Education for Tomorrow’s Workforce: It Is More than Selecting a HighDemand Job Title By: Jason Vallozzi, Campus to Career Crossroads When thinking about the jobs of tomorrow, many people often think of popular high-demand career industries such as artificial intelligence, software development, engineering, and data analytics. While these in-demand industries and other growth industries will produce new career opportunities, long-term career success for many students is more than choosing a job title that relates to their academic interests. Human resource leaders, hiring managers, and senior leadership in leading companies need employees with the “hard, technical skills” but equally essential are the "soft skills.” Soft skills such as collaboration, emotional intelligence, problem solving, entrepreneurial thinking, and creativity, are needed to thrive in numerous careers.

In many industries, the leading companies are cognizant to the fact that the sincere efforts of academia are not educating graduates with the skills needed to be effective and productive employees. Additionally, study time and extracurricular activities leaves little time for some students to seek out internships, research projects, and part -time jobs. Therefore, employers are finding that entry level employees may be lacking the necessary rudimentary workplace experiences gained by relevant work experiences.

As I presently work with numerous families in the region providing comprehensive college to career planning, I understand firsthand the challenges that students have connecting to the jobs of tomorrow, plus understanding the concept of soft skills. For example, I am impressed by the STEM knowledge of many of my clients but they do not know how to connect their classroom experiences and passions to potential career paths.

The mission at Campus to Career Crossroads is to develop a supportive and individualized partnership with students and their families in order to help them successfully navigate the transitional and complex stages from high school to career. One way that I do this for many of my clients is by taking the unique step of arranging meetings with high-level professionals in a specific field. Understanding hiring needs, entry level salaries, emerging companies, and market conditions can be a powerful way to plan for the jobs of tomorrow.

My clients have received valuable career information from top organizations such as the Pittsburgh Penguins, Ford Motor Company, and Allegheny Health Network. They have met with high-level professionals such as presidents to directors to further learn the intricate details of a specific career and some students have even established a professional mentor relationship. Additionally, I have developed numerous industry relationships with colleagues in many high-level positions throughout the country that keeps me apprised of their internal talent shortages so I can appropriately advise students about specific career fields.

Education is a major investment. I believe as families approach the post-secondary planning process, having meaningful career information regarding the jobs of tomorrow is crucial to safeguarding the return on that investment. 21st Century Skills Every High School Graduate Needs for Life Success By: Huntington Learning Center We all want our children to graduate high school ready to take on the world and succeed in college and beyond. But success in the 21st century demands much more than mastery of the fundamental academic skills like math, reading and writing. The world today is highly complex and fast moving. Teens need to be prepared.

Here are a few of the most essential skills high school graduates need: Collaboration and teamwork – Technology has changed the way students learn and engage with one another and has certainly changed the way all organizations operate. In college, students will be expected to communicate and collaborate with each other in a multitude of ways. Just like in high school, teamwork is integrated into the college classroom. Teens who are able to work effectively with a range of personality types, take responsibility on school work and be flexible in how they approach course goals will be equipped for success.

Critical thinking – You’ve heard it before and you’ll hear it again and again: critical thinking is an invaluable skill for students. In college and the working world, people are faced with a wide range of multifaceted challenges and problems, but not always provided much direction to deal with them. The ability to analyze, discuss and question situations in a logical, systematic way is essential.

Creativity – There’s critical thinking, then there’s creative thinking. Students who are able to think critically and also exhibit creativity when needed are a step above the rest. They’re able to come up with outside-the-box ideas and refine and improve those ideas. They recognize that some problems require unique solutions and they understand that working with others might be the best way to cultivate solutions to those problems. At a time when new technologies and tools are constantly being created, creativity is more important than ever.

Problem solving – Ever heard the stance that the problems that will face the global workforce tomorrow aren’t even on our radar today? It’s true! And in the college environment, teens will be encouraged to approach problems in a variety of ways. It will be expected that they thoroughly analyze problems, come up with potential solutions and develop and execute action plans. It’s also important that they are able to learn from missteps in their solutions. That way, they can go back and try to solve problems a different way if their first attempts didn’t work as intended.

Leadership – Guess what? All of the above are skills exhibited by leaders. Even when teens don’t identify their future college and career plans as those of a leader, leadership development can only benefit them. By the time they graduate high school, teens should be comfortable setting goals and working diligently toward achieving them, no matter how difficult. They should feel comfortable taking chances to go after the things they want and recognizing that risk-taking sometimes involves failing.

That’s actually a great thing—and an opportunity to learn and grow.

Why do I have test anxiety?

By: Christopher Yco, Tricycle Learning Company We have all been there. You get your test scores back, and they are lower than expected.

WAY lower. It’s not a good feeling.

Don’t worry. We can help with that.

When we meet with families, they tell us that their student has “test anxiety.” Students tell us that they are just bad test takers. No matter how well they perform in their classes, they are just not made to take tests well.

First, let’s identify the problem: What is test anxiety? Some describe it as a fog, while others tell us that they feel rushed the entire time they are taking a test. They are unable to choose an answer and spend too much time thinking. They start thinking about how many questions they’ve already missed, how many hours they have spent studying, how many people they will disappoint.

They spend hours making their swing become “muscle memory.” Archers are taught to keep their entire process the same for every arrow. From the time they pick up the arrow, to the time it is released from the bow, they are taught to keep their process the same.

