IRON-MAN CAP: Capitals

D Karl Alzner’s appearance in the final game before the All-Star break was his 423rd in succession, which moved Alzner ahead of Bob Carpenter (422) and into sole possession of first place on the franchise’s all-time consecutive games played list.

Alzner’s streak was the sixthlongest for an NHL defenseman since 1943-44, trailing Jay Bouwmeester (737), Keith Yandle (518), Karlis Skrastins (495), Tim Horton (486) and Cory Sarich (453). Alzner’s run was also the fifth-longest active streak in the NHL, behind Andrew Cogliano (668), Yandle (518), Patrick Marleau (507) and Phil Kessel (493).

Since beginning his streak at the outset of the 2010-11 season Alzner ranked sixth in the NHL with 804 blocked shots.

PILING UP Ws: LA’s 3-2

overtime victory on Jan. 24 at San Jose allowed the Kings to reach the 30-win plateau in a franchise-record 48 games (30-15-3). The previous mark had been 51, established in 1980-81 and matched in 2005-06). The Kings won an NHL-leading six games when trailing entering the third period on the way to their first 30 victories.

EXTRAATTACKER PROWESS:

Colorado’s 2-1 shootout victory over St. Louis on Jan. 22 included the Avalanche pulling the goaltender in favor of a sixth attacker and scoring in the third period for the sixth time this season. Colorado also had an extra-attacker goal on Jan. 18 at Winnipeg on a delayed penalty.

NEW HOME IN NASHVILLE:

Predators C Ryan Johanson produced nine points (3+6) in his first nine games after being acquired by Nashville in a trade with Columbus on Jan. 6.

Johanson had 26 points (6+20) in 38 games with Columbus.

STINGY DUCKS:

Anaheim allowed an NHL-low 23 goals (not including shootouts) in its first 13 games after the Christmas break and led the NHL in goalsagainst per game (1.77) in that span. The Ducks led the NHL this season at that juncture in fewest goals allowed in the first period (23), fewest goals allowed in the third period (30) and fewest shots allowed (1,252).

THE SERIES [VS] DUCKS

On Feb. 8 the Penguins host the Anaheim Ducks, who won the only previous game between the teams this season. Corey Perry and Chris Stewart scored second-period goals and Pittsburgh native John Gibson stopped 23 shots to help Anaheim rally from a 1-0 deficit and earn a 2-1 win in Anaheim on Dec. 6. Olli Maatta scored a first-period goal for Pittsburgh, which had its four-game winning streak against the Ducks snapped. . . The Penguins are 9-4-0 in their last 13 games against Anaheim, with all four losses coming by a single goal. The last time the Ducks beat Pittsburgh by more than one goal was Dec. 15, 2002 in Anaheim (5-0). . . The Penguins are 6-1-0 in their last seven home games against the Ducks, the only loss coming Feb. 15, 2012 (2-1). . . Pittsburgh has been perfect on the penalty kill in eight of its last nine games against Anaheim, killing 21 of 24 penalties over those nine games.

WHAT PENGUINS RELATED STORY DO YOU RETELL MOST OFTEN? I met my fiancée, Amy, at the Home Opener in 2006.

We began dating shortly after, and also started a personal goal to visit all 30 NHL arenas. Nine years later, we’ve attended over 50 Penguins away games and finally accomplished our goal in April of 2015, visiting our 30th and final arena in Ottawa. If it wasn’t for the Penguins, we probably never would have met and wouldn’t have done any of that!

DO YOU REMEMBER WHERE YOU WERE WHEN THE PENGUINS WON THE CUP IN ‘91, ‘92 OR ‘09? I was only 4-5 years-old when they won in ’91 and ’92, so I was sitting on the couch watching TV with my dad. In ’09, I was in Detroit for Game Seven with my fiancée, parents and a group of friends, and we celebrated down by the glass after the game. It’s a night I will never forget!

LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY

Since the program began in 2008-09, over 6,200 boys and girls ranging from 4-8 years-old have participated in the Little Penguins Learn to Play Hockey program.

Currently, the program is in full swing across the area in 25 of the 30 different hockey facility locations.

The participants are experiencing a new love for the game.

One thousand Pittsburgh area children received free head-to-toe hockey equipment this season, thanks to the combined efforts of Sidney Crosby, the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, CCM and DICK’S Sporting Goods. Participating facilities stretch from Youngstown, OH to Morgantown, WV; as well as Wheeling, WV to Altoona, PA. Each participating facility holds eight to ten sessions for the kids so they can experience hockey and hopefully continue to enjoy the game.

Upon completion of the Little Penguins Learn to Play Hockey Program, the Pittsburgh Penguins aim to advance the skills of these young hockey players in the Mite Development League.

With three different skill levels in the Mite Development League and experienced instructors, all participants receive great hands on coaching. The Pittsburgh Penguins and the various rinks who host the Mite Development League are committed to growing the game of hockey throughout the region, and providing a fun and educational experience at the same time.

If you missed the registration for this year’s Little Penguins Learn to Play Hockey Program, registration will begin in November of 2016. It was the perfect opportunity: The Penguins were up 2-0 in the game’s final minute. New Jersey pulled the goalie. The puck was shot right into Marc-Andre Fleury’s catching glove, and he had room to drop and shoot. The puck went up… …but not quite over. The last man back, Devils defenseman Dave Schlemko, gloved down the puck.

