The Pittsburgh North Regional Chamber prides itself in being one of the largest, most active Chambers of Commerce in the region. We have made it a priority to connect our members through a variety of networking events. With a thousand members, more than 300 events annually, educational programs and its online presence, the Chamber engages its members for the purpose of their success.

Jim Boltz President

The summer usually provides a natural lull in business activity. The Chamber, however, has two huge events so that your business can make the connections that it needs to continue going strong. We have partnered with other local networking groups so our members can expand their reach. On June 19th, in partnership with the Pittsburgh Business Exchange, we will be having our annual Summer Bash. This year we will have it at Zone 28. In addition to great networking, food and beverage, you will also be able to bowl and play games. Always a great event, we are expecting over 150 business leaders at the event. On July 22nd, we will be hosting our second Mega Mixer. Food, fun and lots of networking opportunities will be provided as we cruise the three rivers on the Gateway Clipper. Last year, we had nine area Chambers participate which brought close to 400 guests. This year’s event promises to be bigger and better. We currently have 13 Chambers committed to the event. Here are the Chambers that are participating: -Ellwood City Area Chamber of Commerce -Monroeville Area Chamber of Commerce -Northside Northshore Chamber of Commerce -Southpointe Chamber of Commerce -Southside Chamber of Commerce -South Hills Chamber of Commerce -South West Communities Chamber of Commerce -Peters Township Chamber of Commerce -Pittsburgh Airport Area Chamber of Commerce -Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce -Pittsburgh North Regional Chamber -Three Rivers Business Alliance -Westmoreland County Chamber of Commerce These two events alone promise to make this year’s summer very exciting. Sincerely, Jim Boltz President Pittsburgh North Regional Chamber

PNRC Member Lisa Hunt, USX Federal Credit Union Jim Boltz, President PNRC said, “Lisa is the epitome of what this award is about. She consistently goes above and beyond what is expected from a Chamber member. She attends most events, volunteers for many, takes an active role in several committees and continually advocates for the Chamber. If we had a Lifetime Achievement Award, she would receive it. We count on Lisa for so much and she always delivers.” Lisa is extremely dedicated to the Chamber and its members. When I first became a member of the Chamber a few years ago, Lisa was one of the first individuals to make sure that I felt welcomed and included. This is something that she continues to do consistently as new members enter the Chamber. Thank you for everything that you do Lisa!“ said Valerie Wieloch, Dollar Bank. Amanda McCollough, Dittman EyeCare said “Lisa is such an advocate of the PNRC, and is great at connecting people and helping form long lasting relationships. She has such a passion for everything she does which you can see at many events she participates in. Lisa is encouraging, compassionate, selfless and hard working.”

Don’t Join A Networking Group To Grow Your Business By: Al Marschke, BluMars Media When you first joined a networking group, what were you thinking? I felt like I was at a singles bar with all guys. A room full of sellers and no buyers. It seemed everyone wanted to hand out their card, but no one really wanted to take one. Business card collisions everywhere because people were quick to pass but not receive cards. Networking Is A Picnic Eventually it became very clear that there were three types of people in my group. 1. Takers - They give a commercial and leave. They’re never listening-; just waiting to talk. These people show up to a picnic to eat but don’t bring anything. 2. Matchers - They’ll help you but only if you help them. These are the picnic goers who will only trade food. 3. Givers - They always bring something. They’re never focused on what they get. They make picnics fun. So, in a networking situation, always bring something - a visitor, referral or at least a testimonial. Surely in a week’s time you can think of something good to say about someone else. It’s A Small World After All Is a singles bar such a bad place to network? If you realize that it’s not about the people in the room but who THEY know, then it’s perfect. Keep in mind that everyone knows at least 50 people. So a room with 10 people is like a room of 500. Leverage the people you know to meet the ones you don’t. In helping others connect you will be connected. It’s inevitable. The Best Compliment Is Listening How do you feel when someone listens to you and engages with what you’re saying? Does it make you feel relevant? Important? Sure it does. Practice the compliment of listening. Don’t Ask - Don’t Tell People inevitably ask, “If I’m always listening, when do I tell people about what I do?” It’s simple. When they ask. Then keep it short. Only follow-up your “commercial” if they ask you a follow-up question. If they don’t ask, they don’t care. You can’t MAKE someone listen or care. You Had Me At Hello Ultimately, networking is about building relationships, not your business. Business growth is actually a byproduct of relationships and the best relationships start with a simple conversation. Networking is more like a marathon and not a sprint. Take your time and make new friends by helping and teaching others. Contribute, don’t sell. Think Outside The Networking Box It may sound counterintuitive but join to serve. When you work to help others become successful you will be surrounded by successful people. Like good karma, it comes back multiplied over time. Sure, you joined a networking group to grow your business. Try switching gears; use your networking group as a way to get involved in the community and watch your connections grow.. That’s networking. Just because you joined a networking group doesn’t mean you’re networking. It’s like a gym membership. For it to be effective, you have to do the work, sometimes outside of the meeting. Zig Ziglar said it best: “You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want.”

