From the Innovation Pittsburgh In March, in partnership with St. Barnabas, we kicked off our brand new quarterly speaker series, Innovation Pittsburgh. Hosted by Jim Roddey, former Allegheny County Executive, through this series, we will be bringing in the region’s biggest and brightest movers and shakers to give insight on important business issues and their impact on the region.

The events will take place at St. Barnabas’ Washington Place, in Gibsonia. It’s About The Warrior Foundation It's About the Warrior Foundation (IATW Foundation) was created in 2012 by Founder and Executive Director Steve Monteleone, a seven year United States Air Force veteran. What was just supposed to be a simple golf tournament event at OLDE STONEWALL GOLF CLUB in Ellwood City, PA for other veteran organizations, has turned into something special in the TRI-STATE AREA for our veterans and their families!.

IATW Foundation is a non-profit (501c3) post 9/11 veterans organization that assists and empowers ALL (not just wounded, deployed, or combat) veterans with their four programs. These four programs are: Financial Grant Assistance, Home Improvement, Therapeutic, and Outreach programs.

The funding for these programs is allotted from our fundraising events, donations, and sponsorships throughout each year. We welcome our communities, businesses, and any other interested organizations to support our Foundation each year.

Veteran Start-ups: Top 3 Overlooked “Benefits” Veterans have in building a Business by Joe Calloway When I was exiting the US Navy in 2005 after 7 years of active duty service, I was determined to start my own business and never work for “THE MAN” again. I was slammed with information on the programs and benefits afforded to me as a veteran. From loans, to education, to healthcare, to job training, it seemed they had me covered. But after I got my walking papers and was out on the mean streets of the START-UP world, I quickly realized these programs alone were not going to take me to the places I wanted to go. Instead, I'd have to use the lessons learned in the finest business school in the world - The US Military.

The Network Early on in my business I had to raise capital to execute my real estate strategy for RE360. As I was building our pitch book,I was questioned by my partner if my military experience was relevant in the world of finance and capital raising. He had a long resume of impressive honors including IVY league schools and high level qualifications and did not believe that the millionaires we were asking for money would find military service relevant when considering investing money with us. At our first meeting, I discussed my time in the service with the CFO of a wealth management firm who was an Army vet. Our bond was instant and much deeper than any frat boy hand shake could muster up.

Always dig deep into your military network when looking for answers, money, and resources, and never underestimate the power of this powerful brother/ sisterhood.

The Grind My navy career started off with 12 hour days chipping paint over the side of a ship that was older than I was.

Then I still had to stand 24 hour duty every 4th day.

When the ship was deployed I worked around the clock standing watches and repairing electronic equipment.

These long days and nights trained me to work hard and work a lot. This is one of the biggest keys to success in entrepreneurship. The willingness to put in the work and never stop is a major key and the military trains its members accordingly.

As Chief Dooley, my first boss in the Navy, told me when I reported to the ship, “You are in luck. This week we are only working a half day, 7am to 7pm!” Work hard and success will follow.

The Team Loyalty and dedication to your team is a must when growing a business. If you do not take care of your employees then they will not take care of you. The military teaches you to put your division, unit, branch, and America ahead of your individual goals. If you treat your team in this manner they will put their neck on the line for you when the going gets tough.

If your team knows you will lead them into battle, they will always have your back.

In closing, the military owes us nothing as it has taught us the most valuable lessons in business and life. So go out there, make it happen, and use your fighting spirit to find your success in business.

The Case for Support of Veteran Owned Business Growth and Development in SWPA by Richard G. Portis A Voice for powering the Growth of Veteran business enterprise in SWPA must be a strategic goal that actualizes this important subject as a regional economic growth driver.

Providing targeted assistance in the quest to grow Veteran business and facilitate the potential of Veteran entrepreneur business owners to access Government and industry decision-makers, ours is to continually support Veteran owned small business through City Regional State Federal Commerce Supplier opportunities.

Veteran Business provides employment and community civic stability as well as coordination of employment and entrepreneurship opportunities across both public and private sectors.

As Managing Partner of XXI-C Industries, LLC we have entered again into the space of; Veteran Business Growth and Development. We have come to realize that the great resurgence of SWPA should also be known for being a great place for Veteran Business to flourish in the areas of technology, Health care and robotics and energy innovation.

My experiences managing the Robert Morris University Veterans Business Outreach now leads me to many Veteran Businesses that I met over the years at RMU who also participated in the RMU VBOC. What I have to come to realize is that many of the still existing Veteran Businesses are not proactively participating and contributing in the current growth of our region. This becomes a missed opportunity for those businesses and the economic vitality of our region.

We are beginning to Launch the PA/Veteran Business Innovation coalition. Our Goals are;  To be a strategic partner to the many economic development agencies corporation Government entities toward maximizing the potential of Veteran Business ownership and development.  Through outreach efforts contact veterans with importance to our program. These programs may include: networking events, mentoring.  Implement marketing campaigns to sponsors, Veterans and Veteran owned businesses.  Increase awareness of opportunities for veterans and their families.