Fleury, 31, has done a lot since his NHL debut in 2003. Check out his stats, and check out his Stanley Cup ring. But he hasn’t scored a goal, and he wants to.

“I have to,” Fleury corrected, smiling. “Since my first day in the NHL, I wanted to get a goal. Twelve years later, I still haven’t.”

Fleury’s teammates aren’t bothered, because the 6-foot-2, 180-pound Quebec native is a lot better at stopping pucks than he is at shooting them.

Fleury was 19-11-5 with a 2.28 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage going into the NHL All-Star break. He finished off that shutout against the Devils on Jan. 26 at CONSOL Energy Center, giving him four on the season.

The Penguins have averaged almost nine more shot attempts per game since Mike Sullivan assumed the coaching reins Dec. 12.

They’ve also allowed an average of eight more shot attempts, and that’s okay with Fleury.

“I don’t mind shots,” Fleury said. “It’s less boring. You get a little action.

“It depends on the quality of the shots: When we give up a lot of outside shots, that’s pretty basic.”

The aforementioned home victory over New Jersey wasn’t easy. The Devils outshot the Penguins 11-7 in the first period, continuing a disturbing trend of slow starts by the Penguins. But Fleury held firm, Sidney Crosby scored a power-play goal at the period’s 15:27 mark, and the Penguins took control.

It wasn’t as difficult as the previous two games, both at home: The Penguins fell behind 2-0 vs. Philadelphia on Jan. 21, then 2-0 and 3-1 against Vancouver on Jan. 23 but bounced back to win both times.

“We’ve talked about it a lot,” Fleury said, referring to the Penguins’ slow starts. “We’re aware of what’s going on. We just can’t seem to get it going right away.

“It was busy at the start of the game [against New Jersey].

After that, we dominated the play a lot. After maybe half the [first] period, we picked it up a little bit.” continued on page 31

The Devils’ first-period flurry was compounded by heavy traffic in front of Fleury’s cage: “Some [of the shots], I could see.

They hit a couple of posts. That was big. The guys did a good job boxing out, to let me see.

“As long as I can see the puck leave the guy’s stick, [I] have a good idea of what’s going on.”

Fleury totaled 25 saves en route to shutting out the Devils. The zero was his second in four games.

But never mind shutouts. Fleury wants a goal.

“I shot the puck up there, but it didn’t make it,” Fleury said of his attempt vs. New Jersey. “I think it was maybe a little bit left. I got good wood on it. [Schlemko] had to jump. He was pretty far back, too. I’m surprised he was still back there.

“No breaks on those. Another time, hopefully.”

Or, maybe not. Fleury admits his track record isn’t good when it comes to illuminating the other red light: “As I kid, I [stunk] at scoring.”

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, has been co-owner of the Penguins since 1999.

Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including nine straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past eight years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009.

Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America.

Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups.

A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033).

After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era.

In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org.

David Morehouse is chief executive officer and president of the Penguins, overseeing all aspects of the team’s operation.

The Penguins have become one of the NHL’s strongest business entities during his tenure — selling out every game for eight-plus seasons, setting new standards for corporate sales and television ratings and increasing their focus on innovative youth marketing.

Morehouse joined the team as a consultant on the arena project in 2004 and was named team president in April 2007.

Jim Rutherford is in his second season as executive vice president and general manager of the Penguins. During his first year, the Penguins qualified for their ninth-consecutive postseason berth despite playing a majority of the final two months without arguably the team’s top-three defensemen.

Rutherford spent the previous 20 years as GM of the Carolina Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers franchise from 1994-2014 where he was a key architect of the Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship squad and their 2002 Stanley Cup finalist team.

In addition to his general manager duties, he also served 20 years as president of Carolina/Hartford, taking the post in 1994. In his role as president/GM, Rutherford oversaw operations on both the hockey and business sides of the organization. He helped spearhead the efforts to bring the 2004 NHL Draft and 2011 NHL All-Star Game to Raleigh.

Over the course of his executive career, Rutherford has won multiple awards, including The Hockey News‘ Executive of the Year in 2002 and ’06. Additionally, he was voted by his NHL general management peers as Sporting News Executive of the Year in 2006.

Before his 21 years in the NHL, Rutherford was recognized as the 1987 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Executive of the Year, and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Executive of the Year in back-to-back years with the Windsor Spitfires in 1987 and ’88. He oversaw a Spitfires team that won the OHL championship in 1988 and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup. In addition to his time with Hartford/Carolina, Rutherford also spent over 30 years working with Compuware Sports Corporation, overseeing the purchase of Windsor in 1984 and bringing the first American-based OHL franchise to Detroit in 1989.

Rutherford played 13 years as a goaltender in the NHL, appearing in 457 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit. Selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round (10th overall) in the 1969 NHL Draft, he represented Canada at the 1977 and ’79 World Championships.

Jason Botterill is in his second season as associate general manager after being promoted from assistant general manager on June 6, 2014.

As associate GM, Botterill assists GM Jim Rutherford on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also serves as GM of the Penguins’ top minorleague affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL). Botterill was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the first round (20th overall) in 1994 NHL Draft and played in 88 NHL games for Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo before his career was cut short due to injury. He also suited up for 393 career minor-league games in the American and International Hockey Leagues, tallying 257 career points.

A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four years of college hockey at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to an NCAA title in 1996.

