in Pittsburgh following a 1985 trade. Meloche appeared in 788 NHL games during his career, posting a record of 270-351-131 with a 3.64 goals-against average. In 45 career playoff games, he posted a 21-19 record and a 3.48 goals-against average. Gilles and his wife, Sophie, reside in Pittsburgh. GAME NOTES THE SERIES The Penguins and Buffalo Sabres conclude their season series here tonight with Pittsburgh trying to finish off its second sweep of Buffalo in the last four seasons. The Penguins had never swept a season series from the Sabres before winning all four games between the teams in 2007-08. . . The Penguins won the first game of this series in Buffalo on Nov. 24, 1-0, behind 30 saves from Marc-Andre Fleury; Dustin Jeffrey had one goal and one assist in a 5-2 win in Buffalo on Dec. 11; and Jeffrey, Tyler Kennedy and Chris Kunitz scored goals 3:14 apart early in the second period to rally the Penguins from a 2-0 deficit to a 3-2 victory here on Feb. 4. It was during that game that Evgeni Malkin suffered his season-ending knee injury. . . Pittsburgh has won five straight games against Buffalo. The Penguins have never won six straight against the Sabres. . . The Penguins are 12-3-0 in their last 15 games against Buffalo, with each of the three losses coming by a single goal . . . Ten of those 15 games have been decided by a single goal, including nine of the last 10. . . Pittsburgh has won three straight home games against the Sabres and six of the last seven home games against them. The only Buffalo victory in that span came on Dec. 8, 2008 (4-3). . . In their last six home games against the Sabres, the Penguins are 8-for-29 (27.5 percent) on the power play. . . Pittsburgh has scored first in five of its last six games against Buffalo. . . Feb. 25, a game that marked Alexei Kovalev’s return to the team after being acquired from Ottawa for a conditional seventh-round draft pick in 2011. It was Kovalev’s first game in a Pittsburgh uniform since Feb. 8, 2003, and the eight years between his stints with the team represent the third-longest stretch between appearances in team history. Mark Recchi went 13 years and eight months between appearances while Marty McSorley went eight years and six months. . . The Penguins earned a 6-5 shootout win in Toronto on Feb. 26 as Kovalev scored one goal and added the shootout winner. Upon returning to the lineup that night in Toronto after missing 13 games with a knee injury, Mark Letestu scored one goal and set up another. . . Thanks to some strange scheduling, the Penguins took three days off after the victory and resumed their road schedule back in Toronto last Wednesday. Pittsburgh played in New Jersey on Friday night and in Boston on Saturday. . . The Penguins will have three days off after tonight’s game and then host Montreal on Saturday at 2 p.m. It is Pittsburgh’s last Saturday home game of the regular season. . . Chris Kunitz was Alex Kovalev returned to the Penguins line-up hoping to return to the lineup on Feb. 25 in Carolina. It was his first game in a Pittsburgh uniform since Feb. 8, 2003. last week. . . The win over Toronto, which Tyler Kennedy missed with a lower-body injury, represented the 11th time in 14 games in which the Penguins did not have available at least one player who skated in the previous game. . . Tonight’s game will mark the 199th consecutive home sellout for Pittsburgh. . . The Penguins were 7-7-2 in 16 games this season without both Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin before facing the Leafs last Wednesday.

The Sabres were 3-0-1 in their last four games after a 3-2 road victory over the Rangers last Tuesday, as Boyes had a goal in his first game with Buffalo. . . Buffalo went 2-3-1 during a six-game homestand that ended last month, and it now finds itself in the middle of a seven-game road trip. MIKE LANGE One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange enters his 35th season with the Penguins and will handle radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.
PHIL BOURQUE Two-time Stanley Cup champion Phil Bourque begins his seventh season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75+89) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88+111) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for FSN Pittsburgh’s coverage of Penguins hockey.
BOB GROVE After a 17-year career as the Penguins beat writer for the Washington Observer-Reporter, Bob Grove joined the team’s radio broadcasts in 1998 as a frequent studio host/co-host and is now in his sixth season as full-time host of the pre- and post-game broadcasts and intermissions on the Penguins Hockey Network. Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or Icetime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts “Heineken Hockey Hour” and “Bob Grove’s Hot Stove” on Penguins Radio at 105.9-HD 2.

