Peter Forsberg announced his retirement from the game of ice hockey on Feb. 14 as a member of the Colorado Avalanche. The 37-year-old forward, who cited problems with his troublesome right foot, played two games for the Avalanche on Feb. 11 and Feb. 13 before making his Peter Forsberg decision to retire from the National Hockey League. They had been his first two contests since the 2008 Stanley Cup playoffs. “The time has finally come,” Forsberg said. “I’ve played hockey all my life, but I’ve come to the decision that I’ve played my final game. . . . One thing’s for sure, I won’t secondguess myself. I really tried and I tried and I tried. I’m really sure about the decision. I’m done, period. I can’t do it.” Forsberg, whose No. 21 sweater will be retired by the Avalanche sometime next season, won the Calder Trophy (top rookie) in 1994-95 with the Quebec Nordiques before they moved to Denver the following season. He spent a total of nine seasons with the Avalanche organization, winning two Stanley Cups with Colorado in 1996 and 2001. Forsberg retires with 885 total points (249G-636A) through 708 career games in the NHL with Colorado, Philadelphia and Nashville.
STAFFORD SHINES Buffalo Sabres forward Drew Stafford has been absolutely dynamite for his team as of late. He notched a hat trick on Feb. 8 in a 7-4 victory over Tampa Bay before adding another trio of goals on Feb. 15 in a 7-6 overtime loss to the New York Islanders to give him a league-leading four hat tricks on the season. Drew Stafford Stafford — whose efforts got him named the NHL’s Second Star for the week ending Feb. 13 — is one of just four players in the National Hockey League since 2005-06 to notch at least four hat tricks in one season, joining Jonathan Cheechoo (2005-06), teammate Thomas Vanek (2007-08) and Eric Staal (2008-09).
HOCKEY WEEKEND ACROSS AMERICA The fourth annual Hockey Weekend Across America, presented by Reebok, ran from Feb. 18-20. Each of the three days associated with Hockey Weekend Across America had a theme — Feb. 18’s was Wear Your Favorite Hockey Jersey, sponsored by ShopUSAHockey.com; Feb. 19’s was Bring A Friend to the Rink, sponsored by the NHL; and Feb. 20’s was Celebrate Local Hockey Heroes, sponsored by the Liberty Mutual Responsible Sports Program. RON BURKLE Ron Burkle has now added a new arena — Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center — to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world. Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 12th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have developed one of the outstanding ownership groups in all of professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his role in negotiations for the new arena deal. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for three-plus seasons and established new standards for television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits while winning acclaim as the No. 1 team in professional sports in Fan Relations. A consistent post-season threat on the ice, the Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in 2009. Young stars such as Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal and others have been signed to long-term contracts, ensuring that the team’s core will remain intact. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.

MARIO LEMIEUX Mario Lemieux always will be remembered for the magic he created on the ice, but one of the crowning achievements of his remarkable career came this season in his role as a businessman — the opening of CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins and Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue. The new arena puts the exclamation point on Lemieux’s lengthy quest to ensure the Penguins’ long-term future in Pittsburgh and provides his adopted hometown with a spectacular state-of-the-art center for professional and collegiate sports, concerts, family shows and other events. “There were so many people who contributed to this project, including local and state political leaders, local business leaders, NHL officials and, of course, our fans,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse, “but I think it’s safe to say that none of this happens without Mario Lemieux.” Even before the reality of CONSOL Energy Center, Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle had turned the Penguins into a premier NHL franchise, winning praise for off-ice business accomplishments in addition to creating a positive, player-friendly atmosphere on the hockey side. The Penguins have sold out a team-record 186 straight games, sold out every suite for three straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits. Over the summer, the Penguins were named the No. 1 team in professional sports in Fan Relations by ESPN The Magazine. Oh, and they won the Stanley Cup in 2009 — the third Cup of Lemieux’s career but his first as an owner. Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVPs trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, in addition to the two Cups. An immaculately gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. DAVID MOREHOUSE Pittsburgh native David Morehouse was named CEO of the Penguins in September and leads the team into an exciting new era at CONSOL Energy Center. Morehouse had served as team president since 2007, overseeing ticket sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development, as well as representing the team in corporate relations and governmental affairs. Under his leadership the Penguins have become one of the top organizations in professional sports — ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations and No. 5 overall as a franchise among 122 pro teams in North America by ESPN The Magazine. As team president, Morehouse implemented a brand strategy that featured a new commitment to marketing, fan interaction and community outreach, as well as a targeted focus on the team’s young fan demographic. Under his leadership, the Penguins have sold out every game for three straight seasons — the sellout streak was at 166 games entering 2010-11— while leading all U.S.-based NHL teams in local TV ratings last season and setting new standards for website traffic and social media. Morehouse joined the Penguins in December, 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project, following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill, as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He was Senior Advisor for the John Kerry for President campaign in 2004, traveling on the campaign plane and serving as Senator Kerry’s traveling chief of staff. He worked in the Clinton-Gore White House in the 1990s, and was Senior Counselor and Trip Director for Vice President Al Gore from 1999-2001. Morehouse grew up in the Beechview section on Pittsburgh. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University, and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have three children and live in Bell Acres.

