THE SERIES

Tonight the Penguins host the Dallas Stars, who are making their first appearance in Pittsburgh in more than two years and just their second appearance at CONSOL Energy Center. The last time the Stars played here, back on Nov. 11, 2011, former Dallas forward James Neal scored twice to erase an early Stars’ lead and Matt Cooke added a penalty shot in a 3-1 Penguins’ victory. . . Pittsburgh is 7-2-0 in its last nine games against Dallas, which earned a 3-0 home victory over the Penguins on Jan. 25.

Kari Lehtonen stopped 24 shots for the shutout while former Penguin Sergei Gonchar, Jamie Benn and Rich Peverley scored against Marc-Andre Fleury. . . Former Pittsburgh defenseman Alex Goligoski, who went to Dallas in the trade that brought Neal and Matt Niskanen to the Penguins, also had an assist in that January game. . . The Stars have scored first in each of their last four games against Pittsburgh. . . The Penguins have won five straight home games against the Stars, outscoring them, 20-7. The Stars’ last win here came at Mellon Arena on Dec. 23, 2000, when Dallas ripped off six unanswered goals on the way to an 8-2 victory. Brett Hull had two goals and one assist, Mike Modano and Joe Nieuwendyk a goal and two assists each and former Penguin Sergei Zubov two assists in that game. . . The Penguins’ longest home winning streak against the North Stars/Stars franchise was seven games from March 6, 1976 through Feb. 15, 1979. . . Pittsburgh plays in Detroit on Thursday night, then begins a four-game homestand against Tampa Bay here Saturday afternoon . The Penguins will then host St . Louis on Sunday afternoon, Phoenix one week from tonight and Los Angeles on March 27 . . . The Penguins had lost a league-low six games at home this season, including just four in regulation, after a 2-0 shutout victory over Washington one week ago tonight .

Fleury made 32 saves for his 28th career shutout and fifth shutout this season, one shy of NHL leader Tuukka Rask of Boston at that point. . . That victory helped the Penguins earn their first sweep of a home-and-home series against Washington since 1995 . Pittsburgh had claimed a 3-2 victory in Washington the night before behind a goal and two assists from Sidney Crosby . . . Lee Stempniak had three assists in his last two games before the Penguins faced Philadelphia in a home-and-home set last weekend, beginning with a road game Saturday afternoon and a home game Sunday afternoon . . . Beau Bennett, who had hand surgery after leaving the Penguins’ lineup back in late November, returned to practice last week . . . Chris Conner was continued on page 8

Dallas’ forward Rich Peverley was released from the hospital after collapsing on the bench last week during a game with Columbus. Peverley will undergo a season-ending procedure for his irregular heartbeat in the near future. . . Through play last Tuesday, the Stars were holding down the final playoff spot in the Western Conference after earning points in 13 of their last 16 games (11-3-2). . .

Tim Thomas, acquired at the deadline, made his Dallas debut in a 4-3 victory over Minnesota on March 8. . . Another former Bruin, Tyler Seguin, was fifth in the NHL scoring race with 67 points after a 3-2 overtime win in St. Louis on March 11. . . Goligoski was third on the team in scoring with five goals and 31 points at that juncture. That was six shy of the career-high 37 points he put up with the Penguins in 2009-10.

A GRAND NIGHT: Minnesota’s Matt Cooke celebrated the 1,000th game of his NHL career last Wednesday, becoming the 286th player in league history to reach four figures in appearances .

Cooke took the ice against Edmonton with 162 goals, 222 assists, 384 points, 2,013 hits,1,120 penalty minutes and a plus/minus rating of plus 61 to show for his first 999 games . He was 10th among active players in hits, 13th in penalty minutes and 28th in games played .

Cooke is in his 15th NHL season and made previous stops in Vancouver, Washington and Pittsburgh .

ASSIST CONSISTENCY: Alex Goligoski of Dallas had a two-assist night on Jan . 30 against New Jersey, which upped his total on the season to 20 helpers and made Goligoski one of five current blueliners to have at least 20 assists in five consecutive seasons, Goligoski joined Duncan Keith of Chicago, Ryan Suter of Nashville, Kimmo Timonen of Philadelphia and Keith Yandle of Phoenix in that category .

MILESTONE ‘W’: The Blues’ 3-2 shootout win on March 9 at Minnesota was the 649th in head coach Ken Hitchcock’s career . Hitchcock passed Ron Wilson (648) for sole possession of seventh place on the all-time NHL list .

30 AND COUNTING: Colorado goaltender Semyon Varlamov’s 3-2 win over Winnipeg on March 10 was his career-high 32nd of the season . Varlamov is the fifth goaltender in franchise history to surpass 30 wins in a campaign, joining Patrick Roy (seven times, 1996-97 through 2002-03), David Aebischer (2003-04), Peter Budaj (2006-07) and Craig Anderson (2009-10) .

Varlamov went 11-0-5 from Dec . 12 to Jan . 18, which equaled the longest streak without a regulation loss (16 games) in franchise history .

CLOSING THEM OUT: The Kings improved to 126-1-11 in their last 138 games when leading after two periods with a 3-2 win over the Flames on March 10 .

COMMUNITY UPDATE SKATE WITH THE GREATS PRESENTED BY 84 LUMBER COMES TO CONSOL ENERGY CENTER BY: KRISTEN MANCHOR

We’re all accustomed to seeing the CONSOL Energy Center filled with fast paced hockey and top-notch fans, but how about seeing those fans down on the ice?

Supporters had a chance to share the ice with Penguins Alumni members during the third annual Penguins Alumni Skate with the Greats presented by 84 Lumber on January 13 . Fans also had the opportunity to take part in two autograph sessions and purchase mystery autographed pucks sold by the alumni wives .

That evening, 600 fans enjoyed the opportunity to skate on the same ice the Pittsburgh Penguins call home . Penguins’ Director of Community and Alumni Relations Cindy Himes said, “It’s the first time we’ve ever held this event at CONSOL Energy Center and the fans seem to be having a blast!”

Alumni in attendance included Mark Recchi, Bryan Trottier, Jay Caufield, Troy Loney, Warren Young , Kim Clackson, Randy Hillier, Mark Kachowski, Ed Johnston, Phil Bourque, Duane Rupp, Pierre Larouche, Francois Leroux, Peter Taglianetti, Greg Malone, Dave Hannan, and honorary Penguins alumnus Dave Hanson . It’s great that all the alumni come back and we get to see each other .

Then we get to hang out with the Penguins fans, sign some autographs, and we go out and skate around a bit,” said Mark Recchi, member of the Penguins 1991 Stanley Cup Champion team .

With more than $21,000 grossed for Penguins Alumni Charities, specifically breast cancer research, this year’s event could definitely be classified as a huge success!