COMMUNITY UPDATE PENS THANK FANS FOR SUPPORT OF ‘HOCKEY FOR HUGGIES’ TO ASSIST MOTHERS AND BABIES IN NEED Pittsburgh Penguins fans provided a huge assist to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank on February 23 when the team battled the San Jose Sharks at CONSOL Energy Center. Fans donated 8,250 diapers to the “Hockey For Huggies” campaign and team partners Giant Eagle and Kimberly Clark then matched that donation — meaning the Penguins will contribute 16,500 diapers to this unique, league-wide promotion. The Penguins teamed up with the NHL and Huggies as part of the “Hockey For Huggies” program to help mothers and babies in need. For the February 23 game, the Penguins asked fans to bring an unopened package of diapers to support the campaign. All monetary and diaper donations will benefit mothers and children who rely on the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank for support. “Once again, Penguins fans have shown their phenomenal commitment to an important charitable project,” said David Peart, the team’s Vice President of Business Partnerships. “We’d also like to thank our partners at Giant Eagle and Kimberly Clark for their generous matching contribution.” The Penguins Wives Association also showed their support of this program when Anne Adams, wife of Penguins forward Craig, filmed a public service announcement to encourage fans to contribute. The team’s wives and girlfriends also made a huge diaper donation at the game. Research shows that 1 in 3 American mothers struggle with diaper needs and often have to cut back on other basics to provide diapers for their babies. The generosity of our fans, Giant Eagle and Kimberly Clark will help the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank service mothers and children in our local area.

STAAL STANDS TALL Jordan Staal’s long blonde locks of hair have become much more recognizable on the ice over the last few weeks. But as his hair has grown, so has his stature and status on the team. Head coach Dan Bylsma acknowledged that the 6-foot-4, 220-pound Staal has been a man among boys at times, both on the ice and in the locker room.
Jordan Staal has been placed into the No.1 center role with injuries sidelining Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.
“It is that way because he has a huge body, he’s a big man, he can skate, he can protect the puck. His hair makes him look even bigger,” Bylsma joked. “He can do a lot of things out there. ... It’s not just on the ice, but also in our room with guys. He’s a leader because he has those abilities, but because of his presence as well.” With a host of injuries to key players — especially the long-term absences of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin — Staal has been thrust into the No. 1 center role for the first time in his career. He has responded favorably to the challenge, posting 16 points (6G-10A) in the 25 games he has played since returning from foot and hand injuries that sidelined him for both training camp and the first 39 games of the season. Staal has also logged over 23 minutes of playing time in six of his nine games from Feb. 10-26, including a career-high 29:04 minutes against San Jose on Feb. 23. He is also averaging 21:19 minutes per game, a number that ranked eighth among NHL forwards as of March 2. Penguins general manager Ray Shero recently laughed off suggestions from reporters that perhaps Staal was playing too much, as the 22-year-old center would play the entire game if he had a choice. continued on page 61

