AROUND THE NHL They were an issue in the preseason, when suspensions were levied. And they’ll continue to be an issue as long as head shots remain legal in the NHL under certain circumstances. To more clearly define what is and is not considered illegal contact with an Brendan Shanahan, senior vice opponent’s head, the league has taken to president of NHL player safety and hockey operations. releasing videos with senior vice president of player safety Brendan Shanahan explaining the application of Rule 48.1, Illegal Check to the Head. The NHL Network broadcast one such Shanahan video between the second and third periods of a Penguins-Blackhawks preseason game on Sept. 30 in Chicago, this one explaining why Detroit’s Brendan Smith was suspended for the remainder of the preseason and for five regular-season games for a head shot on Chicago’s Ben Smith on Sept. 28 in Chicago. As Shanahan explained it, “A hit resulting in contact with an opponent’s head, where the head is targeted and the principal point of contact is not permitted.” Targeting, Shanahan said, “can be defined as either intentional or reckless.” Shanahan added, citing Rule 48.1, “…in determining whether such a hit should have been permitted, the circumstances of the hit, including whether the opponent put himself in a vulnerable position immediately prior to or simultaneously with the hit … can be considered. “It is also very important to note that Ben Smith was seriously injured on this play and Brendan Smith was assessed a match penalty.” Brendan Smith’s status as a first-time offender also factored into the discipline, Shanahan said in the video. Brendan Smith is now considered a repeat offender. The Shanahan videos are also available on NHL.com. The league handed out nine suspensions in the preseason, four for illegal hits to the head that cost the offenders a combined 15 regular-season games. Head shots may still be legal to a degree but they have never been more scrutinized.

CONFIDENCE.

STANDARD ON EVERY LEXUS.

“The Best-Retained Value Of Any Luxury Brand.” — Edmunds.com1

“The Best Overall Value Of Any Brand.” — IntelliChoice2

“Highest Customer Satisfaction With Dealer Service Among Luxury Brands.” — J.D. Power and Associates 3

There’s a fundamental difference between Lexus and every other luxury brand, and it comes down to this—confidence. Confidence in some of the finest automobiles ever built. And confidence in great value. Perhaps that explains why more people have chosen Lexus over any other luxury brand 11 years in a row.4 This is the luxury of confidence. This is the pursuit of perfection.

MARIO

LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 13th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. The Penguins entered the 2011-12 season having sold out 210 straight games (and counting) while setting new standards for local television ratings, merchandise sales, website traffic and social media. The ownership group also was proud to open the sparkling new CONSOL Energy Center last season — a state-of-the-art venue that was named Best NHL Arena in a survey of Sports Business Journal readers and was a finalist for Facility of the Year at the 2011 Sports Business Awards. Opening the doors of the arena in August, 2010, was the culmination of a 10-year quest by Lemieux and Burkle to ensure the long-term future of the Penguins in Pittsburgh. “Le Magnifique” was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. An immaculately gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033).

MARIOLEMIEUX

After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — thereby becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley.

RON

BURKLE CO-OWNER

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 13th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have developed one of the most outstanding ownership groups in all of professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. Burkle was proud to be on hand when the Penguins opened CONSOL Energy Center with their first regular season game against the Philadelphia Flyers on Oct. 7, 2010. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for four-plus seasons and finished in the top 10 (out of 122 pro teams) in ESPN the Magazine’s “Ultimate Standings” in each of the past three years. The Penguins reached the Stanley Cup Final back-to-back in 2008 and 2009 winning the Cup in 2009. The team’s financial strength has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign the team’s young core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.

DAVID

MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT

David Morehouse has quickly established himself as one of the most dynamic senior executives in the National Hockey League. Since being named President of the Penguins in April, 2007, Morehouse has reshaped the team’s image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010, and now oversees every aspect of the Penguins’ operations, reporting directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. Under Morehouse’s leadership, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in all of professional sports — ranked in the top 10 out of 122 pro teams in each of the past three years in ESPN The Magazine’s “Ultimate Standings.” The Penguins were named No. 3 overall out of 122 teams in Fan Relations in 2011. The team also was a finalist for Professional Sports Team of the Year at the 2011 Sports Business Awards, and the new CONSOL Energy Center was a finalist for Facility of the Year. The Penguins have sold out every game for four-plus seasons — a streak that had reached 210 games before the start of the 2011-12 season. They also have sold out all suites for three-plus seasons and set new standards for local TV ratings, website traffic, merchandise sales and social media. Morehouse himself was named 2011 CEO Communicator of the Year by the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. Morehouse attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have three children and live in Sewickley Heights.

RAY

SHERO EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & GENERAL MANAGER

Ray Shero, 49, is at the vanguard of the NHL’s new breed of general managers — steeped in family hockey tradition but on the cutting-edge of new technology and modernization in hockey operations, player relations and team management. Shero was named GM of the Penguins in May, 2006, and his fresh ideas, family-friendly environment and calm but firm management style helped transform a franchise that did not qualify for the playoffs from 2002-06 into one that regularly challenges for the Stanley Cup — reaching the Final in 2008 and winning the Cup in 2009. He’s been especially proactive in keeping the core of the team together, signing Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal, Brooks Orpik and Kris Letang, among others, to longterm contracts. One of his most successful moves came behind the bench during the 2008-09 season, when he promoted Dan Bylsma to head coach on Feb. 15, 2009. Bylsma went on to lead the Penguins to the Stanley Cup in 2009 and then won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s “Most Outstanding Coach” in 2011. Ray’s father, Fred, won two Stanley Cups as head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers in 1974-75, and the Sheros are one of the few father-son tandems to have their names on the Stanley Cup. Ray built his managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University, twice serving as team captain, and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the move to the front office. The native of St. Paul, Minn., is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

JASON

BOTTERILL ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER

Jason Botterill is in his third full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position in May, 2009, by GM Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockey-related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top minor-league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 35, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins; his responsibilities included salary cap management, professional and amateur scouting and overseeing prospect development. Botterill’s avant-garde approach and understanding of the salary cap has been a major asset for the Penguins. Before joining the Pittsburgh organization, he worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in 1994 and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. He also played 393 career games in the AHL and IHL, recording 127 goals and 257 points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996 and won gold medals in all three tournaments. Following his playing career, he returned to the University of Michigan to earn his MBA. He resides in Pittsburgh with his wife, Andrea.