In addition to Skate with the Greats, the Penguins Alumni Association holds annual fundraisers including an Alumni Charity Golf Classic and a Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament . Over the past four years, the Penguins Alumni Association has donated over $208,000 to local charities .

It’s safe to say that both fans and alumni had a great time at this year’s skate . From skating on CONSOL Energy Center ice to autographs galore, the third annual Skate with the Greats presented by 84 Lumber will be an event to remember for many years .

The Penguins Alumni Association would like to thank the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation for its help in organizing the event, their spouses for selling mystery pucks, and especially the fans who made Skate with the Greats presented by 84 Lumber a huge success!

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 15th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including seven straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past six years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009.

Known as Le Magnifique, Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups.

A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033).

After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era.

In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 15th season as co-owner of the Penguins.

He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports.

Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for six-plus seasons.

Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less.

Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/ Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award.

DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT

David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Penguins, overseeing every aspect of the team’s operations.

Since Morehouse was named President in April, 2007, the Penguins have reshaped their image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology.

He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010. He reports directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle.

An emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.based NHL, NBA and MLB teams in local television ratings during the 2012-13 season. The Penguins’ rating of 12.66 was the highest achieved by any U.S.-based NHL, NBA or MLB team on a regional sports network since 2002. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins led all U.S.-based NHL teams in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales.

Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of the organization’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids ages 5-7 each year.

The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns.

He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights.

Ray Shero has established himself as one of the premiere NHL general managers during his tenure with the Penguins.

Shero, an active member with USA Hockey and a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group, will serve as associate general manager for Team USA at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Shero, who is in his eighth season as Pittsburgh’s GM, has transformed a franchise that missed the playoffs from 2002-06 into a perennial championship contender, including two Stanley Cup Final appearances and a Cup title in 2009.

Shero, who was named general manager of the Penguins in May, 2006, arrived with a firm, forward-thinking managerial style that incorporates cutting-edge methods of technology, player relations, prospect development and salary cap management.

Shero cut his administrative teeth during 14 seasons as an assistant general manager with the Nashville Predators (1998-06) and Ottawa Senators (1993-98).

Shero, a native of St. Paul, Minn., was raised in a hockey family filled with tradition. His father, Hall of Famer Fred Shero, played for the NY Rangers (1947-50) and coached the Philadelphia Flyers for seven seasons. Fred and Ray Shero are one of the few father-son tandems to have their names on the Cup. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. He twice led the team in scoring and was named team captain on two occasions. He graduated in 1984 as one of the top-10 scorers in school history.

Shero, who was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1982 NHL Draft, spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office.

Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

JASON BOTTERILL ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER

Jason Botterill is in his fifth full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position in May, 2009, by GM Ray Shero.

As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockeyrelated matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top minor-league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton of the American Hockey League.

Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 37, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins; his responsibilities included salary cap management, professional and amateur scouting and overseeing prospect development. His avant-garde approach and understanding of the salary cap has been a major asset for the Penguins.

Before joining the Pittsburgh organization, Botterill worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars.

Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in the 1994 NHL Draft and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. He also played 393 career games in the AHL and IHL, recording 127 goals and 257 points.

A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, ‘95 and ‘96 and won gold medals in all three tournaments.

Following his playing career, he returned to the University of Michigan to earn his MBA. Jason and his wife, Andrea, and their daughter, Alisa, reside in Pittsburgh.

DAN BYLSMA HEAD COACH

Dan Bylsma is already one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history, leading the team to a Stanley Cup championship, winning the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s Most Outstanding Coach, and an Atlantic Division title in just four-plus seasons behind the bench.

The Grand Haven, Mich. native will be Team USA’s head coach at the 2014 Winter Olympics Games in Sochi, Russia.

Bylsma has the best regular-season winning percentage (.669) in team history with an all-time record of 201-93-25. His 201 wins are the second most in team history (Eddie Johnston, 232).

In 2008-09, Bylsma penned one of the most remarkable starts to a head coaching career in NHL history. He began the season in his first head coaching job, with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League, and finished the year by raising the Stanley Cup. Bylsma was promoted to Pittsburgh on Feb. 15, 2009, inspiring an 18-3-4 run in the final 25 games to climb from 10th to fourth place and home-ice advantage in the opening round.

Bylsma joined the Penguins organization as assistant coach with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in 2006. Two seasons later he was promoted to WBS head coach in 2008-09. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-04. He was a member of Anaheim’s 2003 Western Conference championship team.

Bylsma played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green.

TONY GRANATO ASSISTANT COACH

Tony Granato is in his fifth season on the Penguins coaching staff.

Granato will also serve as assistant coach under head coach Dan Bylsma for Team USA at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.

Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato, 48, spent six seasons with the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach (2002-04 and 2008-09). Granato led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003.

Granato played 13 NHL seasons with the NY Rangers (1988-90), Los Angeles (90-96) and San Jose (96-01). In 1997, he played in the NHL All-Star Game and was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.

Granato played four seasons at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgers’ Hall of Fame in 2000. He also played for the U.S. National Team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary.

Tony and his wife, Linda, are the parents of four children and reside in the South Hills.

TODD REIRDEN ASSISTANT COACH

Todd Reirden is in his fourth season as an assistant coach with the Penguins.

Reirden, 41, joined the Penguins organization August 18, 2008 as an assistant coach in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. He was promoted to head coach following Dan Bylsma’s promotion to Pittsburgh. Reirden then joined Pittsburgh’s extended playoff coaching staff and helped the team win the Stanley Cup. In his only full season as head coach in WBS in 2009-10, Reirden led the team to a 41-34-2-3 mark and a playoff berth.

Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with his alma mater — the Bowling Green Falcons.

Reirden played 13 professional seasons, appearing in 183 NHL games with Edmonton, St. Louis, Atlanta and Phoenix.

Todd and his wife, Shelby, have one son, Travis, and reside in the North Hills.

JACQUES MARTIN ASSISTANT COACH

Jacques Martin is in his first season on the Penguins coaching staff.

Martin, 61, has spent nearly 30 years coaching at the NHL level, serving as head coach with St. Louis (1986-88), Ottawa (1995-2004), Florida (2005-08) and Montreal (2009-12) and as an assistant coach with Chicago (1988-90) and Quebec/Colorado (1990-95).

Martin was an associate coach on the 2002 Canadian Olympic squad that won a gold medal in Salt Lake City.

Martin was a Jack Adams Award recipient as NHL Coach of the Year with Ottawa in 1998-99, and was a finalist on three other occasions.

Also as head coach of the Florida Panthers, Martin worked a dual role as general manager from 2006-08.

Martin’s NHL head coaching resume includes 1,294 games, 613 wins and 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons. He ranks 10th all-time in wins and seventh all-time in games coached in NHL history.

Martin played college hockey at St. Lawrence University.

Jacques has two daughters.

