AROUND THE NHL The National Hockey League changed the format for this year’s All-Star Game in Carolina. Instead of splitting up teams by conference, the pool of All-Stars voted for two team captains. Carolina’s Eric Staal and Detroit’s Nicklas Lidstrom then got to draft players to be on their team. On Jan. 28, Staal won the “puck flip” and chose Hurricanes teammate Cam Ward as the first overall pick. With his first choice, Lidstrom took Tampa Bay’s Steven Stamkos second overall. Staal made his brother, Marc, sweat it out until one of the later rounds in the draft — even teasing him by choosing Marc’s New York Rangers teammate Henrik Lundqvist — before the brothers were finally united. Toronto’s Phil Kessel was the last player drafted. He took it in stride, and for his good humor, he won a new car and a cash donation to the charity of his choice.

On Jan. 29, Team Lidstrom and Team Staal went head-to-head in the Honda NHL SuperSkills competition. Stars like Alex Ovechkin and P.K. Subban tried to wow the crowd in the Breakaway Challenge. But it was Loui Eriksson who pulled off the most impressive move, skating around the net three times before burying the puck Shea Weber and Zdeno Chara behind Carey Price. However it was Ovechkin who would win the event, as his fancy tricks beat goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, who was doing his own shenanigans in the net. In the hardest shot competition, Shea Weber gave reigning champion Zdeno Chara a run for his money. Weber beat Chara in the preliminary round with a 104.8 mph shot. But in the final, Chara broke his own world record by shooting the puck at a blistering 105.9 mph. Tim Thomas took a tumble in the Fastest Skater competition, as he went head-to-head with Cam Ward, with both in full goalie equipment. Michael Grabner won the event with a time of 14.238. In the end, Team Staal won the SuperSkills competition 33-22 over Team Lidstrom.
GOALIE ABUSE On Jan. 30, Team Lidstrom rallied from a four-goal deficit to beat Team Staal by a score of 11-10 in front of a sold-out crowd at the RBC Center in the 2011 All-Star Game. Chicago’s Patrick Sharp, a write-in candidate, took home the MVP Trophy for scoring a goal and two assists for Team Staal. Fleury started the game in net for Team Lidstrom, and a fast-paced game lacking in defense forced the netminder to surrender four goals early in the first. But he held strong throughout the rest of the period, and by the end of the first 20 minutes, Cam Ward also surrendered four goals to leave the teams tied 4-4 entering the middle frame. 8

RON BURKLE Ron Burkle has now added a new arena — Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center — to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world. Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 12th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have developed one of the outstanding ownership groups in all of professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his role in negotiations for the new arena deal. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for three-plus seasons and established new standards for television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits while winning acclaim as the No. 1 team in professional sports in Fan Relations. A consistent post-season threat on the ice, the Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in 2009. Young stars such as Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal and others have been signed to long-term contracts, ensuring that the team’s core will remain intact. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.

MARIO LEMIEUX Mario Lemieux always will be remembered for the magic he created on the ice, but one of the crowning achievements of his remarkable career came this season in his role as a businessman — the opening of CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins and Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue. The new arena puts the exclamation point on Lemieux’s lengthy quest to ensure the Penguins’ long-term future in Pittsburgh and provides his adopted hometown with a spectacular state-of-the-art center for professional and collegiate sports, concerts, family shows and other events. “There were so many people who contributed to this project, including local and state political leaders, local business leaders, NHL officials and, of course, our fans,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse, “but I think it’s safe to say that none of this happens without Mario Lemieux.” Even before the reality of CONSOL Energy Center, Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle had turned the Penguins into a premier NHL franchise, winning praise for off-ice business accomplishments in addition to creating a positive, player-friendly atmosphere on the hockey side. The Penguins have sold out a team-record 186 straight games, sold out every suite for three straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits. Over the summer, the Penguins were named the No. 1 team in professional sports in Fan Relations by ESPN The Magazine. Oh, and they won the Stanley Cup in 2009 — the third Cup of Lemieux’s career but his first as an owner. Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVPs trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, in addition to the two Cups. An immaculately gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. DAVID MOREHOUSE Pittsburgh native David Morehouse was named CEO of the Penguins in September and leads the team into an exciting new era at CONSOL Energy Center. Morehouse had served as team president since 2007, overseeing ticket sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development, as well as representing the team in corporate relations and governmental affairs. Under his leadership the Penguins have become one of the top organizations in professional sports — ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations and No. 5 overall as a franchise among 122 pro teams in North America by ESPN The Magazine. As team president, Morehouse implemented a brand strategy that featured a new commitment to marketing, fan interaction and community outreach, as well as a targeted focus on the team’s young fan demographic. Under his leadership, the Penguins have sold out every game for three straight seasons — the sellout streak was at 166 games entering 2010-11— while leading all U.S.-based NHL teams in local TV ratings last season and setting new standards for website traffic and social media. Morehouse joined the Penguins in December, 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project, following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill, as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He was Senior Advisor for the John Kerry for President campaign in 2004, traveling on the campaign plane and serving as Senator Kerry’s traveling chief of staff. He worked in the Clinton-Gore White House in the 1990s, and was Senior Counselor and Trip Director for Vice President Al Gore from 1999-2001. Morehouse grew up in the Beechview section on Pittsburgh. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University, and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have three children and live in Bell Acres.