DAN

BYLSMA HEAD COACH

Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history, leading the team to a Stanley Cup title and winning the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s “Most Outstanding Coach” in just two-plus years behind the bench. With Pittsburgh, Bylsma has recorded back-to-back 100-point seasons, has the best regular-season winning percentage (.653) in team history and is the winningest playoff coach in franchise history with 26 playoff victories and five (tied-Scotty Bowman) series victories. All-time under Bylsma, the Penguins boast a 114-56-19 regular season record, making him the third-winningest coach in team history. He is also the fifthfastest head coach in NHL history to hit the 100-win mark (163 games). Bylsma, who signed a three-year contract extension through the 2013-14 season, won the 2011 Jack Adams Award after a masterful coaching performance last year, steering the injury-depleted Penguins to a 49-25-8 record for 106 points (the 49 wins and 106 points both rank second in franchise history) and tied Philadelphia in points for the Atlantic Division title. The Penguins were in contention for the conference and division titles heading into the final weekend of the regular season despite the fact that the team suffered 350 man-games lost — including 119 games to the team’s three best players: Sidney Crosby (41 games); Evgeni Malkin (39); and Jordan Staal (39). Bylsma also directed the Penguins to a 12-game winning streak, tying for second-best in franchise history, and a 15-game unbeaten streak. Pittsburgh posted a 24-11-6 road record for 54 points. The team’s 54 road points are a new franchise record, while its 24 road wins tie for the team record (1992-93). In 2009-10 Bylsma completed his first full NHL season behind the bench for Pittsburgh, leading the club to a 47-28-7 record for 101 points and finishing only two points behind New Jersey for the Atlantic Division title. Under Bylsma’s leadership the Penguins set many milestones during the season, including tying a team record with seven straight road victories, becoming the second-fastest team in franchise history to 40

28

wins (66 games) and totaling the fourth-most wins (tied) in a season (47). Bylsma began the 2008-09 season with the first head coaching assignment of his career — with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. He ended it by hoisting the Stanley Cup. In between, Bylsma authored one of the most spectacular coaching stories in the history of professional hockey. The Grand Haven, Mich. native was promoted to Pittsburgh on Feb. 15, 2009, and took over a club that was 10th overall in the Eastern Conference standings and facing questions as to whether a playoff berth was even a practical option. But he accepted the challenge with his trademark optimism, passion and raw determination. Unleashing a swift, skilled team that was built to go on the attack, imploring his players to “play on their toes, not on their heels,” Bylsma led the Penguins to an 18-3-4 record in 25 games, rising from 10th place to fourth in the conference and garnering not only a playoff spot, but home-ice advantage in the first round. In the playoffs, Bylsma’s team showed a steely resolve, clinching all four series on the road and twice rallying from 2-0 series deficits (against Washington in the second round and Detroit in the Stanley Cup Final). The Penguins beat the defending champion Red Wings four times in the last five games to claim the Cup, including a nerve-racking Game Seven at Detroit’s Joe Louis Arena and became the first team in professional sports since 1979 to win Game Seven of a championship round on the road. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim. He began his coaching career as an assistant with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks of the AHL in 2004-05 and made his NHL coaching debut as an assistant with the New York Islanders in 2005-06. Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh. He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son, Bryan, and reside in the North Hills.

TONY

GRANATO ASSISTANT COACH

Tony Granato is in his third season on the Penguins’ coaching staff. Granato, among his many responsibilities, works with the Penguins’ forwards and penalty killing units. He oversaw the NHL’s No. 1-ranked penalty killing group with an 86.1-percent success rate in 2010-11. Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato spent six seasons behind the bench for the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach from 2002-04 and 2008-09. Granato compiled a 104-78-17-16 record and led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003. Granato, 46, joined the Avalanche organization in June, 2002, as an assistant coach. He was elevated to head coach on Dec. 18, 2002 and led the club to a 32-11-4-4 mark en route to its ninth consecutive division title. The following season Granato steered the Avalanche to a 40-22-13-7 finish and an appearance in the Western Conference semifinals. The Downers Grove, Illinois native served as an assistant coach for the Avalanche from 2005-08. Granato was promoted to his second tenure as the club’s head coach in 2008-09 and oversaw the development of a young Colorado team. Granato played 13 seasons in the NHL with the NY Rangers (1988-90), Los Angeles (1990-96) and San Jose (1996-2001). In 1997, he played in the NHL All-Star Game and was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for overcoming a near career-ending brain injury. In 773 career games, the feisty forward posted 248 goals, 492 points and 1,425 penalty minutes. He tallied 16 goals, 43 points and 141 penalty minutes in 79 career postseason games and helped lead Los Angeles to a Stanley Cup Final berth in 1993. Granato played four years at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgers’ Hall of Fame in 2000. Granato also played for the U.S. National team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary. Tony and his wife, Linda, are the parents of four children and reside in the South Hills.