MIKE BALES GOALTENDING COACH

Mike Bales is in his first season as Pittsburgh’s goaltending coach after serving the previous two seasons as the club’s goaltender development coach.

Under Bale’s tutelage during the 2012-13 season, goaltenders Jeff Zatkoff and Brad Thiessen of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins combined to allow the fewest goals (178) in the American Hockey League (AHL). Zatkoff’s 1.93 goals-against average was the lowest in the AHL. Bales, who hails from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the National Hockey League with Boston and Ottawa.

Bales, who was originally drafted by Boston in the fifth round of the 1990 NHL Draft, also saw action in the American Hockey League, the International Hockey League, Germany, Sweden and Northern Ireland.

Bales played three collegiate seasons with Ohio State University from 1989-92.

Mike and his wife, Melanie, have three children, William, Alexander and Alexa.

TRAVIS WILLIAMS CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

Travis Williams is in his third season as Chief Operating Officer of the Penguins, overseeing finance, legal affairs, technology, business development and arena operations while reporting directly to CEO/President David Morehouse.

Williams joined the Penguins in 2008 as Senior Vice President of Business Affairs/General Counsel and oversaw the construction and development of CONSOL Energy Center — bringing the project to completion on time and under budget. He is the organization’s liaison with building manager AEG Facilities and works closely with AEG on all arena-related events and initiatives.

Williams also is the Penguins’ point man on the development of the former Civic Arena site and the construction of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry.

Previously, he had been a partner at Reed Smith LLP. Williams graduated from Penn State University and received a Juris Doctorate from Duquesne University, summa cum laude. He lives in Nevillewood with his wife, Nichole, and six children.

DAVID PEART SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT, SALES

David Peart is in his third full season as Senior Vice President of Sales and Service, overseeing all local revenue generating departments for the team including business partnerships, corporate sales, premium seating, ticket sales, broadcasting, and concession and merchandise sales strategy.

Under his direction, the Penguins created the team’s Founding Partner Program at CONSOL Energy Center and launched one of the most comprehensive fan engagement initiatives in sports helping, the team to be consistently ranked among the top sports teams in Fan Relations, according to ESPN the Magazine.

Peart has a wide range of sports management experience, having held senior-level positions with the San Francisco 49ers, Houston Texans, Dallas Stars and Texas Rangers. The Kennedy Township native is a graduate of Point Park University, where he is a member of the Board of Trustees. He and his wife, Julie, have two children.

The first-ever episode of In The Room in 2011 chronicled Sidney Crosby’s return to the lineup after missing more than 60 games due to injury. The show’s staff followed Evgeni Malkin to Russia to witness his off-season workouts in his home country, and documented a unique oneon-one workout session between coach Bylsma and Kris Letang.

Season Two showcased the dedication and human side of a hockey player. Joe Vitale said goodbye to his wife and kids before a road trip, and two former NHL captains, Jarome Iginla and Brenden Morrow, said goodbye to their old teams as Ray Shero acquired them prior to the trade deadline. Chatter on the bench between James Neal and Malkin during a game highlighted their unique relationship, and the highs and lows of a long postseason run were revealed.

The current season began with a trip to West Point. Lessons in leadership, teamwork and sacrifice were stressed — ideals that the 2013-14 Penguins would build upon. The players carried a rock to the top of a mountain — and that rock is handed out after continued on page 66

BUILDING INFORMATION ALCOHOL Guests of CONSOL Energy Center must be 21 years of age or older to purchase and/or consume alcoholic beverages. BAGS, BACKPACKS AND PURSES For security purposes, only small personal bags (purses, baby or diaper bags, etc.) will be permitted inside CONSOL Energy Center and all items are subject to search upon entrance.

Large bags, coolers, backpacks and sealed packages, including gifts for performers and/or athletes of any kind are not permitted unless otherwise noted on the individual event page.

BANNERS AND SIGNS Banners and signs are permitted for most events, providing they are appropriate, as deemed by building management. Signs must not be commercial in nature or utilize wood, metal or other types of objects for support. They cannot be hung or fastened anywhere in the building or in any way obstruct another guest’s view or building signage.

DOORS OPEN Doors generally open one (1) hour prior to the start of an event at CONSOL Energy Center, including Pittsburgh Penguins games. Please check the individual event page for further information. CONSOL Energy Center has a no re-entry policy; once you leave the building during an event, you will not be permitted to return.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION In the event of an emergency, CONSOL Energy Center staff will utilize the public address (PA) system

FAMILY RESTROOMS Family restrooms are available on all levels of CONSOL Energy Center near sections 106/107, 108, 115, 121, 213, 225, party suite 44 and suite 13.

FIRST AID There are two (2) UPMC First Aid Stations, one on each level of CONSOL Energy Center. UPMC First Aid is located adjacent to the Guest Services office outside section 104 and behind the concession stand at section 232.

FOOD AND BEVERAGES No food or beverages of any kind are permitted to be brought into CONSOL Energy Center. Concession stands located throughout the arena sell a wide variety of food, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. ELITE TRYOUTS

The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite are holding tryouts for the 2014-15 seasons within the next month for all 13 teams.

These teams include eight boys’ teams and five girls’ teams. Age groups for the boys’ teams range from 2005 birth years all the way up to U18s. The age groups for the girls’ teams are U10, U12, U14, U16 and U19s.

In only two seasons, the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program has become one of the premier AAA organizations in the country. In its first year, PPE experienced a significant improvement in the national rankings (average increase of 14 spots). Improvement continued in the second year as PPE currently has six teams that are ranked in the top 15 nationally and 10 teams of the 13 teams are ranked in the top 25.

Through the involvement of the Pittsburgh Penguins, this organization has been able to add structure, helped to improve the quality of coaching and provide unique opportunities for participants.

Penguin’s alumni Dave Hannan, Troy Loney and Mark Recchi are all head coaching teams this upcoming season. Randy Hillier volunteers as a skill development and coached consultant. Bryan Trottier currently serves on the Board of Directors for the organization.

Registration is underway and we look forward to fielding very competitive teams this season to have even more successful seasons.

TIER 1 DISTRICT AND NATIONALS It is that time of year again as the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite teams are heading to the USA Hockey Mid-American District Championships in hopes of advancing to USA Hockey Tier 1 National Championships.

The Mid-American District championships will be held March 13-16 for all Tier 1 hockey programs. The boys’ teams will play in Columbus, Ohio, while the girls’ teams will play at Culver Military Academy in Indiana. All teams will compete for the opportunity to head to the National Championships.

The National Championships are to be held in two different locations for the boys’ and girls’ teams. For the boys, the games will be played in Green Bay, Wisconsin while the girls’ teams will play in Marlborough, Massachusetts. The Championship for each division will take place April 2-6. Very few youth hockey players get the opportunity to play in such an event and on behalf of the Pittsburgh Penguins, we wish all athletes heading to both Districts and Nationals the best of luck!