RAY SHERO Ray Shero, 48, is at the vanguard of the NHL’s new breed of general managers — steeped in family hockey tradition but on the cutting-edge of new technology and modernization in hockey operations, player relations and team management. His fresh ideas and calm but firm management style helped transform the Penguins from a team that did not qualify for the playoffs in 2005-06 to one that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08 and won the Cup in 2008-09. During that time, he has moved boldly to ensure a strong future for the Penguins, signing six key members of the team’s core — Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal, Brooks Orpik and Kris Letang — to long-term contracts. Shero built on the team’s already strong foundation by adding key pieces in the 2010 offseason to set the Penguins up for long-term success. With shrewd maneuvering and an aggressive approach during the first day of free agency, he solidified the team’s blue line with the long-term signings of top-rated defensemen Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek. Shero was named GM on May 25, 2006 and one of his first acts was to declare a goal of building a team that could compete for championships on a yearly basis. He revamped the team’s hockey operations staff and structure, upgraded professional and amateur scouting, added a team operations director and opened new lines of communication with the business side of the organization. In his first season, 2006-07, Shero led his team to its first playoff berth since 2001 and a 47-point improvement in the standings — the fourth-largest improvement from one season to the next in NHL history. Building on that success, the Penguins topped 100 points for the second straight season in 2007-08, winning their first division title since 1998 and advancing to the Stanley Cup Final, where they fell to Detroit. After a rocky start in 2008-09, the Penguins rallied when Bylsma was named head coach in February, finishing 18-3-4 to earn a playoff berth and then defeating Philadelphia, Washington, Carolina and Detroit en route to the Stanley Cup. Along the way, they twice overcame 2-0 deficits in games (against Washington and Detroit), won all four seriesclinching games on the road and won two Game Sevens on the road — including the 2-1 thriller at Detroit for the Cup. Ray’s father, Fred, had won two Stanley Cups as head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers in 1974 and 1975. The Sheros are one of the few father-son tandems to appear on the Cup. The late Fred Shero also was a coach and general manager with the New York Rangers. Ray built his hockey sense and managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University, twice serving as team captain, and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. The native of St. Paul, Minn. is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

JASON BOTTERILL Jason Botterill enters his second full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position on May 22, 2009 by general manager Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockeyrelated matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top-minor league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 34, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins; his responsibilities included salary cap management, professional and amateur scouting and overseeing prospects development. Botterill’s avant-garde approach and understanding of the salary cap has been a major asset for the Penguins. Before joining Pittsburgh, Botterill worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in 1994 and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. He also played 393 career games in the AHL and IHL, recording 127 goals and 257 points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan, where he earned his MBA, and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996, helping his team win gold medals in all three tournaments. He resides in Pittsburgh along with his wife, Andrea.

In just one-plus seasons behind the bench, Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. After being promoted to Penguins head coach in February 2009, Bylsma, 40, directed the team to its third Stanley Cup in franchise history — a feat previously accomplished by legendary coaches “Badger” Bob Johnson and Scott Bowman. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season. Bylsma has the best regular-season winning percentage (.659) in team history, and is tied with Bowman for most postseason victories (23) and series victories (5). He also became the eighth-fastest head coach in NHL history to hit the 50-win mark (78 games). All-time under Bylsma, the Penguins boast a 65-31-11 regular-season record; 35-13-5 home record; 31-17-6 road mark; 40-3-3 when leading after two periods; 42-1-1 when scoring four or more goals; and 43-9-6 when scoring first. In 2009-10 the Grand Haven, Mich. native completed his first full NHL season behind the bench for Pittsburgh, leading the club to a 47-28-7 record for 101 points — breaking 100 points for the sixth time in franchise history and for the third time in the last four years — finishing only two points behind New Jersey for the Atlantic Division title. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular-season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim. He began his coaching career as an assistant with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks of the AHL in 2004-05 and made his NHL coaching debut as an assistant with the New York Islanders in 2005-06. Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh. He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son and reside in the North Hills.