“I smile at that just because you mentioned Staal eating up minutes,” Shero said. “Jordan played 29 minutes against San Jose and he kept looking at the end and saying ‘Put me on more, I want to go out.’ Dan was like, ‘You just played 29 minutes.’ He is rested. He has missed lots of games.” Staal agreed, saying the more minutes he plays, the better. “I want to be out there whenever I can,” he said. “It’s something I want to keep getting better at. It is definitely something that I am going to try and take advantage of. I am going to try and stay as fresh as I can.” Not only is Staal racking up the minutes on the ice, but he has also gained recognition amongst his peers for his ability to thrive in such an expanded role so quickly after returning from his injury. Jordan Staal played 29 minutes His first appearance this season came on against San Jose on Feb 23 and still pushed to play more minutes. Jan. 1 in the Winter Classic against the Washington Capitals. With key centers such Crosby and Malkin being sidelined with injuries soon after, Staal was quickly forced to shake off any rust he had gathered from his near six-month absence. While some players could have buckled under the sudden pressure, Staal has thrived, using his position as one of the most well-respected players in the locker room to spur his team on to several hard-fought victories. “Leadership always plays a big role when we’ve got a tough time,” Staal said. “Whether it’s myself or a few other guys in the room, we need to lead in the room and out on the ice as well. I’m just trying to do that.” His teammates’ admiration was shown last season when he received the Players’ Player award, which is given to the player who best exemplifies leadership for the team both on and off the ice. Forward Mike Rupp could not agree more with how the award’s criteria suits Staal. “You have to remind yourself sometimes how young he really is,” Rupp said. “His demeanor, the way he goes about his business, he is mature beyond his age. He is just going to get better from here on out. He is a big, physical guy and he is able to take games over by himself and he showed us that.” Goaltender Brent Johnson is the oldest member on the Penguins roster, yet even he looks up to and learns from the young Staal. “It is amazing to see a guy take hold of the opportunity that he has,” Johnson said. “He is one of the younger guys, but he is a veteran. He has seen a lot of things and he has won a Stanley Cup. He has been through a couple of long playoff runs. He knows exactly what is going on.”

TAG-A-KID In the event a parent and child might be separated at a CONSOL Energy Center event, parents can register their child with the Tag-A-Kid program. VIDEO CAMERAS Use of video or audio recording equipment is strictly prohibited. CONSOL Energy Center reserves the right to confiscate any tape or film and remove the patron from the building.
WHEELCHAIRS A limited number of wheelchairs are available for transporting guests that are disabled to their seating location. Guests can be transported from the gates to their seats. If a wheelchair is needed for the duration of the event, guests must supply their own wheelchairs. Wheelchairs cannot be reserved in advance. MORGANTOWN BLADES A MINOR The one-on-one competition features Nick Hawkins/ Ryan Hiel from North Pittsburgh Wildcats A Major Black 2 against Tanner Kutek/ Josh Broadman from Morgantown Blades A Minor. On Saturday, October 16, sixteen youth hockey teams from the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) in the Pee Wee age group (age 11 - 12) participated in a shootout competition at CONSOL Energy Center. The event was videotaped to be shown in episodes at Penguins home games. The first round of competition featured heats between two teams striving to advance to the next round. Sixteen teams fielded five skaters shooting against the opposing team’s goalie. After each team competition, an individual shooter and goaltender squared off against the opposing team’s individual tandem for a one-on-one competition. Each winning team and pair of individuals advanced to the next round of eight teams/tandems. The format repeated as teams and individual pairs advanced through the quarterfinal heats to move on to the semi-finals. Robust competition marked the semi-final round for teams and individual tandems. The remaining two teams and individual tandems then had to “leave it all on the ice” in vying for the championship. Early in the second intermission of each Penguins home game the various heats in the competition will be featured. Enjoy each episode.

In its first few months, CONSOL Energy Center also hosted such acts as Lady Gaga and The Eagles; was home to the Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase with Robert Morris; and featured multiple NCAA Division I basketball games, including the “City Game” between Pitt and Duquesne and the Big East/SEC Challenge. In its first season of operation, CONSOL Energy Center also will be home to the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League — bringing indoor football back to the city for the first time in almost 20 years. A funding plan for the new arena project was completed in March, 2007, thanks to the combined efforts of Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, among others. The Sports & Exhibition Authority owns the building on behalf of the city and county, and the Penguins have the lease. The new arena is managed by SMG, with Jay Roberts serving as general manager.