PENGUINS PROFILE:

Someday, for Finnish hockey, it may be all about Olli Maatta. That day may be closer than is readily evident.

But at the Sochi Olympics, it was all about Teemu Selanne.

Selanne, 43, is a Finnish hockey legend. When he talks, every Finn listens, let alone 19-year-olds like Maatta. Before Finland’s bronzemedal game against the United States, Selanne didn’t say much. But the content resonated with Maatta.

“We didn’t even meet with the coaches. It was just the players,” Maatta said. “Teemu told us, ‘Let’s get what we can. Let’s do it for us and our country.’ That motivated us a lot.”

Finland 5, United States 0. Finland gets bronze.

That victory wrapped up a whirlwind Olympics for Maatta, and continued a whirlwind season.

When Penguins training camp convened, Maatta was ticketed to play another season of Jr. A in London, Ontario. But he impressed well beyond expectations. Maatta made the Penguins, is a legit Calder Trophy (best rookie) candidate, and won a bronze medal alongside his boyhood hero at Sochi. Amazing stuff.

Selanne is Finland’s hockey deity, and is held in very high esteem by Maatta. continued on page 111

“He was my idol,” Maatta said. “It was definitely kind of surreal playing with him at the Olympics. I remember when he won the Stanley Cup [in 2007 with Anaheim]. I thought he’d be done after that. You’ve got to respect how much he loves the game of hockey.

“You would never believe he’s 43, the way he looks out there.

I never thought he’d still be skating like he does right now. And his leadership, on the ice and off the ice — it was needed by us younger guys.”

Maatta played against lots of fellow Penguins at Sochi: Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz with Canada, Evgeni Malkin with Russia, and Brooks Orpik with the United States. Penguins winger Jussi Jokinen joined Maatta on Finland.

When asked what it was like to play against Crosby and Malkin, Maatta said, “It wasn’t easy. We did a good job defending them.

But they’re really good players.”

Having practiced with Crosby, Malkin and the rest of the Penguins, Maatta was “a little [familiar]” with his Pittsburgh teammates when they were foes at Sochi: “I was aware of what they’re capable of. It was an advantage. But as I said, it wasn’t easy.”

Maatta never looks flustered. But, he says, looks can be deceiving.

“It’s good that it doesn’t look like [I’m nervous],” Maatta said.

“But in my head, sometimes I am nervous, or excited. I try not to look that way.”

Maatta’s lone low point at Sochi was Finland’s 2-1 semifinal loss to Sweden.

“It was a disappointment,” Maatta said. “I didn’t feel like we were the weaker team. I felt like we had a great chance of winning the game. But we didn’t play our best game. I don’t know what was wrong.”

Finland bounced back to rout the U.S. in the bronze-medal contest, scoring twice in 11 seconds to seize a 2-0 lead 1:38 into the second period. Selanne scored the first goal and would later score another. Jokinen got the second goal. Maatta netted a power-play goal in the third period to complete the scoring.

“I feel like we wanted it more,” Maatta said. “There’s big pride in getting an Olympic medal. I feel like we really wanted it.

“I’m really happy. I don’t think many [people] really believed we would win a medal there.”

Maatta had a solid tournament statistically. He had three goals and two assists in six games at Sochi. But he didn’t dwell on his point total.

“Four of those points came against Norway and Austria,” said Maatta, chuckling. Not exactly hockey powers, but Maatta got what he could.

GYMNASTICS LEGENDS DESCRIBE THRILL OF UPCOMING NATIONALS

When the 2014 P&G Gymnastics SPONSORED LOCALLY BY Championships come to Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center in August, there will be two special fans cheering on competitors in the four-day event.

Bela Karolyi, one of the world’s most successful gymnastics coaches, and Carly Patterson, 2004 All-Around Olympic Gold medalist, visited Pittsburgh to check out the venue and to talk about the significance of this event which is being held for the first time in Pittsburgh.

The 2014 P&G Gymnastics Championships, USA Gymnastics’ national championships, showcase the country’s best male and female gymnasts. It also will determine the U.S. champions and the U.S. national team for the junior and senior elite levels.

“Wow! What a beautiful arena,” Karolyi says of CONSOL Energy Center on his first visit to the venue. “What an excellent place to perform.”

Patterson agrees, “CONSOL Energy Center looks like a great place. I’m excited to be here.”

Karolyi says, “I’ll be here rooting and encouraging all of the participants to do their best.”

The long-time coach and influential figure in gymnastics, Karolyi now has snowy white hair, and his passion for gymnastics and his signature mustache are as vibrant as ever.

Making a round of Pittsburgh media to promote the upcoming P&G Gymnastics Championships, Karolyi talked about the significance of the championships, his career and the future, as well as the rich history of gymnastics.

“We could have a world changer here in Pittsburgh with the world medalists who will be here,” Karolyi says.

The standards of gymnastics are higher than ever before, according to Karolyi who says that people will not be able to imagine the spectacular athletic CARLY PATTERSON performances that they will see at the 2014 championships.

“It will be a great moment in Pittsburgh gymnastics,” he says, adding, “Who knows who will make history? There could be another Nadia [Comaneci] or Gabby [Douglas].”

“It will be inspiring,” he says.

“The P&G Gymnastics Championships are a unique opportunity to see the best in the world,” Karolyi says.

Patterson, who has experienced some great moments in gymnastics history herself, shares this view. “It’s an exciting time for the sport,” she says, pointing out that the 2014 championship will draw the likes of 2012 Olympic Team Gold Medalists Kyla Ross and McKayla Maroney, and Biles.

“It is the biggest competition of the year,” says Carly pointing out that the best gymnasts in the nation, juniors and seniors will come to Pittsburgh to compete for the country’s highest honors in the sport.

For local gymnasts and fans of the sport, Patterson says, “You’re lucky when it comes to your city. We will have the best in the United States, boys and girls, competing. It’s the chance to enjoy your sport firsthand and to see world class athletes in your backyard.” continued on page 134

She recalls watching championship performances when she was a young gymnast herself and says that it was inspiring and motivational to her to see high caliber gymnasts vying for top honors.

Besides designating gymnastics new national champions and recognizing the individuals’ years of work to hone their performances, Karolyi says, it is “the moment” that is the dream of many young athletes.

“Kids are working 8-10 years to get to the national championships.”

Karolyi says that for young gymnasts who dream of being champions, the JAKE DALTON impact of witnessing a live competition for national honors can impress and motivate them.

“It is the life-time chance to see athletes perform at this level,” he says.

“Thousands of kids will come and go home dreaming,” Karolyi says.

“Let’s embrace this competition and give kids the opportunity to get inspired. People will be glad that they did,” he says.

What attracts Karolyi to the sport of gymnastics? “It’s unique and beautiful,” he says.