Veterans have a significant impact on the economy as owners of their own businesses. According to the United States Census Bureau, in 2007, veterans owned about 2.4 million businesses or nine percent of all American businesses.

These businesses generated $1.2 trillion in receipts and employed nearly 6 million Americans. In addition, a recent SBA study found that military service exhibits one of the largest marginal effects on self-employment, and veterans are 45% more likely to be self-employed than non-veterans.

There are organized events that foster Government Outreach Events and wonder what’s my return on investing in attending this event. Often times we’re not clear of the outcome and/or how to accomplish the outcome. Is the outcome receiving a contract award while at the event, I don’t think so? The government, in my understanding has never awarded a contract unless they’ve received a written response from a contractor. I don’t think you will meet a contracting officer at an outreach event and they award you a contract. If proper follow ups are done, there’s a very good chance you can obtain a contract award as a result of attending a government outreach event.

Look for Strategic Partners that you can complement their services, as well as they can complement your service.

Bye, bye Public Safety Department There’s a new department in town. The Cranberry Fire and Emergency Services Department was formally established with a resolution by the Township’s Board of Supervisors at its April 27 meeting. The reorganization of the community’s public safety functions grew out of a fire company strategic planning effort that began two years ago, leading to a report which the Board adopted last year. It called for creation of the new department, while the Police Department, which had formerly been under the Public Safety Department umbrella, would report directly to the Township Manager. David Gallagher, who has spent his career as a Paramedic and Chief of EMS for a service in western Allegheny County as well as the Chief of his hometown fire department in Stowe, will be the new department’s first Director

Two police officers honored for saving lives On March 28, courage combined with good neighborhood knowledge alerted Cranberry police Corporal Christopher Zevola and Patrol Officer Victor Korol to the possibility that there were people still inside a burning home on Sherwood Drive. Upon hearing telltale sounds from inside the house after responding to a mail carrier’s 911 call, the two officers entered the building, wearing only their service uniforms, and alerted the sleeping men to the danger. Both men escaped unharmed. Recognizing the two officers’ heroism, Cranberry’s Board of Supervisors, at their April 27 meeting, presented them with Police Department’s Lifesaving Award for extraordinary performance of their duty

McCandless Township Summer Recreation Program Resident school-age students in the North Allegheny School District are invited to attend the Summer Recreation Program sponsored by the joint municipalities of Bradford Woods, Franklin Park, Marshall, and McCandless. What to do if you haven’t filed a Tax Return April 18, 2017, was the deadline for most taxpayers to file their tax returns. If you haven’t filed a 2016 return yet, don’t delay. There’s still time—and it’s not as difficult as you think.

What to Do When your Return Is Late First gather any and all information related to income and deductions for the tax years for which a return is required to be filed and then call the office.

If your owed money, then the sooner you file, the sooner you’ll get your refund. If you owe taxes, you should file and pay as soon as you can, which will stop the interest and penalties that you will owe.

If you owe money but can’t pay the IRS in full, you should pay as much as you can when you file your tax return to minimize penalties and interest.

Don’t Ignore a Tax Bill The IRS will work with taxpayers suffering financial hardship. If you continue to ignore your tax bill, the IRS may tax collection action.

Payment Options—Ways to Make a Payment There are several different ways to make a payment on your taxes. Payments can be made by credit card, electronic funds transfer, check, money order, cashier’s check, or cash. If you pay your federal taxes using a major credit card or debit card, there is no IRS fee for credit or debit card payments, but the processing companies charge a convenience fee or flat fee.

Payment Options—For Those Who Can’t Pay in Full Taxpayers unable to pay all taxes due on a tax bill are encouraged to pay as much as possible. By paying as much as possible now, the amount of interest and penalties owed will be less than if you do not pay anything at all. Based on individual circumstances, a taxpayer could qualify for an extension of time to pay, an installment agreement, a temporary delay, or an offer in compromise. Please call if you have questions about any of these options.

When it comes to paying your tax bill, it is important to review all your options; the interest rate on a loan or credit card may be lower than the combination of penalties and interest imposed by the Internal Revenue Code. You should pay as much as possible before entering into an installment agreement.

For Individuals, IRS Direct Pay is a fast and free way to pay directly from your checking or savings account.

Taxpayers who need more time to pay can set up either a short-term payment extension or a monthly payment plan. Most people can set up a payment plan using the Online Payment Agreement tool on IRS.gov 

A short-term extension gives a taxpayer an additional 60 to 120 days to pay. No fee is charged, but the late-payment penalty plus interest will apply. Generally, taxpayers will pay less in penalties and interest than if the debt were repaid through an installment agreement over a greater period of time.


