THE SERIES

Tonight the Penguins resume play following the Olympic break by hosting the Montreal Canadiens . The teams have split two previous games this season, the Canadiens earning a 3-2 victory in Montreal on Nov . 23 and the Penguins earning a 5-1 victory here on Jan . 22 . . . Max Pacioretty, who played for Dan Byslma on Team USA in Sochi, scored twice in the November game to help Montreal to a 3-0 lead before two third-period goals by James Neal made it a closer game . Jussi Jokinen, who played for Team Finland at the Olympic Games, had two goals in the Penguins’ victory here last month. . . This is the last meeting of the teams this season . . . Pittsburgh is 7-1-1 in the last nine games between the teams, with both losses coming on the road by a single goal . The Penguins have won five straight home games against the Canadiens, their longest home win streak against Montreal, which has not won here in almost three years since a 3-0 victory on March 12, 2011 . The Penguins are 8-2-0 in their last 10 home games against the Canadiens . . .

Tonight marks the 100th regular-season game between the teams here in Pittsburgh, where Montreal faced the Penguins in their first NHL game on Oct . 11, 1967, a 2-1 Canadiens’ win . Pittsburgh is 58-109-30 all-time against Montreal.

THE PENGUINS

Fleury is 6-1-1 in his last eight decisions against Montreal. He has started every Pittsburgh home game against the Canadiens but one in his career, that coming on Nov. 10, 2005 when Jocelyn Thibault got the start in a 3-2 Pittsburgh win. Fleury is 10-5-0 with one no-decision in 16 career home starts against Montreal. . . After tonight’s game, the Penguins embark on a five-game road trip, beginning with a game Saturday night at Soldier Field in Chicago against the Blackhawks in the NHL’s Stadium Series. It is the third outdoor game in Penguins’ history, following their 2008 win at Buffalo (2-1 in a shootout) and their 2011 home loss to Washington (1-3). . .

After playing in Chicago, the Penguins play in Nashville on March 4, the day before the NHL trade deadline, in San Jose on March 6, in Anaheim on March 7 and in Washington on March 10. Montreal reeled off three straight victories prior to the NHL’s Olympic break, including a 4-1 victory at Carolina in their last game on Feb . 8 in which David Desharnais scored twice .

The Canadiens hit the break third in the Atlantic Division, one point behind Tampa Bay and eight behind first-place Boston, before hosting Detroit last night . . .

The Canadiens host Toronto on Saturday and then head West for a four-game trip that includes games against Los Angeles, Anaheim, Phoenix and San Jose . . .

The question sounded rhetorical, and came off as an attempt to once again emphasize the team nature of Team Canada’s Olympic triumph .

“Does anyone know who won the scoring race?” Canada/Detroit Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock wondered aloud after Canada had captured gold in Sochi .

Since you asked, coach: Phil Kessel of the USA/Toronto (5+3) and Erik Karlsson of Sweden/Ottawa (4+4 tied for the points lead in the Olympic tournament . Kessel was the leading goal-scorer with five and fellow American James van Riemsdyk (Toronto) had an Olympics-leading six assists . Mikael Granlund of Finland/Minnesota (3+4) and van Riemsdyk (1+6) tied for third in scoring .

Carey Price of Canada/Montreal had the top goals-against average (0 .59) and the best save percentage ( .972) .

MORE SPOILS: In addition to the medal-winning efforts of Canada (gold), Sweden (silver) and Finland (bronze), a few individual performances were recognized in Sochi .

COMMUNITY UPDATE SKATE WITH THE GREATS PRESENTED BY 84 LUMBER COMES TO CONSOL ENERGY CENTER BY: KRISTEN MANCHOR

We’re all accustomed to seeing the CONSOL Energy Center filled with fast paced hockey and top-notch fans, but how about seeing those fans down on the ice?

Supporters had a chance to share the ice with Penguins Alumni members during the third annual Penguins Alumni Skate with the Greats presented by 84 Lumber on January 13. Fans also had the opportunity to take part in two autograph sessions and purchase mystery autographed pucks sold by the alumni wives.

That evening, 600 fans enjoyed the opportunity to skate on the same ice the Pittsburgh Penguins call home. Penguins’ Director of Community and Alumni Relations Cindy Himes said, “It’s the first time we’ve ever held this event at CONSOL Energy Center and the fans seem to be having a blast!”

Alumni in attendance included Mark Recchi, Bryan Trottier, Jay Caufield, Troy Loney, Warren Young , Kim Clackson, Randy Hillier, Mark Kachowski, Ed Johnston, Phil Bourque, Duane Rupp, Pierre Larouche, Francois Leroux, Peter Taglianetti, Greg Malone, Dave Hannan, and honorary Penguins alumnus Dave Hanson. It’s great that all the alumni come back and we get to see each other .

Then we get to hang out with the Penguins fans, sign some autographs, and we go out and skate around a bit,” said Mark Recchi, member of the Penguins 1991 Stanley Cup Champion team .

With more than $21,000 grossed for Penguins Alumni Charities, specifically breast cancer research, this year’s event could definitely be classified as a huge success!

In addition to Skate with the Greats, the Penguins Alumni Association holds annual fundraisers including an Alumni Charity Golf Classic and a Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament . Over the past four years, the Penguins Alumni Association has donated over $208,000 to local charities .

It’s safe to say that both fans and alumni had a great time at this year’s skate . From skating on CONSOL Energy Center ice to autographs galore, the third annual Skate with the Greats presented by 84 Lumber will be an event to remember for many years .

The Penguins Alumni Association would like to thank the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation for its help in organizing the event, their spouses for selling mystery pucks, and especially the fans who made Skate with the Greats presented by 84 Lumber a huge success!

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 15th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including seven straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past six years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009.

Known as Le Magnifique, Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups.

A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033).

After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era.

In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 15th season as co-owner of the Penguins.

He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports.

Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for six-plus seasons.

Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less.

Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/ Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award.

DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT

David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Penguins, overseeing every aspect of the team’s operations.

Since Morehouse was named President in April, 2007, the Penguins have reshaped their image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology.

He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010. He reports directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle.

An emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.based NHL, NBA and MLB teams in local television ratings during the 2012-13 season. The Penguins’ rating of 12.66 was the highest achieved by any U.S.-based NHL, NBA or MLB team on a regional sports network since 2002. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins led all U.S.-based NHL teams in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales.

Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of the organization’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids ages 5-7 each year.

The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns.

He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights.

Ray Shero has established himself as one of the premiere NHL general managers during his tenure with the Penguins.

Shero, an active member with USA Hockey and a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group, will serve as associate general manager for Team USA at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Shero, who is in his eighth season as Pittsburgh’s GM, has transformed a franchise that missed the playoffs from 2002-06 into a perennial championship contender, including two Stanley Cup Final appearances and a Cup title in 2009.

Shero, who was named general manager of the Penguins in May, 2006, arrived with a firm, forward-thinking managerial style that incorporates cutting-edge methods of technology, player relations, prospect development and salary cap management.

Shero cut his administrative teeth during 14 seasons as an assistant general manager with the Nashville Predators (1998-06) and Ottawa Senators (1993-98).

Shero, a native of St. Paul, Minn., was raised in a hockey family filled with tradition. His father, Hall of Famer Fred Shero, played for the NY Rangers (1947-50) and coached the Philadelphia Flyers for seven seasons. Fred and Ray Shero are one of the few father-son tandems to have their names on the Cup. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. He twice led the team in scoring and was named team captain on two occasions. He graduated in 1984 as one of the top-10 scorers in school history.

Shero, who was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1982 NHL Draft, spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office.

Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

JASON BOTTERILL ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER

Jason Botterill is in his fifth full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position in May, 2009, by GM Ray Shero.

As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockeyrelated matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top minor-league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton of the American Hockey League.

Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 37, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins; his responsibilities included salary cap management, professional and amateur scouting and overseeing prospect development. His avant-garde approach and understanding of the salary cap has been a major asset for the Penguins.

Before joining the Pittsburgh organization, Botterill worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars.

Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in the 1994 NHL Draft and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. He also played 393 career games in the AHL and IHL, recording 127 goals and 257 points.

A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, ‘95 and ‘96 and won gold medals in all three tournaments.

Following his playing career, he returned to the University of Michigan to earn his MBA. Jason and his wife, Andrea, and their daughter, Alisa, reside in Pittsburgh.

DAN BYLSMA HEAD COACH

Dan Bylsma is already one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history, leading the team to a Stanley Cup championship, winning the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s Most Outstanding Coach, and an Atlantic Division title in just four-plus seasons behind the bench.

Bylsma has the best regular-season winning percentage (.669) in team history with an all-time record of 201-93-25. His 201 wins are the second most in team history (Eddie Johnston, 232).

In 2008-09, Bylsma penned one of the most remarkable starts to a head coaching career in NHL history. He began the season in his first head coaching job, with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League, and finished the year by raising the Stanley Cup. Bylsma was promoted to Pittsburgh on Feb. 15, 2009, inspiring an 18-3-4 run in the final 25 games to climb from 10th to fourth place and home-ice advantage in the opening round.

Bylsma joined the Penguins organization as assistant coach with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in 2006. Two seasons later he was promoted to WBS head coach in 2008-09. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-04. He was a member of Anaheim’s 2003 Western Conference championship team.

Bylsma played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green.

TONY GRANATO ASSISTANT COACH

Tony Granato is in his fifth season on the Penguins coaching staff.

Granato will also serve as assistant coach under head coach Dan Bylsma for Team USA at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.

Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato, 48, spent six seasons with the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach (2002-04 and 2008-09). Granato led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003.

Granato played 13 NHL seasons with the NY Rangers (1988-90), Los Angeles (90-96) and San Jose (96-01). In 1997, he played in the NHL All-Star Game and was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.

Granato played four seasons at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgers’ Hall of Fame in 2000. He also played for the U.S. National Team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary.

Tony and his wife, Linda, are the parents of four children and reside in the South Hills.

TODD REIRDEN ASSISTANT COACH

Todd Reirden is in his fourth season as an assistant coach with the Penguins.

Reirden, 41, joined the Penguins organization August 18, 2008 as an assistant coach in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. He was promoted to head coach following Dan Bylsma’s promotion to Pittsburgh. Reirden then joined Pittsburgh’s extended playoff coaching staff and helped the team win the Stanley Cup. In his only full season as head coach in WBS in 2009-10, Reirden led the team to a 41-34-2-3 mark and a playoff berth.

Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with his alma mater — the Bowling Green Falcons.

Reirden played 13 professional seasons, appearing in 183 NHL games with Edmonton, St. Louis, Atlanta and Phoenix.

Todd and his wife, Shelby, have one son, Travis, and reside in the North Hills.

JACQUES MARTIN ASSISTANT COACH

Jacques Martin is in his first season on the Penguins coaching staff.

Martin, 61, has spent nearly 30 years coaching at the NHL level, serving as head coach with St. Louis (1986-88), Ottawa (1995-2004), Florida (2005-08) and Montreal (2009-12) and as an assistant coach with Chicago (1988-90) and Quebec/Colorado (1990-95).

Martin was an associate coach on the 2002 Canadian Olympic squad that won a gold medal in Salt Lake City.

Martin was a Jack Adams Award recipient as NHL Coach of the Year with Ottawa in 1998-99, and was a finalist on three other occasions.

Also as head coach of the Florida Panthers, Martin worked a dual role as general manager from 2006-08.

Martin’s NHL head coaching resume includes 1,294 games, 613 wins and 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons. He ranks 10th all-time in wins and seventh all-time in games coached in NHL history.

Martin played college hockey at St. Lawrence University.

Jacques has two daughters.

MIKE BALES GOALTENDING COACH

Mike Bales is in his first season as Pittsburgh’s goaltending coach after serving the previous two seasons as the club’s goaltender development coach.

Under Bale’s tutelage during the 2012-13 season, goaltenders Jeff Zatkoff and Brad Thiessen of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins combined to allow the fewest goals (178) in the American Hockey League (AHL). Zatkoff’s 1.93 goals-against average was the lowest in the AHL. Bales, who hails from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the National Hockey League with Boston and Ottawa.

Bales, who was originally drafted by Boston in the fifth round of the 1990 NHL Draft, also saw action in the American Hockey League, the International Hockey League, Germany, Sweden and Northern Ireland.

Bales played three collegiate seasons with Ohio State University from 1989-92.

Mike and his wife, Melanie, have three children, William, Alexander and Alexa.

