WIN A SUBARU OUTBACK FROM THE PENGUINS AND THE POWER OF BOWSER 6

SEE PAGE 64 FOR MORE DETAILS

AROUND THE NHL The Chicago Blackhawks had to face Western Conference rival Minnesota on Feb. 16 without head coach Joel Quenneville behind the bench, as the 52-year-old skipper had been hospitalized with an undisclosed medical condition after going to the emergency room late the night before. “He is currently in stable condition and is being treated for an undisclosed health concern today, not of cardiac nature,” Blackhawks head team physician Dr. Michael Terry Joel Quenneville said in a statement released the morning of Feb. 16. “It’s going to be tough to not have our leader behind the bench, but at the same time we can do some special things out there and hopefully get a win for him,” forward Patrick Kane told NHL.com. And win they did, as Blackhawks assistant coach Mike Haviland — who was named acting coach for the game — led Chicago to a 3-1 victory over Minnesota at the United Center.

RAY OF SUNSHINE It’s been a process for veteran forward Ray Whitney to get acclimated in Phoenix, but it’s finally reached fruition. Whitney, who was signed by the Coyotes as a free agent to a two-year deal last summer, began the season with no goals and five assists through his first 13 games. The 38-yearRay Whitney old Whitney — who’s posted at least 55 points in each of the five seasons since the lockout — initially struggled to deal with his new surroundings. But now Whitney has made his way to second place on Phoenix’s scoring chart with 11 goals and 44 points through 56 games. As of Feb. 17, Whitney was enjoying a four-game scoring streak that had seen him record seven points (1G-6A) over that stretch, bolstering the Coyotes to a winning streak of five games (also as of Feb. 17.)

GRABNER’S GOT THE TOUCH Michael Grabner has been absolutely scorching for the New York Islanders as of late, as the rookie forward has been picking up the offensive slack for an injury-ravaged Islanders lineup. Grabner has scored a goal in each of his past six games — Michael Grabner including a hat trick in a 7-6 win over Buffalo on Feb. 13 and a pair of two-goal efforts against the Penguins on Feb. 11 and Montreal on Feb. 10 — to give him 25 on the season. He leads all first-year players in that category and is third in overall rookie scoring with 35 points. He now has 14 points (10G-4A) in the 10 games since the 2011 NHL All-Star weekend that took place Jan. 28-30 in Raleigh, N.C, where the 23-year-old Grabner won the “Fastest Skater” competition.

RON BURKLE Ron Burkle has now added a new arena — Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center — to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world. Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 12th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have developed one of the outstanding ownership groups in all of professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his role in negotiations for the new arena deal. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for three-plus seasons and established new standards for television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits while winning acclaim as the No. 1 team in professional sports in Fan Relations. A consistent post-season threat on the ice, the Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in 2009. Young stars such as Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal and others have been signed to long-term contracts, ensuring that the team’s core will remain intact. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.

MARIO LEMIEUX Mario Lemieux always will be remembered for the magic he created on the ice, but one of the crowning achievements of his remarkable career came this season in his role as a businessman — the opening of CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins and Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue. The new arena puts the exclamation point on Lemieux’s lengthy quest to ensure the Penguins’ long-term future in Pittsburgh and provides his adopted hometown with a spectacular state-of-the-art center for professional and collegiate sports, concerts, family shows and other events. “There were so many people who contributed to this project, including local and state political leaders, local business leaders, NHL officials and, of course, our fans,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse, “but I think it’s safe to say that none of this happens without Mario Lemieux.” Even before the reality of CONSOL Energy Center, Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle had turned the Penguins into a premier NHL franchise, winning praise for off-ice business accomplishments in addition to creating a positive, player-friendly atmosphere on the hockey side. The Penguins have sold out a team-record 186 straight games, sold out every suite for three straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits. Over the summer, the Penguins were named the No. 1 team in professional sports in Fan Relations by ESPN The Magazine. Oh, and they won the Stanley Cup in 2009 — the third Cup of Lemieux’s career but his first as an owner. Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVPs trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, in addition to the two Cups. An immaculately gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario, his wife Nathalie and their four children live in Sewickley.