RAY SHERO Ray Shero, 48, is at the vanguard of the NHL’s new breed of general managers — steeped in family hockey tradition but on the cutting-edge of new technology and modernization in hockey operations, player relations and team management. His fresh ideas and calm but firm management style helped transform the Penguins from a team that did not qualify for the playoffs in 2005-06 to one that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08 and won the Cup in 2008-09. During that time, he has moved boldly to ensure a strong future for the Penguins, signing six key members of the team’s core — Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal, Brooks Orpik and Kris Letang — to long-term contracts. Shero built on the team’s already strong foundation by adding key pieces in the 2010 offseason to set the Penguins up for long-term success. With shrewd maneuvering and an aggressive approach during the first day of free agency, he solidified the team’s blue line with the long-term signings of top-rated defensemen Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek. Shero was named GM on May 25, 2006 and one of his first acts was to declare a goal of building a team that could compete for championships on a yearly basis. He revamped the team’s hockey operations staff and structure, upgraded professional and amateur scouting, added a team operations director and opened new lines of communication with the business side of the organization. In his first season, 2006-07, Shero led his team to its first playoff berth since 2001 and a 47-point improvement in the standings — the fourth-largest improvement from one season to the next in NHL history. Building on that success, the Penguins topped 100 points for the second straight season in 2007-08, winning their first division title since 1998 and advancing to the Stanley Cup Final, where they fell to Detroit. After a rocky start in 2008-09, the Penguins rallied when Bylsma was named head coach in February, finishing 18-3-4 to earn a playoff berth and then defeating Philadelphia, Washington, Carolina and Detroit en route to the Stanley Cup. Along the way, they twice overcame 2-0 deficits in games (against Washington and Detroit), won all four seriesclinching games on the road and won two Game Sevens on the road — including the 2-1 thriller at Detroit for the Cup. Ray’s father, Fred, had won two Stanley Cups as head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers in 1974 and 1975. The Sheros are one of the few father-son tandems to appear on the Cup. The late Fred Shero also was a coach and general manager with the New York Rangers. Ray built his hockey sense and managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University, twice serving as team captain, and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. The native of St. Paul, Minn. is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

JASON BOTTERILL Jason Botterill enters his second full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position on May 22, 2009 by general manager Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockeyrelated matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top-minor league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 34, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins; his responsibilities included salary cap management, professional and amateur scouting and overseeing prospects development. Botterill’s avant-garde approach and understanding of the salary cap has been a major asset for the Penguins. Before joining Pittsburgh, Botterill worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in 1994 and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. He also played 393 career games in the AHL and IHL, recording 127 goals and 257 points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan, where he earned his MBA, and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996, helping his team win gold medals in all three tournaments. He resides in Pittsburgh along with his wife, Andrea.

In just one-plus seasons behind the bench, Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. After being promoted to Penguins head coach in February 2009, Bylsma, 40, directed the team to its third Stanley Cup in franchise history — a feat previously accomplished by legendary coaches “Badger” Bob Johnson and Scott Bowman. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season. Bylsma has the best regular-season winning percentage (.659) in team history, and is tied with Bowman for most postseason victories (23) and series victories (5). He also became the eighth-fastest head coach in NHL history to hit the 50-win mark (78 games). All-time under Bylsma, the Penguins boast a 65-31-11 regular-season record; 35-13-5 home record; 31-17-6 road mark; 40-3-3 when leading after two periods; 42-1-1 when scoring four or more goals; and 43-9-6 when scoring first. In 2009-10 the Grand Haven, Mich. native completed his first full NHL season behind the bench for Pittsburgh, leading the club to a 47-28-7 record for 101 points — breaking 100 points for the sixth time in franchise history and for the third time in the last four years — finishing only two points behind New Jersey for the Atlantic Division title. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular-season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim. He began his coaching career as an assistant with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks of the AHL in 2004-05 and made his NHL coaching debut as an assistant with the New York Islanders in 2005-06. Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh. He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son and reside in the North Hills.