TRAVIS WILLIAMS CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

Travis Williams is in his third season as Chief Operating Officer of the Penguins, overseeing finance, legal affairs, technology, business development and arena operations while reporting directly to CEO/President David Morehouse.

Williams joined the Penguins in 2008 as Senior Vice President of Business Affairs/General Counsel and oversaw the construction and development of CONSOL Energy Center — bringing the project to completion on time and under budget. He is the organization’s liaison with building manager AEG Facilities and works closely with AEG on all arena-related events and initiatives.

Williams also is the Penguins’ point man on the development of the former Civic Arena site and the construction of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry.

Previously, he had been a partner at Reed Smith LLP. Williams graduated from Penn State University and received a Juris Doctorate from Duquesne University, summa cum laude. He lives in Nevillewood with his wife, Nichole, and six children.

DAVID PEART SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT, SALES

David Peart is in his third full season as Senior Vice President of Sales and Service, overseeing all local revenue generating departments for the team including business partnerships, corporate sales, premium seating, ticket sales, broadcasting, and concession and merchandise sales strategy.

Under his direction, the Penguins created the team’s Founding Partner Program at CONSOL Energy Center and launched one of the most comprehensive fan engagement initiatives in sports helping, the team to be consistently ranked among the top sports teams in Fan Relations, according to ESPN the Magazine.

Peart has a wide range of sports management experience, having held senior-level positions with the San Francisco 49ers, Houston Texans, Dallas Stars and Texas Rangers. The Kennedy Township native is a graduate of Point Park University, where he is a member of the Board of Trustees. He and his wife, Julie, have two children.

The first-ever episode of In The Room in 2011 chronicled Sidney Crosby’s return to the lineup after missing more than 60 games due to injury. The show’s staff followed Evgeni Malkin to Russia to witness his off-season workouts in his home country, and documented a unique oneon-one workout session between coach Bylsma and Kris Letang.

Season Two showcased the dedication and human side of a hockey player. Joe Vitale said goodbye to his wife and kids before a road trip, and two former NHL captains, Jarome Iginla and Brenden Morrow, said goodbye to their old teams as Ray Shero acquired them prior to the trade deadline. Chatter on the bench between James Neal and Malkin during a game highlighted their unique relationship, and the highs and lows of a long postseason run were revealed.

The current season began with a trip to West Point. Lessons in leadership, teamwork and sacrifice were stressed — ideals that the 2013-14 Penguins would build upon. The players carried a rock to the top of a mountain — and that rock is handed out after continued on page 66

ELITE 2014 PEE-WEE QUEBEC TOURNAMENT

This February, during the NHL Olympic break, the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite Hockey Program will be sending a team to the 55th Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament 2014, from February 12th to 23rd at the Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec.

The Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament is known as the most important minor hockey tournament in the world, grouping young hockey players (11 and 12 years old). About 2,200 young hockey players from 15 countries come to Quebec to participate in the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament.

This Tournament takes place during a period of 12 days with crowds totaling around 200,000 fans, every year. This extraordinary event, very popular, was founded in 1960 and has never ceased to grow in importance.

The members of this team will not only be a part of a great tournament but will follow in the footsteps of some of the greatest hockey players of all time. Many stars from the National Hockey League have passed through this Tournament: Brad Park, Guy Lafleur, Marcel Dionne, Gilbert Perrault, Mark Howe, Wayne Gretzky, Sylvain C么t茅, Eric Lindros, among many others including Penguins owner Mario Lemieux. continued on page 102

“When we first broached the subject of going to Québec with the team and parents at the beginning of the season, they were obviously very excited. As the season has progressed and we have gotten closer to the Québec International Tournament, the team has become much more excited about the chance to play in such an exciting event.” Team Business manager Tim Krock said, “The tournament has a very rich tradition, and I think that the boys really do understand that. We are very grateful to have this opportunity, and it is in large part a reality due to the generosity of the Pittsburgh Penguins, DICK’S Sporting Goods, and GNC.” This year, the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite is sending up their Pee-Wee Major team (2001 birth years) to compete in this year’s tournament. The team will be coached by Mike Schall and former Penguin and three-time Stanley Cup Winner, Mark Recchi.

Thanks to GNC, this team will travel to this tournament that will feature the best Pee-Wee hockey teams from around the world and promises to be a competitive and fun atmosphere for this Pens Elite team. Pittsburgh will be well represented not only with talent, but with awesome uniforms. Going back into the archives, this team will be wearing the old school black/yellow sweaters that the Pittsburgh Penguins wore back in the early 90’s.

It was one save. It came in a regular-season game that was mostly forgettable otherwise. It earned an extra point. But that extra point isn’t likely to mean anything in the standings. This save will turn out to be of minimal consequence.

But, boy…what a save!

Marc-Andre Fleury stole the show when he thrust himself across the crease to deny Erik Karlsson with his glove as the host Penguins beat visiting Ottawa 2-1 on Feb. 3. James Neal scored in overtime, but Fleury’s save won the game. It came with 10:33 remaining in the third period and the game tied 1-1.

Descriptions don’t do Fleury’s save justice. It was absolute robbery, with Fleury’s glove out-quicking Karlsson’s shot to the net’s upper right corner.

It wasn’t the most meaningful great save in franchise history: That would be “The Save,” one made by Frank Pietrangelo on New Jersey’s Peter Stastny in the 1991 playoffs. If Pietrangelo doesn’t flash leather to help win Game Six of that first-round series against the Devils, the Penguins probably don’t win the Stanley Cup. But for pure difficulty, hand-eye coordination and raw athleticism, it’s hard to remember a Penguins goaltender ever making a better stop. continued on page 111

It was definitely the best save Coach Dan Bylsma has seen Fleury make.

“Yes. Yes. Flat out,” Bylsma said. “The athleticism to get over there is one thing. The ability to get your glove up to that high right corner — he had to move to get it. It wasn’t just, stick your glove out and Karlsson shoots it into the glove. I’m not sure I’ve seen another save live that was any better than that.”

The other dressing room gave Fleury his due.

“That’s something I did not count on,” said Karlsson, top scorer among NHL defensemen.

“It’s a great save. I can’t really do anything other than tip my hat and say, ‘Good job.’ It was a clear shot and an open net, but he clearly denied me.

Pretty hard, too.

“Unfortunately, I’m going to be on the highlights for quite some time with that one.”