DAVID MOREHOUSE Pittsburgh native David Morehouse was named CEO of the Penguins in September and leads the team into an exciting new era at CONSOL Energy Center. Morehouse had served as team president since 2007, overseeing ticket sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development, as well as representing the team in corporate relations and governmental affairs. Under his leadership the Penguins have become one of the top organizations in professional sports — ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations and No. 5 overall as a franchise among 122 pro teams in North America by ESPN The Magazine. As team president, Morehouse implemented a brand strategy that featured a new commitment to marketing, fan interaction and community outreach, as well as a targeted focus on the team’s young fan demographic. Under his leadership, the Penguins have sold out every game for three straight seasons — the sellout streak was at 166 games entering 2010-11— while leading all U.S.-based NHL teams in local TV ratings last season and setting new standards for website traffic and social media. Morehouse joined the Penguins in December, 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project, following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill, as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He was Senior Advisor for the John Kerry for President campaign in 2004, traveling on the campaign plane and serving as Senator Kerry’s traveling chief of staff. He worked in the Clinton-Gore White House in the 1990s, and was Senior Counselor and Trip Director for Vice President Al Gore from 1999-2001. Morehouse grew up in the Beechview section on Pittsburgh. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University, and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have three children and live in Bell Acres.

RAY SHERO Ray Shero, 48, is at the vanguard of the NHL’s new breed of general managers — steeped in family hockey tradition but on the cutting-edge of new technology and modernization in hockey operations, player relations and team management. His fresh ideas and calm but firm management style helped transform the Penguins from a team that did not qualify for the playoffs in 2005-06 to one that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08 and won the Cup in 2008-09. During that time, he has moved boldly to ensure a strong future for the Penguins, signing six key members of the team’s core — Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal, Brooks Orpik and Kris Letang — to long-term contracts. Shero built on the team’s already strong foundation by adding key pieces in the 2010 offseason to set the Penguins up for long-term success. With shrewd maneuvering and an aggressive approach during the first day of free agency, he solidified the team’s blue line with the long-term signings of top-rated defensemen Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek. Shero was named GM on May 25, 2006 and one of his first acts was to declare a goal of building a team that could compete for championships on a yearly basis. He revamped the team’s hockey operations staff and structure, upgraded professional and amateur scouting, added a team operations director and opened new lines of communication with the business side of the organization. In his first season, 2006-07, Shero led his team to its first playoff berth since 2001 and a 47-point improvement in the standings — the fourth-largest improvement from one season to the next in NHL history. Building on that success, the Penguins topped 100 points for the second straight season in 2007-08, winning their first division title since 1998 and advancing to the Stanley Cup Final, where they fell to Detroit. After a rocky start in 2008-09, the Penguins rallied when Bylsma was named head coach in February, finishing 18-3-4 to earn a playoff berth and then defeating Philadelphia, Washington, Carolina and Detroit en route to the Stanley Cup. Along the way, they twice overcame 2-0 deficits in games (against Washington and Detroit), won all four seriesclinching games on the road and won two Game Sevens on the road — including the 2-1 thriller at Detroit for the Cup. Ray’s father, Fred, had won two Stanley Cups as head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers in 1974 and 1975. The Sheros are one of the few father-son tandems to appear on the Cup. The late Fred Shero also was a coach and general manager with the New York Rangers. Ray built his hockey sense and managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University, twice serving as team captain, and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. The native of St. Paul, Minn. is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

JASON BOTTERILL Jason Botterill enters his second full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position on May 22, 2009 by general manager Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockeyrelated matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top-minor league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 34, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins; his responsibilities included salary cap management, professional and amateur scouting and overseeing prospects development. Botterill’s avant-garde approach and understanding of the salary cap has been a major asset for the Penguins. Before joining Pittsburgh, Botterill worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in 1994 and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. He also played 393 career games in the AHL and IHL, recording 127 goals and 257 points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan, where he earned his MBA, and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996, helping his team win gold medals in all three tournaments. He resides in Pittsburgh along with his wife, Andrea.