TONY GRANATO Tony Granato, 46, begins his second season on the Penguins’ coaching staff. Granato, among his many responsibilities, works with the Penguins’ forwards and penalty killing units. He oversaw the NHL’s ninth-ranked penalty killing group with an 84.1-percent success rate, and second best on the road at 85.3 percent. Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato spent six seasons behind the bench for the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach from 2002-04 and 2008-09. Granato compiled a 215-104-17-16 record and led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003. Granato played 13 seasons in the NHL with the NY Rangers, Los Angeles and San Jose. In 1997, he was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for overcoming a near career-ending brain injury. In 773 career games, the feisty forward posted 248 goals, 492 points and 1,425 penalty minutes. He appeared in 79 career postseason games and helped lead Los Angeles to a Stanley Cup Final berth in 1993. Granato played four years at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgers’ Hall of Fame in 2000. Granato also played for the U.S. National team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary. Tony and his wife, Linda, are the parents of four children and reside in the South Hills.
TODD REIRDEN Todd Reirden, 39, joined Pittsburgh’s coaching staff on July 31, 2010 after coaching with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the previous two seasons. Reirden, an NHL defenseman for parts of five seasons, works closely with the team’s defensemen. Reirden, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 2009-10, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs. Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with the Bowling Green Falcons (CCHA) — his alma mater. He was a teammate of Bylsma’s during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons at Bowling Green. Selected by New Jersey in the 12th round (242nd overall) of the 1990 NHL Entry Draft, Reirden played professionally for 13 seasons, retiring after the 2006-07 campaign with Graz EC of the Austrian Hockey League. He appeared in 183 NHL games with Edmonton, St. Louis, Atlanta and Phoenix, recording 46 points (11+35) and 181 penalty minutes. Todd and his wife, Shelby, have one son.

GILLES MELOCHE Former NHL goaltender Gilles Meloche is in his fifth season as the Penguins’ full-time goaltending coach and 25th with the organization. Meloche has been instrumental in developing Marc-Andre Fleury into a Stanley Cup-winning netminder. Meloche served as a Penguins scout from 1989-2006 and also doubled as a goaltending coach/consultant during much of that time. He was also part of the staff when the Penguins won Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. A native of Montreal, Quebec, Meloche spent 18 seasons as an NHL goaltender with Chicago, California, Cleveland, Minnesota and Pittsburgh. He played the final three seasons of his career in Pittsburgh following a 1985 trade. Meloche appeared in 788 NHL games during his career, posting a record of 270-351-131 with a 3.64 goals-against average. In 45 career playoff games, he posted a 21-19 record and a 3.48 goals-against average. Gilles and his wife, Sophie, reside in Pittsburgh. Tonight the Penguins and Buffalo Sabres meet for the third time this season but first time here at CONSOL Energy Center. Pittsburgh has won both previous games this season, earning a 1-0 decision Nov. 24 and a 5-2 victory Dec. 11. Marc-Andre Fleury made 30 saves for the shutout in November while Pascal Dupuis scored the game’s only goal; Dustin Jeffrey scored one goal and set up another while Craig Adams had two assists in the December victory. . . The Penguins have won four consecutive games against Buffalo since dropping a 4-3 decision in Buffalo on Dec. 29, 2009. Pittsburgh is 11-3-0 in its last 14 games against the Sabres, and all three losses have been by 4-3 scores. . . The Penguins’ 5-2 victory in Buffalo in December snapped a streak of eight consecutive games between the teams being decided by a single goal. The last time Pittsburgh lost to Buffalo by more than one goal was April 3, 2007 at Mellon Arena (1-4). . . The Penguins have also scored first in 11 of their last 14 games against the Sabres, and they have won all three games in that span in which Buffalo scored first. . . Pittsburgh has won two straight home games against Buffalo and five of its last six. . . The Penguins are 2-for-19 (10.5 percent) on the power play over their last six games against the Sabres, although they have scored a power-play goal in five consecutive home games against them (8-for-24, 33.3 percent). . . Given the Penguins’ final game before the break was here against the Islanders, tonight is their fourth straight game against a New York-based team . . . Fleury is 6-1 in his last seven decisions against the Sabres, although he is 3-2-1 in six all-time games against them in Pittsburgh, allowing three or more goals in five of those six games . . . The Penguins face the Capitals in Washington on Sunday, marking the 14th time in their history they will play on Super Sunday . Pittsburgh is 4-6-2 with one tie in the previous 13 such games and has lost three straight . It also marks the fifth time that game has been played in Washington, with the Penguins going 1-2-0 with one tie in the previous four games there . MIKE LANGE One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange enters his 35th season with the Penguins and will handle radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.
PHIL BOURQUE Two-time Stanley Cup champion Phil Bourque begins his seventh season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75+89) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88+111) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for FSN Pittsburgh’s coverage of Penguins hockey.
BOB GROVE After a 17-year career as the Penguins beat writer for the Washington Observer-Reporter, Bob Grove joined the team’s radio broadcasts in 1998 as a frequent studio host/co-host and is now in his sixth season as full-time host of the pre- and post-game broadcasts and intermissions on the Penguins Hockey Network. Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or Icetime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts “Heineken Hockey Hour” and “Bob Grove’s Hot Stove” on Penguins Radio at 105.9-HD 2.