TONY GRANATO Tony Granato, 46, begins his second season on the Penguins’ coaching staff. Granato, among his many responsibilities, works with the Penguins’ forwards and penalty killing units. He oversaw the NHL’s ninth-ranked penalty killing group with an 84.1-percent success rate, and second best on the road at 85.3 percent. Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato spent six seasons behind the bench for the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach from 2002-04 and 2008-09. Granato compiled a 215-104-17-16 record and led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003. Granato played 13 seasons in the NHL with the NY Rangers, Los Angeles and San Jose. In 1997, he was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for overcoming a near career-ending brain injury. In 773 career games, the feisty forward posted 248 goals, 492 points and 1,425 penalty minutes. He appeared in 79 career postseason games and helped lead Los Angeles to a Stanley Cup Final berth in 1993. Granato played four years at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgers’ Hall of Fame in 2000. Granato also played for the U.S. National team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary. Tony and his wife, Linda, are the parents of four children and reside in the South Hills.
TODD REIRDEN Todd Reirden, 39, joined Pittsburgh’s coaching staff on July 31, 2010 after coaching with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the previous two seasons. Reirden, an NHL defenseman for parts of five seasons, works closely with the team’s defensemen. Reirden, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 2009-10, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs. Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with the Bowling Green Falcons (CCHA) — his alma mater. He was a teammate of Bylsma’s during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons at Bowling Green. Selected by New Jersey in the 12th round (242nd overall) of the 1990 NHL Entry Draft, Reirden played professionally for 13 seasons, retiring after the 2006-07 campaign with Graz EC of the Austrian Hockey League. He appeared in 183 NHL games with Edmonton, St. Louis, Atlanta and Phoenix, recording 46 points (11+35) and 181 penalty minutes. Todd and his wife, Shelby, have one son.

GILLES MELOCHE Former NHL goaltender Gilles Meloche is in his fifth season as the Penguins’ full-time goaltending coach and 25th with the organization. Meloche has been instrumental in developing Marc-Andre Fleury into a Stanley Cup-winning netminder. Meloche served as a Penguins scout from 1989-2006 and also doubled as a goaltending coach/consultant during much of that time. He was also part of the staff when the Penguins won Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. A native of Montreal, Quebec, Meloche spent 18 seasons as an NHL goaltender with Chicago, California, Cleveland, Minnesota and Pittsburgh. He played the final three seasons of his career in Pittsburgh following a 1985 trade. Meloche appeared in 788 NHL games during his career, posting a record of 270-351-131 with a 3.64 goals-against average. In 45 career playoff games, he posted a 21-19 record and a 3.48 goals-against average. Gilles and his wife, Sophie, reside in Pittsburgh. MIKE LANGE One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange enters his 35th season with the Penguins and will handle radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.
PHIL BOURQUE Two-time Stanley Cup champion Phil Bourque begins his seventh season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75+89) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88+111) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for FSN Pittsburgh’s coverage of Penguins hockey.
BOB GROVE After a 17-year career as the Penguins beat writer for the Washington Observer-Reporter, Bob Grove joined the team’s radio broadcasts in 1998 as a frequent studio host/co-host and is now in his sixth season as full-time host of the pre- and post-game broadcasts and intermissions on the Penguins Hockey Network. Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or Icetime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts “Heineken Hockey Hour” and “Bob Grove’s Hot Stove” on Penguins Radio at 105.9-HD 2.

COMMUNITY UPDATE PENGUINS FANS MAKE CELL PHONE COLLECTION A SUCCESS Penguins fans provided the assist on February 4 when the team and corporate partner Verizon Wireless hosted the fourth annual Cell Phone Collection for the benefit of Womansplace. As usual, Penguins fans showed why they are the best in the National Hockey League by donating 368 cell phones and accessories which will be utilized in the Verizon Wireless HopeLine® program. The HopeLine program will then refurbish or recycle the phones in an environmentally sound way and distribute the phones — complete with an allotment of complimentary cell phone minutes — to help provide assistance for women and their children affected by domestic violence. Fans were encouraged to donate cell phones, accessories or money upon entering the CONSOL Energy Center gates. Contributions were accepted by Booster Club members until 10 minutes into the first period and every fan who donated was eligible to win autographed Penguins memorabilia. Verizon Wireless also exhibited the spirit of giving by making a monetary donation to Womansplace. The total cash donation from Penguins fans and Verizon Wireless totaled $1,500 and all funds will be used to help end the cycle of domestic violence. Thanks to the generosity of Penguins fans and Verizon Wireless, families affected by domestic violence continue to have lines of support available.