In just one-plus seasons behind the bench, Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. After being promoted to Penguins head coach in February 2009, Bylsma, 40, directed the team to its third Stanley Cup in franchise history — a feat previously accomplished by legendary coaches “Badger” Bob Johnson and Scott Bowman. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season. Bylsma has the best regular-season winning percentage (.659) in team history, and is tied with Bowman for most postseason victories (23) and series victories (5). He also became the eighth-fastest head coach in NHL history to hit the 50-win mark (78 games). All-time under Bylsma, the Penguins boast a 65-31-11 regular-season record; 35-13-5 home record; 31-17-6 road mark; 40-3-3 when leading after two periods; 42-1-1 when scoring four or more goals; and 43-9-6 when scoring first. In 2009-10 the Grand Haven, Mich. native completed his first full NHL season behind the bench for Pittsburgh, leading the club to a 47-28-7 record for 101 points — breaking 100 points for the sixth time in franchise history and for the third time in the last four years — finishing only two points behind New Jersey for the Atlantic Division title. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular-season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim. He began his coaching career as an assistant with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks of the AHL in 2004-05 and made his NHL coaching debut as an assistant with the New York Islanders in 2005-06. Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh. He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son and reside in the North Hills.

MIKE LANGE One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange enters his 35th season with the Penguins and will handle radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

PHIL BOURQUE Two-time Stanley Cup champion Phil Bourque begins his seventh season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75+89) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88+111) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for FSN Pittsburgh’s coverage of Penguins hockey.

BOB GROVE After a 17-year career as the Penguins beat writer for the Washington Observer-Reporter, Bob Grove joined the team’s radio broadcasts in 1998 as a frequent studio host/co-host and is now in his sixth season as full-time host of the pre- and post-game broadcasts and intermissions on the Penguins Hockey Network. Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or Icetime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts “Heineken Hockey Hour” and “Bob Grove’s Hot Stove” on Penguins Radio at 105.9-HD 2.

COMMUNITY UPDATE PENGUINS FANS MAKE CELL PHONE COLLECTION A SUCCESS Penguins fans provided the assist on February 4 when the team and corporate partner Verizon Wireless hosted the fourth annual Cell Phone Collection for the benefit of Womansplace. As usual, Penguins fans showed why they are the best in the National Hockey League by donating 368 cell phones and accessories which will be utilized in the Verizon Wireless HopeLine® program. The HopeLine program will then refurbish or recycle the phones in an environmentally sound way and distribute the phones — complete with an allotment of complimentary cell phone minutes — to help provide assistance for women and their children affected by domestic violence. Fans were encouraged to donate cell phones, accessories or money upon entering the CONSOL Energy Center gates. Contributions were accepted by Booster Club members until 10 minutes into the first period and every fan who donated was eligible to win autographed Penguins memorabilia. Verizon Wireless also exhibited the spirit of giving by making a monetary donation to Womansplace. The total cash donation from Penguins fans and Verizon Wireless totaled $1,500 and all funds will be used to help end the cycle of domestic violence. Thanks to the generosity of Penguins fans and Verizon Wireless, families affected by domestic violence continue to have lines of support available.

PENS PROFILE MIKE RUPP

After eight seasons as a role player in the NHL, Mike Rupp may have finally found a way to become a first-liner. It’s called attrition. Injuries overwhelmed the Penguins as February progressed, with Evgeni Malkin sidelined for the season, Sidney Crosby out indefinitely and Chris Kunitz, Mark Letestu, Dustin Jeffrey, Eric Tangradi and Mike Comrie all on the shelf for extended periods. Matt Cooke got a four-game suspension. Somebody had to play more. Enter Rupp. Rupp’s minutes jumped into the teens in four of five games the Penguins played from Feb. 6-13. The lone exception was the brawl-filled Feb. 11 game at the New York Islanders which saw Rupp get more penalty minutes (15) than minutes played (5:05) before being ejected at the 5:21 mark of the second period. Rupp was even getting some power-play ice. Mike Rupp has seen an increase in his icetime due to the rash of injures on the Penguins roster.