Botterill represented Canada in three straight World Junior Championships from 1994-96, winning gold medals all three years.

Following his playing career, he received his MBA from his alma mater, the University of Michigan.

BILL GUERIN ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER

Bill Guerin is in his second season as assistant general manager after serving as Pittsburgh’s player development coach from 2011-14.

Guerin’s responsibilities as assistant general manager include serving as a liaison between the players and management. As the Penguins’ player development coach, Guerin was instrumental in helping develop the Penguins’ minor league, junior and college prospects.

Originally drafted by New Jersey in the first round (5th overall) of the 1989 NHL Draft, Guerin won two Stanley Cups (Pittsburgh, 2009; New Jersey, 1995) and spent 18 seasons in the NHL — including his final two with the Penguins. Guerin’s leadership and on-ice performance after being acquired at the NHL trade deadline was a key in Pittsburgh’s ’09 title.

Guerin, a four-time NHL All-Star, tallied 429 career goals and 856 points in 1,263 career NHL games, including five 30-goal and two 40goal seasons. He was elected to the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013.

Jason Karmanos is in his second season as the vice president of hockey operations after being named to his current position on June 12, 2014.

Karmanos assists GM Jim Rutherford in all aspects of hockey operations.

Before joining Pittsburgh, Karmanos spent 15 years as an executive for the Carolina Hurricanes from 1998-2013, serving various roles with Carolina, including executive director of hockey operations and vice president/assistant general manager under Rutherford.

Karmanos played four years of college hockey at Harvard University from 1992-96, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors. In 1994, Karmanos represented Team USA at the World Junior Championships, compiling three points (1G-2A) in seven games.

After graduating, Karmanos attended training camp with the Penguins in 1996 and played pro hockey for two seasons before his career was cut short due to an eye injury.

MIKE SULLIVAN HEAD COACH

Mike Sullivan was named the 22nd head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins on Dec. 12, 2015.

Prior to being promoted to Pittsburgh, Sullivan, 47, spent the first two-plus months of the 2015-16 season as the head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. During his 23-game tenure in WB/S, his club went 18-5, which was good enough for first place in the Atlantic Division. Sullivan’s club also had a franchise-best 11-game winning streak.

Sullivan has 13 years of coaching experience at the professional level. He served two seasons as the Boston Bruins head coach from 2003-06. Sullivan also spent 11 years as an NHL player from 1991-2002.

A native of Marshfield, Massachusetts, Sullivan began his coaching career in 2002-03, starting the season as head coach of the AHL’s Providence Bruins before joining the NHL’s Bruins as an assistant coach late in the year. He was promoted to head coach of the NHL Bruins at age 35 in 2003-04, winning a Northeast Division crown in the first of his two years at the helm.

As the head coach in Providence, Sullivan compiled a record of 41-17-9-4 (.669 pct.) in 71 games before his promotion to Boston.

Sullivan served as an NHL assistant coach for seven-consecutive years from 2007-14 with Tampa Bay, the NY Rangers and Vancouver.

In addition to his professional coaching experience, Sullivan has twice coached the United States internationally. He was the head coach at the 2007 World Championship and an assistant coach at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy.

During the 2014-15 season, Sullivan was a member of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks player development staff.

Sullivan’s 11-year NHL career began with the expansion San Jose Sharks in 1991-92 and included stops in Calgary, Boston and Arizona.

A penalty-kill specialist, Sullivan recorded 54 goals (16 shorthanded) and 136 points in 709 NHL games.

Sullivan was drafted by the New York Rangers in the fourth round (69th overall) of the 1987 NHL Draft. He played four years of collegiate hockey at Boston University from 1986-90, serving as the Terriers captain as a senior. Sullivan represented the U.S. as a player at the 1988 World Junior Championship.

RICK TOCCHET ASSISTANT COACH

Rick Tocchet is in his second season as an assistant coach of the Penguins.

In his current role, Tocchet works closely with the team’s forwards.

Tocchet was hired as an assistant coach by Tampa Bay in July, 2008 and was elevated to interim head coach on Nov. 14 of that year. He was named head coach following the ‘08-09 season, where he remained in that position until 2010.

Tocchet began his coaching career as an assistant with the Colorado Avalanche for two years (2002-04) before spending one season (‘05-06) with the Phoenix Coyotes.

A veteran of 18 NHL seasons, including parts of three seasons with the Penguins from 1992-94, Tocchet won a Stanley Cup championship with Pittsburgh in 1992. The four-time NHL All-Star (1989, ‘90, ‘91, ‘93) played 1,144 career NHL games and totaled 440 goals, 952 points and 2,972 penalty minutes in his NHL career. Tocchet was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the sixth round (125th overall) of the 1983 NHL Draft.

JACQUES MARTIN ASSISTANT COACH

Assistant coach Jacques Martin enters his third season in the Penguins organization. In his current role, he oversees the club’s defensemen and its penalty killing unit.

Martin spent last year as a senior advisor to Penguins GM Jim Rutherford, and the season before that as an assistant coach.

Martin has over 25 years of NHL experience as a general manager, head coach and assistant coach with Pittsburgh, Montreal, Florida, Ottawa, Colorado/Quebec, Chicago and St. Louis.

He won 613 games and made 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons as an NHL head coach. He won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s ‘most outstanding coach’ with Ottawa in 1999 and was a finalist for the award on three other occasions.