COMMUNITY UPDATE PENGUINS HOST CHILDREN FROM IMMUNE DEFICIENCY FOUNDATION The Penguins gave seven children and their families from the Immune Deficiency Foundation (IDF) a VIP evening on Jan. 25 at CONSOL Energy Center for Pittsburgh’s 1-0 victory over the New York Islanders. The evening was a great success, as the children and their families met head coach Dan Bylsma, hung out with NHL officials in their locker room and had their very own suite to watch the game — complete with a visit from Iceburgh. Mary Beth Bylsma, wife of coach Bylsma, organized the event through the Penguins organization for families involved with the IDF. Over 250,000 people have been diagnosed with this disease in the United States. There are different forms and severities of the illness, with Dan and Mary Beth’s son, Bryan Bylsma, suffers from the selective IgA strain of immune deficiency. Mary Beth also came up with the notion to combine the IDF event with the National Hockey League Officials Association (NHLOA). The NHLOA has their own program to help children in need and their families, known as “Zebras Care.” This links in with the IDF’s main theme, “Think Zebra,” which encourages doctors to think outside the box when diagnosing young children. Scott Driscoll, one of the linesmen for the game, spoke of how reaching out to families in need is so important to the NHLOA. “We try to give the kids a reprieve from what they are going through,” Driscoll said. “It’s a realistic situation that they are in, but when they come here they are happy and smiling and it’s a dream come true for them to attend a hockey game.”

GOLIGOSKI: A PACKERS FAN Those in Greenfield who know and love native son and Packer head coach Mike McCarthy won’t be the only current western Pennsylvania residents pulling for Green Bay in Super Bowl XLV. “I’m a Packers fan,” Penguins defenseman Alex Goligoski has announced. “I’m not going to change now. “I assumed it would be fine, I don’t know. Seventeen weeks out of the year I’m a Steelers fan, too, just not in that game. My parents are from Wisconsin, grew up Packers fans. It’s the way I was raised.” Goligoski is apparently relatively at ease with swimming upstream as far as his sports loyalties are concerned. He’s a native of Grand Rapids, Minn., and attended the University of Minnesota, two places where the Packers are generally considered to be on the wrong end of a heated rivalry. “There’s actually more Green Bay fans in Minnesota than you would think,” Goligoski insisted. Forward Mike Rupp wasn’t sure if he was buying any of that, and had a bit of a problem with Goligoski’s timing, as well. “He’s a Minnesota guy that’s a Packers fan; there’s something wrong with that,” Rupp said. “Then again, I’m from Cleveland so we wouldn’t be having this conversation if everything was the way it should be [and Rupp’s first football love, the Browns, had made it to the Super Bowl]. “Maybe he should have waited to say that, but yeah, he’s a Packers fan.