Rupp had five goals, six assists and 104 penalty minutes after his first 58 games. The Cleveland

native didn’t mind carrying the extra burden produced by injury. “It gives me the opportunity to get my legs under me,” Rupp said. Sharing the burden with Rupp were Max Talbot and Chris Conner. The trio was one of continued on page 61

the few lines able to stay together on a relatively steady basis, spending a lot of time in the opposition end. “Our line’s been good for a while,” Rupp said after the Penguins’ 2-1 overtime victory over Los Angeles at CONSOL Energy Center on Feb. 10. “We’ve been taking the puck to the net and creating a little bit of chaos. I think that’s our job. Create chaos. Go to the net and get some ugly ones. “This win is huge. People are talking about us hanging on until guys get back. But we still have a good shot to win hockey games. We’ve got to win them different ways, but we’ve got to win them. We went out tonight and had a great group effort. I like the way we played.” The 6-foot-5, 230-pounder had great praise for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton call-ups that dotted the Penguins lineup. “Those guys are hungry,” Rupp said. “We’re not looking to fill the shoes of the guys that are out. But we’ve got guys who are hungry and willing to do whatever it takes, the little things. “Our structure isn’t different. But we need to be better at playing within ourselves, better than we have. When we do that, we can win.” continued on page 62

THE TRIO

OF RUPP, MAX TALBOT AND CHRIS CONNER IS ONE OF THE FEW LINES ABLE TO STAY TOGETHER ON A RELATIVELY STEADY BASIS.

continued from page 61

Rupp, Talbot and Conner work together to create chaos in front of the net.

Rupp, 31, scored a career-high 13 goals last season. With so much firepower out, he’d like to put up more points. “I wish I was more productive this year,” Rupp said. “This is an opportunity for me. I don’t look at it as pressure.” Like most of his teammates, Rupp has a chip on his shoulder regarding what can be accomplished with the team’s offensive superstars hurt. “After we lost at Washington [3-0 on Feb. 6], you got guys like [network analyst] Mike Milbury starting to question us as a team,” Rupp said. “Before that, they called us a great character team that can deal with the losses of the guys we have out. It’s a challenge. We have to view it that way.” Hockey isn’t a game where there’s time to cry over spilled milk. Spilled beer, however, is another story. Rupp bumped into the boards during warm-ups before the Penguins’ Dec. 28 home game vs. Atlanta, spilling a spectator’s beer that sat on the dasher. Rupp got a puck, taped $10 and a signed apology to it, and tossed it to the thirsty fan. The Penguins: Leading the way in customer service.

TONIGHT’S COMPETITORS ARE:

QUARTER-FINALS HEAT ONE: BEAVER BADGERS A MAJOR BLACK VS. ALLEGHENY BADGERS A MAJOR GOLD The one-on-one competition features Cory Steinle/ Owen Schaefer from Beaver Badgers A Major Black against Aaron Bartify/ Joel Basenback from Allegheny Badgers A Major Gold. You can also view this and previously shown competitions at pittsburghpenguins.com.

On Saturday, October 16, sixteen youth hockey teams from the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) in the Pee Wee age group (age 11 - 12) participated in a shootout competition at CONSOL Energy Center. The event was videotaped to be shown in episodes at Penguins home games. The first round of competition featured heats between two teams striving to advance to the next round. Sixteen teams fielded five skaters shooting against the opposing team’s goalie. After each team competition, an individual shooter and goaltender squared off against the opposing team’s individual tandem for a one-on-one competition. Each winning team and pair of individuals advanced to the next round of eight teams/tandems. The format repeated as teams and individual pairs advanced through the quarterfinal heats to move on to the semi-finals. Robust competition marked the semi-final round for teams and individual tandems. The remaining two teams and individual tandems then had to “leave it all on the ice” in vying for the championship. Early in the second intermission of each Penguins home game the various heats in the competition will be featured. Enjoy each episode.

I feel

.

Ask a grieving child how they’re feeling and you may get a lot of answers. Or none at all. For many, finding the words to express their feelings can be difficult. But while finding the right words may not be easy, finding the right place to turn to for help can be. At the Caring Place, we’re here when grieving children need someone to listen, to talk, or to just sit and be. For more information about one of our peer support groups or to volunteer, call us today.