TODD

REIRDEN ASSISTANT COACH

Todd Reirden is in his second season as an assistant coach with the Penguins, joining Pittsburgh’s coaching staff on July 31, 2010 after coaching with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the previous two seasons. Reirden, an NHL blueliner for parts of five seasons, works closely with the team’s defensemen. Under his guidance the Penguins defense ranked sixth (tied) in the NHL in 2010-11 in goals-against average (2.39) and surrendered only 196 goals (a 39-goal improvement from 2009-10). Reirden, 39, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 2009-10, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and earning a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs. Reirden joined the Penguins organization August 18, 2008 as an assistant coach in WB/S. A few months later he was promoted to interim head coach following Dan Bylsma’s promotion to Pittsburgh in February 2009. Reirden guided WB/S to a 14-9-3 mark in the final 26 games, and advanced to the second round of the AHL playoffs. Reirden then joined Pittsburgh’s extended playoff coaching staff and helped the team win the Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with the Bowling Green Falcons (CCHA) — his alma mater. He was a teammate of Bylsma’s during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons at Bowling Green. Selected by New Jersey in the 12th round (242nd overall) of the 1990 NHL Draft, Reirden played professionally for 13 seasons, retiring after the 2006-07 campaign with Graz EC of the Austrian Hockey League. He appeared in 183 NHL games with Edmonton, St. Louis, Atlanta and Phoenix, recording 46 points (11G-35A) and 181 penalty minutes. Todd and his wife, Shelby, have one son.

GILLES

MELOCHE GOALTENDING COACH

Former NHL goaltender Gilles Meloche is in his sixth season as the Penguins’ full-time goaltending coach and 26th overall with the organization, winning three Stanley Cups with the franchise. Meloche has been instrumental in the development of Marc-Andre Fleury into a Stanley Cup-winning netminder. Meloche, 60, served as a Penguins scout from 1989-2006 and also doubled as a goaltending coach/consultant during much of that time. He was part of the staff when the Penguins won Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. A native of Montreal, Quebec, Meloche spent 18 seasons as an NHL goaltender with Chicago, California, Cleveland, Minnesota and Pittsburgh. MIKE LANGE PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 36th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM “The X”. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

PHIL BOURQUE PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK COLOR ANALYST

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his eighth season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT Sports’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or Icetime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts “Bob Grove’s Hot Stove” on Penguins Radio 24/7.

Mears came to the Penguins in September of 2009 after spending three seasons as the radio play-by-play voice of the New York Islanders. Prior to his time in New York, he spent four seasons as the director of media relations and broadcasting for the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs of the Central Hockey League. In 2005, he was named “CHL Broadcaster of the Year.” In addition to his radio work, he has also done various game broadcasts for Leafs TV and MSG television networks. A graduate of Franklin Regional High School, Mears grew up in Murrysville, PA and earned a degree in broadcasting from Bowling Green State University in 2002 while serving as the play-by-play voice of the BGSU Falcons. RULES OF THE GAME PRESENTED BY

BOARDING NEW NHL RULE CHANGE FOR 2011.12 BOARDING

To check or push a defenseless opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to hit or impact into the boards dangerously or violently.

-

The player applying the check needs to ensure his opponent is not in a defenseless position and if so, must avoid contact.

-

The player with the puck needs to avoid placing himself in a dangerous and defenseless position.

-

Any unnecessary contact with a player playing the puck on an obvious “icing” or “off-sides” play that does not impact boards should be treated as “charging.”

DELAY OF GAME A player may be penalized when, in the opinion of the Referee, is delaying the game in any matter. (Normally six conditions) 1.) Player or goaltender intentionally shoots or throws the puck out

of the playing area. 2.) A defensive player or goaltender in the defensive zone shoots

the puck directly (without being deflected) over the glass. 3.) A player or goaltender intentionally knocks the net’s goalpost off

its moorings, which stops the play. 4.) The goaltender plays the puck out of the trapezoid behind the net. 5.) The goaltender freezes the puck rather than passing it to a

teammate when no player on the opposing team is within sufficient distance to apply offensive pressure. 6.) Any skater other than the goaltender who uses their hands to

make the puck unplayable.

INTERFERENCE INTERFERENCE

BODY POSITION: Body position will be determined as the player skating in front of or beside his opponent, traveling in the same direction. - A player who is behind an opponent, who does not have the puck, may not use his stick, body or free hand in order to restrain his opponent. POSSESSION OF THE PUCK: The last player to touch the puck, other than the goaltenders, will be considered the player in possession. RESTRAIN: The actions of a player or goaltender who does not have body position, but instead uses illegal means to impede an opponent who is not in possession of the puck. PICK: The action of a player or goaltender who checks an opponent who is not in possession of the puck and is unaware of the impending check/hit. FREE HAND: When a free hand is used to hold, pull, tug, grab or physically restrain an opponent from moving freely, this must be penalized as holding. STICK: A player who does not have body position on his opponent, who used his stick to impede or prevent his opponent from moving freely on the ice shall be assessed a hooking penalty.

OFF-SIDES Players of the attacking team must not precede the puck into the attacking zone. (Two determining factors) 1.) One of a player’s skates is not in contact with or behind the blue

line of the attacking zone before the puck enters that zone. 2.) The puck must completely cross the edge of the blue line nearest

the attacking zone to be considered inside the attacking zone.

The act of using the stick in a manner that enables a player to restrain an opponent.

-

When a player is checking another in such a way that there is only stick-to-stick contact, such action is not to be penalized as hooking.

JOIN THE RUSH!