Martin won gold medals as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2002 Olympics and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. He was also an assistant coach on the 2006 Canadian Olympic Team.

MIKE BALES GOALTENDING COACH

Mike Bales is in his third season as the Penguins goaltending coach after serving the previous two seasons as the team’s goaltending development coach from 2011-13.

Under his guidance, Marc-Andre Fleury has compiled two of the finest seasons of his career. During the 2014-15 campaign, Fleury established a franchise record with 10 shutouts, a figure that led the entire NHL. When he was in his role as goaltending development coach, Bales helped lead the scouting efforts that led to Pittsburgh choosing reigning AHL Goaltender of the Year Matt Murray and 2013 second-round pick Tristan Jarry.

Bales, a native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the NHL with Boston and Ottawa. Bales also saw action with teams in the AHL, IHL, Germany, Sweden and Northern Ireland. He was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the fifth round (105th overall) of the 1990 NHL Draft.

Before turning pro, Bales played three collegiate seasons with Ohio State University of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) from 1989-92.

Travis Williams is in his eighth season as a senior executive with the Pittsburgh Penguins, currently serving as chief operating officer and overseeing finance, legal affairs, technology, business development and arena operations. He also assists CEO David Morehouse in the day-to-day management of the business.

In addition, Williams serves as the Penguins’ point man on the development of the former Civic Arena site and oversaw the construction of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry.

Williams joined the Penguins in 2008 as senior vice president of business affairs/legal counsel. One of his first responsibilities was to guide the construction and development of the team’s new arena, CONSOL Energy Center — which was completed on time and under budget. He now serves as the team’s liaison with building manager AEG Facilities, working closely with AEG on all arena-related events, including major concerts and national-level sporting events.

Previously, Williams was a partner at Reed Smith LLP, where he specialized in mergers and acquisitions, investment management, commercial lending and general corporate matters. During his 12 years at Reed Smith, Williams also represented several sports franchises, regional sports networks and other sports-related businesses.

A native of Indianapolis, he graduated from Penn State and received a Juris Doctorate from Duquesne University, summa cum laude. While at Duquesne, he was a member of the Duquesne Law Review and the Duquesne Business Law Journal.

TERRY KALNA

SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT OF SALES AND BROADCASTING

Terry Kalna is in his first season as senior vice president of sales and broadcasting following an 18-year career in motorsports management. Kalna, 39, a native of Greensburg, oversees corporate sales, partnership activation, ticket sales and premium sales in addition to the Penguins Radio Network. He also is the primary contact with ROOT SPORTS, the Penguins’ local television rightsholder.

Kalna spent the previous eight years as managing director of International Speedway Corporation, a sister company to NASCAR that operates 13 racetracks across the country — including Daytona, Talladega, Darlington and Richmond.

Kalna also has deep connections to hockey. He has been a member of USA Hockey’s Marketing Council since 2011 and recently earned his USA Hockey Level 5 coaching certification. He played youth hockey in Greensburg and for the Amateur Penguins before moving on to prep school hockey at Tabor Academy and Cranbrook Kingswood School. He graduated from Hobart College in 1998 with degrees in economics and history.

A FIGHTING

HEART Like most healthy young women, Heather Blum didn’t think that she had a heart problem when she began feeling weak and run down in October 2012.

But when her symptoms didn’t improve and a fast heartbeat kept her awake at night, her husband Cole took her to the emergency room. Heather was transferred almost immediately to UPMC Presbyterian, where doctors discovered a serious heart problem.

Heather’s heart function was severely reduced, likely because of an abnormal and very fast heart rhythm of nearly 180 beats per minute. Efforts to control her fast rate with medicines and even a heart catheter were unsuccessful. Her heart condition continued to worsen, and surgeons at the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute took Heather for surgery to control her heart rhythm and implant a left ventricular assist device, or LVAD, in her chest to take over the work of her weakened heart. With control of her heart rhythm and support from the LVAD, Heather’s doctors hoped that her heart function would recover and that she would not need a heart transplant.

Under the care of Jeffrey Teuteberg, MD, medical director of the UPMC Advanced Heart Failure Program, and his team, Heather’s heart function improved to normal over the course of the next three months. In February of 2013, she had her LVAD successfully removed and her heart function has remained normal ever since.

“I truly credit the entire artificial heart team for saving my life,” Heather said.

With her health, and her life, back, Heather and Cole adopted a baby girl named Maida in August 2013. Today, Heather is healthy and happy, raising her daughter and two dogs. She and her husband run a natural pet supply store in Shadyside.

The Penguins acquired forward Carl Hagelin from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for David Perron and Adam Clendening on Jan. 16. Hagelin had played 43 games with the Ducks after being traded there this past summer.

Prior to that, the 27-year-old Swede had spent the past four seasons with the New York Rangers. Here’s what Hagelin had to say heading into his Penguins debut on Jan. 17 vs. Carolina.

YOU’VE HAD MANY BATTLES AGAINST THE PENGUINS OVER THE YEARS. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE A PART OF THIS TEAM NOW? [Laughs] Yeah, it’s a little different obviously.

I know they’ve always been good games in this building, and it’s a good crowd and I’m excited to be here.

I’M SURE IT HELPS YOU KNOW A FEW GUYS, PATRIC HORNQVIST IN PARTICULAR. HE SAID HE TEXTED YOU RIGHT AFTER THE TRADE. WHAT DID HE SAY TO YOU? When I got traded he said, ‘It’s about time.’ He said it’s a great group of guys and a good coaching staff. We’re on the right track trying to move up in the standings.