OUR NEW HOME CONSOL Energy Center opened in August, 2010 as Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue — home of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins as well as other professional and collegiate sports, concerts, children’s shows, skating shows and more. It replaced the old Civic Arena/Mellon Arena, which had operated since 1961 and was home of the Penguins from their inception in 1967. It was the oldest arena in the National Hockey League. “CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins,” said David Morehouse, CEO of the hockey team. “With open concourses, comfortable seating, cutting-edge technology, a state-of-the-art scoreboard and sound system, and an extensive array of food and beverage options, it is

It is a green building and is the first NHL arena to attain LEED Gold certification. Even before its doors had opened, CONSOL Energy Center landed commitments from shows that would have bypassed the old arena — the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament first and

In its first few months, CONSOL Energy Center also hosted such acts as Lady Gaga and The Eagles; was home to the Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase with Robert Morris; and featured multiple NCAA Division I basketball games, including the “City Game” between Pitt and Duquesne and the Big East/SEC Challenge. In its first season of operation, CONSOL Energy Center also will be home to the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League — bringing indoor football back to the city for the first time in almost 20 years. A funding plan for the new arena project was completed in March, 2007, thanks to the combined efforts of Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, among others. The Sports & Exhibition Authority owns the building on behalf of the city and county, and the Penguins have the lease. The new arena is managed by SMG, with Jay Roberts serving as general manager.

The CONSOL Energy Center has already hosted acts such as Paul McCartney, The Eagles, and Lady Gaga. It was home to the Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase with Robert Morris and has featured multiple NCAA Division I basketball games.

ORFORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE What was it like growing up there? It’s a small town but I love it. I still live there in the summer and I actually just bought a house with my wife there. I went to college [at Dartmouth] there, and except for moving away for four years for high school, I have lived there my whole life. What did you do during the summer? We lived near a lake growing up so we spent a lot of time out on the water. I also spent a lot of my time playing hockey and working out and trying to get in shape. Who were your favorite sports teams? The Boston Bruins and the New England Patriots. What is an underrated part of your hometown? There are very few places with better weather in the summer. It’s cool at night and warm and sunny during the day. I really enjoy it. What was your favorite restaurant? Murphy’s-on-the-Green. It’s an Irish-type restaurant and it’s very good. What was your favorite part about growing up there? The relaxed, laidback atmosphere. I don’t enjoy living in populated cities. If you go visit someone [in Orford] and they live 20 minutes away, it is going to take you 20 minutes. There is no traffic at all.

OUR MISSION To actively promote physical well being, encourage teamwork, stress the value of education and provide essential life skills to young people in our community through youth hockey and other activities.

WHAT’S HAPPENING DEVELOPMENTAL PROGRAMS LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY With the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and Dick’s Sporting Goods over the last three years the Penguins have provided over 2,200 sets of equipment free to local youth ages 4 to 7. This year, four girls-only programs will operate along side of our standard co-ed Little Penguins program. OPEN PRACTICE The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation presented the 2010 Pittsburgh Penguins Open Hockey Practice on Thursday, December 9, 2010 at the brand new CONSOL Energy Center. The event offered a rare opportunity for over 10,000 school students in grades one through eight from across Allegheny County to see the Pittsburgh Penguins at work. Students were entertained leading up to the start of practice with informational videos about behind-thescenes aspects of the team/facility, as well as educational elements related to the game (geography, math, etc.) each student received an activity book as a takeaway.

WELLNESS TRAINING K.A.M.P. AT UPMC SOUTHSIDE Presented by UPMC Sports Medicine and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. Young hockey players were divided into groups and performed a rotation of 10-minute drills, while UPMC Sports Medicine professionals provided assessments. While the athletes trained, their parents received lectures on nutrition, concussions and sports injuries in general. Over 150 athletes and parents attended the event.

132

CONCUSSION PROGRAM The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, in conjunction with UPMC Sports Medicine, are prepared to announce a comprehensive program for baseline testing and concussion education for all youth sports beginning at the earliest possible ages.

PENGUINS FOUNDATION CHARITY ASSIST RAFFLE The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Penguins Foundation are pleased to host the Penguins Foundation Charity ASSIST Raffle, raising money for a variety of local charities in the western Pennsylvania area. Look for ticket sellers in their red aprons at every home game. The minimum prize each game is $2,000!