TM

Introduced in the mid 1990’s, the American Eagle Student Rush Program is one of the most popular and well known marketing initiatives of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Designed to sell remaining game-day inventory, the American Eagle Student Rush program provides the Pittsburgh Penguins an opportunity to introduce new fans to the game of hockey at a discounted rate. Based upon the positive feedback the organization has received from current season ticket holders who were one-time Student Rush participants, the program has been successful in developing a long-term relationship with young, active Pittsburghers. During the 2011-12 season, at least 200 American Eagle Student Rush tickets will be made available for each regular season home game at CONSOL Energy Center. To avoid long waits outside during the winter months, the organization will host online pre-sales for most games. To receive pre-sale information, students can text “RUSH” to 32623 to register for the American Eagle Student Rush Mobile Club. Each pre-game text includes the opportunity to win two free tickets to the next home game! In addition to the 200 tickets offered each game, five special Student Rush nights will be held. At least 500 student rush tickets will be available for these select games at the American Eagle Gate. Music, prizes and giveaways will also be provided courtesy of American Eagle Outfitters. The special nights include:

• Thursday, October 20 vs. Montreal Canadiens – 7:00 pm • Tuesday, November 15 vs. Colorado Avalanche – 7:30 pm • Wednesday, February 15 vs. Anaheim Ducks – 7:00 pm • Friday, March 9 vs. Florida Panthers – 7:00 pm • Tuesday, March 27 vs. New York Islanders – 7:00 pm For more on the American Eagle Student Rush program, please visit www.pittsburghpenguins.com/studentrush

GAME NOTES By: Bob Grove

Marc-Andre Fleury went 2-0-0 with a .952 save percentage against the Florida Panthers last season.

THE SERIES The Penguins play their home opener tonight against the Florida Panthers, a team they have dominated in recent seasons. Pittsburgh is 14-4-0 in its last 18 games against Florida and has won each of the last four meetings. . . The Penguins are 8-1-0 in their last nine home games against the Panthers and have won five straight home games in the series — their longest home winning streak ever against Florida. Four of those five games went beyond regulation. . . Pittsburgh’s last loss to Florida came Jan. 3, 2010 at Florida (2-6), and the last home loss to the Panthers came on Jan. 3, 2009 (1-6). . . Pittsburgh has held the Panthers to two or fewer goals in seven of the last eight games. Still, it hasn’t been easy for the Penguins; five of their last seven victories over Florida have been by a single goal. . . The Penguins have killed 16 consecutive penalties against Florida. . . The Penguins have won each of the last six games between the teams to be decided after regulation, including three in overtime. The last time the Panthers beat the Penguins beyond regulation was Oct. 25, 2005, a 4-3 overtime victory here on a Stephen Weiss goal. . . Ben Lovejoy had two goals and three points in four games against Florida last season, while Marc-Andre Fleury went 2-0-0 with a 1.66 goals-against average and .952 save percentage. 3-1-0 in his last four home decisions against the Panthers. . . Evgeni Malkin is 4-14-18 in 18 career games against Florida but has only one goal in his last seven games against the Panthers. . . The teams’ next meeting is Nov. 19 in Florida, and their next game here is March 9. . . The Penguins are 35-27-4-3 alltime against Florida, including a 20-11-3-1 mark here at home.

Tonight’s game is being played on the 44th anniversary of the first game in Penguins’ history, a 2-1 home loss to Montreal on Oct. 11, 1967. Andy Bathgate scored the first goal in team history at 7:06 of the third period, and Jean Beliveau scored the gamewinner — his 400th NHL goal. . . The two new faces on the Pittsburgh roster this season are left wing Steve Sullivan and center Richard Park, both signed as free agents this summer. . . Sullivan has spent the previous six and a half seasons in Nashville and is expected to be a critical addition to the power play. . . Park was drafted in the second round by the Penguins in 1994 and began his NHL career with Pittsburgh in the 1995-96 season. He had a goal and an assist — both short-handed — in his first NHL game at the Mellon Arena on Oct. 7, 1995 in an 8-3 win over Toronto.

It has been 14 years and 7 months between games in a Pittsburgh uniform for Park — the longest such stretch in team history. Previously, that designation belonged to Mark Recchi (13 years, 8 months). . . The Penguins opened the season with three road games in Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton. This is the first of three consecutive home games for Pittsburgh, which will host Washington on Thursday night and Buffalo Saturday night. . . Sidney Crosby and Dustin Jeffrey both began the season on injured reserve. . . The Penguins have lost two of their last three home openers, falling to Philadelphia last season (2-3) and to New Jersey (1-2 OT) in 2008. . . This is the first time the Penguins have ever opened their home schedule against the Panthers . . . Brooks Orpik missed the Penguins’ season-opener against the Canucks as he continued to recover from off-season hernia surgery.

Florida finished last in the Eastern Conference last season and has missed the playoffs for an NHL-record 10 consecutive seasons, but GM Dale Tallon — a former Penguin — set out to turn that around this summer by signing a number of free agents: Jose Theodore, Tomas Fleischmann, Scotty Upshall, former Penguin Matt Bradley, Sean Bergenheim and Ed Jovanovski. He also traded for Brian Campbell, Tomas Kopecky and Kris Versteeg and hired Kevin Dineen as his new coach to replace Peter DeBoer. “The million-dollar Florida Panthers GM Dale Tallon question is how does this played for the Penguins for two seasons from 1978-1980. thing all come together. I’m anxious to see it,’’ Tallon told the Miami Herald. “I saw flashes of brilliance in some of the preseason games.”. . . Florida opened the season Saturday on the road against the New York Islanders and after tonight’s game will be off until returning home to host Tampa Bay on Saturday. The Panthers play seven of their first 10 games on the road.

DEFENSIVE INDIFFERENCE? MAYBE NOT By: Robert Edward Healy, III

Defense wins championships. Just not … scoring championships. The Penguins have had four players win 13 Art Ross Trophies as the NHL’s annual leading scorer, and the team takes the unusual step of commemorating those players on banners that hang from the rafters at CONSOL Energy Center. For the Penguins, though, scoring titles are anything but unusual, as Pittsburgh has won more Art Ross Trophies than any other team in league history. The Penguins have also had three players — all forwards — earn five Hart Trophies as league MVP and have paid homage to that award in CONSOL’s rafters, as well. But for top defenders in the history of the Penguins, there are no banners. Except for those three Stanley Cup ones, of course. “It’s kind of cliché, but defense wins championships,” defenseman Deryk Engelland said. “The guys we have in this room, no matter who it is, really pride themselves on having good D coverage and goalsagainst. And to top it off, we have some great goaltending, so that helps a lot, too.”