BEING SO FAMILIAR WITH THIS TEAM, HOW DOES THAT HELP YOU GET ACCLIMATED RIGHT AWAY COMING HERE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SEASON? I definitely think that helps.

I’ve played in a lot of games in this building — a couple of playoff series — and you kind of know what to expect. Even though you don’t know the guys, you’ve played against them so many times, you kind of know their tendencies on the ice.

WHAT WAS YOUR RELATIONSHIP LIKE WITH PENGUINS HEAD COACH MIKE SULLIVAN IN NEW YORK WHEN HE WAS AN ASSISTANT COACH OF THE RANGERS? YOU SPENT TWO SEASONS WITH HIM THERE. I was a young guy that came up, and he was a really good coach. I didn’t play on the PP and he was the PP guy in New York, but at the same time he was there for me when I needed it and he obviously gave me some advice.

HOCKEY PLAYERS AT UPMC LEMIEUX SPORTS COMPLEX

The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry isn’t just the new practice rink of the Penguins. The young hockey players in Pittsburgh are the real owners of this first-class facility.

“Everybody thinks it’s just for the Penguins,” said Matt Herr, Executive Director of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. “But anyone can come here and sign up. You can come here and work with our staff. Then you can go into the weight room and train with Gary Roberts. Then maybe next year you can even play for Penguins Elite.”

The creation of the player pool for Penguins Elite, Western Pennsylvania’s premier AAA amateur hockey organization, also comes from the new facility with the Penguins Mite skating and skills program.

“The Mite development program is four to six-year-olds and then six to eight-year-olds,” Herr said. “And all those players can all play on Penguins Elite.”

The facility has so much more to offer in addition to the Mite Development League. They also have the Penguins Hockey School, which offers year-round leagues, camps and clinics.

Power skating clinics are run by Max Ivanov, a well-known power skating instructor and skill development coach who works with Evgeni Malkin. Ty Hennes, a former standout player for Boston College, leads the skills sessions. And goalie training for players of all levels are run by Mike Chiasson, a former QMJHL goalie with the Rimouski Oceanic who played four years at Acadia University in Nova Scotia. continued on page 95

All in all, the goal is to produce better hockey players.

According to Herr, the most important part of their development program is pushing kids to take their own path.

“We want these kids to be able to go on their own and be able to develop their own game while having fun,” Herr said. “You watch all the great players, the guys that are creative and can score.

“Half of Sidney Crosby’s skill is his thinking of the game. We want to encourage that with all of our players that come through here.”

Perhaps the best place for young hockey players to do that is at the GNC Skills Development Center inside the facility. Herr calls it the “Dave and Buster’s of hockey.” It features a RapidShot system referred to as “the batting cage for hockey players,” three RapidHands puck-handling training stations and a 60-foot resistance skating lane.

“Kids have their swipe card with $20.00 on it, and Mom can sit and drink a latte while reading her book in the lobby and the kid can stickhandle and shoot,” Herr said. “It’s a key component because our big theme is that we can work with you all you want but in the end, you have to take ownership of your development.”

THE RUSH Introduced in the mid 1990’s, the Pittsburgh Penguins Student Rush Program is one of the most popular and well known marketing initiatives of the team. Designed to sell remaining game day inventory, the Student Rush program provides the Pittsburgh Penguins an opportunity to introduce new fans to the game of hockey at a discounted rate.

With many past Student Rush participants now attending games as Pittsburgh Penguins Season Ticket Holders, the program has been successful in developing a long-term relationship with young, active Pittsburghers.

During the 2015-16 season, an estimated 200 Student Rush tickets will be made available for each regular season home game at CONSOL Energy Center. PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 41th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network.

Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001.

Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since.

Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07.

A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK COLOR ANALYST

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 13th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange.

A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa.

Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

Josh is in his first season as a radio broadcast host and PensTV host with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He joins the Penguins after spending the previous two years as the Sports Director for FOX Champaign in Champaign, Illinois. While in Champaign, Josh covered the University of Illinois and Big Ten athletics, local high school athletics, and various professional teams in the region. In June of 2015, Josh was named the Television Sportscaster of the Year by the Illinois Broadcasters Association.

In addition to his time in Illinois, Josh has also worked as a sports anchor/ reporter at WENY-TV and radio update anchor at 1410 WELM ESPN Radio in Elmira, New York, and served as a member of the on-site production team during NBC’s coverage of Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia. He is a graduate of Ithaca College’s Roy H. Park School of Communications in Ithaca, New York.

Heads UP Pittsburgh is a first of its kind program that has served as the blueprint for other NHL and professional sports organizations since KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE its creation in 2010.

Heads UP Pittsburgh is a partnership with UPMC Sports Medicine and funded by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. The purpose of the program is to reduce the amount of concussions in youth sports by providing free baseline concussion testing to young athletes, developing educational initiatives for athletes, parents, coaches, officials, teachers and pediatricians and finally support research projects.