NEW SPORTS INITIATIVES — COMING IN 2011 OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES In its efforts to fight the sedentary tendencies of America’s youth, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation is excited to offer outdoor programs to promote fun and organized physical activity. The program, to be revealed in January, is designed to take advantage of the growing popularity of hockey in the tri-state area by affording young players access to existing facilities and newly constructed outdoor multi-use athletic facilities. These programs provide safe areas to play games under the supervision of established organizations. SCHOOL PROGRAMS • FIRST STRIDE In the ultimate Field Trip, participating schools will be provided with a Penguins-themed hockey experience: Students will be transported to and from a local ice arena, outfitted in full hockey equipment and learn fundamental hockey skills. The program will conclude with each child scoring their first goal! • GYM CLASS FOR A DAY This program is designed for 4th and 5th grade physical education classes and will provide basic skills and game instruction. Gym Class for a Day will transform your school gymnasium or parking lot into a dek/ball hockey rink. The Penguins will provide equipment for an ongoing P.E. Hockey Program. Penguins staff will be on hand to assist P.E. teachers in demonstrating and administering basic hockey skills and games. Each student will be provided a hockey ball and Penguins t-shirt to take home and continue practicing their skills.

WEST ALLEGHENY EARNS SENIOR NIGHT SHUTOUT OVER THOMAS JEFFERSON The West Allegheny Indians put on a dominating performance on their team’s senior night, earning a 7-0 win over the Thomas Jefferson Jaguars. All five Indians seniors played big roles in their Feb. 14 victory. The game began with West Allegheny controlling the play in the Jaguars zone, but the Indians couldn’t solve Thomas Jefferson goalie Anthony Piccioni. But the Indians were eventually able to get on the scoreboard when James Bing took a slapshot from the point that snuck under Piccioni and into the cage. The Indians increased their lead less than four minutes later, when senior Andy Movitch found a rebound and put the puck into an open net to give West Allegheny a 2-0 lead. The Indians took that two-goal lead into the second and increased it to three less than two minutes into the period, when Movitch netted his second of the night. Over the next few minutes Thomas Jefferson looked to get back into the game, but West Allegheny goalie Jason Kumpfmiller stopped everything the Jaguars threw his way. After weathering the Jaguars storm, the Indians were able to get another goal. Taran Beckett put the Indians up 4-0 when his shot from the point eluded both a Jaguar defender and Piccioni. About two minutes later, West Allegheny scored again when senior John Kaltnecker tallied a power-play goal to close out the second period scoring. Another West Allegheny senior, Chelsea Burdzy, scored about six minutes into the third period to give the Indians a 6-0 lead. Burdzy took a pass from Chris Hughes, skated down the boards and placed a shot far side that found its way past Piccioni. Movitch completed his hat trick with about seven minutes remaining in the final frame. He brought the puck into the slot and fired a shot that beat Piccioni over the glove, earning West Allegheny a 7-0 win on their senior night. The next game for both teams is a rematch with each other on Feb. 24 at the Blade Runners in Bethel Park.