Floor exercise is his favorite part of gymnastic competition. He calls it a showcase of athletic ability and strength combined with music, dance and expression. “It’s a beautiful combination” he says.

When she was competing, Patterson says, “Yes, beam was always my favorite event and to have a dismount named after me that is still one of the hardest dismounts you can do makes me really proud of that. My favorite part of competition now is just watching all the young talent getting better and better and doing so well. It is so nice to sit back and relax and enjoy my sport in a different light, especially knowing that I achieved my ultimate goal in gymnastics.”

Discussing what it takes to make a champion, Karolyi says, “The element of performance is needed in addition to the mental element, the drive, soul and feelings.” Mental strength, high difficulty performance and attitude are all necessary to success, he says.

Patterson says that excellence in gymnastics teaches and exacts “dedication, commitment and lots of hard work.”

Its lessons have relevance for her now as she pursues a college degree from Texas Women’s University and a career in public speaking.

On her rise to the top of the world of women’s gymnastics, Patterson laughs and says, “Looking at early videos, no one would have expected it.” continued on page 137

Known as one of the world’s most successful gymnastics coaches and a leader in the sport, Karolyi had a somewhat ironic career as a gymnast.

He has produced 28 Olympians, nine Olympic champions, 15 world champions, 12 European champions and six U.S. national champions and says that he struggled in the sport as an athlete in college.

“I thought who in the world created this crazy sport.” It was a required study in his physical education training. He says that he was almost “kicked out” of the university over the gymnastics test.

His wife Marta, herself a world renowned gymnastics coach, played a crucial role in his gymnastics career.

“I met a young lady. She was a great gymnast. We shared a dream together,” he says.

Of her gymnastics career, Patterson says, “It was just one of those things that was meant to be.”

She confirms that when she attended her cousin’s gymnastics-themed birthday party, “I fell in love with it. My cousin was not a gymnast. She just had her party there.” Laughing, Patterson adds, “She says that I owe her.”

Entering the sport at age six, Patterson became the top gymnast in the world in a decade.

As a Level 10 gymnast in 2000, she watched Elite gymnasts at a competition and says, “I knew then that I wanted to be like those girls. I knew that I had four SHAWN JOHNSON years to work my butt off to be ready.”

“In 2000 a lot happened. I went Elite from Level 10,” Patterson says. She also remembers dealing with her family’s move to another city and having to change gym’s which she says turned out to be a blessing.

“I had to keep an eye on the end goal, stay healthy and keep working,” she says.

In the 2003 World Championships, she won 2nd in the All-Around competition, and a year later, she became the U.S. National Co-Champion, and went on to be the first American woman to take the Olympic Gold for the All-Around in 20 years. continued on page 138

Patterson says that gymnasts have a “special connection” whether they are Olympians or beginners in their first year.

To all of the gymnasts who share the dream of being the best, Patterson says, “Gymnastics is such a great sport. Even if you don’t go to the Olympics or get a scholarship, it’s a great foundation, develops motor skills and teaches a lot about your body.”

She adds, “Be proud just to be a gymnast. You are doing something that not everyone can do.”

Asked about the future of the sport of gymnastics, Karolyi says, “There have been crucial moments in the history of gymnastics when I’ve thought ‘This is the most intense and highest performance of human capacity’.”

He cites as examples performances by Nadia Comaneci and Mary Lou Retton. Comaneci is the only gymnast to ever score perfect 10 in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal.

In 1984 at the Olympics in Los Angeles, the energetic and physical performance of Mary Lou Retton earned her the all-around gymnastics championship.

“The sport is ever developing in difficulty, the components, dance and music. I don’t believe there is a limit now,” Karolyi says.

JOHN OROZCO On this topic, Patterson says, “I have already seen the sport of gymnastics rise so much after the 2004 Olympics and it has been great to watch. I only see good things for the future and for our country to keep dominating like we have been!”

Citing Retton’s “lovely personality” and “fiery performance,” Karolyi says, “Mary Lou turned the page on gymnastics toward making it the nation’s number one sport.” He points out that women’s gymnastics is the most watched sport in the country.

Karolyi calls Retton, “Mary Lou, my sunshine of my coaching career.” He says that unlike some youngsters who were quiet and perhaps intimidated by his coaching style, Retton was bubbly and enthusiastic and enjoyed every second of training and competing.

Looking ahead to the next Olympic Games in 2016, Karolyi says, “We are going to try to make it. We will probably retire after 2016,” he says noting that he and his wife have been involved in the sport for some 50 years.

“We deserve to retire,” he says, and then after a moment’s pause he adds, “We will never stop contributing as much as we can.”

The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, scheduled to open in Cranberry in the summer of 2015, will feature two sheets of ice and serve as the Penguins’ official practice rink — but, as Penguins CEO David Morehouse said, “it will be much more than a hockey rink.”

The complex will be the first medical facility in the country to focus specifically on hockey-relating training, rehab and injury prevention.

“It will be a one-of-a-kind, world-class facility right here in Cranberry,” Morehouse said.

UPMC will build the 180,000 square foot facility at an estimated cost of $70 million. The complex will offer expert care in orthopaedics, concussion management, physical and occupational therapy, imaging and sports-performance training.

“The facility that we are planning here will comprise almost 50,000 square feet of clinical space for world-class orthopaedic and therapy programs,” said Liz Condordia, UPMC executive vice president. continued on page 143

PENGUINS ELITE The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, which is quickly becoming the premiere AAA hockey program in the area, will feature 14 teams — nine boys teams and five girls teams.

HEADS UP PITTSBURGH During the Summer of 2013, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine expanded their KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE concussion awareness program to include a free neck-strengthening kit during the new testing period. To date, over 8,000 youth athletes have been tested through the Heads Up Pittsburgh Program.

Free Neurocognitive Baseline Testing was available for athletes age 10-14 at four Community College of Allegheny County campus locations — Boyce, North, South and the West Hills Center. Testing also took place at the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side.

In an unprecedented move to provide precautions and exercises that could reduce concussions, the first 2,000 participants during that time also received a free neck-strengthening kit. Experts believe this device will help to cut down the number of youthathlete concussions. Those participants that signed up at UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side and the CCAC North campus were also eligible to have their neck strength tested and be part of an ongoing UPMC research project.

“We want to make the game safer for all young athletes. As a possible answer, we added the neck strengthening kit. Recently published research indicates that there is a direct correlation with improved neck strength and the reduction of concussions,” said Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation.

HOCKEY IS FOR EVERYONE For years Western Pennsylvania youth sports have been dominated by the likes of football, basketball and baseball.

Recently however, the region has begun to see a change in preference and participation in sports. Hockey is rapidly becoming the most popular and fastest growing sport in the area.

Success seen with the Pittsburgh Penguins on the NHL ice has surely created a demand and a certain excitement around the game, however the popularity of hockey goes well beyond the wins and world class talent the Penguins possess. A genuine love for the game is starting to sweep the area.