Said Sens captain Jason Spezza, “He’s quick. One of the quickest in the game. Pretty good shot by Erik. Not much more you can do. It was just a good save.”

Ottawa goalie Craig Anderson made 46 saves on the evening, Fleury just 24. But Fleury’s remarkable stop was the one that had people buzzing.

“It was a game-changer,” Anderson said. “Obviously, he’s quick. He moves well side to side, and he always gives himself an opportunity to make the save. I broke into the league right around the same time as him, and I’ve seen him make saves like that on numerous occasions.” continued on page 113

With all due respect to Anderson, the game’s No. 2 star that night — no goalie makes saves like that on numerous occasions.

OT hero Neal knew Fleury’s stop was something special: “I think that’s the best one I’ve ever seen him make. The one he made in Calgary with the back of his head was pretty crazy. He’s been doing that all year.”

Neal was referring to a save Fleury made against Calgary’s Mikael Backlund in a 2-1 victory at Calgary on Jan. 11. A screened Fleury spun around and deflected aside Backlund’s shot from the left circle with the back of his head.

Fleury was characteristically modest about his stop on Karlsson: “I knew I was in trouble because I saw that [Karlsson] had a little bit of time and some room to come to the net, so I thought he was maybe going to shoot. I just tried to get my leg and glove over there. I’m glad it went in the glove.

“You never think you’re beat until it goes in. Every goalie is like that. I knew I had my pads on the ice, and my glove in mid-air. I’m just happy I caught it.”

GYMNASTICS LEGENDS DESCRIBE THRILL OF UPCOMING NATIONALS

When the 2014 P&G Gymnastics SPONSORED LOCALLY BY Championships come to Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center in August, there will be two special fans cheering on competitors in the four-day event.

Bela Karolyi, one of the world’s most successful gymnastics coaches, and Carly Patterson, 2004 All-Around Olympic Gold medalist, visited Pittsburgh to check out the venue and to talk about the significance of this event which is being held for the first time in Pittsburgh.

The 2014 P&G Gymnastics Championships, USA Gymnastics’ national championships, showcase the country’s best male and female gymnasts. It also will determine the U.S. champions and the U.S. national team for the junior and senior elite levels.

“Wow! What a beautiful arena,” Karolyi says of CONSOL Energy Center on his first visit to the venue. “What an excellent place to perform.”

Patterson agrees, “CONSOL Energy Center looks like a great place. I’m excited to be here.”

Karolyi says, “I’ll be here rooting and encouraging all of the participants to do their best.”

The long-time coach and influential figure in gymnastics, Karolyi now has snowy white hair, and his passion for gymnastics and his signature mustache are as vibrant as ever.

Making a round of Pittsburgh media to promote the upcoming P&G Gymnastics Championships, Karolyi talked about the significance of the championships, his career and the future, as well as the rich history of gymnastics.

“We could have a world changer here in Pittsburgh with the world medalists who will be here,” Karolyi says.

The standards of gymnastics are higher than ever before, according to Karolyi who says that people will not be able to imagine the spectacular athletic CARLY PATTERSON performances that they will see at the 2014 championships.

“It will be a great moment in Pittsburgh gymnastics,” he says, adding, “Who knows who will make history? There could be another Nadia [Comaneci] or Gabby [Douglas].”

“It will be inspiring,” he says.

“The P&G Gymnastics Championships are a unique opportunity to see the best in the world,” Karolyi says.

Patterson, who has experienced some great moments in gymnastics history herself, shares this view. “It’s an exciting time for the sport,” she says, pointing out that the 2014 championship will draw the likes of 2012 Olympic Team Gold Medalists Kyla Ross and McKayla Maroney, and Biles.

“It is the biggest competition of the year,” says Carly pointing out that the best gymnasts in the nation, juniors and seniors will come to Pittsburgh to compete for the country’s highest honors in the sport.

For local gymnasts and fans of the sport, Patterson says, “You’re lucky when it comes to your city. We will have the best in the United States, boys and girls, competing. It’s the chance to enjoy your sport firsthand and to see world class athletes in your backyard.” continued on page 134

She recalls watching championship performances when she was a young gymnast herself and says that it was inspiring and motivational to her to see high caliber gymnasts vying for top honors.

Besides designating gymnastics new national champions and recognizing the individuals’ years of work to hone their performances, Karolyi says, it is “the moment” that is the dream of many young athletes.

“Kids are working 8-10 years to get to the national championships.”

Karolyi says that for young gymnasts who dream of being champions, the JAKE DALTON impact of witnessing a live competition for national honors can impress and motivate them.

“It is the life-time chance to see athletes perform at this level,” he says.

“Thousands of kids will come and go home dreaming,” Karolyi says.

“Let’s embrace this competition and give kids the opportunity to get inspired. People will be glad that they did,” he says.

What attracts Karolyi to the sport of gymnastics? “It’s unique and beautiful,” he says.

Floor exercise is his favorite part of gymnastic competition. He calls it a showcase of athletic ability and strength combined with music, dance and expression. “It’s a beautiful combination” he says.

When she was competing, Patterson says, “Yes, beam was always my favorite event and to have a dismount named after me that is still one of the hardest dismounts you can do makes me really proud of that. My favorite part of competition now is just watching all the young talent getting better and better and doing so well. It is so nice to sit back and relax and enjoy my sport in a different light, especially knowing that I achieved my ultimate goal in gymnastics.”

Discussing what it takes to make a champion, Karolyi says, “The element of performance is needed in addition to the mental element, the drive, soul and feelings.” Mental strength, high difficulty performance and attitude are all necessary to success, he says.

Patterson says that excellence in gymnastics teaches and exacts “dedication, commitment and lots of hard work.”

Its lessons have relevance for her now as she pursues a college degree from Texas Women’s University and a career in public speaking.

On her rise to the top of the world of women’s gymnastics, Patterson laughs and says, “Looking at early videos, no one would have expected it.” continued on page 137

Known as one of the world’s most successful gymnastics coaches and a leader in the sport, Karolyi had a somewhat ironic career as a gymnast.

He has produced 28 Olympians, nine Olympic champions, 15 world champions, 12 European champions and six U.S. national champions and says that he struggled in the sport as an athlete in college.

“I thought who in the world created this crazy sport.” It was a required study in his physical education training. He says that he was almost “kicked out” of the university over the gymnastics test.

His wife Marta, herself a world renowned gymnastics coach, played a crucial role in his gymnastics career.