THE PENGUINS GAME VAULT FEBRUARY 21, 1982 • PENGUINS 4, NY ISLANDERS 3 CIVIC ARENA Hockey history is littered with dynasties — the 1970s Montreal Canadiens, 1980s Edmonton Oilers and 1990s Pittsburgh Penguins. In 1982, the mighty New York Islanders were in the midst of joining this pantheon of great teams, as the Islanders were in the middle of a season which would watch them record the second of four-straight Stanley Cup championships. Michel Dion Led by the two-way play of center Bryan Trottier and defenseman Dennis Potvin, along with the sharp-shooting prowess of Mike Bossy, the Islanders dominated the National Hockey League in 1981-82. By the time New York arrived at the Civic Arena on Feb. 21, 1982, the defending champs had already reeled off a league-record 15 consecutive victories. They figured to be a pretty good bet to pick up win No. 16 as the Penguins entered the contest winners in just three of their previous 19 contests (3-12-4). But, as they say, that’s why they play the games. The Penguins wasted no time jumping on New York as Rick MacLeish tallied 4:55 into the opening period to put Pittsburgh ahead, 1-0. New York later evened the score at the 13:41 mark, taking advantage of a hooking penalty to Greg Malone when John Tonelli picked up his 28th goal of the season by beating Michel Dion to even the score at 1-1. Malone helped atone for his penalty 34 seconds into the second period by setting up a goal from defenseman Pat Price that put the home team back in front, 2-1. New York took complete control of the game following the Price goal, outshooting the Penguins 28-9 the rest of the way. The Islanders’ barrage of shots against Dion paid off late in the second period when Clark Gillies and Bob Bourne struck for goals less than two minutes apart that allowed the Islanders to enter the third period holding a 3-2 advantage. Dion, who represented the Penguins in the All-Star Game that season, held the fort during a third period that saw the Islanders outshoot the Penguins, 16-2. Fortunately for the Penguins, they made sure to make both of their shots against Rollie Melanson count. Of course, it also helped that the player who fired both shots for Pittsburgh was rookie sniper Mike Bullard, who established a franchise rookie record by scoring a team-high 37 goals (later broken by Mario Lemieux). Bullard evened the score at 3-3 just under five minutes into the final frame. He later shocked the Islanders by scoring late in the third period to cement a 4-3 Penguins’ victory that put an end to the Islanders’ winning streak. New York’s 15-game winning streak stood as an NHL record until the 1992-93 season, when the Penguins, led by Lemieux, ran off a 17-game streak that still stands today. 147

WE’LL BATTLE THROUGH The message has remained the same. And the Penguins have altered neither their style nor their expectations as they’ve forged on without Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and seemingly countless other significant pieces to the puzzle. Head coach Dan Bylsma even suggested last week there would be some long-term benefit gleaned from having to play without Crosby, Malkin, Chris Kunitz, Mark Letestu, Matt Cooke, Eric Godard, Dustin Jeffrey, etc., because of the attention to detail The coaching staff hasn’t waivered in its navigating such a stretch of schedule belief the Penguins have what it takes to win even with the superstars out of the lineup. would require. “To be honest with you it’s more like a playoff game, a close-checking, tight type of mentality like you see in the playoffs,” Bylsma said. “So for our team we’re in a playoff type of mode and [playing] playoff hockey in terms of managing the puck and how we want to play and the guys coming up understand that fully. “The players coming up know the system and understand what we’re asking. When you have a line of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Chris Kunitz and on that same team you have a line of Mike Rupp, Craig Adams and Arron Asham you’re asking them to play the same way. It’s going to look different. You’re going to think it’s much different. It’s the same type of mentality in where we want to execute. “We don’t ask different lines to execute differently or play a different system and when new players come in they understand exactly how we need to play.” The Penguins also understand that even when they’re seemingly pressed to the limit in terms of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton call-ups filling out spots at forward they have plenty to work with and win with throughout the roster. “This team can win,” assistant coach Tony Granato said “This personnel can win. We don’t have to wait for guys to get back in the lineup and say, ‘OK, we’re going to wait for those guys and then we’ll be ready for the playoffs.’ That’s not our attitude at all and that shouldn’t be anybody’s thinking. We have plenty of guys that can help us win games. “We have, I think, as good a defensive group as there is in the NHL; they’re healthy. We have as good a goalie as there is in the NHL; he’s healthy. So right there you have your continued on page 150

149

foundation in place. “That’s something we should hang our hats on, play solid defensively and we’ll find ways to score goals.” Granato maintains three a game should be sufficient as far as finding ways to score goals is concerned. “That’s enough to win in our league,” he said. “If we can generate that consistently we should find ways to win games.” Both Bylsma and Granato are in agreement that no one should be taking it upon himself to “step up” in the absences of Crosby, Malkin and others. “You don’t ask guys to do more,” Granato said. “You ask them to be their best at this time.” Added Bylsma: “The difficult part is Max Talbot, Pascal Dupuis, Jordan Staal, very good players, all add something to our team. They cannot replace Sidney Crosby. They have to be Max Talbot, Pascal Dupuis and Jordan Staal. “We need to make sure they’re focused on playing their role and their part in how we play and do that to the best of their ability. It’s really more making sure they bring their foundation.” Self-pity or a woe-is-us mentality creeping into the collective thought process hadn’t been an issue initially as the Penguins attempted to persevere despite a depleted lineup. Bylsma doesn’t anticipate such emotions ever polluting the Penguins’ thinking. “I think it’s actually more dealing with the questions that keep getting asked from outside the room,” he said. “We have been and continue to be focused on what we need to do in this room with this group of guys and how we need to play. “You keep getting reminded, however, that there are lots of injuries. From within our team we know and believe if we take care of things and play as a group we give ourselves a chance to have success and that’s where our focus is.” Added Granato: “This team has character. It has leadership. It has what it takes to win. “We’ll battle through it and like everybody says, if you can find a way to do it you’ll be better off because of it in the long run and that’s what we’re looking at doing.”