Kids are beginning to play hockey at younger and younger ages thanks to the Little Penguins: Learn to Play Hockey program.

This program will allow 1,000 kids, ages 4-8, to receive free headto-toe gear all thanks to the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and DICK’S Sporting Goods. Since it began in 2008-09 over 4,200 have been introduced to hockey through this program.

The Penguins have also teamed up with the DICK’S Sporting Goods, Trib Total Media and the YMCA to create the YMCA Jr. Penguins program which introduces children to the sport through ball hockey. To this point well over 3,100 children have learned and participated in organized ball hockey at local YMCAs. Recently the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered together for Project PowerPlay, which will build 12 continued on page 156 140

dek hockey rinks throughout Allegheny County over a three-year period and allow local residents to play dek hockey for free. Dek hockey is becoming a great way to learn and play hockey without having ice, and was also vital in the development of current Penguins forward Beau Bennett who grew up in sunny California.

On top of partnering with the Pennsylvania Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL), the Penguins and the Penguins Foundation have looked to support various hockey programs around the Pittsburgh area.

The Steel City Icebergs is an adaptive ice hockey program for both children and adults with developmental disabilities such as autism, down syndrome and traumatic brain injuries.

The Pittsburgh Mighty Penguins is a local sled hockey team, which is an internationally recognized event in the Paralympic games. The Mighty Penguins registered three teams on its roster that include youth, junior and adult players.

Pittsburgh Ice (Inclusion Creates Equality) provides children, who may not otherwise have the opportunity, to play ice hockey at no cost and experience such a great game.

Defending the Blue Line is a nonprofit organization created by soldiers with the spirit of keeping hockey alive for the children of our nation’s military heroes. It ensures that children of military members are afforded every opportunity to participate in the game of hockey by providing free equipment, hockey camps and financial assistance.

PROJECT POWER PLAY The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation’s Project Power Play initiative continues to flourish!

The two newest dek hockey KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE rinks at Richland Township and Oakmont-Riverside Park are ready just in time for back-to-school programs to utilize.

The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, Highmark, the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County began Project Power Play in the summer of 2012 to build two new dek hockey rinks at Banksville Park and Lewis Park in Phase 1 of a three-year plan. By 2014, 12 facilities in the Pittsburgh area will house new dek hockey rinks and the goal of this project is to introduce children to the game at the grass roots level and give them a free venue to play, while keeping them active and having fun.

The facilities, 155’ x 75’, are multi-sport courts and each includes a premier dasherboard system like those used in the NHL, players’ benches with shelter, penalty box, scorer’s table, scoreboard, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment.

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 39th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network.

Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001.

Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since.

Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07.

A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

PHIL BOURQUE PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK COLOR ANALYST

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 11th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange.

A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regularseason games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa.

Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

After a 17-year career as the Penguins beat writer for the Washington Observer-Reporter, Bob Grove joined the team’s radio broadcasts in 1998 as a frequent studio host/co-host and is now in his seventh season as full-time host of the pre- and post-game broadcasts and intermissions on the Penguins Hockey Network.

Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or IceTime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts Bob Grove’s Hot Stove on Penguins Radio 24/7.

STEVE KOLBE PENGUINS RADIO 24/7 HOST— PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK

Steve Kolbe enters his first season with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Kolbe spent 14 seasons (1997-2011) as the playby-play broadcaster for the Washington Capitals, broadcasting over 1100 games. His voice has been heard internationally on the NHL Network, XM Radio, NHL Radio, and ESPN. Kolbe broadcast the Stanley Cup Finals in 1998 and the NHL Winter Classic in 2011, and he was featured on the NHL Network’s documentary “Voices” in 2008.

A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Kolbe has over 25 years of broadcasting experience, and most recently has been a co-host of the Mid-Atlantic Sports Report on MASN (Mid Atlantic Sports Network) as well as talk show host for Major League Baseball coverage and NHL insider on CBS Radio 105.7 in Baltimore.

Kolbe is a 1989 graduate of Michigan State University and earned a B.A. in telecommunications.

HERE’S HOW REALIGNMENT AFFECTS PITTSBURGH’S SCHEDULE…

In total, the Penguins will play regular-season games this season — 30 against their seven fellow Metropolitan Division foes; 24 games against the eight teams from the Atlantic Division; and 28 games against the 14 teams from the Western Conference.

Pittsburgh will play five games against the Philadelphia Flyers (3 home; 2 away) and Columbus Blue Jackets (2 home; 3 away), and four games (2 home; 2 away) against the other five Metropolitan Division teams.

The Penguins will play three games each against the eight teams in the Atlantic division — either two at home and one away or once at home and twice away.

Teams that the Penguins will play twice at home and once away are Buffalo, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. Pittsburgh will play Boston, Detroit, Florida and Tampa Bay just once at home.

And finally, for the first time since the 1997-98 season, the Penguins will play each of the 14 Western Conference teams once at home and once on the road.

METROPOLITAN DIVISION

The pre-realignment Atlantic Division was known for being one of toughest and most competitive divisions in the NHL, as it was not uncommon to see all five teams battling until the end to make the playoffs every year (and usually at least three advancing). Plus, the gap between the first-place team and the last-place team tended to be relatively small, especially compared to the gaps in other divisions.

It also had some of the most intense rivalries, starting with the legendary, hate-filled and bitter one between cross-state teams Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. And there was no love lost between the Penguins and any of the other teams in the division, either.

It doesn’t look like the new Metropolitan Division will be any friendlier. All of the rivalries from the former Atlantic Division, of course, will stay intact. The Capitals are already a current rival of Pittsburgh with all of the star power and history, and now that they’ll see more of each other we can only speculate as to how much more intense that will become. And there’s also more juicy potential for dislike to build between the Penguins and both the Hurricanes and Blue Jackets. continued on page 164 181

NEW ADDITIONS: COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS

The main reason Pittsburgh and Columbus could develop an exciting rivalry is the short distance between them. All seven of the Penguins’ Metropolitan Division opponents are within driving distance, but Columbus is by far the closest at just under three hours away.

A lot of Penguins fans made the trip to Columbus the last time Pittsburgh played there on Dec. 4, 2010, with an influx of black and gold jerseys in the stands at the game. And with five games between the teams (three in Columbus, two in Pittsburgh) this season — including a home-and-home series on Nov. 1-2 — fans from both teams will venture into enemy territory to support their clubs. Call them destination rivals, if you will, with the added element of fan travel.

WASHINGTON CAPITALS

The Penguins and the Capitals already have one of the NHL’s marquee rivalries. They clashed in the 2011 Winter Classic at Heinz Field, on a few Super Bowl Sundays and had an epic playoff battle in 2009 when Pittsburgh defeated Washington in seven games during the conference semifinals on its way to winning the Stanley Cup. Now that the two 164 180

teams (just a four-hour drive apart) are in the same division and will play each other four times this season — including a home-and-home series on March 10-11 — it could become even more intense.