“I met a young lady. She was a great gymnast. We shared a dream together,” he says.

Of her gymnastics career, Patterson says, “It was just one of those things that was meant to be.”

She confirms that when she attended her cousin’s gymnastics-themed birthday party, “I fell in love with it. My cousin was not a gymnast. She just had her party there.” Laughing, Patterson adds, “She says that I owe her.”

Entering the sport at age six, Patterson became the top gymnast in the world in a decade.

As a Level 10 gymnast in 2000, she watched Elite gymnasts at a competition and says, “I knew then that I wanted to be like those girls. I knew that I had four SHAWN JOHNSON years to work my butt off to be ready.”

“In 2000 a lot happened. I went Elite from Level 10,” Patterson says. She also remembers dealing with her family’s move to another city and having to change gym’s which she says turned out to be a blessing.

“I had to keep an eye on the end goal, stay healthy and keep working,” she says.

In the 2003 World Championships, she won 2nd in the All-Around competition, and a year later, she became the U.S. National Co-Champion, and went on to be the first American woman to take the Olympic Gold for the All-Around in 20 years. continued on page 138

Patterson says that gymnasts have a “special connection” whether they are Olympians or beginners in their first year.

To all of the gymnasts who share the dream of being the best, Patterson says, “Gymnastics is such a great sport. Even if you don’t go to the Olympics or get a scholarship, it’s a great foundation, develops motor skills and teaches a lot about your body.”

She adds, “Be proud just to be a gymnast. You are doing something that not everyone can do.”

Asked about the future of the sport of gymnastics, Karolyi says, “There have been crucial moments in the history of gymnastics when I’ve thought ‘This is the most intense and highest performance of human capacity’.”

He cites as examples performances by Nadia Comaneci and Mary Lou Retton. Comaneci is the only gymnast to ever score perfect 10 in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal.

In 1984 at the Olympics in Los Angeles, the energetic and physical performance of Mary Lou Retton earned her the all-around gymnastics championship.

“The sport is ever developing in difficulty, the components, dance and music. I don’t believe there is a limit now,” Karolyi says.

JOHN OROZCO On this topic, Patterson says, “I have already seen the sport of gymnastics rise so much after the 2004 Olympics and it has been great to watch. I only see good things for the future and for our country to keep dominating like we have been!”

Citing Retton’s “lovely personality” and “fiery performance,” Karolyi says, “Mary Lou turned the page on gymnastics toward making it the nation’s number one sport.” He points out that women’s gymnastics is the most watched sport in the country.

Karolyi calls Retton, “Mary Lou, my sunshine of my coaching career.” He says that unlike some youngsters who were quiet and perhaps intimidated by his coaching style, Retton was bubbly and enthusiastic and enjoyed every second of training and competing.

Looking ahead to the next Olympic Games in 2016, Karolyi says, “We are going to try to make it. We will probably retire after 2016,” he says noting that he and his wife have been involved in the sport for some 50 years.

“We deserve to retire,” he says, and then after a moment’s pause he adds, “We will never stop contributing as much as we can.”

The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, scheduled to open in Cranberry in the summer of 2015, will feature two sheets of ice and serve as the Penguins’ official practice rink — but, as Penguins CEO David Morehouse said, “it will be much more than a hockey rink.”

The complex will be the first medical facility in the country to focus specifically on hockey-relating training, rehab and injury prevention.

“It will be a one-of-a-kind, world-class facility right here in Cranberry,” Morehouse said.

UPMC will build the 180,000 square foot facility at an estimated cost of $70 million. The complex will offer expert care in orthopaedics, concussion management, physical and occupational therapy, imaging and sports-performance training.

“The facility that we are planning here will comprise almost 50,000 square feet of clinical space for world-class orthopaedic and therapy programs,” said Liz Condordia, UPMC executive vice president. continued on page 143

PENGUINS ELITE The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, which is quickly becoming the premiere AAA hockey program in the area, will feature 14 teams — nine boys teams and five girls teams.

The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite teams will compete in the Tier I Elite Hockey League that includes the Philadelphia Junior Flyers, the Buffalo Junior Sabres, the DC Capitals, the Dallas AAA Stars, the Phoenix Junior Coyotes and the Los Angeles Junior Kings, among others.

HEADS UP PITTSBURGH During the Summer of 2013, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine expanded their KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE concussion awareness program to include a free neck-strengthening kit during the new testing period. To date, over 8,000 youth athletes have been tested through the Heads Up Pittsburgh Program.

Free Neurocognitive Baseline Testing was available for athletes age 10-14 at four Community College of Allegheny County campus locations — Boyce, North, South and the West Hills Center. Testing also took place at the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side.

In an unprecedented move to provide precautions and exercises that could reduce concussions, the first 2,000 participants during that time also received a free neck-strengthening kit. Experts believe this device will help to cut down the number of youthathlete concussions. Those participants that signed up at UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side and the CCAC North campus were also eligible to have their neck strength tested and be part of an ongoing UPMC research project.

“We want to make the game safer for all young athletes. As a possible answer, we added the neck strengthening kit. Recently published research indicates that there is a direct correlation with improved neck strength and the reduction of concussions,” said Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation.

Success seen with the Pittsburgh Penguins on the NHL ice has surely created a demand and a certain excitement around the game, however the popularity of hockey goes well beyond the wins and world class talent the Penguins possess. A genuine love for the game is starting to sweep the area.

Kids are beginning to play hockey at younger and younger ages thanks to the Little Penguins: Learn to Play Hockey program.

This program will allow 1,000 kids, ages 4-8, to receive free headto-toe gear all thanks to the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and DICK’S Sporting Goods. Since it began in 2008-09 over 4,200 have been introduced to hockey through this program.

The Penguins have also teamed up with the DICK’S Sporting Goods, Trib Total Media and the YMCA to create the YMCA Jr. Penguins program which introduces children to the sport through ball hockey. To this point well over 3,100 children have learned and participated in organized ball hockey at local YMCAs. Recently the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered together for Project PowerPlay, which will build 12 continued on page 156 140

dek hockey rinks throughout Allegheny County over a three-year period and allow local residents to play dek hockey for free. Dek hockey is becoming a great way to learn and play hockey without having ice, and was also vital in the development of current Penguins forward Beau Bennett who grew up in sunny California.

On top of partnering with the Pennsylvania Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL), the Penguins and the Penguins Foundation have looked to support various hockey programs around the Pittsburgh area.