LAVAL, QUEBEC What was it like growing up there? It is a small city, very sports-oriented. I played a lot of soccer and hockey growing up. It is a very young and lively kind of town. Where did you and your friends hang out? At the park if it was winter, playing outdoor hockey. Right in front of our house the two nets were permanent in the street and that’s pretty much what we did, just play street hockey. What was your favorite sports team? My dad played for the Quebec Nordiques, so I have to say the Nordiques. What was your favorite restaurant? There was a crepe place that used to be in my hometown. By now they have moved, but they used to be my favorite place to eat. What’s something people don’t know about your hometown? There was the big General Motors plant that people didn’t know about. But we also had a lot of soccer players and a lot of hockey players. I played soccer as a right midfielder and in the number 10 role, and we won the province championship so we actually had a really good team. What was your favorite part about growing up there? I had friends that were pretty much the same age, and right after school we threw our bags in the house and we got dressed and played street hockey. I was always the youngest one because I have an older brother, and his buddies would come over or we would play a couple of streets down. I have some good memories of playing street hockey there growing up.

WHAT’S HAPPENING DEVELOPMENTAL PROGRAMS LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY With the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and Dick’s Sporting Goods over the last three years the Penguins have provided over 2,200 sets of equipment free to local youth ages 4 to 7. This year, four girls-only programs will operate along side of our standard co-ed Little Penguins program. OPEN PRACTICE The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation presented the 2010 Pittsburgh Penguins Open Hockey Practice on Thursday, December 9, 2010 at the brand new CONSOL Energy Center. The event offered a rare opportunity for over 10,000 school students in grades one through eight from across Allegheny County to see the Pittsburgh Penguins at work. Students were entertained leading up to the start of practice with informational videos about behind-thescenes aspects of the team/facility, as well as educational elements related to the game (geography, math, etc.) each student received an activity book as a takeaway.
WELLNESS TRAINING K.A.M.P. AT UPMC SOUTHSIDE Presented by UPMC Sports Medicine and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. Young hockey players were divided into groups and performed a rotation of 10-minute drills, while UPMC Sports Medicine professionals provided assessments. While the athletes trained, their parents received lectures on nutrition, concussions and sports injuries in general. Over 150 athletes and parents attended the event.

CONCUSSION PROGRAM The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, in conjunction with UPMC Sports Medicine, are prepared to announce a comprehensive program for baseline testing and concussion education for all youth sports beginning at the earliest possible ages.
PENGUINS FOUNDATION CHARITY ASSIST RAFFLE The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Penguins Foundation are pleased to host the Penguins Foundation Charity ASSIST Raffle, raising money for a variety of local charities in the western Pennsylvania area. Look for ticket sellers in their red aprons at every home game. The minimum prize each game is $2,000!
NEW SPORTS INITIATIVES — COMING IN 2011 OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES In its efforts to fight the sedentary tendencies of America’s youth, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation is excited to offer outdoor programs to promote fun and organized physical activity. The program, to be revealed in January, is designed to take advantage of the growing popularity of hockey in the tri-state area by affording young players access to existing facilities and newly constructed outdoor multi-use athletic facilities. These programs provide safe areas to play games under the supervision of established organizations. SCHOOL PROGRAMS • FIRST STRIDE In the ultimate Field Trip, participating schools will be provided with a Penguins-themed hockey experience: Students will be transported to and from a local ice arena, outfitted in full hockey equipment and learn fundamental hockey skills. The program will conclude with each child scoring their first goal! • GYM CLASS FOR A DAY This program is designed for 4th and 5th grade physical education classes and will provide basic skills and game instruction. Gym Class for a Day will transform your school gymnasium or parking lot into a dek/ball hockey rink. The Penguins will provide equipment for an ongoing P.E. Hockey Program. Penguins staff will be on hand to assist P.E. teachers in demonstrating and administering basic hockey skills and games. Each student will be provided a hockey ball and Penguins t-shirt to take home and continue practicing their skills.