Pittsburgh and Washington developed such a strong rivalry because of star power. The Penguins have Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin while the Capitals have Alex Ovechkin. They are the three biggest superstars in the league and have been battling for individual honors (in addition to team glory in their playoff series) since Ovechkin broke into the NHL during the 2005-06 season. It’s always exciting to watch when they all go head-to-head.

The Penguins-Capitals rivalry flared up in the 90s when the two teams met seven times in 11 years — with the Penguins winning in six of those series. That hatred has been carried over during the Ovechkin-Crosby/Malkin era. And it should only get hotter as the teams enter the same division.

CAROLINA HURRICANES

Pittsburgh’s rivalry with Carolina may not be as developed as it is with Washington, but it could get there. If it does, we’d bet it’s because of the Jordan Staal — Brandon Sutter trade.

Staal, who played his first six NHL seasons with Pittsburgh, was a key member of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team and was part of the successful three-center model with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. But Staal wanted to play with his brother Eric, so the Penguins traded Jordan to Carolina at the 2012 NHL Draft for Sutter and prospects Brian Dumoulin and Derrick Pouliot. Staal signed a 10-year, $60-million deal with the Hurricanes a few days later.

Staal came to Pittsburgh just once in his first season with Carolina, in the final game of the regular season. The sellout crowd at CONSOL Energy Center gave him an extended standing ovation as a tribute played on the video board, and Staal was emotional as he stood up and acknowledged the fans he had played in front of for his first six seasons. But now that that’s over and done with, don’t expect things to remain as friendly and cordial as they are now. Staal is an important part of Penguins history, but not their present or future. He’s a competitive guy, and the Hurricanes expect a lot from him. He’ll want to do everything he can to lead his team to success in the future, including beating his former team whenever possible. continued on page 168 184

PLAYOFFS

Realignment doesn’t just affect the regular season; it affects the postseason as well. The playoffs are now division-based and with an added wild-card system.

The number of total playoff spots, 16, remains the same — eight for each conference. That means the Western Conference will have 14 teams competing for eight playoff spots, while the Eastern Conference will have 16 teams competing for eight playoff spots. It will likely end up being a tighter race for Pittsburgh and the rest of the Eastern Conference.

The top three teams in the Metropolitan Division and the top three teams from the Atlantic Division will fill the first six spots. The remaining two spots (Nos. 7 and 8) will be filled by the wild-card teams, who are the next two highest-placed finishers in each conference based on regular-season points and regardless of division.

That means the Metropolitan Division could send five teams to the playoffs while the Atlantic sends three; or vice versa. Or they could each send four. Regardless, the playoffs are now heavily based on divisional standings while before, only the division winner got a guaranteed spot in the playoffs.

NHL.com explained the seeding best…

“The seeding of the wild-card teams within each divisional playoff will be determined on the basis of regular-season points. The division winner with the most points in the conference will be matched against the wild-card team with the fewest points; the division winner with the second-most points in the conference will play the wild-card team with the second fewest points. The teams finishing second and third in each division will play in the first round of the playoffs. The winners of each series will play for berths in the conference championship series.”

So while the wildcard system makes it possible to play a team in the opening round of the playoffs outside of the division, it’s more likely that teams will be playing the first two rounds against divisional foes. And we’ve seen first-hand the last few years just how intense that can be.

to generate more offense. What separates the great passers from the good ones is not only are they able to deliver the puck to a teammate when he or she is wide open, but they are able to use the boards and make area passes to teammates in traffic. “Practice perfect passing.”

Everybody has probably heard the saying ‘good things happen when you go to the net.’ There is a good reason for that — everything happens there. When you have a chance to shoot, get the puck on net. You also have to make sure that you physically go to the net so that way you are there for tips, rebounds and screens — all plays that lead directly to goals.

ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area.

Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods.

In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture “Sudden Death.” He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances.

Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans.

Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. Since returning from the Olympic break the Penguins have been working hard to hone the mechanics of their game, but also their mentality.

Come April, it’ll be about structure and defensive-zone coverage, about the forecheck and puck management.

But to make all of the above hum, the Penguins will need the right mindset.

And that’s a mental page they’ve been working to collectively turn since Sochi.

To captain Sidney Crosby, it’ll be about “committing to playing defense and blocking shots,” to “for the most part just making sure we continue to play defense and kind of let our offensive game take care of itself.”

It’s not that the Penguins intend to become passive.

Head coach Dan Bylsma stressed last week after back-to-back encounters with the Capitals that the Penguins have internally discussed “getting better playing defense with the puck.

“We need to be better at playing defense in the offensive zone,” he said.

That better-defense-through-playing-offense approach has long been a Penguins’ mantra.

But when they set up shop in the opponents’ end they’ll have to be cognizant of what can go wrong. And before they get there they’ll have to proceed in the neutral zone and even on the breakout in a manner that avoids the turnovers and other mistakes that can prove so devastating in the postseason. continued on page 212

The objective is to become a team that’s defensively responsible and offensively combustible.

The idea is to let their determination and dedication take care of the defensive end and their individual skill sets handle the rest.

“We know exactly how playoff hockey is won,” Bylsma insisted.

“Playing defense, playing team defense, giving up two goals or less is where it’s at.

“The hard part, really, is being patient in that game, being patient in a 0-0 game, being patient in a 1-0 game and still being able to not go looking or expecting or hoping for offense.

“That’s where we have to be and we have to keep getting better.”

Defenseman Rob Scuderi wholeheartedly supports Bylsma’s edict and Crosby’s call for commitment to doing what’s necessary, to playing the game by the numbers until opportunities to do otherwise arise.

Scuderi does so having won a Stanley Cup with the Penguins and with the Kings and possessing a keen appreciation of what those championship runs demanded.

“It’s important because that’s the way you win in the postseason,” Scuderi said. “We have a lot of talent in this room but you can’t try to make a play every single time.

“You have to make the right play most times and then when the opportunity presents itself, that’s why we have these (highlyskilled) guys.”

“A simple play on the wall turns into a 2-on-1 for Sid, he’s got that tremendous talent and he buries it, puts the game away,” Scuderi said. “If we try to make some dipsy-doodle plays and some highlight-reel plays, it probably ends up in our net.”

As the season has progressed the calendar has changed.

So, too, must the way the Penguins think the game.

“There is a heightened sense of what you have to do and how you have to play and how tight it is,” Scuderi said. “It’s so hard to win a Stanley Cup, anyway. Why make it harder on yourself?”

Such a transition doesn’t come as naturally for world-class players as relentlessly pursuing those highlight-reel plays Scuderi referenced.

But the thought process must still be altered.

“It’s tough,” Scuderi acknowledged. “If we wanted to turn back the clock 25 years I can’t even imagine what this group could do.