Chance after chance kept coming Jordan Staal’s way. Goalie Jonathan Quick stopped him. Ex-teammate Rob Scuderi cleared Staal’s stuff attempt off the line in the last second of regulation. Staal just couldn’t score. Until. . . Staal’s fourth nailed-on opportunity within the span of a few shifts resulted in him burying the puck behind Quick with 18.4 seconds left in overtime, giving the injury-riddled Penguins a much-needed 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Feb. 10 at CONSOL Energy Center. “Fourth time’s the charm,” Staal said, smiling. It’s been a strange, demanding season for the 6-foot-4, 220-pound behemoth. He missed the Penguins’ first 39 games with a foot injury that segued into a broken hand. Staal returned for the Winter Classic on Jan. 1 at Heinz Field, playing his first game in eight months. . . but nearly every other center on the Penguins’ roster disappeared one by one. Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Mark Letestu — all sidelined for extreme lengths of time. In the middle, Staal is the last man standing. Everyone else is a substitute for another guy. A certain amount of pressure accompanies.

“It’s as much pressure as I put on myself,” Staal said following the win against the Kings. “Obviously, I want to play better. Create more for the team. It’s not going to be easy. [Crosby and Malkin] are two great players. They score a lot of goals. I’m not going to change my game. But I want to play the best I can every night.” Staal had five goals and six assists in his first 19 games. By his own admission, Staal still isn’t 100 percent. The top of his right foot was slashed by a skate during the first game of last spring’s playoff clash with Montreal. Staal actually returned to play later in that series, but ultimately required surgery that led to a complex, lengthy recovery. Then, when Staal was finally close to returning, he broke his right hand during a Nov. 1 practice. Staal’s hand is fine. His foot is still getting there. “It’s still been really difficult,” said Staal, 22. “There are games where I feel unbelievable. There are games when those legs just aren’t working for me. My body’s still not quite there. My right leg’s still a little weak. It’s part of the process. I jumped in the fire, obviously, with those two guys out.” There was no science to Staal’s game-winner against the Kings. Perhaps a bit flustered from being so frequently repelled, he took the simple route. continued on page 62

“I just buried my head and fired as hard as I could,” Staal said, laughing. “The last couple [of shots] were pretty much the same. That one went in. It was a last-ditch effort, and it squeaked through.” Staal kept chuckling when discussing Scuderi’s dramatic, point-saving play at the death of regulation time. “I’ve cheered hard for Scudsy before,” Staal said. “He’s made some great defensive plays, and he did on that one.” The Penguins’ landscape changed dramatically as January became February. Injuries overwhelmed. Matt Cooke’s four-game suspension didn’t help. The Penguins were dressing handfuls of call-ups from their farm team in Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton. Could heightened focus make up for lost firepower? “It’s never going to be pretty hockey,” Staal said after beating LA. “We did a great job battling through everything tonight. [MarcAndre Fleury] played an unbelievable game. He kept us in it, and we got that extra goal. “The guys from WilkesBarre are doing an unbelievable job. They play the same system down there. Staal was impressed by the efforts of former teammate Rob Scuderi as regulation came to a close. They step in, they know what to do, and they’re doing a great job. When those guys come up, they’re ready to play.” Given what he went through during the season’s first half, it’s ironic hearing Staal say he’s lucky when it comes to injuries. But right now, he is. “I’m fortunate,” Staal said, referring to the Penguins’ lengthy disabled list. “It’s been one of those unusual things. It’s something every team deals with. BAGS, BACKPACKS AND PURSES For security purposes, only small personal bags (purses, baby or diaper bags, etc.) will be permitted inside CONSOL Energy Center and all items are subject to search upon entrance. Large bags, coolers, backpacks and sealed packages, including gifts for performers and/or athletes of any kind are not permitted unless otherwise noted on the individual event page.
BANNERS AND SIGNS Banners and signs are permitted for most events, providing they are appropriate, as deemed by building management. FOOD AND BEVERAGES No food or beverages of any kind are permitted to be brought into CONSOL Energy Center. Concession stands located throughout the arena sell a wide variety of food, alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages. Patrons requesting to bring in outside food or beverage due to health conditions should contact Guest Services in advance at info@consolenergycenter.com. Pennsylvania State Law prohibits the sale of alcohol to all persons under the age of 21. Guests are required to show proper identification and proof of age when purchasing alcoholic beverages.