ZACHARY LADUKE Greater Latrobe High School
LaDuke, a senior forward, scored 10 goals in five games to go along with 10 assists, racking up a total of 20 points for the Wildcats in January. He is a four-year starter on the varsity team and leads the PIHL double-A division in scoring.

Thomas Jefferson High School
Miller, a junior defenseman, was very productive for his team with five goals and five assists in five games. An offensive forward on his travel hockey team, Miller spearheads a young defensive unit for the Jaguars — serving as its defensive leader and as a team alternate captain.
RYAN RADOVIC Taylor Allderdice High School
Radovic, a senior forward and captain of the Dragons, was impressive with six goals, providing exceptional leadership and two-way effort. He plays on both the power play and penalty kill and has accounted for 60 percent of his team’s scoring in February.
BRANDON SAVKA Pittsburgh Central Catholic
Savka, a senior goaltender, led his team to a 4-2 record in January. In one game, he stopped 46 shots in a 1-0 victory for Central Catholic, gaining the shutout for the Vikings. He posted a .911 save percentage and a 2.33 goals-against average.

THE PENGUINS GAME VAULT MAY 10, 2001 • PENGUINS 3, SABRES 2 OT HSBC ARENA With a pair of star-studded lineups, the list of potential heroes was endless when the Penguins and Buffalo Sabres met for Game Seven of the 2001 Eastern Conference semifinals at HSBC Arena on May 10, 2001. Pittsburgh’s roster featured the likes of Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux, five-time scoring champion Jaromir Jagr, 44-goal scorer Alexei Kovalev and a pair of exceptional snipers in Martin Straka and Robert Lang. Darius Kasparaitis Buffalo fielded a nice collection of offensive firepower themselves with Dave Andreychuk, Miroslav Satan, Doug Gilmour, Maxim Afinogenov and Stu Barnes all suiting up for Game Seven. Yet, with all these superstars littering the ice, it was a hard-hitting, defensive-minded blueliner noted more for his ferocious open-ice hits than his soft hands who would put on Superman’s cape and send the Penguins soaring into the Eastern Conference finals with a tally that cemented his place in Pittsburgh postseason sports lore forever. Darius Kasparaitis, owner of one previous postseason goal, filled in as the trailer on a 3-on-2 rush into the Sabres zone, took a drop pass from Lang and buried a wrist shot far side past Buffalo netminder Dominik Hasek 13:01 into overtime to cap a 3-2 Penguins’ victory in one of the most dramatic series endings in franchise history. Buffalo opened the scoring in an intense, tight-checking affair 1:50 into the second period when J.P. Dumont tallied his fourth goal of the postseason to stake the Sabres to a 1-0 lead. Pittsburgh answered later in the period when rookie defenseman Andrew Ference — another one of the team’s unsung heroes that postseason — scored a power-play goal at the 8:19 mark to even the score at 1-1. With the game deadlocked heading into the third period, the stage was set for a dramatic finish. Steve Heinze gave Buffalo its second — and final — lead of the night just 32 seconds into the third period. As Hasek continued to deny the limited scoring chances the Penguins were generating, it appeared as though Pittsburgh’s Stanley Cup dreams were going to come up just short as the clock quickly ticked away. But Lang, who helped set up Straka’s overtime winner in Game Six to put the Penguins in this position, found a way to beat Hasek midway through the third period to even the score at 2-2. Both teams put down the clamps from there until the fateful moment in overtime when Kasparaitis gave his best Bobby Orr impersonation. When Kasparaitis let a wrist shot fly off his stick from the far circle, it looked harmless — especially considering Hasek was almost unanimously regarded as the best goaltender in the world at the time. However, Hasek could not snarl the shot in his catching glove, allowing Kasaparaitis to become the toast of Pittsburgh. “Of all the candidates you can talk about,” Penguins Hall of Fame broadcast Mike Lange said seconds after Kasparaitis’ shot tickled the back of the twine, “probably one of the most least-likely would be defenseman Darius Kasparaitis, and he gets the game-winner.”