But that’s not the way the game is any more. If you’re not going to learn to make the right play with the puck when you have to, you’re going to make it so much harder on yourself to win.

“We had a real good meeting a few games ago after we thought our team defense was out of control [following a 5-1 loss outdoors on March 1 at Soldier Field in Chicago]. We just talked about the fact that we can’t flip a switch when the postseason gets here. We have to work on it now.”

GLASS TALKS

DIET, TRAINING AND HIS UNIQUE WARMUP BY: MICHELLE CRECHIOLO

Tanner Glass has earned a reputation among fans for his gritty, hard-nosed style of play and willingness to sacrifice the body, especially on the penalty kill.

But what fans may not know is that Glass is just as dedicated off the ice when it comes to what he eats and how he trains.

“It’s definitely been a work in progress,” Glass said of his approach to health and fitness. “I’m so much more knowledgeable now than I was even two or three years ago. I’ve always been interested in it, but it’s something I enjoy. So it doesn’t feel like work when I’m cooking or warming up or cooling down or anything like that.”

Glass was kind enough to share his overall thoughts on his lifestyle.

TRAINING PHILOSOPHY

The 30-year-old winger averages just under 12 minutes a contest playing grinding third- and fourth-line shifts, with several intense shorthanded shifts in the mix as well.

“It’s funny, my training’s evolved over the years,” he said. “Now it’s about getting the body moving properly. In college and coming out of college, I worked a lot on getting bigger and stronger. But now, it’s about having the muscle mass on and I’m pretty much at the weight I’m going to be, so it’s about fine-tuning and getting my body moving properly and kind of the path of least resistance.

“You skate all season long and you get strong on the outsides of your legs and your glutes and you develop the same muscles over and over, so in the summertime a lot of it is kind of balancing the body back out and making sure you’re moving in the proper way.”

Glass continues to implement that same philosophy of keeping things balanced throughout the season, primarily in his postgame workouts.

SHERO INCREASES FORWARD DEPTH BY: MICHELLE CRECHIOLO

In his tenure as Penguins general manager, Ray Shero has garnered a reputation for being aggressive at the NHL’s trade deadline. So it wasn’t a surprise to see rumors linking Pittsburgh to Canucks forward Ryan Kesler, one of the biggest names on the market.

But while the buzz surrounding Kesler and the Penguins built to a frenzy over the last few days leading into the deadline, Shero and his staff were working quietly to execute their top priority: bolstering their forward depth.

And Shero feels they succeeded, as the Penguins acquired quality veteran forwards Marcel Goc and Lee Stempniak without surrendering any of their current rostered players before 3 p.m.

Eastern time.

“We had inquired with [Vancouver]. At the end of the day, obviously [Kesler] was not traded and I don’t think there was a deal there to be made,” Shero said. “Going into this deadline, a lot of the focus media-wise was on Ryan Kesler, not only in Pittsburgh but around other media markets. He’s a real good player.

“But I think our goal was to try to increase our depth up front and help our forward group, which I think we’ve accomplished [without trading] anybody off our roster. So that was our main goal. And I think with the [Pascal] Dupuis injury, with the Beau Bennett injury, it was important for us to try to do that. So hopefully it makes us a better, deeper team.”

In fact, if it weren’t for such significant injuries to Dupuis, Bennett, Kris Letang, Paul Martin and Tomas Vokoun, Shero may have stood pat at the trade deadline. But with top-six wingers Dupuis and Bennett sidelined and Martin set to return to the blue line around the start of the postseason, Shero decided his most urgent need was up top heading into the stretch run. And with those players all on either long-term injured reserve or injured reserve, he had the cap space to do something about it.

“If those guys were all healthy, we’re probably not doing anything because we’re a cap team and the cap went down six million dollars,” Shero explained. “But it was important to us, with these injuries, that we try to improve ourselves up front. . . I think what we did today is hopefully going to give us that opportunity to help out some of the players with our group and help our coaching staff get some options up front, which I think makes us a better hockey team.”

Primarily, the third line and its lack of identity — center Brandon Sutter has been playing with a rotating cast of wingers all season — was something Shero singled out as one of the biggest needs for his team, and something that needed to be addressed.

“We picked up one, maybe two players today because of that,” Shero said. “I think it’s an area we needed to improve. That’s what, as a group, we set out to do at this deadline, was outside of any big splash or big name, try to improve our depth and that third line or [acquire] guys who can play in your top nine and move around. I think we’ve accomplished that and I think we needed to improve upon that, for sure.”

With the versatility both players provide, they have the ability to plug into a lot of different spots throughout the lineup — giving the staff the luxury of options. So far, Stempniak has been a tremendous fit at right wing of the first line with Chris Kunitz and Sidney Crosby, while Goc has been a solid fourth-line center who’s been seeing a lot of penalty kill minutes.

“The good thing on these players is they’re very versatile guys, can play different positions,” he said. “Both can help our penalty kill and second power-play unit.

So I think what’s important to us is the depth at our forward position.

They’re players that have been in the league, played well in the league, and that’s what we’re looking for, to try to add to that.”

CAMPS & CLINICS HIGH PERFORMANCE CAMP WITH DON GRANATO The High Performance Camp with Don Granato, Head Coach of the USA Hockey U17 National Team and brother of Pittsburgh Penguins Assistant Coach Tony Granato, will be held June 13-15 at Bladerunners Warrendale. This camp is geared toward elite level hockey players. Don Granato has created a development plan specifically for this camp. This program will mimic how junior, college and professional hockey players improve their game in the off season through position specific skill development.

SCORING CAMP As the saying goes, “You can’t win, if you can’t score.” This camp will focus on the finer points of putting the puck in the net. From working on quick release to shot fakes, the players will learn everything they need to light the lamp. Players will get a chance to shoot a ton of pucks and will be put in different scoring scenarios.

DEFENSEMAN CAMP It is widely recognized that defensemen take more time to develop than forwards.

The reason for this is there are more responsibilities bestowed on them. The goal of this camp is to identify these responsibilities and show the skaters how to efficiently accomplish them. The skaters will work on D specific drills that will help them make decisions quicker, become more aggressive, and develop the defensemen’s mentality.

INSTRUCTIONAL 3-ON-3 Hockey is a game of creating opportunities in small spaces. Big Ice 3-on-3 leagues do not allow players to simulate these situations. This makes it easy for them to develop bad habits. In Penguins Hockey Development’s Cross Ice 3-on-3, the players will play on a third of the ice. This ensures that the puck will always be around them, while forcing them to make quick decisions. Goalies will get plenty of realistic shots, not just breakaway after breakaway.

TUNE-UP FOR TRYOUTS AND TUNE-UP FOR GOALIES This camp provides skill development and power-skating instruction from Cliff Loya and Max Ivanov. All goalies will received instruction from Mike Chiasson and Matt Wynn.