TAG-A-KID In the event a parent and child might be separated at a CONSOL Energy Center event, parents can register their child with the Tag-A-Kid program. A wristband with the parent’s seat location and contact number will be given to the child. Registration is available at the Guest Services office located outside section 104.
VIDEO CAMERAS Use of video or audio recording equipment is strictly prohibited. CONSOL Energy Center reserves the right to confiscate any tape or film and remove the patron from the building.
WHEELCHAIRS A limited number of wheelchairs are available for transporting guests that are disabled to their seating location. Guests can be transported from the gates to their seats. If a wheelchair is needed for the duration of the event, guests must supply their own wheelchairs. Wheelchairs cannot be reserved in advance. Upon arrival, guests can arrange for a wheelchair at any entrance of CONSOL Energy Center. Please see a CONSOL Energy Center employee to assist with wheelchair transportation.

MORGANTOWN U14 LADY BLADES The one-on-one competition features Jimmy Gojkovich/ Kenny Lavelle from Allegheny Badgers Pee Wee 3 against Aimee Feight/ Sydney Smith from Morgantown U14 Lady Blades. On Saturday, October 16, sixteen youth hockey teams from the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) in the Pee Wee age group (age 11 - 12) participated in a shootout competition at CONSOL Energy Center. The event was videotaped to be shown in episodes at Penguins home games. The first round of competition featured heats between two teams striving to advance to the next round. Sixteen teams fielded five skaters shooting against the opposing team’s goalie. After each team competition, an individual shooter and goaltender squared off against the opposing team’s individual tandem for a one-on-one competition. Each winning team and pair of individuals advanced to the next round of eight teams/tandems. The format repeated as teams and individual pairs advanced through the quarterfinal heats to move on to the semi-finals. Robust competition marked the semi-final round for teams and individual tandems. The remaining two teams and individual tandems then had to “leave it all on the ice” in vying for the championship. Early in the second intermission of each Penguins home game the various heats in the competition will be featured. Enjoy each episode.

In its first few months, CONSOL Energy Center also hosted such acts as Lady Gaga and The Eagles; was home to the Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase with Robert Morris; and featured multiple NCAA Division I basketball games, including the “City Game” between Pitt and Duquesne and the Big East/SEC Challenge. In its first season of operation, CONSOL Energy Center also will be home to the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League — bringing indoor football back to the city for the first time in almost 20 years. A funding plan for the new arena project was completed in March, 2007, thanks to the combined efforts of Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, among others. The Sports & Exhibition Authority owns the building on behalf of the city and county, and the Penguins have the lease. The new arena is managed by SMG, with Jay Roberts serving as general manager.

MONTREAL, QUEBEC What was it like growing up in Montreal? I grew up in a good family in a nice little town 15 minutes outside of Montreal, and went to private school there. What was your favorite restaurant? There are a few French ones I like to go to, like La Cau and La Mongerie. What did you do during the summer? I would play soccer and hockey a lot. Where did you and your friends hang out? Most of the time we were playing hockey in the street in front of the house. We would also play video games like most kids. What was your favorite part about growing up there? Playing hockey. My best friend moved next door to me when we were nine years old so every day I was with him and we were playing hockey pretty much every day. What was your favorite sports team? I didn’t really have one, just hockey in general. The Penguins were one of my favorites with [Mario] Lemieux and [Jaromir] Jagr. 120

WHAT’S HAPPENING DEVELOPMENTAL PROGRAMS LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY With the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and Dick’s Sporting Goods over the last three years the Penguins have provided over 2,200 sets of equipment free to local youth ages 4 to 7. This year, four girls-only programs will operate along side of our standard co-ed Little Penguins program. OPEN PRACTICE The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation presented the 2010 Pittsburgh Penguins Open Hockey Practice on Thursday, December 9, 2010 at the brand new CONSOL Energy Center. The event offered a rare opportunity for over 10,000 school students in grades one through eight from across Allegheny County to see the Pittsburgh Penguins at work. Students were entertained leading up to the start of practice with informational videos about behind-thescenes aspects of the team/facility, as well as educational elements related to the game (geography, math, etc.) each student received an activity book as a takeaway.
WELLNESS TRAINING K.A.M.P. AT UPMC SOUTHSIDE Presented by UPMC Sports Medicine and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. Young hockey players were divided into groups and performed a rotation of 10-minute drills, while UPMC Sports Medicine professionals provided assessments. While the athletes trained, their parents received lectures on nutrition, concussions and sports injuries in general. Over 150 athletes and parents attended the event.