I’m sure he’ll be in the minority in our room as far as that game goes.” Rupp roots for the Steelers when they’re not playing Cleveland. “It’s a matchup you don’t really want, I think, from either team’s standpoint, so it should be a good one,” he said. “It’s a tough matchup. I think it’s going to be a lot about ball control. I think if [Rashard] Mendenhall can run the ball pretty well I think they have a great shot. If they can keep Green Bay’s offense off the field then it should run in the Steelers’ hands.” Penguins assistant coach Tony Granato played collegiately at the University of Wisconsin and married “a Wisconsin girl.” But Granato, a native of Downers Grove, Ill., is no Packers Backer. “The Green Bay-Chicago thing was more of a thing for me,” Granato said. As for what might happen on Sunday in Dallas, “I have no idea,” Granato said. “I’ll tell you what, though, I couldn’t be more excited. I got a chance to go to the [AFC Championship] game and watch [the Steelers] knock off the Jets, which I was pretty fired up about. “During the hockey season you don’t get a whole lot of chance to get across the street and see the football games. They’ve been great all year. They’ve been fun to watch. They have a lot of personality and character to their team. I think they’re well-coached and disciplined and all that stuff. “I think we can learn as coaches from how they go about business. And obviously to see them advance to the Super Bowl is pretty exciting.” Goligoski isn’t hiding his Packers loyalties. But he isn’t making any predictions, either. “It is what it is, I guess, I’m a Packers fan,” he said. “It’s a good matchup. I don’t know, I think it’s going to be a good game. It’s the matchup I was hoping for. I think it will make for a good Super Bowl.” Added Granato: “I think this is a dream Super Bowl for a football fan, and that’s who I am. To be in Pittsburgh now in my second year and be able to kind of jump on the Steelers’ bandwagon and be able to watch ’em and read the paper every day to see how they’re doing has been pretty exciting. “I really think it’s a great matchup. I think it’s going to be decided late. I don’t think there’s a chance either team can walk away from the other team and pull away early. “Just like any other big game you expect the big players to step up and make the big plays. Both these teams are so well prepared and so well coached, it’s pretty hard to see one team be able to pull away from the other one. THE PENGUINS GAME VAULT MAY 8, 2001 • PENGUINS 3, SABRES 2 OT MELLON ARENA What a difference a couple of games can make. Things looked great for the Penguins in their 2001 Eastern Conference quarterfinals series against the Buffalo Sabres after they swept the opening two games of the series on the road at HSBC Arena. But three-straight losses — including two on home ice in Games Three and Four and an overtime loss in Game Five in Buffalo — put the Sabres back in front, 3-2, leaving the Penguins on the brink of elimination. Mario Lemieux Thanks to a miraculous goal by Mario Lemieux — who else — late in regulation and Martin Straka’s overtime game-winner, the Penguins stole a victory from the jaws of defeat in Game Six and forced a deciding seventh contest at HSBC Arena two nights later. While the dramatic ending was picturesque for the home team, the beginning was not a script the Penguins would have written. Buffalo jumped out to an early lead — never a good thing for the opposition at a time when Sabres goaltender Dominik Hasek was considered the best goaltender in the world — on a Maxim Afinogenov tally midway through the first period. Pittsburgh, which carried the better of the play throughout much of the night while outshooting the Sabres by a 33-18 advantage, evened the score at 1-1 5:14 into the second period on an Alexei Kovalev goal. Despite the fact that the Sabres were being significantly outplayed, they were able to take a slim 2-1 into the final period thanks to Donald Audette’s third goal of the playoffs late in the middle frame. To borrow a phrase from Penguins Hall of Fame broadcaster Mike Lange, Pittsburgh threw everything but the kitchen sink Hasek’s way in the third period in an effort to tie things up, but the Czech native wouldn’t crack. Just when it looked as if time was going to expire on the Penguins’ season, Lemieux added to his legend. With goaltender Johan Hedberg pulled in favor of a sixth attacker, the puck came to the blade of Kovalev at the right point. Kovalev’s slap shot was blocked by a Sabres forward and soared high into the air. After a split second the puck landed in the crease at Hasek’s feet. None of the 11 players on the ice knew where the puck was but one — Lemieux — and he promptly swooped the puck into the net to tie the score at 2-2 with just 1:18 remaining in regulation. Straka made sure Lemieux’s tally didn’t go for naught, as he took a quick pass at the top of the crease from Kovalev and snapped a shot behind Hasek to finish off the 3-2 come-from-behind victory 11:29 into overtime.