For Alex Kovalev, hockey is a numbers game. A big numbers game. This past November 22, Kovalev became the 76th player (and third Russian) to record 1,000 career NHL points. Big accomplishment. Big numbers. But the number on his back? No big deal. Craig Alexei Kovalev notched the game-winning shootout goal Adams will keep No. 27. as the Penguins won 6-5 at Toronto on February 26. Kovalev will wear No. 72. Kovalev, 38, is in his second stint with the Penguins. He was acquired from Ottawa on Feb. 24 for a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2011 draft. He previously played for the Penguins from 1998-2003. Kovalev has worn No. 27 his entire career. Until now. “The guys were laughing about it,” Kovalev said. “They asked [Adams] if he was going to give up his number, and when he came on the ice for the morning skate at Carolina [Feb. 25], he said, ‘I like the number, but if you want it, you can have it.’ I said, ‘You can keep it.’ I can be successful with 72, too.” Kovalev proved that his second game back. He notched a goal in regulation, then the winner in the shootout as the Penguins won 6-5 at Toronto on February 26. Kovalev’s entire arsenal was on display at the Air Canada Centre. The limitless skill. He dangled. He made some impossible passes. He made a few bad turnovers. When he wired home a wrister in the shootout, the puck ricocheted off a post, then struck metal on the inside of the net. It sounded like a gunfight in a bell factory. Leave it to Kovalev to provide his own soundtrack. Kovalev initially skated on a line with center Jordan Staal and left winger James Neal, another new Penguin. Staal and Neal absorbed a crash course in Kovalev. “They got kind of surprised with a couple of passes I gave them,” said Kovalev. “They even said it themselves. They’re not used to passes like that. We were laughing about it. I said, ‘You should get used to that pretty quick. [Toronto] was my second game, and we only have 18 games to go. The quicker you get used to it, the better.’ But I love those guys. They’re both hard-working guys.” Kovalev had some great seasons during his first run in Pittsburgh. Statistically, his best campaign ever was 2000-01, Mario Lemieux’s comeback year. Kovalev had 44 goals and 51 assists in 79 games. continued on page 150

The 6-foot-1, 215-pound right winger had 145 goals and 198 assists in 345 games as a Penguin, averaging just under a point per game. Kovalev’s joy upon his return was palpable. “It feels great,” he enthused. “I never thought I’d be back to Pittsburgh again. It feels like I never left. The only change has been, I got confused and almost went to Mellon Arena instead of [CONSOL Energy Center]. “The new building is nice. It took me a while to find the locker room. I had to read all the signs to get there. It’s amazing. I don’t even need a hotel room or a house. I’ll just move in there. Live there.” The Penguins have been battling an endless string of injuries. Evgeni Malkin is out for the season. Sidney Crosby’s return is uncertain. None of which disturbs Kovalev. “The guys are really fighting, doing whatever it takes to win a hockey game,” said Kovalev. “It’s not easy with Sid and Malkin out of the lineup. But they’re doing a great job. All I’m trying to do is fill holes. Try to make the team better. “I’m not kidding around. It’s going to be hard. It’s not going to be easy. It might be the hard way. But I see us going all the way.” Kovalev knows what path to travel in that regard. He won the Stanley Cup as a 20-year-old with the New York Rangers in 1994. “As a young kid, you’re really hungry,” Kovalev remembered. “You want to show you’re better than anyone in the league. “Sometimes, when you get the opportunity to play in the playoffs, important games, and you’re under pressure, you become like a kid. It brings the memory back. You want to show it again: I’m better than you are. We’re a better team than the other team. You’re happy for those kinds of situations.” Kovalev is a so-called rental player. His contract is up at season’s end. He intends to keep playing, and wouldn’t mind extending his welcome in Pittsburgh. “I’d love to,” Kovalev said. “I love the fans. Those years I played here were great times. I’m really enjoying it. Great guys in the locker room. “Everybody has been questioning me. What can I do? Can I be the same player I used to be when I was in Pittsburgh? Physically, I feel strong. Physically, mentally and everything else, I feel I can be the same player I used to be in Pittsburgh.”