CONCUSSION PROGRAM The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, in conjunction with UPMC Sports Medicine, are prepared to announce a comprehensive program for baseline testing and concussion education for all youth sports beginning at the earliest possible ages.

The program, to be revealed in January, is designed to take advantage of the growing popularity of hockey in the tri-state area by affording young players access to existing facilities and newly constructed outdoor multi-use athletic facilities. These programs provide safe areas to play games under the supervision of established organizations. SCHOOL PROGRAMS • FIRST STRIDE In the ultimate Field Trip, participating schools will be provided with a Penguins-themed hockey experience: Students will be transported to and from a local ice arena, outfitted in full hockey equipment and learn fundamental hockey skills. The program will conclude with each child scoring their first goal! • GYM CLASS FOR A DAY This program is designed for 4th and 5th grade physical education classes and will provide basic skills and game instruction. Gym Class for a Day will transform your school gymnasium or parking lot into a dek/ball hockey rink. The Penguins will provide equipment for an ongoing P.E. Hockey Program. Penguins staff will be on hand to assist P.E. teachers in demonstrating and administering basic hockey skills and games. Each student will be provided a hockey ball and Penguins t-shirt to take home and continue practicing their skills.

KITTANNING COASTS PAST SOUTH PARK The South Park Eagles and Kittanning Wildcats each got off to a fast start at the Ice Castle on Feb. 10. Both goaltenders were tested early as each team got a plethora of chances right off the bat. However, a short bench and an influx of penalties would eventually lead to South Park’s defeat. Goaltenders Cameron Langham of Kittanning and Joey Recktenwald of South Park went save for save to start the opening frame. The two teams went shot for shot until Jordan Caler of South Park was ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct. Kittanning proceeded to capitalize on the ensuing power play, getting goals from Heinz Koster, Tyler Crissman and Evan Toy in a 30-second span. Jake Enders and Ian Cole set Toy up for his second of the game shortly after the power play ended to give Kittanning a 4-0 lead, before Hunter Anthony and Heinz Koster each tallied for the Wildcats to put their team up 6-0 at the end of the first. But the Eagles weren’t ready to go down without a fight, as they came out flying in the second period with Ross Guidotti getting them on the board just 15 seconds in. Like the beginning of the first period, Kittanning and South Park opened the middle frame by going back-and-forth while Langham and Recktenwald made save after save in a goaltender’s duel. But Langham ensured that South Park would not mount a comeback by stopping 19 of 20 shots on the night. Kittanning rediscovered their scoring touch again in the third period when Toy set up Enders for his first of the night. Koster produced the play of the game when he fed Josh Flick in front of the net from behind the goal line. The Wildcats won the game by a final score of 8-1.