The Steel City Icebergs is an adaptive ice hockey program for both children and adults with developmental disabilities such as autism, down syndrome and traumatic brain injuries.

The Pittsburgh Mighty Penguins is a local sled hockey team, which is an internationally recognized event in the Paralympic games. The Mighty Penguins registered three teams on its roster that include youth, junior and adult players.

Pittsburgh Ice (Inclusion Creates Equality) provides children, who may not otherwise have the opportunity, to play ice hockey at no cost and experience such a great game.

Defending the Blue Line is a nonprofit organization created by soldiers with the spirit of keeping hockey alive for the children of our nation’s military heroes. It ensures that children of military members are afforded every opportunity to participate in the game of hockey by providing free equipment, hockey camps and financial assistance.

PROJECT POWER PLAY The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation’s Project Power Play initiative continues to flourish!

The two newest dek hockey KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE rinks at Richland Township and Oakmont-Riverside Park are ready just in time for back-to-school programs to utilize.

The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, Highmark, the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County began Project Power Play in the summer of 2012 to build two new dek hockey rinks at Banksville Park and Lewis Park in Phase 1 of a three-year plan. By 2014, 12 facilities in the Pittsburgh area will house new dek hockey rinks and the goal of this project is to introduce children to the game at the grass roots level and give them a free venue to play, while keeping them active and having fun.

The facilities, 155’ x 75’, are multi-sport courts and each includes a premier dasherboard system like those used in the NHL, players’ benches with shelter, penalty box, scorer’s table, scoreboard, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment.

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 39th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network.

Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001.

Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since.

Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07.

A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

PHIL BOURQUE PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK COLOR ANALYST

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 11th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange.

A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regularseason games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa.

Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

After a 17-year career as the Penguins beat writer for the Washington Observer-Reporter, Bob Grove joined the team’s radio broadcasts in 1998 as a frequent studio host/co-host and is now in his seventh season as full-time host of the pre- and post-game broadcasts and intermissions on the Penguins Hockey Network.

Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or IceTime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts Bob Grove’s Hot Stove on Penguins Radio 24/7.

Steve Kolbe enters his first season with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Kolbe spent 14 seasons (1997-2011) as the playby-play broadcaster for the Washington Capitals, broadcasting over 1100 games. His voice has been heard internationally on the NHL Network, XM Radio, NHL Radio, and ESPN. Kolbe broadcast the Stanley Cup Finals in 1998 and the NHL Winter Classic in 2011, and he was featured on the NHL Network’s documentary “Voices” in 2008.

A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Kolbe has over 25 years of broadcasting experience, and most recently has been a co-host of the Mid-Atlantic Sports Report on MASN (Mid Atlantic Sports Network) as well as talk show host for Major League Baseball coverage and NHL insider on CBS Radio 105.7 in Baltimore.

Kolbe is a 1989 graduate of Michigan State University and earned a B.A. in telecommunications.

HERE’S HOW REALIGNMENT AFFECTS PITTSBURGH’S SCHEDULE…

In total, the Penguins will play regular-season games this season — 30 against their seven fellow Metropolitan Division foes; 24 games against the eight teams from the Atlantic Division; and 28 games against the 14 teams from the Western Conference.

Pittsburgh will play five games against the Philadelphia Flyers (3 home; 2 away) and Columbus Blue Jackets (2 home; 3 away), and four games (2 home; 2 away) against the other five Metropolitan Division teams.

The Penguins will play three games each against the eight teams in the Atlantic division — either two at home and one away or once at home and twice away.

Teams that the Penguins will play twice at home and once away are Buffalo, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. Pittsburgh will play Boston, Detroit, Florida and Tampa Bay just once at home.

And finally, for the first time since the 1997-98 season, the Penguins will play each of the 14 Western Conference teams once at home and once on the road.

METROPOLITAN DIVISION

The pre-realignment Atlantic Division was known for being one of toughest and most competitive divisions in the NHL, as it was not uncommon to see all five teams battling until the end to make the playoffs every year (and usually at least three advancing). Plus, the gap between the first-place team and the last-place team tended to be relatively small, especially compared to the gaps in other divisions.

It also had some of the most intense rivalries, starting with the legendary, hate-filled and bitter one between cross-state teams Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. And there was no love lost between the Penguins and any of the other teams in the division, either.

It doesn’t look like the new Metropolitan Division will be any friendlier. All of the rivalries from the former Atlantic Division, of course, will stay intact. NEW ADDITIONS: COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS

The main reason Pittsburgh and Columbus could develop an exciting rivalry is the short distance between them. All seven of the Penguins’ Metropolitan Division opponents are within driving distance, but Columbus is by far the closest at just under three hours away.

A lot of Penguins fans made the trip to Columbus the last time Pittsburgh played there on Dec. 4, 2010, with an influx of black and gold jerseys in the stands at the game. And with five games between the teams (three in Columbus, two in Pittsburgh) this season — including a home-and-home series on Nov. 1-2 — fans from both teams will venture into enemy territory to support their clubs. Call them destination rivals, if you will, with the added element of fan travel.

WASHINGTON CAPITALS

The Penguins and the Capitals already have one of the NHL’s marquee rivalries. They clashed in the 2011 Winter Classic at Heinz Field, on a few Super Bowl Sundays and had an epic playoff battle in 2009 when Pittsburgh defeated Washington in seven games during the conference semifinals on its way to winning the Stanley Cup. Now that the two 164 180

teams (just a four-hour drive apart) are in the same division and will play each other four times this season — including a home-and-home series on March 10-11 — it could become even more intense.

Pittsburgh and Washington developed such a strong rivalry because of star power. The Penguins have Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin while the Capitals have Alex Ovechkin. They are the three biggest superstars in the league and have been battling for individual honors (in addition to team glory in their playoff series) since Ovechkin broke into the NHL during the 2005-06 season. It’s always exciting to watch when they all go head-to-head.

The Penguins-Capitals rivalry flared up in the 90s when the two teams met seven times in 11 years — with the Penguins winning in six of those series. That hatred has been carried over during the Ovechkin-Crosby/Malkin era. And it should only get hotter as the teams enter the same division.

CAROLINA HURRICANES

Pittsburgh’s rivalry with Carolina may not be as developed as it is with Washington, but it could get there. If it does, we’d bet it’s because of the Jordan Staal — Brandon Sutter trade.