The results are quite impressive, since 2011 the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine have been able to: Baseline tests over 17,000 athletes, ages seven to 14 in 30 different sports Our staffs have educated over 45,000 people about concussions and sports related injuries 50,000 educational brochures were distributed at baseline test sites, pediatrician offices, schools and local rinks The Foundation funded over 4,000 neck strengthening kits with protocols to develop neck strength in young players From the neck strengthening program 500+ athletes became involved in a concussion research project Addressing other sport injuries the Foundation provided 3,000 free Duraband flexibility kits Next year we will introduce a new pediatric version of the baseline test targeted at seven to nine year-old players.

DALEY GETTING

COMFORTABLE IN PITTSBURGH By: CJ Harvey

When Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford acquired Trevor Daley from Chicago in exchange for Rob Scuderi on Dec. 14, the defenseman was in his first season with the Blackhawks after spending his first 11 years in the NHL with the Dallas Stars.

“Leaving Dallas was tough after being there for so long,” Daley said. “The second move from Chicago to here [Pittsburgh] was much easier than leaving Dallas. We weren’t in Chicago very long, and I personally wanted another opportunity. So the move coming here was really simple.

“Obviously the concern was to get my family settled, but we’re happy now. It’s common nature for us because we’ve been doing it for so long.”

Aside from his rookie year, Daley had never been considered the ‘new guy.’ This season, Daley has already been the ‘new guy’ twice. And while he admitted it was foreign territory, it’s nothing he hasn’t already seen in his long pro career.

“It was all right being the new guy,” Daley joked. “I’ve been around for a while. It wasn’t long before the ‘new guy’ thing wore off pretty quick. The guys started getting on me about it, which was good because it made me feel welcome.” continued on page 131

It’s only been a small sample size of time in Pittsburgh, but Daley already has some fond Pittsburgh memories — including the time he gets to share with his son, Trevor Jr. “My son gets to be in a great situation,” Daley said. “The people that he gets to surround himself with is pretty special.

“He got a chance to hang out with Mario Lemieux, and he was talking about how he wasn’t sure who Lemieux was, but he sees the name everywhere so he knows he’s important. I’ve been trying to explain how special of a player Mario was, but it’s hard trying to explain that to a six-year-old. It goes in one ear and out the other. But it’s pretty cool to be able to see my son have those experiences.”

Now Daley has become a middleman of sorts. He’s no longer the newest acquisition. That distinction goes to forward Carl Hagelin, who was brought in just a month after the defenseman. But Daley has taken time to show Hagelin the ropes of their new team.

“He’s been great,” Hagelin noted about Daley. “He and I actually sit together on the plane and he’s been great walking me through everything here in Pittsburgh.”

“There are no bad people in the hockey world,” Daley said.

“You ask around the league, and hockey people always have good things to say. I’ve been in one locker room for so long, I always wondered what it was like to go to a new dressing room, and so continued on page 132

far the transition has been great. The day I got here was the day I got 23 new friends.”

The 5-foot-11, 195-pound blueliner had the best offensive year of his career last season in Dallas, tallying 16 goals, 22 assists and 38 points in 68 contests. His goal, assist and point totals were all career highs. He also had a career-best six power-play goals.

Daley’s 16 goals last season ranked fifth among all NHL blueliners, trailing only Oliver Ekman-Larsson (23), Erik Karlsson (21), Dustin Byfuglien (18) and Brent Burns (17).

After his first change of scenery, Daley tallied six assists in his 29 games with Chicago but was held goalless. He wasn’t playing in a big role with the Blackhawks this year and wanted a change.

“I did ask them if they weren’t going to use me to move me. They were great about it,” Daley said. “I have nothing bad to say about my time in Chicago. I met a lot of good people. It’s a great franchise.

I wish I could say I hated it and wanted to leave, but I can’t. It’s hard, but I have more to give than they allowed me to do.”

And the defenseman has since begun to rediscover his offensive touch in Pittsburgh, as he scored his first tally of the year in just his second game with the Penguins and had seven points (4G-3A) in 19 appearances heading into the All-Star break.

At 32, Daley is fighting the uphill battle of age, but hopefully can continue his success at both ends of the rink in the Steel City.

HAGELIN SET TO FACE OLD TEAMS By: Dave Uhrmacher

Speedy winger Carl Hagelin has played for three teams in his short five-year career.

Following a successful junior career in his native Sweden and four years at the University of Michigan, Hagelin’s NHL career began on Broadway.

After four seasons in New York playing for the Rangers, Hagelin packed his bags for Anaheim in the summer of 2015.

This week, the Pittsburgh Penguins, Hagelin’s newest team, will face off against both of his former squads, the Rangers and the Ducks, in a pair of home games at CONSOL Energy Center.

Hagelin, a 27-year-old left winger, has excelled in a short period of time since coming over in a trade from Anaheim in exchange for forward David Perron and defenseman Adam Clendening on Jan. 16.

As of Feb. 1, Hagelin was just five games into his Penguins’ career and had established a career-long four game assist streak.

The skills Hagelin brings to the table with his speed, namely getting in open spots and winning races to gain advantages in puck battles, have blended well with what new linemates Evgeni Malkin and Phil Kessel offer.

Kessel’s straight-line speed combined with Hagelin’s gamebreaking footspeed have already resulted in multiple odd-man rushes, some of which have resulted in goals. continued on page 144

“It’s pretty easy playing with them,” Hagelin said when asked about playing with Malkin and Kessel. “I just try to create space for them using my speed.”

For Hagelin, the All-Star Break served as a nice period of time to finally get comfortable in his new surroundings, following a stretch with four games in the six days leading up to the break.