THE PENGUINS GAME VAULT APRIL 24, 1996 • PENGUINS 3, CAPITALS 2 OT USAIR ARENA If there is one team the Washington Capitals hate to face during the postseason it’s the Pittsburgh Penguins. Time and time again the Capitals have had the Penguins right where they want them — holding a commanding lead in a bestof-seven series — only to watch the Penguins storm back to steal the series away from them. Whether it’s overcoming 2-0 (1995-96; 2008-09) or 3-1 (1991-92; 1994-95) series deficits, the Penguins have had the Capitals number during the postseason. Petr Nedved On April 24, 1996, the Capitals looked to take a 3-1 advantage over the Penguins at the USAir Center in Washington, D.C., but the Penguins, in one of the most epic and dramatic games in National Hockey League history, secured a crucial 3-2 Game Four win on a power-play goal by Petr Nedved near the end of the fourth overtime to even the series at 2-2 en route to a 4-2 series victory. Fifteen years later fans still remember the scintillating image of Nedved firing a shot through a host of bodies past Washington’s Olaf Kolzig with 54 seconds remaining in what was at the time the longest NHL game since 1936. What gets lost in the details is the dramatic chain of events that led both teams to that ultimate tipping point. First, there was the Capitals jumping out to a 2-0 lead by the midway point of the second period on power-play tallies from Michal Pivonka and Peter Bondra. Then you had Penguins goaltender Tom Barrasso exiting after the first period due to injury. He was replaced by Ken Wregget, who made NHL history a little later. Finally, at 18:42 of the second, there was Penguins star Jaromir Jagr getting his team on the board with a game-changing shorthanded tally that cut Washington’s lead in half, 2-1. Barely 40 seconds after Jagr’s goal an altercation broke out between Penguins captain Mario Lemieux and Washington forwards Todd Krygier and Pat Peake. Lemieux received two minutes for slashing, two minutes for instigating, five minutes for fighting and a game misconduct — leaving the Penguins to stage a third-period comeback without the best player in the world. Despite missing their top gun, the Penguins found a way to draw even with the Caps when Nedved scored the first of his two goals eight minutes into the final frame. Neither team scored during the first overtime period as both goaltenders held their fort. Washington had the best scoring chance at 15:44 of the second overtime when Joe Juneau was awarded the first overtime penalty shot in NHL postseason history. But Wregget held his ground and the two teams played on through a third and then fourth overtime before the puck came to Nedved at the top of the near circle as time wound down in period seven. Nedved sent a wrist shot through a screen and behind Kolzig to cap a 3-2 come-frombehind victory for the Penguins in what was at the time the third-longest game in NHL history. From there the Penguins won the next two games as well to close out the Capitals as Pittsburgh advanced all the way to the Eastern Conference finals before falling one game short of returning to the Stanley Cup Final. 147

As Beau Bennett’s freshman season at the University of Denver kicks into the stretch run, the initial projection of head coach George Gwozdecky regarding how long the Penguins’ No. 1 pick in 2010 would remain with the Pioneers still holds. Bennett figures to be a two-year player in the NCAA, just as Gwozdecky had initially assessed after the 2010 Entry Draft. “Absolutely,” Gwozdecky said last week. “I think he’s going to finish real strong this year and then pick up where he left off next fall and be outstanding. “He’s going to be a superstar before he leaves here.” Bennett, a right winger listed at 6-foot-1 and 173 pounds, started slowly, as many players trying to make the transition from the British Columbia Hockey League to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association have. He failed to score in his first six games. And a knee injury suffered on Dec. 3 cost Bennett five more games, as well as the chance to compete for a spot on the U.S. team that competed in the World Junior Championships in December. But since returning to the Denver lineup in mid-January Bennett has been a different player. He emerged from a series against Minnesota on Feb. 11-12 having scored seven points (4-3-7) in seven games in advance of a series against Michigan Tech on Feb. 18-19. Bennett registered seven goals and 10 assists for 17 points in his first 25 collegiate games. He was also plus 1 while playing on Denver’s No. 2 line and No. 1 power-play unit. Perhaps more impressively, Bennett is doing what he does with style. continued on page 150