TAG-A-KID In the event a parent and child might be separated at a CONSOL Energy Center event, parents can register their child with the Tag-A-Kid program. VIDEO CAMERAS Use of video or audio recording equipment is strictly prohibited. CONSOL Energy Center reserves the right to confiscate any tape or film and remove the patron from the building.
WHEELCHAIRS A limited number of wheelchairs are available for transporting guests that are disabled to their seating location. Guests can be transported from the gates to their seats. If a wheelchair is needed for the duration of the event, guests must supply their own wheelchairs. Wheelchairs cannot be reserved in advance. On Saturday, October 16, sixteen youth hockey teams from the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) in the Pee Wee age group (age 11 - 12) participated in a shootout competition at CONSOL Energy Center. The event was videotaped to be shown in episodes at Penguins home games. The first round of competition featured heats between two teams striving to advance to the next round. Sixteen teams fielded five skaters shooting against the opposing team’s goalie. After each team competition, an individual shooter and goaltender squared off against the opposing team’s individual tandem for a one-on-one competition. Each winning team and pair of individuals advanced to the next round of eight teams/tandems. The format repeated as teams and individual pairs advanced through the quarterfinal heats to move on to the semi-finals. Robust competition marked the semi-final round for teams and individual tandems. The remaining two teams and individual tandems then had to “leave it all on the ice” in vying for the championship. Early in the second intermission of each Penguins home game the various heats in the competition will be featured. Enjoy each episode.

In its first few months, CONSOL Energy Center also hosted such acts as Lady Gaga and The Eagles; was home to the Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase with Robert Morris; and featured multiple NCAA Division I basketball games, including the “City Game” between Pitt and Duquesne and the Big East/SEC Challenge. In its first season of operation, CONSOL Energy Center also will be home to the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League — bringing indoor football back to the city for the first time in almost 20 years. A funding plan for the new arena project was completed in March, 2007, thanks to the combined efforts of Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, among others. The Sports & Exhibition Authority owns the building on behalf of the city and county, and the Penguins have the lease. The new arena is managed by SMG, with Jay Roberts serving as general manager.

GRAND RAPIDS, MINNESOTA What was it like growing up in Grand Rapids? It was great. I loved it. It was a small town, about 7,000 people. You make your own fun riding bikes around town, getting into trouble. What was your favorite sports team? For football, the Green Bay Packers. For baseball, the Minnesota Twins. I don’t know if I really had a favorite hockey team. The North Stars left [in 1993], so there wasn’t a National Hockey League team there until the Wild came when I was about 16. What was your favorite restaurant? Forest Lake Restaurant. It was just kind of a locally run sports bar and grill. What did you and your friends do for fun? We’d bike around town and we have a few lakes up there, so we’d go to friends’ houses that were on lakes and go out on the boats. What was your favorite part about growing up there? Probably the small-town feel where you don’t have to lock your doors. You don’t have to really worry about anything, everyone knows everyone. It’s kind of refreshing. What’s an underrated part of your hometown? It’s a really nice town. It was actually in a book, “50 Best Small Towns in America.” It’s clean, it’s nice and there’s lots of lakes around it.

WHAT’S HAPPENING DEVELOPMENTAL PROGRAMS LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY With the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and Dick’s Sporting Goods over the last three years the Penguins have provided over 2,200 sets of equipment free to local youth ages 4 to 7. This year, four girls-only programs will operate along side of our standard co-ed Little Penguins program. OPEN PRACTICE The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation presented the 2010 Pittsburgh Penguins Open Hockey Practice on Thursday, December 9, 2010 at the brand new CONSOL Energy Center. The event offered a rare opportunity for over 10,000 school students in grades one through eight from across Allegheny County to see the Pittsburgh Penguins at work. Students were entertained leading up to the start of practice with informational videos about behind-thescenes aspects of the team/facility, as well as educational elements related to the game (geography, math, etc.) each student received an activity book as a takeaway.
WELLNESS TRAINING K.A.M.P. AT UPMC SOUTHSIDE Presented by UPMC Sports Medicine and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. Young hockey players were divided into groups and performed a rotation of 10-minute drills, while UPMC Sports Medicine professionals provided assessments. While the athletes trained, their parents received lectures on nutrition, concussions and sports injuries in general. Over 150 athletes and parents attended the event.