Staal, who played his first six NHL seasons with Pittsburgh, was a key member of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team and was part of the successful three-center model with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. But Staal wanted to play with his brother Eric, so the Penguins traded Jordan to Carolina at the 2012 NHL Draft for Sutter and prospects Brian Dumoulin and Derrick Pouliot. Staal signed a 10-year, $60-million deal with the Hurricanes a few days later.

Staal came to Pittsburgh just once in his first season with Carolina, in the final game of the regular season. The sellout crowd at CONSOL Energy Center gave him an extended standing ovation as a tribute played on the video board, and Staal was emotional as he stood up and acknowledged the fans he had played in front of for his first six seasons. But now that that’s over and done with, don’t expect things to remain as friendly and cordial as they are now. Staal is an important part of Penguins history, but not their present or future. He’s a competitive guy, and the Hurricanes expect a lot from him. He’ll want to do everything he can to lead his team to success in the future, including beating his former team whenever possible. continued on page 168 184

PLAYOFFS

Realignment doesn’t just affect the regular season; it affects the postseason as well. The playoffs are now division-based and with an added wild-card system.

The number of total playoff spots, 16, remains the same — eight for each conference. That means the Western Conference will have 14 teams competing for eight playoff spots, while the Eastern Conference will have 16 teams competing for eight playoff spots. It will likely end up being a tighter race for Pittsburgh and the rest of the Eastern Conference.

The top three teams in the Metropolitan Division and the top three teams from the Atlantic Division will fill the first six spots. The remaining two spots (Nos. 7 and 8) will be filled by the wild-card teams, who are the next two highest-placed finishers in each conference based on regular-season points and regardless of division.

That means the Metropolitan Division could send five teams to the playoffs while the Atlantic sends three; or vice versa. Or they could each send four. Regardless, the playoffs are now heavily based on divisional standings while before, only the division winner got a guaranteed spot in the playoffs.

NHL.com explained the seeding best…

“The seeding of the wild-card teams within each divisional playoff will be determined on the basis of regular-season points. The division winner with the most points in the conference will be matched against the wild-card team with the fewest points; the division winner with the second-most points in the conference will play the wild-card team with the second fewest points. The teams finishing second and third in each division will play in the first round of the playoffs. The winners of each series will play for berths in the conference championship series.”

So while the wildcard system makes it possible to play a team in the opening round of the playoffs outside of the division, it’s more likely that teams will be playing the first two rounds against divisional foes. And we’ve seen first-hand the last few years just how intense that can be.

to generate more offense. What separates the great passers from the good ones is not only are they able to deliver the puck to a teammate when he or she is wide open, but they are able to use the boards and make area passes to teammates in traffic. “Practice perfect passing.”

Everybody has probably heard the saying ‘good things happen when you go to the net.’ There is a good reason for that — everything happens there. When you have a chance to shoot, get the puck on net. You also have to make sure that you physically go to the net so that way you are there for tips, rebounds and screens — all plays that lead directly to goals.

ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area.

Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods.

In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture “Sudden Death.” He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances.

Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans.

Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. The Penguins came up short in the quest to achieve one of their pre-Olympic break goals, but they were close enough to what they were after to be able to scatter for their mid-February hiatus encouraged about what they might yet accomplish upon their return.

“We were hoping to get 22 goals [against] or less in the 10game segment,” head coach Dan Bylsma explained after the Penguins’ 4-3 shootout loss to the Rangers on Feb. 7. “The third one [for the Rangers] was the 23rd.

“We were one shy of that in terms of playing good defense, keeping the puck out of our net.”

The Penguins were especially adept at doing that over the final six games of their self-appointed, 10-game defensive test.

They shutout Buffalo on Jan. 27 and held the Kings (on Jan, 30 in Los Angeles), the Senators and the Sabres (Feb. 5 in Buffalo) to just one goal apiece.

“The scoring chances [against] were under 12 in those games,” Bylsma reported.

Even in a 3-1 loss on Feb. 1 in Phoenix, “we talked about playing that game at 1-0 or 1-1, playing well for the first two periods and then sticking with it,” he continued. “We did that again when we got home and played a patient game, a 62-minute game [a 2-1 triumph in OT], and we had talked about that beforehand. If it takes us to the 58th minute, the 61st minute to win 1-0, that was our mindset. continued on page 212

“I thought we did a real good job.”

The Penguins remain a potent offensive bunch.

But they’re also one that’s aware of the changing nature of the game as the stretch run and the playoffs come more into focus.

“Teams are playing pretty tight but that’s something that as the year goes on isn’t going to get any easier,” captain Sidney Crosby observed before heading for Sochi, Russia and the Winter Olympics. “It gets tougher and tougher as you get closer to the playoffs.”

Fellow Canadian Olympian Chris Kunitz concurred.

“It’s a little more of a grinding game than maybe we’ve been used to for the first 50 games but every game’s going to be tight now,” he said. “There are going to be one-goal games.

Everybody’s fighting for those points to position themselves for the playoffs.”

The Penguins are aware they must respond accordingly, that they must play with structure and discipline to give themselves their best chance to win.

“It’ll be a good test every time you go on the ice to try to compete and play more like playoff hockey,” Kunitz continued, looking ahead to the resumption of the NHL season tonight at CONSOL Energy Center against Montreal. “We’ve been talking about it for about a month now. The Penguins hit the Olympic break tied for sixth in the NHL in goals-against per game through 58 games at 2.36 (the Canadiens were also at 2.36 through 57 games).

That wasn’t far off the St. Louis Blues’ figure of 2.32 goals-against per game, so the Penguins were at least operating at close to a bronze medal level in terms of how efficient they’d been at keeping pucks out of their cage.

But a bronze medal is still less than the gold standard to ~ CHRIS KUNITZ which the Penguins aspire.

The challenge for the rest of the regular season will be to continue honing their discipline and structure.

And that was a task the Penguins sought to familiarize themselves with during their last 10 games before the Olympics.

“The last three games we’ve been patient with our game,” winger James Neal observed before the Penguins played at Buffalo on Feb. 5. “We’ve put pucks on the net and we’re going there.

“That’s a good thing.”

Especially when unnecessary risks and potentially-crippling turnovers can be avoided in the process, as the Penguins have done.