TRADING PLACES In the NHL trades are annually made to change locker-room chemistry, to fortify rosters for the stretch run, to dump salary, to add draft picks, what have you. In every one there’s a human element involved, not that it’s ever considered above the potential impact on the standings or the organization. “One of the toughest parts of our job, having to say good bye to a bunch of guys you’ve grown so accustomed to and then heading to a new squad,” Penguins goalie Brent Johnson said. “Your whole life just gets turned upside down,” added forward Craig Adams. “There are obviously the emotions involved [suddenly going from one team to another] but then the logistics, as well. Usually you get traded, you get a call saying you have to be at the airport in two hours or something like that. “You pack a bag and you go and you leave everything behind. It makes it really tough, especially if you have a family you’re leaving behind.” Johnson, traded from St. Louis to Phoenix in March of 2004, and Adams, traded from Carolina to Chicago in January of 2008 and claimed on waivers from Chicago by the Penguins in March of 2009, know firsthand the nuances of the in-season transaction. So does Alexei Kovalev, who was acquired in such a fashion by the Penguins for the second time when they sent a conditional seventh-round draft choice to Ottawa on Feb. 24. Kovalev is now a veteran of four in-season trades in his 18 NHL seasons. Defenseman Matt Niskanen and winger James Neal, swapped from Dallas for Alex Goligoski, are just now learning the drill. Procedural matters such as what line James plays on and which defenseman Niskanen is paired with figure to work themselves out more quickly than how long it takes both to actually feel comfortable as Penguins. “I don’t think you need to prove yourself right away,” Johnson said. “You need to just be a good team guy, do your job out on the ice. If you’re a scorer or a defensive defenseman, just play your game. “It happens all the time and guys make new friends, new brothers. It happens in our game.” Still, it takes some getting used to, some adjusting and some perspective. “Obviously, you want to impress your new teammates and coaches,” Adams said. “It definitely takes a few days to settle down, especially Craig Adams and Brent Johnson know first if you’re playing a new system and hand the nuances of the in-season transaction. you find yourself thinking about the continued on page 173

system instead of moving your feet. “I would guess most dressing rooms in this league are pretty welcoming. Most places you go you walk in and it’s a bunch of new faces. It takes you a while before you fit in. But you don’t have much time to worry about that. But I also think there are different guys at different times that can help get over the process a little quicker, making them feel welcome and making them feel like they’re part of the group right away.” The welcoming committee for Niskanen and Neal turned out to be a coaching staff that was willing to stay late and take both onto the ice for a 15-20 minute tutorial the night before their first game with the Penguins on Feb. 23 against San Jose (both had been delayed by weather-related travel issues that included being diverted from Dallas to Newark, N.J.). Both have repeatedly referenced the heavy emphasis on video preparation during their early days with the Penguins. “From what I can tell they’re constantly teaching,” Niskanen said of his new coaches. As for the players, “The guys have been really good,” Niskanen emphasized. “They’ve made me feel welcome and they’re right there to answer questions if I have any. “This is a good room here, good leadership within the group and an easy group of guys to get along with. That makes everything click.” So does the occasional perk a player stumbles upon after being traded. Neal said he fell into one of those when the Penguins incorporated him with Kovalev, “a guy I grew up watching. “It’s crazy that I’m playing on a line with him,” Neal said. Both may also come to appreciate the move from the Western Conference to the Eastern Conference, as Cooke eventually did after he was dealt from Vancouver to Washington in February of 2008. “I came from the West and came to the East,” Cooke said. “You really couldn’t believe the [relative] lack of travel.” Mike Prisuta is the sports director for WDVE-FM and the sports anchor for “Jim, Randy & the DVE Morning Show.”