Pittsburgh has won more Art Ross Trophies than any other team in league history.

94

The Penguins have had one player win the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the league’s top defenseman (Randy Carlyle in 1981). Even then, Carlyle’s offense — 83 points from the blue line that season — probably had as much to do with that Norris win as his defense did. Still, there’s no banner at CONSOL Energy Center for Carlyle. So how does a defender get his name on a banner? Simple: Last season, Marc-Andre Fleury was considered by many experts to be a top Win the Hart Trophy. contender for the Hart Trophy. That’s easier said than done, but a defensive player getting the same treatment as a Penguins’ scoring legend was close to becoming a reality last season. Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury was considered to be a top contender for the 2011 Hart Trophy by many experts. And while he didn’t win the league’s MVP award, Fleury was the obvious pick as team MVP after putting together his finest season to date. “He was awesome the whole year,” Engelland said. “He was a huge part of our winning, especially when we lost our [top forwards].” “With all of the guys going down and missing that many games, [Fleury] had to buckle down and make some key saves,” forward Pascal Dupuis said. “And he really did that for us.” Fleury rebounded from a rocky start last season to finish with a 36-20-5 record, a .918 save percentage and a career-best 2.32 goals-against average. With Malkin and Crosby out for almost and exactly half, respectively, of last season with injuries, Fleury was never needed more. And he never played better. continued on page 97

He even went 15-1-1 during one impressive stretch. “When you have 106 [team] points in the regular season, a lot of people need to play well,” defenseman Ben Lovejoy said. “But there were nights that he [Fleury] carried us on his back, and he was clearly our MVP.” As a team, the Penguins finished seventh out of 30 NHL clubs in goals-against last season, up from 18th in both 2008-09 and 2009-10. Newcomers Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek joined Brooks Orpik and Kris Letang to bolster the team’s defense, and the Penguins’ yearly NHL awards candidates, for once, were not goal-scorers but goal-preventers. And while Fleury had a run at the Hart, Letang’s case for the Norris was believed by some to be an even stronger one. Letang was the lone defenseman to play in all 82 games for the Penguins last season, and he finished with a plus-15 rating while routinely being matched up against other teams’ top scorers. He also led the Penguins with 42 assists while finishing second on the club with 50 points. “As a defensive unit, you love it when you see a guy like Kris Letang,” Johnson said. “He can play both ends of the ice. He can be on the forecheck, and next thing you know, he’s back and breaking up a play.

Kris Letang is an offensive defenseman who can play well on both ends of the ice. continued on page 98

“You need some offense from your defensemen too, and he can bring it from both areas of the ice.” With just one Norris winner in team history, perhaps a defensive banner isn’t called for at CONSOL Energy Center just yet. But if Letang were to join the ranks, what would the players think then of some recognition for the D? “If someone wins it in here, it’s a huge accomplishment and a great thing for them,” Engelland said. “Whoever wins it I’m sure will be Even though it’s a cliche, Deryk Engelland believes that defense wins championships. happy that they get it, and they’ll want, next season, to do it again.” Fleury agreed that there should be a Norris banner at CONSOL Energy Center should one of his teammates win the award, but stressed that joining the list of Hart winners already hanging there is not something that he worries about. “It’s possible,” he said, “but I’m not starting the season thinking about winning the Hart Trophy. “I go into the first game and try to win that game, and that’s it. I’m not thinking about picking up trophies. I just want to try to win as often as possible.” Added Lovejoy about a Penguin winning the Norris, “It would certainly be a very cool thing, but I think that everyone in the room would rather win the Stanley Cup. You don’t grow up dreaming of winning the Norris Trophy; you dream of your team winning the Stanley Cup.” So perhaps a Norris banner at CONSOL Energy Center can wait, especially if a fourth Stanley Cup banner goes up instead.

I feel

.

Ask a grieving child how they’re feeling and you may get a lot of answers. Or none at all. For many, finding the words to express their feelings can be difficult. But while finding the right words may not be easy, finding the right place to turn to for help can be. At the Caring Place, we’re here when grieving children need someone to listen, to talk, or to just sit and be. For more information about one of our peer support groups or to volunteer, call us today.

LITTLE PENGUINS LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY Sidney Crosby and his family wanted to help parents introduce their kids to the game of hockey — and to do it without having to incur a prohibitive up-front cost. The result is the Little Penguins Learn to Play Hockey program — a tremendous, one-of-a-kind opportunity for kids aged 4-7 to receive free head-to-toe hockey equipment and 10 sessions of on-ice instruction. The 2011-12 season will be the fourth consecutive year for the Little Penguins program, which continues to grow. Last season twenty-one rinks hosted the program and four girls-only locations were added. This season, even more rinks will serve as Little Penguins partners! Since the program began, over 2,000 youngsters have received equipment and learned to play hockey. This season another 1,000 kids will have the opportunity to receive free gear and learn the game. Thanks to the combined efforts of Crosby, the Penguins, Reebok and Dick’s Sporting Goods, all participants receive full sets of Reebok SC87 Crosby-endorsed equipment, including skates, stick, helmet, gloves, pants, shoulder pads, shin pads, elbow pads and an equipment bag, as well as an official Little Penguins jersey and Little Penguins helmet stickers. After a high profile promotional period early in the season, the program sells out quickly when registration takes place online. During this promotion, parents may view information regarding participating rinks, starting dates, and times of instructional sessions, which are listed on the Penguins’ website prior to the registration date. “We were both excited and amazed by the reaction to the Little Penguins program in previous seasons, and we’re happy to be able