The idea the rest of the way will be to continue playing with speed and to get pucks to the other team’s net but at the same time avoid allowing games to degenerate into wide-open affairs that trade chances at either end.

“We have to show each other that we believe we’re only going to give up one or two goals a game and we don’t have to outscore a team by five to win a game,” Kunitz stressed. “We have to make sure we can shut teams down and trust and have confidence in that style of play.”

NHL STADIUM SERIES The Penguins will once again take it to the great outdoors, playing in Chicago’s Soldier Field as part of the new NHL Stadium Series on March 1, 2014. The Stadium Series will consist of four outdoor games: two in New York’s Yankee Stadium, one at Dodger Stadium in L.A., and the Penguins vs Blackhawks in Chicago.

At the February 7th game against the New York Rangers, the Pittsburgh Penguins were proud to recognize Black History Month.

Former Woodland Hills High School graduate Armahn Ashley sang his trademark rendition of the National Anthem while standing with the Color Guard.

Arn Criswell, who began playing ice hockey with Pittsburgh ICE (Inclusion Creates Equality) and Pittsburgh Predators, and now goalie for Montour High School assumed the role of Junior Skater. Arn’s favorite hockey player is MarcAndre Fleury. To have the on-ice opportunity in CONSOL Energy Center, at a home game standing in the line-up with the Pittsburgh Penguins is a dream come true for Arn. The Pittsburgh Penguins are deeply honored to acknowledge the exceptional service of the Tuskegee Airmen and other African American veterans. Fans welcomed the veterans with standing ovations and rounds of applause for their courage, contribution, and essential role to our country.

The Penguins that didn’t travel to Sochi for the Olympics took advantage of their time off, with several traveling to much warmer climates.

“Got out of the Pittsburgh weather for a little while,” smiled defenseman Matt Niskanen, who went to the Bahamas. “Got some sun. Just mentally and physically to get that break at this time of year I think is the perfect time. Got to watch some entertaining hockey down in the Caribbean, that’s a pretty good combination.

So come back refreshed and get ready for the last 20 games or so before the playoff.”

Besides the hockey, Niskanen said he didn’t do anything special while he was there.

“Got a sunburn. That’s about it,” he joked.

The Caribbean was a popular spot for a few of the Penguins.

Niskanen, Craig Adams and Deryk Engelland all traveled there, as did Marc-Andre Fleury — who went with his wife Veronique, daughter Estelle and sister Marylene.

But those Penguins weren’t the only hockey players who flocked there.

“I saw [former Penguin and current Hurricane] Jordan Staal, he was at a different hotel,” Fleury said. “We just texted each other and were like oh yeah, our hotels are right beside each other. So that was good. Had dinner a couple times with him. ‘Addsy’ was there too, not too far away.”

The trip marked the first big family vacation for the Fleury’s with their baby Estelle, who turns a year old in April. And with how crazy the season has been these last few months, Marc-Andre was grateful for the break to get quality time with his daughter.

“It was good, and good to play dad a little more than I’ve done in the past while,” Fleury said. “It was fun, definitely different than my previous vacation[s]. But it was a good time, though.”

Fleury had handled a huge workload going into the Olympic break. He had started 47 of Pittsburgh’s 58 games (tied for second234

most in the NHL), recording a league-high 31 wins. That much playing time can take a toll, so Fleury was happy to abide by his 9-month-old baby’s schedule on their vacation, which consisted of a LOT of napping.

“The first few days, I was sleeping a lot. Napping and sleeping, so it was good. It was just mostly the baby’s schedule, I’d say,” Fleury smiled. “Ate, sleep. My sister was there so she babysat a few times. But mostly dinners. A few little excursions, like snorkeling. It was good.”

Estelle Fleury may have been sleeping a lot, but Sawyer Glass’ parents kept him on his East Coast schedule while they visited Lisbon, Portugal and London, England, which meant he was awake later than usual.

“We had our little guy and we kept him on east coast time, so he was going to bed at midnight,” Tanner Glass said. “So he was coming to dinners with us and all the waiters and waitresses were continued on page 236

really friendly with him and he was good, so he was a good baby to travel with. It worked out.”

Tanner and his wife Emily toted Sawyer around Lisbon with them, where they “did two days just kind of walking around the city, doing the sightseeing, touristy stuff around there. Checked out some restaurants.

“Then we did two one-day trips to little towns outside the city, little coastal villages, and kind of got immersed in the local culture that way.”

When the Glass family got to London to visit friends, they went to the Liverpool-Arsenal soccer match — which Tanner, a big Liverpool fan, said was an interesting experience, to say the least.

“It was really intense. Very intense,” he laughed. “The fans are just — everyone’s super knowledgeable and act like they know the game even if they maybe don’t. It was really cool to be a part of. We were sitting right in the middle of a really intense Arsenal section, so I kept my Liverpool jersey tucked away.”

While a lot of the guys took family vacations, James Neal and Robert Bortuzzo traveled to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico together.

“It was good, just relaxed,” Bortuzzo said. “We were in a house, so we could kind of just lay low and feel like you’re not doing anything.

Kind of just sit by the pool and relax and have fun. Played a lot of pingpong and swam and just relaxed and got away from it a bit.”

One of the highlights of their trip was a deep-sea fishing expedition.

“I’d never done that before,” Neal said. “It was an hour and 45 minutes out in the middle of the ocean and the fishing was really cool.

So it was something I always wanted to do and got to do it.”

Neal was quite successful his first time, catching a 300-pound marlin. However, he wouldn’t let Bortuzzo help him reel it in.

“He let me touch the rod for about five seconds,” Bortuzzo joked.

“So he was the one who reeled it in. That was pretty cool. We were all going to reel it in together, but all I got to do was touch the rod and see how hard it was pulling. We got a picture with it, so that was pretty cool. All that stuff was good.”

SPRING SKATE/ SKILLS Penguins Hockey Development’s Skate/Skills program provides your player with the extra skill development they need. Half the session is devoted to power skating, while the other half focuses on puck skills.

INSTRUCTIONAL 3-ON-3 Hockey is a game of creating opportunities in small spaces. Big Ice 3-on-3 leagues do not allow players to simulate these situations. This makes it easy for them to develop bad habits. In Penguins Hockey Development’s Cross Ice 3-on-3, the players will play on a third of the ice. This ensures that the puck will always be around them, while forcing them to make quick decisions. Goalies will get plenty of realistic shots, not just breakaway after breakaway.