“He’s so dynamic with the puck he makes plays that aren’t typical hockey-player plays,” Gwozdecky said. “He’s able to see the ice and make these quick little behind-the-back or through-the-legs plays that guys normally aren’t able to make. He makes them very fluently, very easily, without any notice, and then all of a sudden there’s a scoring chance. “That’s from his roller hockey days.” Bennett grew up playing roller hockey in his native California, a background Gwozdecky is convinced promotes the development of fast hands and hand-eye coordination because the surface never changes (ice can get snowy or sloppy as a period progresses) and thus never slows down. Gwozdecky also had high praise for Bennett’s work in the classroom and the weight room, and for how he’s been able to gain confidence as he continues to make the transition to college hockey with the Pioneers, No. 4 in the nation in the Feb. 14 edition of the USCHO.com Top 20. “He’s getting better and better every game,” Gwozdecky said. “He creates a threat whenever he steps on the ice. “Pittsburgh got a dandy.” Defenseman Philip Samuelsson of Boston Philip Samuelsson of Boston College College is another of the Penguins’ college is also getting attention as a top prospects drawing rave reviews. Penguins’ prospect. The Eagles were No. 1 in the Feb. 14 Top 20, just as they had been at the conclusion of last season’s Frozen Four. And Samuelsson, a 6-3, 198-pound former second-round pick in 2009 and the son of former Penguins defenseman Ulf Samuelsson, had been helping to maintain that lofty ranking by finding more of an offensive stride this season as a sophomore at BC. The assist Samuelsson registered in BC’s 7-6 overtime win over Northeastern on Feb. 14, the championship game of the Beanpot Tournament, was his 14th point of the season (4+10), matching the 14 he produced as a freshman (1+13). “I think he’s been offensive ever since he came here,” BC captain Joe Whitney recently told the Boston Globe regarding Samuelsson, a left-handed shooting left defenseman. “He moves the puck extremely well with breakout passes. He sees the whole ice very well so that helps him offensively. When he jumps up into the play he’s that much more of a threat to score and make plays. “He has the offensive ability that helps us win.” Bennett and No. 4 Denver stood at 18-7-5 overall through 30 games and second in the WCHA at 14-5-3, one point behind first-place North Dakota. Samuelsson and No. 1 Boston College won 22 of their first 28 games (22-6-0) and were tied for first in the Hockey East at 16-5-0 (for 32 points; New Hampshire also had 32). An eventual Bennett-Samuelsson clash at the 2011 Frozen Four (April 7-9 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn.) isn’t out of the question. BLYSMA FINDS SUCCESS Dan Bylsma isn’t far removed from his playing days. In fact, forward Pascal Dupuis vividly remembers what it was like playing against him, as he — then with the Minnesota Wild — faced Bylsma, then a forward with the Anaheim Ducks, in the 2003 Western Conference Finals. “He played hard,” Dupuis said of Bylsma, whose team advanced to the Stanley Cup Final that year. “He played the game like he coaches it . . . He’s a coach that understands the game, played the game and isn’t too far removed from it.” That’s why it should come as no surprise that Bylsma, who celebrated his two-year anniversary as head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins Pascal Dupuis remembers Bylsma as on Feb. 15, became the fastest someone who played the game hard. coach in franchise history to record 100 wins (163 games) with a 2-1 overtime victory over Los Angeles on Feb. 10 at CONSOL Energy Center. Bylsma, 40, also became the fifth-fastest coach in National Hockey League history to achieve that milestone, surpassing Washington’s Bruce Boudreau (164 games). “I think since the first day he came in, he’s always had the same attitude,” goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury said of Bylsma’s enduring success in Pittsburgh over these past two years. “We buy into his system and play the way he wants — [which is] always play for the next shift, no matter what happens. Just keep playing and keep playing hard. I think he showed that we can win that way, and he’s a guy that, even through tough times, stays positive. I think that’s good for the guys in the room.” On April 28, 2009 — when general manager Ray Shero removed the “interim” tag from Bylsma before he led them to the Stanley Cup the next month — defenseman Brooks Orpik said that approach to the game is what turned their season around. “We were a really fragile team,” Orpik said. “We had a lot of guys, confidence-wise, that were pretty fragile. It was a make-or-break time of our season. . . But [Bylsma’s] approach, he brings so much energy every day. Whether you win or lose, he doesn’t let you get complacent after a win and doesn’t let you beat yourself up after losses. He brings you in continued on page 172

and teaches you. Guys are supportive of him. There’s a respect factor from the players for him.” Bylsma knew all along that he wanted to be a coach in the National Hockey League. But looking back, he never thought he would get the opportunity this fast — much less achieve the sorts of milestones he’s accomplished in his two short years at the helm of the Penguins. “I did dream of coaching in the National Hockey League. I did think about having good teams,” the Grand Haven, Mich. native said. “Did I think it would happen as quick as it did, 52 games into my head coaching career [with WB/S that] I get a call from Pittsburgh and did I think I’d be holding the Stanley Cup four months after that? No, I didn’t think that. But I hoped and I planned, and I was preparing myself for being a coach in the National Hockey League some day. I thought it might be a couple years into the future, even from now — but all that’s transpired has really been a lot. “A lot has happened quickly and success has happened quickly, and the opportunity to coach a great team and great players has happened quickly. You need that through a long season.” It’s certainly a testament to Bylsma and the mentality he’s cultivated in Pittsburgh that the team continues to do well. And Bylsma’s unique approach to the game hasn’t gone unnoticed by those around the league. In the 2010-11 NHL Player Poll by Hockey Night in Canada and the NHL Players’ Association — which polled 318 players around the league — 21 percent voted Bylsma as the coach they would most like to play for. And while Bylsma does feel his portrayal on HBO Sports “24/7 Penguins/Capitals: Road to the Winter Classic” played a role in the voting, his players don’t. “I think a lot of guys [in the NHL] have seen that he’s had a lot of success since he’s been a head coach, but I think that the way he’s perceived is not just perception, it’s the way he is,” Goligoski said. “Other guys see that. . . I think that’s definitely a credit to him and the person he is and the coach he is.” 172