128

to offer the program again for another year,” Crosby said. “The goal is to continue to create opportunities for more kids in the Pittsburgh area to take up hockey. With the Little Penguins program, they can receive head-to-toe hockey equipment and learn the game in a fun and organized way.” “It’s a tribute to Sid and his family that they want to reach out and create this incredible opportunity for children in the Pittsburgh area,” said Penguins CEO and president David Morehouse. “One of their goals was to help parents by providing free head-to-toe hockey equipment to properly equip their children. The Penguins are honored to join Reebok and Dick’s Sporting Goods in supporting Sid and this great program.” Local rinks participating in the program this year include the Airport Ice Arena in Moon Township, the Belmont Ice Complex in Kittanning, the Bladerunners Ice Arenas in Bethel Park, Harmarville and Warrendale, Center Ice Arena in Delmont, Galactic Ice in Altoona, the Hess Ice Arena in New Castle, the Ice Castle in Castle Shannon, Iceoplex at Southpointe, the Ice Connection in Valencia, the Ice Garden-Rostraver in Belle Vernon, the Ice Mine in Connellsville, the Ice Zone in Youngstown, Kirk-Nevin Ice Arena in Greensburg, the Mt. Lebanon Recreation Center, the Morgantown Municipal Ice Arena, the North Central Recreation Center in Ebensburg, the RMU Island Sports Center on Neville Island, the S&T Bank Arena in Indiana, the Valley Sports arena in New Kensington and Wheeling Park. For additional information on this special program, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com and select Amateur Hockey under the Community tab.

ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture “Sudden Death.” He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. In addition to his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game, Iceburgh makes annual appearances at the Mascot Olympics held in Orlando, FL. If you would like to request an Iceburgh appearance at your next event, please complete the online form by visiting the community section of pittsburghpenguins.com.

GIRL’S HOCKEY DAY By: Mark Boyle

A group of young girls was given the opportunity to see what the game of hockey is all about during a one-day practice in October.

It was a great day for hockey — Girls Hockey. On Saturday, October 1st, a group of girls ages 10 to 14 participated in a Girls Only Learn to Play Hockey program at Blade Runners in Warrendale, hosted by the North Pittsburgh Wildcats. This was a one-day practice that gave girls who had never played on a team before the chance to see what ice hockey is all about. For those who had played before, this was a day to show off their skills and have fun. “It’s an initiative to get girls in the game,” Donna Ledwin, coordinator of Girls Hockey, said. “We’re trying to do our part and grow the game for the girls.” The players lined up on the goal line as their instructor set off towards the other end of the ice. “Glide with your left foot,” she said, her voice echoing throughout the rink. The skaters followed her lead as each girl glided down the ice using only her left foot to move, keeping the right one pointed straight ahead. They repeated this exercise a few times before they incorporated both feet to get a feel of how to skate down the ice. Some of the athletes were excelling at this, but those who were struggling had help from older, experienced hockey players. These experienced players demonstrated how to quickly come to a stop by turning their heels out, something the younger players were eager to try. continued on page 146

continued from page 145

As the hour went on, the girls got faster and more confident as they propelled down the ice, getting ready to work on their puck handling. They skated down the ice in pairs, practicing their passing to one another. But now that the drills were over, the real fun began as the girls got the chance to partake in cross ice game. “It was fun,” Megan McDermott, a 12-year-old skater, said. “I liked that we got to play games, There were cheers all around at the end of a fun day. and it was all girls.” To end the day, the girls lined up in the neutral zone and one by one took off towards the opposite end of the ice where an instructor stood with his hands on the glass, giving the girls just enough space to slide under him. The first girl to slide under then got up and stood next to the instructor, putting her hands on the glass, making a tunnel that the next girl would have to slide through. This was McDermott’s favorite part of the day, and it was clear from the others’ reactions and cheers that this was a great way to end practice. “We’d love to see the girls at our tryouts,” Ledwin said. “We want to get them in the game.” And it is a fast-moving game, which is enticing to a lot of players. “What I like best about hockey is that it doesn’t take forever,” The girls got faster and more confident McDermott said. “It’s not like as they propelled down the ice softball. You get more playing time.” working on their puck handling.

PLAYERS REUNITE ON THE LINKS By: Kaitlin Zurawsky

The Penguins held their annual Summer Sticks Golf Classic presented by ReedSmith at the Allegheny Country Club in Sewickley on September 14. The event signifies the transition from the end of the offseason into the beginning of training camp. The sun shined as each player and coach captained a foursome in a scramblestyle tournament benefitting the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. For forward Jordan Staal, who was ruled out for the start of the season around this time last year with a foot injury, the event was particularly relevant. “This day is always fun and it’s nice to hang out with “This day is always kind of some good people in Pittsburgh.” ~ Jordan Staal a reminder of things starting up again,” Staal said. “This day is always fun and it’s nice to hang out with some good people in Pittsburgh.” For the newest members of the Penguins organization, the tournament was a good time to become acclimated as it marks the first organized gathering of all the players and staff. Forward Steve Sullivan — who came to Pittsburgh from Nashville — had been getting to know his teammates through workouts, but Summer Sticks was his first official event as a Penguin. “Getting to meet the guys has been really good, so I’m glad I came in early,” Sullivan said. “We’re going to have a little bit of fun today and enjoy the day knowing that camp starts in a couple of days.” continued on page 150

149

continued from page 149

Forward Steve MacIntyre, who came to the Penguins from the Edmonton Oilers, looked forward to playing golf with his new teammates and meeting new people. “It’s a tremendous opportunity to get out there, meet people in the community and spend time with some teammates,” he said. “You get to know them and show off your golf game — or lack of.” Head coach Dan Bylsma stayed in Pittsburgh for a large chunk of time this summer, so he was able to practice on the course where Summer Sticks took place before the actual event. “On a scramble my goal is to get my name announced somewhere today,” Bylsma said. “Whether my team wins or gets close to the pin, you just have to get some acknowledgement for your golf game.” “One more [Thursday] before I put the clubs away for the rest of the year.” ~ Dan Bylsma Training camp started just two days later. And for the players and coaching staff, September 14 marked one of the last days of golf until next summer — and they were more than ready to trade in their clubs for some skates. “One more [Thursday] before I put the clubs away for the rest of the year,” Bylsma said.