CONCUSSION PROGRAM The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, in conjunction with UPMC Sports Medicine, are prepared to announce a comprehensive program for baseline testing and concussion education for all youth sports beginning at the earliest possible ages.
PENGUINS FOUNDATION CHARITY ASSIST RAFFLE The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Penguins Foundation are pleased to host the Penguins Foundation Charity ASSIST Raffle, raising money for a variety of local charities in the western Pennsylvania area. NEW SPORTS INITIATIVES — COMING IN 2011 OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES In its efforts to fight the sedentary tendencies of America’s youth, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation is excited to offer outdoor programs to promote fun and organized physical activity. The program, to be revealed in January, is designed to take advantage of the growing popularity of hockey in the tri-state area by affording young players access to existing facilities and newly constructed outdoor multi-use athletic facilities. These programs provide safe areas to play games under the supervision of established organizations. SCHOOL PROGRAMS • FIRST STRIDE In the ultimate Field Trip, participating schools will be provided with a Penguins-themed hockey experience: Students will be transported to and from a local ice arena, outfitted in full hockey equipment and learn fundamental hockey skills. The program will conclude with each child scoring their first goal! • GYM CLASS FOR A DAY This program is designed for 4th and 5th grade physical education classes and will provide basic skills and game instruction. Gym Class for a Day will transform your school gymnasium or parking lot into a dek/ball hockey rink. The Penguins will provide equipment for an ongoing P.E. Hockey Program. Penguins staff will be on hand to assist P.E. teachers in demonstrating and administering basic hockey skills and games. Each student will be provided a hockey ball and Penguins t-shirt to take home and continue practicing their skills.

CLAIR DEFEATS BALDWIN WHITEHALL IN OUTDOOR CLASSIC The setting couldn’t be any more perfect, as a cold snowy night in South Park played host to the final game of the High School Hockey Outdoor Charity Series, which benefitted the Paul Sciullo Scholarship. As snowflakes fell from the sky, you could hear fans in the stands comment on the atmosphere. “This is perfect!” one man said while standing along the boards. “This is how the game is supposed to be played.” Wes Penrod stood behind the boards holding onto his son Will, no older than five, as they stared at the ice with a look of amazement on their faces. “It’s an incredible setting on a picture-perfect night,” Wes Penrod said. “I’m amazed at the quality of hockey being played here tonight.” From the drop of the puck, Upper St. Clair had Baldwin Whitehall on their toes. After Baldwin Whitehall’s Dallas Becker went off for elbowing, Highlanders goalie Mike Cundra was forced to make a series of saves on the penalty kill. Just as it seemed Baldwin Whitehall would be able to weather the storm, Upper St. Clair forward Justin Selep tallied his first of three goals. Upper St. Clair played a majority of the first period on the penalty kill, but shorthanded goals from CJ Murray and Stephen Gielarowski made it look like they were on the power play. Ryan Haleski made the score 4-0 before Baldwin Whitehall got on the board with a goal from Neil Isler. Upper St. Clair quickly countered with a shorthanded tally from Selep, assisted by goalie Mike Stine. Baldwin Whitehall started the second period with goalie Zach Christman in between the pipes. A strong start from Christman made a comeback seem possible until Michael Segerdahl put Upper St. Clair up 6-1. Robbie Markwell’s goal made the score 7-1 with assists from Conner Ackerman and Ryan Haleski. Selep ended the middle frame with his third and final goal of the night. Upper St. Clair forward Stephen Gielarowski added his second goal of the night to start the third period. The Panthers would finish the night with two goals from Luke Stork and a goal from Daniel Crockett, with the only third-period tally for Baldwin Whitehall coming at the 8:19 mark with Isler capitalizing on a penalty shot for his second goal of the evening. Upper St. Clair defeated Baldwin Whitehall by a final score of 12-2.

FLEURY AND LETANG ENJOY ENTIRE ALL-STAR EXPERIENCE In normal circumstances, Penguins defenseman Kris Letang does everything in his power to keep the puck away from goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury. But during NHL All-Star weekend, which took place Jan. 28-30 in Raleigh, N.C., Letang did everything he could to get the puck past Fleury as the Penguins teammates went to different teams during the All-Star Draft on Jan. 28. While Fleury returned to Pittsburgh with bragging rights, as he and Team Lidstrom won the All-Star Game by a score of 11-10, Letang had a great outing for Team Staal. He netted two goals in his first-ever All-Star Game, logging 18:19 of ice time playing alongside Marc Staal. “It’s a game where you want to be spectacular, you want to give a good show for the fans,” Letang said, who finished second overall in All-Star fan voting and first among blueliners as a © Getty Images