At Tricycle Learning, we teach your students how to take the emotion out of the game. We discourage thought and train a process. Whether it’s in the Critical Reading, Writing, or Math Section, students will have steps that they can use to approach every problem.

Seven Common Small Business Tax Myths The complexity of the tax code generates a lot of folklore and misinformation that could lead to costly mistakes such as penalties for failing to file on time or, on the flip side, not taking advantage of deductions you are legally entitled to take and giving the IRS more money than you need to. With this in mind, let's take a look at seven common small business tax myths.

ADVERTORIAL

1. Start-Up Costs are Deductible Immediately Business start-up costs refer to expenses incurred before you actually begin operating your business. Business start-up costs include both start-up and organizational costs and vary depending on the type of business. Examples of these types of costs include advertising, travel, surveys, and training.

These start-up and organizational costs are generally called capital expenditures.

Costs for a particular asset such as machinery or office equipment are recovered through depreciation or Section 179 expensing. When you start a business, you can elect to deduct or amortize certain business start-up costs.

Business start-up and organizational costs are generally capital expenditures. However, you can elect to deduct up to $5,000 of business start-up and $5,000 of organizational costs. The $5,000 deduction is reduced (but not below zero) by the amount your total start-up or organizational costs exceed $50,000. Remaining costs must be amortized.

2. Overpaying the IRS makes you "Audit Proof" It is never a good idea to knowingly or unknowingly overpay the IRS. You should only pay the amount of tax that you owe. The IRS doesn't care if you pay the right amount of taxes or overpay your taxes; however, they do care if you pay less than you owe and you can't substantiate your deductions with good recordkeeping. The best way to "Audit Proof" yourself is to properly document your expenses and make sure you are getting good advice from your tax accountant.

3. You can take more Deductions if your Business is Incorporated.

The good news is that self-employed individuals (sole proprietors and S Corps) qualify for many of the same deductions that incorporated businesses do. As such, becoming incorporated is often an unnecessary expense and burden that many small business owners don’t need. For instance, start-ups can spend thousands of dollars in legal and accounting fees to set up a corporation, only to discover soon thereafter that they need to change their name or take the company in a different direction. Furthermore, plenty of small business owners who incorporate don't make money for the first few years and find themselves saddled with minimum corporate tax payments and no income.

4. The Home Office Deduction is a Red Flag for an Audit.

While the home office deduction used to be a red flag, this is no longer true. In fact, with so many people operating home-based businesses the IRS rolled out a new simplified home office deduction in 2013, which makes it even easier to claim the home office deduction (as long as it can be substantiated with excellent recordkeeping).

Furthermore, because of the proliferation of home offices, tax officials cannot possibly audit all tax returns of small business owners taking the home office deduction. In other words, there is no need to fear an audit just because you take the home office deduction; however, a high deduction-to-income ratio, however, may raise a red flag and lead to an audit.

5. You can’t Deduct Business Expenses if you don't take the Home Office Deduction.

You are still eligible to take deductions for business supplies, business-related phone bills, travel expenses, printing, wages paid to employees or contract workers, depreciation of equipment used for your business, and other expenses related to running a home-based business, whether or not you take the home office deduction.

NexTier Bank Nonprofit Spotlight Alzheimer’s Association Pittsburgh Spring Professional Education Conference The Alzheimer's Association Greater Pennsylvania Chapter is proud to present their spring professional education conference on Tuesday, May 7th from 8:00a.m.-4:30p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn at Southpointe, 1000 Corporate Drive, Canonsburg.

Education Conferences are offered as a way to both educate families and professionals who care for those living with Alzheimer’s and related dementias as well as community members on the latest innovative approaches to dementia care and practical tools to help them provide the best quality of care possible for those living with Alzheimer’s or related dementia. Continuing education credits will be provided to professionals seeking hours in disciplines for social work, nursing, nursing home administration and personal care home administration.

The Alzheimer’s Association Greater Pennsylvania Chapter is excited to welcome featured guest speaker Daniel C. Potts, MD, FAAN from Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Coauthor of A Pocket Guide for the Alzheimer’s Caregiver and one of Maria Shriver’s Architects of Change, neurologist Daniel C. On staff at Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center, Potts is also Founder and President of Cognitive Dynamics Foundation and Medical Director at Dementia Dynamics, LLC. Through these two institutions, Potts channels inspiration and hope gained through caring for his father, Lester, who became an acclaimed watercolor artist in the throes of Alzheimer’s disease. Potts will be sharing his father’s story of triumph, hope and creativity internationally at the conference by describing the benefits of art, creativity and connection in the life of his father and the expression of his personhood and in forming relationships and the benefits of expressive arts therapies and creativity in persons with cognitive impairment.

The conference will also feature, Joseph C. Maroon, MD, FACS. Dr. Maroon is Clinical Professor and Vice Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery and the Heindl Scholar in Neuroscience at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pittsburgh, PA. He has been the team neurosurgeon for the Pittsburgh Steelers for 30 years and the first neurosurgeon directly appointed in the NFL and will be discussing his innovative project: New Concepts in Brain Health and Dementia Prevention: Using Virtual Reality for Senior Memory Care presenting the latest science on maintaining brain health no matter what age we are.

Other sessions will feature a variety of topics including an interactive session from PA Council on the Arts; an informative session about understanding family dynamics and dementia; a better understanding on the work of Dementia Friendly Greater Pittsburgh and more!