PROUD HISTORY, BRIGHT FUTURE By: Mike Prisuta

It was on display on, of all places, a golf course, what the Penguins have become. The occasion was a reunion of the 1990-91 Stanley Cup champions, the first of three such titles in Pittsburgh franchise history. That alone stands as a signature endorsing how far the Penguins have come from the days when flirting with bankruptcy was an unavoidable fact of life. But even more revealing was the event’s alumni representation. Joey Mullen was there, but so, too, was Dennis Owchar. There was Ronnie Francis, but also Francois Leroux and Pierre Larouche. Mario Lemieux and Larry Murphy were on hand, and so was Greg Malone. It didn’t matter if the uniform of the day back in the day had been blue & white or black & gold, or even both for those representing Penguins of a more recent vintage such as current head coach Dan Bylsma and current assistant coach Tony Granato.

155

Mullen is an assistant coach with Philadelphia this season, Malone the head pro scout in Tampa Bay and Francis the director of hockey operations for Carolina. But on this day it was as if they’d never left. The Penguins have become that type of family, one that represents what looks suspiciously like a storied franchise. “It feels that way,” Bylsma agreed. “It feels that way when you become a Penguin. And then when you get into the organization and you see, on a day like this with your team and you see all these players, the Hall-of-Famers, the unbelievable hockey players, not to mention their best hockey player. RON FRANCIS “It definitely feels like a storied director of hockey operations for Carolina franchise. Compared to the other experiences I’ve had it certainly is a storied franchise with a great deal of history.” With such pedigree comes expectation, and the Penguins are no exception. Even with Sidney Crosby’s status regarding an eventual return from concussion still unresolved as the Penguins left for a seasonopening, three-game road trip to Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton they were being identified as contenders if not potential or even eventual champions by a variety of publications and prognostications. Scott Burnside of ESPN.com went as far as to predict a fourth Cup on the immediate horizon, anticipating a Penguins-Chicago Blackhawks Stanley Cup Final in 2012 with the Penguins ultimately prevailing. ESPN The Magazine called it as San Jose over Pittsburgh in the Final. E.J. Hradek and Dan Rosen of NHL.com likewise picked the Penguins to win the Eastern Conference (no Stanley Cup predictions have been forthcoming as yet from those two). continued on page 158

THEY EXPECT NO LESS FROM THEMSELVES AS TEAMMATES, FROM THE GROUP AS A TEAM AND FOR THOSE WHO BUY THE TICKETS AND THE JERSEYS AND MAKE THE CONSOL ENERGY CENTER COME TO LIFE ON A HOCKEY NIGHT IN PITTSBURGH. The Sporting News also predicted the Penguins would win the Eastern Conference before falling to the Sharks in the Final, and summed up Bylsma’s team thusly: “The Penguins managed to find ways to win without Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin last season. Now that Malkin is ready, getting Crosby back healthy would immediately make the Penguins the favorite to win the Eastern Conference, if not the Stanley Cup.” No, it isn’t just in Western Pennsylvania or throughout Penguins Nation that this team, this organization, this franchise is held in such high regard. Such plaudits are preferable to being labeled prime contenders for the draft lottery. But with such respect comes pressure to perform. That’s what a storied franchise does and that’s how a storied franchise is defined. The Penguins are well aware of such parameters. They know and understand that recognition of who they are comes with an implied understanding of what they should become. It’s nothing the players and coaches intend to either cite or hide from. They expect no less from themselves as teammates, from the group as a team and for those who buy the tickets and the jerseys and make the CONSOL Energy Center come to life on a Hockey Night in Pittsburgh. “I think it’s pretty high,” Bylsma said of the standard to which the franchise now annually holds itself accountable. “I think the expectation that we’re going to compete for a Stanley Cup, that’s the type of organization that we have, the type of players that we have, the type of team that we have. I think it’s pretty high and I think that’s an understanding of the quality of our organization. “It’s not just about the players; it’s about the organization and the team. Certainly the players that are a part of that make it such.”

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

JIM PAEK By: Jason Seidling

When defenseman Jim Paek debuted with the Penguins against the New York Islanders on Oct. 13, 1990 at Nassau County Coliseum, the Seoul, South Korea native became the first Koreanborn player to skate in the National Hockey League. Although he played a majority of the 1990-91 season with the Canadian National team, Paek rejoined the Penguins during the postseason, appearing in eight games while helping the team capture its first-ever Stanley Cup championship against Minnesota. In the series-clinching game against the North Stars, Paek scored his first-ever NHL goal in the Penguins’ 8-0 victory on May 25, 1991. Paek became a NHL regular the following season, earning the team’s rookie of the year award, as the Penguins won the Cup again. His best season with the team came in ‘92-93 when he established career highs in games played (77), goals (3), assists (15) and points (18) while helping Pittsburgh claim the Presidents’ Trophy as the NHL’s top regular-season team. Paek played with the Penguins until February 1994 when he was traded to the Los Angeles Kings with Marty McSorley in exchange for Tomas Sandstrom and Shawn McEachern. He finished his NHL career with the Ottawa Senators in ‘94-95, before splitting the final eight years of his playing career between the now-defunct International Hockey League and Great Britain’s top professional league. Now 44, Paek lives in Michigan with his wife, Kortney, and the couple’s two children, Megan and Kyler. He is entering his seventh year as an assistant coach with the Detroit Red Wings’ top minor-league affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League. During the 2007-08 season he lifted the Stanley Cup for a third time while coaching Detroit’s ‘Black Aces’ taxi squad during its Cup run, which ironically came against the Penguins. We caught up with Paek when he visited Pittsburgh earlier this summer for a reunion of the ’91 Cup team:

164

WHAT MADE THE ‘91 TEAM SPECIAL? That’s something you can’t put into one word. Starting from the top with Craig (Patrick) down to Bob (Johnson) and on through Mario (Lemieux) — it was a real special team where every piece fit the puzzle. YOU CALL BOB JOHNSON YOUR HOCKEY HERO. WHAT WAS YOUR FONDEST MEMORY OF HIM? One day ‘Badger’ stopped me in

an elevator and said, “Jim, every day you have to set goals for yourself.” That really stuck with me. I still set goals to help me improve every day. WHAT MADE JOHNSON SO SPECIAL? He treated everyone as

equals. He talked to everyone on the same level. That made you want to play well for him and succeed. He was just a fantastic man. WHEN DID IT HIT YOU THAT YOU GUYS WERE GOOD ENOUGH TO WIN THE CUP? When Mario stood up and said “let’s go boys” during

the Cup Final against Minnesota. You knew he wanted to win badly. That made us all want to win for him because of what he meant to the team and what he had gone through. That was the kind of impact he had on his teammates. WHO HAD THE BEST HAIR ON THOSE EARLY ‘90S TEAMS? I have

to say me because I don’t know if you’ve ever seen a Korean with curly, shoulder-length hair. I shouldn’t be saying this, but I could put it into a pony tail if I wanted to and it looked fantastic! My current players like to look back on my old hockey cards. One of them last year went dressed for Halloween as Jim Paek — mullet included! WHAT DO YOUR KIDS DO TO KEEP YOU BUSY? My son, Kyler,

recently started to play hockey. My daughter, Megan, is very artistic and is a tennis player. CAN YOU DESCRIBE WHAT IT’S LIKE FOR YOU ANYTIME YOU VISIT PITTSBURGH? It’s always fantastic because I have a lot of good

memories and made a lot of great friends. It’s amazing that when you come back to the city, the people still remember your name. That makes you feel very warm inside. People always thank you for that season – that tells you a lot about the people here. IN ADDITION TO COACHING IN THE AHL, YOU’VE ALSO COACHED YOUTH HOCKEY. CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF TEACHING YOUNG PLAYERS THE PROPER FUNDAMENTALS? It

is very important. I try to get on the ice and help the young kids with hockey schools to help develop their skills. It’s very important that young kids get very good coaching so they don’t get bad habits.

Kris Letang can skate like the wind. He can hammer the puck. He’s got nifty hands. A head for the attack. But Letang can hit, too. During his four NHL seasons, the 6-foot, 201-pound defenseman has put on some muscle and figured out how to use it. He and Brooks Orpik make a fearsome tandem on the blue line. “I don’t think I just became physical,” said Letang, 24. “I always liked the physical aspect of the game. I didn’t enjoy it as much as right now because I wasn’t as strong as I am right now. It’s something in the game I really love. “Our sport is a fast and physical sport, so I love to get involved physically.” Last year was a breakout year for the Montreal native — sort of. Letang had eight goals and 42 assists, hitting career highs in helpers and points. Fans voted him a starter for the 2011 NHL All-Star Game in Raleigh, N.C. But Letang’s production dipped dramatically in the second half of the campaign. He scored zero goals after Feb. 11. He had just five assists in his last 23 games. The rest of his game persevered. Letang just couldn’t get points. “With the loss of our two top guys [Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin], I tried to do a little too much,” Letang said. “I tried to accomplish things guys can’t do by themselves. It wasn’t easy to play with everything I had in my head. “I still improved defensively even though I wasn’t getting points, and in the playoffs I showed up and did the job.” Letang had four assists in seven games against Tampa Bay. But that didn’t make the first-round elimination at the hands of the Lightning any easier to take. continued on page 171

“It was really disappointing to lose after [being] up three games to one,” Letang admitted. “But I just went back home and used the opportunity to get more rest. I changed the way I worked out. I changed a few things on the ice. It was a chance for me to learn different things.” Letang’s had enough of early summers, though. “When I look at this summer: The guys we signed, the fact that Geno is getting healthy and Sid is getting healthy — I think we have a really good shot at winning,” Letang said. “We have all the elements in place to do some great things.” Individually, Letang wants to play all season just like he did in the first half of last season. “I want to make sure I keep going for 82 games,” he said. Looking at last season, Letang said, “It’s amazing that we [got] 106 points [without Crosby and Malkin]. Those are guys that can win almost by themselves some nights. “Sid looks really good in practice, and you can see how good the off-season was for Geno. He made sure he was healthy, and you can see he’s stronger

Kris Letang is feeling optimistic about the season with both Sid and Geno getting healthy. continued on page 172

“OUR SPORT IS A FAST AND PHYSICAL SPORT, SO I LOVE TO GET INVOLVED PHYSICALLY.” and faster. He’s got the chance to show that last year was just a badluck year for him. To have a year like he did when we won the Cup.” Letang’s physical play is emboldened by a physical partner: “Brooksy’s really reliable defensively. He always backs me up. He’s always in the right spot. “It’s easy for me to make decisions. It’s easy to join the rush knowing you have someone to back you up. It’s easy for me to play my game having a partner like him.” Letang plans to keep skating, scoring and hitting. But what about when the Penguins play the hated Philadelphia Flyers, now featuring Max Talbot, Letang’s former teammate? The season’s first Pens-Flyers meeting is Dec. 8 at Philly. “I’m probably going to hit Max, too,” Letang said, laughing. “Whoever is in my way, I will hit.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).