To top it off, his team got back every score they surrendered, mounting a furious four-goal comeback to even the score at 4-4 at the end of the first. “We finished the period even,” Fleury said. “That felt a little better. It was not too bad. If you look at the whole period, it was okay. . . I wish that many goals didn’t go in, but I had a good time.” Fleury had an outstanding outing the night before in the SuperSkills Challenge. Team Lidstrom captains Nicklas Lidstrom, Martin St. Louis and Patrick Kane chose Fleury to participate in the Elimination Shoot Out and Breakaway Challenge. He was particularly impressive during the Elimination Shoot Out. Fleury allowed just two goals through 11 rounds, stoning Team Staal snipers like Sedin, Rick Nash, Jeff Skinner, Ryan Kesler, Keith Yandle — and Letang. “I can go home with my head held up and give it to him, make fun of him,” Fleury joked of stopping his Penguins teammate. “He said he tried to flip it over me. It was a fun weekend,” Fleury said. “It was a great time. It’s nice to meet some of the guys we usually play against. Everyone treated us well. It was fun.” Letang agreed. “Everything was great,” he said. “It’s a really good environment. I enjoyed the whole weekend. . . The city treated us well, I had a lot of fun. It’s an experience I will always have. I really enjoyed it.”

Craig Adams had no delusions about his marksmanship after his short-range goal gave the Penguins a 1-0 win over the New York Islanders at CONSOL Energy Center on Jan. 25. “It was on my stick, and I just whacked at it,” said Adams. “I think it went through his legs.” Finesse isn’t Adams’ strong suit. Grit is. When he’s not whacking the puck, Adams is chasing it down. Or defending an opponent that has it. Playing the body in either case. Adams was on the ice at Detroit’s Joe Louis Arena at the conclusion of Game Seven of the Stanley Cup Finals in 2009. That tells you all you need to know about Craig Adams. Adams probably won’t net a hat trick to beat Washington or Philadelphia. But the lone goal in a blood-and-guts game against the Islanders? Believable. “Anybody can put one in,” said the 6-foot, 197-pound forward. “We kept throwing it at the net. We had some chances on rebounds. You had the feeling that’s the way one was going to go in.” The tally gave Adams three goals and six Craig Adams plays a huge part in the Penguins penatly-kill which assists in 48 games as ranked No. 1 in the NHL (88.5 percent) heading into the All-Star break. the Penguins headed into the All-Star break. But if you want stats that better illustrate the Harvard University product’s true worth, look at the Penguins’ penalty-killing numbers. Going into the All-Star break, the Penguins’ PK ranked No. 1 in the NHL with a success rate of 88.5 percent and had eight short-handed goals. Adams is a huge cog in the Penguins’ penalty-killing machine, and has especially excelled during 5-on-3 disadvantages. “It’s a lot of fun,” Adams said of his penalty-killing chores. “It’s like scoring goals, goaltending, the power play, anything — when you have confidence, it gets easier. I don’t think we ever think we’re going to give one up.” When asked about the Penguins’ 5-on-3 PK tactics, Adams replied, “The tactics are actually: Don’t move very much. Try and stay pretty tight, obviously. We’ve got a pretty good idea of who their shooters are. What they’re trying to do, who they want to take the shot, and obviously, you need a couple guys trying to block those shots.” The Penguins had a severe injury situation just prior to the All-Star break as Sidney Crosby (concussion) and Evgeni Malkin (knee/sinus infection) both went down, missing games simultaneously for the first time since Malkin joined the Penguins in 2006. The Penguins persevered, winning two of three. The Penguins lost 2-0 at New Jersey on Jan. 20 before topping Carolina 3-2 at CONSOL Energy Center on Jan. 22, then posting the aforementioned win vs. the Islanders.

“We play the same game,” Adams insisted. “We want to have the same identity. Obviously, we’re a better team with Sid and Geno. That’s no secret. But [their absence] doesn’t change the way we play. “I think we’re playing pretty well. But we’ve been a bit inconsistent since our big [12-game win] streak ended in December. We just need to be more consistent. We’ve had some really good games, and some not-so-good games.” Looking at the victory over the Islanders, Adams said, “You saw what the identity of this team is. What it should be. We need more nights like tonight.” True, but a few more goals wouldn’t hurt.