STERLING SILVER Back in September, Brett Sterling arrived at Penguins training camp and immediately made an impact. He impressed head coach Dan Bylsma so much that he skated on the top line with Sidney Crosby and Pascal Dupuis in the first-ever hockey game at CONSOL Energy Center against Detroit. At that time, Sterling was just happy to get an opportunity. “If you look at the top players in the league, the Penguins have about four or five of them,” Sterling said in September. “So, to get to play on a line with a guy like [Crosby] is great.” In that game, he took a pass from Crosby and sniped a shot past Red Wings goalie Chris Osgood to help the Penguins to a 5-1 victory. Fast forward to February, and Sterling received another opportunity to put pucks in the net. But this time, he managed to do it without players like Crosby and Evgeni Malkin in the lineup. A string of injuries led to the Penguins calling up four players at once from the team’s top minor-league affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton — Sterling, Ryan Craig, Nick

Johnson and Joe Vitale. It was such an unusual call-up that the town car normally used to pick the players up wasn’t sufficient. “We had to get a larger vehicle, which is a first for me,” Bylsma said. Less than 24 hours after being called up, Sterling struck gold when a pass from Johnson found him open in the slot. He ripped a shot past Los Angeles’ Jonathan Quick to give the Penguins the opening goal in a 2-1 overtime victory. “Dustin Jeffrey had a great look and threw it under his stick and got me into the slot,” Sterling said. “I had all the time in the world to beat him high glove. It was a good feeling.” In his first four games, he has netted two goals and two assists. “It’s nice to come up here and produce,” Sterling said. “Playing with good players and getting the puck in scoring situations is what my game is all about. Hopefully I get those chances and convert when I have one.” After his timely goal against the Kings, Bylsma moved him to play wing on Jordan Staal’s line the following game Sterling was recalled from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Feb. 10 and played against the LA Kings that night.

to perhaps spark even more offense from Sterling. “How can you complain about playing

with an NHL [caliber] All-Star,” Sterling said. “As talented as he is, he makes it easy on you. Playing with him and a guy from Wilkes-Barre, Nick Johnson, makes life a lot easier.” While Sterling is quick to pass credit to his teammates, no matter who he plays with, he seems to produce. In 46 games with WB/S prior to being recalled, he lit the lamp 18 times while assisting on 39 others. With the Chicago Wolves in the 2006-07 season, he buried the puck 55 times. And over the past three years, he’s been called upon for a total of 10 NHL games, scoring five points. And while the Penguins’ injury situation could be daunting for any call-up, Sterling embraces the challenge. “We have a lot of guys out, but we called up a bunch of players, so we have to step up and fill in for those injured guys,” he said. The fact that the Penguins are still just a few points behind the Eastern Conference’s first-place team, Philadelphia, is impressive in its own right, according to Sterling.

“I think it speaks to the depth of the Penguins organization, [to] look at the standings and where they are and what they have done so far with the amount of injuries they have had,” he said. It could be easy for a recent call-up to simply focus on his own game and try to impress coaches to possibly earn a spot on the roster in the future, but Sterling recognizes that it’s more about the big picture. “It’s been a good experience for me personally,” Sterling said. “We’ve been fighting it a little bit, but we have a good team here. Look at the players that we have, they’re unbelievable players. Hopefully we get a few guys back, get some wins rolling. No matter what happens with our lineup, we have to compete to win games.”