“It’s crazy,” Hagelin said. “I got a call at 11:30PM and being told you’ve been traded, it is never a fun thing. But you start figuring out things that are happening here and looking at a new opportunity and new chapter in your life.

“That’s the kind of guy I am, I try to stay positive at all times.

Obviously, I ended up here in a great organization with a great opportunity.”

If Hagelin can continue to create chemistry with Malkin and Kessel, the Penguins second line may look the same for a long time.

Hagelin is signed through 2018-19. Kessel and Malkin both are signed through 2021-22.

“I am feeling the way I want to feel right now,” Hagelin said in his introductory press conference. “I want to produce as much as possible and I want to just use my speed, create turnovers and get those guys the puck.”

Five games in to Hagelin’s Pittsburgh career? Three goals for Kessel. Four goals for Malkin.

Coaches have long dealt with the grind that is the NHL schedule by compartmentalizing it, by zeroing in on performance in back-to-back games or over the course of an extended road trip or a 10-game segment or what have you.

Mike Sullivan is no different.

He used the games the Penguins had leading up to the All-Star festivities in Nashville as something of a postseason dress rehearsal in an effort to motivate his team to extract every possible point prior to the break.

“I think we had eight games in a 15-day stretch, or whatever it was,” Sullivan explained. “We talked about that particular aspect of our schedule in a capsule, almost like a playoff series.”

It wound up being seven games in 15 days, from Jan. 12 at Carolina through Jan. 26 against New Jersey, due to the Penguins’ Jan. 24 game at Washington being postponed by snow.

In other words, exactly like a playoff series that goes the distance.

For the Penguins, their postseason dry run proved to be productive, encouraging and revealing in terms of how such games must be approached come playoff time when, hopefully, actual series will be played:

GAME ONE JAN. 12, @ CAROLINA The Penguins battled back from a 2-0 deficit with goals from Kris Letang in the second period and Chris Kunitz in the third. But a penalty against Evgeni Malkin left the Penguins vulnerable in overtime and Carolina’s Jeff Skinner ended it at 3:02 of the extra session (3-2 bad guys). GAME TWO JAN. 15, @ TAMPA BAY More third-period heroics from Trevor Daley and Kunitz turned a 3-2 deficit into a 4-3 lead. But the Penguins surrendered the tying goal just 1:33 after taking the lead and eventually lost in OT again (5-4). Through two games the Penguins were on their way to taking the long way to a quick exit.

GAME THREE JAN. 17, CAROLINA No such worries this time. Olli Maatta scored just 3:54 into the game and the Penguins poured it on from there in a 5-0 blowout. The Penguins got a couple of goals from Sidney Crosby, allowed just 22 shots and snuffed all three Hurricanes power-play opportunities. That’s more like it.

GAME FOUR JAN. 18, @ ST. LOUIS The Penguins dominated the second period but had no response for the Blues’ push back in the third, and a 2-2 tie through 40 minutes degenerated into a 5-2 loss.

The Penguins’ third setback in four games pushed them to the brink of elimination.

GAME FIVE JAN. 21, PHILADELPHIA New life! A spectacular goal by Crosby was one of four in succession generated by the Penguins after falling into a 2-0 hole. GAME SIX JAN. 23, VANCOUVER The Penguins continued to play with fire by falling behind 2-0 for the second consecutive game and for the third time in six games. But the second of Malkin’s two third-period goals completed a hat trick and tied things up at 3-3 at 10:22 of the third. Brian Rust un-tied it 2:38 later and Crosby’s empty-netter effectively decided what eventually went into the books as a 5-4, series-evening triumph.

GAME SEVEN JAN. 26, NEW JERSEY Another shutout from Marc-Andre Fleury allowed the Penguins to finally seal the deal. Crosby got the only goal the Penguins would need — his fifth in the seven-game stretch — and Phil Kessel provided breathing room at 15:21 of the second. A shutout of the Devils to wrap up a seven-game series in which the Penguins had to come from behind; they’d seen that fish before (on April 15, 1991, to be exact, when Frank Pietrangelo turned aside 27 of 27 shots along the way to eliminating New Jersey, 4-0).

Officially, the Penguins emerged from the seven games having gone 4-1-2 rather than 4-3.

Sullivan was neither quibbling nor complaining.

He’d made his point and his players had earned enough along the way.

“I think we’re making progress,” he assessed. “We’re starting to get some results. We had 14 potential points. We end up getting 10 out of 14.

“Pretty good body of work.”

HOCKEY SCHOLAR NEIL ARMSTRONG MIDDLE SCHOOL Bethel Park School District has committed to creating opportunities for students to develop 21st century technology skills.

As part of this commitment, the Penguins’ Future Goals – Hockey Scholar program was introduced to Mr. Rosi’s fifth grade class at Neil Armstrong Middle School.

“All of our students have some sort of familiar tie to the Penguins,so bringing this program into the classroom brought instant interest to the topics,” said Mr. Rosi.

Hockey Scholar is a digital resource that provides students an opportunity to experience different aspects of the game while immersing themselves in problem solving situations involving engineering, math and science. MEET THE PENGUINS 2015

DRAFT CLASS DANIEL SPRONG

Forward • 2nd round, 46th overall Sprong, who was ranked 20th among North American skaters heading into the 2015 NHL Draft by Central Registry, paced the Charlottetown Islanders of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in goals (39), assists (49) and points (88) for the second straight season in 2014-15. The previous year, Sprong finished second among QMJHL rookies with 68 points (30G-38A-68P) in 67 games en route to being named to the League’s All-Rookie Team.

BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Sprong was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands where his father, Hannie, played professional hockey in Holland in the early 1990s. Daniel, who models parts of his game after Ilya Kovalchuk (particularly his shot), has become the first Dutch-born NHL player since Ed Kea. He is a Yankees fan in baseball, Patriots fan in football (though he laughed he may need to change that) and a Cleveland Cavaliers fan in basketball.

DOMINIK SIMON

Forward • 5th round, 137th overall Simon has played his entire career in the Czech Republic League. He played the 2014-15 season for HC Plzen, a team owned by former Penguins player Martin Straka, and finished tied for third on the team with 30 points (18G-12A) in 52 games. continued on page 191

BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Simon, the youngest player on the Czech team at the 2015 World Championship, was paired on a line with the team’s most senior member, former Penguin Jaromir Jagr — and the two combined for a goal against France. Simon finished that tournament with six points (1G-5A) in 10 games.

Simon also helped his country top Canada at the 2014 World Junior Championship with the game-deciding shootout goal.

He has become a Pirates fan since coming to North America.

FREDERICK TIFFELS

Forward • 6th round, 167th overall In 2014-15 Tiffels posted nine goals and 19 points in his freshman season with Western Michigan under Andy Murray, who previously served as the head coach of the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings (1999-2006) and the St. Louis Blues (2006-10). Before joining the Broncos, Tiffels also played one season in the USHL with Cedar Rapids, Fargo and Muskegon.

BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Tiffels is a native of Cologne, Germany and he represented his country in the 2014 and ’15 World Junior Championships. He came overseas to play hockey in the USHL and now college. Tiffels is a big soccer fan and follows his hometown club, FC Koln. His favorite player on the team is Lukas Podolski.

NIKITA PAVLYCHEV

Forward • 7th round, 197th overalll Pavlychev, a native of Yaroslavl, Russia, posted 16 points (6G-10A) and 80 penalty minutes in 42 games with Des Moines of the USHL in 2014-15. He has incredible size for a forward at 6-foot-7 and 200 pounds.

BEYOND THE NUMBERS: Pavlychev cut his hockey teeth in Pennsylvania with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights, a junior team, then in the Atlantic Junior Hockey League, alongside fellow draft pick Daniel Sprong. Pavlychev has committed to play collegiate hockey this season for Penn State University.

BUILDING INFORMATION ALCOHOL Guests of CONSOL Energy Center must be 21 years of age or older to purchase and/or consume alcoholic beverages. ARAMARK reserves the right to check proof of legal drinking age. There is a maximum of TWO (2) alcoholic beverages per purchase at all concession stands and portable vendors. For Pittsburgh Penguins games, all alcohol sales within the arena will conclude at the beginning of the third period. Individual concerts and events are determined on a show-by-show basis.

BAGS, BACKPACKS AND PURSES For security purposes, only small personal bags (purses, baby or diaper bags, etc.) will be permitted inside CONSOL Energy Center and all items are subject to search upon entrance.

Large bags, coolers, backpacks and sealed packages, including gifts for performers and/or athletes of any kind are not permitted unless otherwise noted on the individual event page.

BANNERS AND SIGNS Banners and signs are permitted for most events, providing they are appropriate, as deemed by building management. Signs must not be commercial in nature or utilize wood, metal or other types of objects for support. They cannot be hung or fastened anywhere in the building or in any way obstruct another guest’s view or building signage.

AUTOMOTIVE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM AAA will have a “Puck Truck” at all Penguins home games. The “Puck Truck” is available to assist patrons that have trouble with their vehicles in CONSOL Energy Center lots only. Fans can call 1.800.AAA.HELP after the start of the third period.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION In the event of an emergency, CONSOL Energy Center staff will utilize the public address (PA) system

to inform guests of the situation and any instructions as applicable. All exits and emergency exits are posted with appropriate signage.

ENTRANCES AND EXITS There are four (4) points of entry into CONSOL Energy Center: Peoples Gate (Fifth Avenue and Washington Place), Trib Total Media Gate (Centre Avenue Lower Entrance), Verizon Gate (Centre Avenue Upper Entrance), and a private parking garage entrance for suite ticket holders.

FAMILY RESTROOMS Family restrooms are available on all levels of CONSOL Energy Center near sections 106/107, 108, 115, 121, 213, 225, party suite 44 and suite 13.

FIRST AID There are two (2) First Aid Stations presented by UPMC, one on each level of CONSOL Energy Center. First Aid is located adjacent to the Guest Services office outside section 104 and behind the concession stand at section 232.

FOOD AND BEVERAGES No food or beverages of any kind are permitted to be brought into CONSOL Energy Center. Concession stands located throughout the arena sell a wide variety of food, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. In 2012, the Pittsburgh Riverside Park Oakmont Penguins Foundation and Settler’s Cabin Park Oakdale Highmark created Project South Park Community Park South Park Power Play, to provide athletes with a multipurpose surface to enjoy dek hockey and other sports. Each rink received a dasher board system, scoreboard, player benches, metal shelters, a penalty box, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment.

Through your support of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation events we continue to grow our programs dealing with physical well-being for the young people of our region.