“I Know a Guy.” By: Ron MacDonald, Step2 Branding & Design Building Trust through Networking Networking is not just about making connections and creating awareness of your business. It’s also about forming an alliance of credible professionals to help you fill organizational gaps and be able to confidently refer others. You Cannot be All Things to All People Building an alliance of proven experts will help you augment areas outside your own expertise and enable you to offer more to your customers. For example, in our marketing communications business, we occasionally need a commercial photographer. We don’t do that, but I know a guy. Quality printing at an affordable price? I know a guy. We build websites, but occasionally need a seasoned developer to do some heavier lifting. Luckily, I know a guy. SEO? Social media channel management? We do some and can certainly help you make the right decisions. But, if you need a full-blown campaign, I know a guy. All of this makes our clients’ lives a lot easier, serves our business better and enhances our reputation. You’re Only as Good as Those You Surround Yourself with Your network should never be limited to only those who can directly help you. Your own contacts, clients, friends and family have needs beyond what you can offer. If they trust you, they’ll reach out to you for recommendations. Your valued judgment will serve as their pre-qualifier. A colleague of ours is in the process of relocating their office. They reached out to me for referrals of moving companies. Luckily, I have a rep in one of my groups and was well aware of their track record of success. While we never used them ourselves, I was confident in referring them. Things have worked out well for both. Will I get more business out of it? Maybe, maybe not. But you cannot put a dollar value on that level of trust. Beware of Fishing in the Wrong Pond One key to networking successfully is to not get trapped in the wrong groups or creating false alliances. If your business is B2B, membership in a group that’s mostly B2C might not provide many opportunities to gain referrals and build trust. If you’re in a category-exclusive group, don’t fall into the trap of referring fellow members solely because they’re fellow members and you need to meet a quota. That’s the antithesis of good networking. If your personal accountant has served you well and you have no experience with the one in your group, which would you refer? Remember, your recommendation is a reflection of your judgment. Your reputation is not something to risk with unknowns. Try Sharing Instead of Selling So, how do you get others to trust you with their business if they haven’t tried you? One way is to teach them. Instead of using your 60-second commercial to be all about you, try offering helpful advice. If you regularly teach others, you are indirectly selling by sharing your expertise. That has far greater value than a self-serving commercial. When referral opportunities do arise, even those who haven’t personally used your product or services will think back to the times they learned from you and be more inclined to pass along their trusted contact. Another approach is to share client testimonials. Nothing promotes your business better than the words of others. Sharing a client success story can be very powerful and begin to make it easier for others to refer, even if they haven’t personally engaged you. In closing, networking will not grow your business without first building trust among your potential referral sources. So, the next time you’re at a networking event, instead of viewing people as prospects, ask yourself how you can build their trust and become a part of their referral system. Becoming “that guy they know” is the big prize. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Ron MacDonald, of Step2 Branding & Design, believes that a marketing communications plan is vital to the success of any business; and effectively reaching the right audience with the right message and a polished, professional look is what distinguishes market leaders. Four Unusual But Effective Ways To Network By: Niamh Linehan, ThinkBusiness.ie

Networking is evolving beyond windowless conference rooms filled with awkward silences and lackluster finger buffets. Awkward. That’s the word that springs to mind when thinking about traditional networking events. The term itself, “networking event”, tends to conjure up images of awkward interactions. A room full of people wearing poorlyplaced name tags (there’s always one person who has the shame of a handwritten badge), desperately trying to make a great first impression, while hoping no one has noticed that this is their third trip to the wine table in less than an hour. Whether you love it or loathe it, networking is a necessity, and the importance of having professional contacts in a connected sector cannot be underestimated. Leveraging the relationships you have, both professionally and personally, can improve business alliances, increase sales and create job opportunities, where they may not have existed previously.

Thankfully, networking is evolving beyond windowless conference rooms filled with awkward silences and lackluster finger buffets – cheese and pineapple on a cocktail stick anyone? It’s not 1992, guys. Today, networking can be done in a variety of ways, and we’ve outlined four strategies you can use to expand your professional circle, without ever having to wear an adhesive sticker again. The gym Whether it’s your comrades in CrossFit, your fellow pedal pushers in a spin class or the people you share a nod and smile with on the gym floor, the place where you work out can sometimes provide a better environment to make connections than the place where you work. So, yes, you may be more focused on obtaining your PB (personal best) rather than working on a BP (business plan), but that’s not to say you can’t mix a little business with leisure. Whether it’s grabbing a smoothie after a workout or chatting to your spotter about challenges you face outside of the gym, you can use this outlet to establish beneficial relationships that may end up becoming precious over time. Volunteering Not only is volunteering good for the soul, and the community, it can also help you to fill gaps on your CV, learn new skills and, keeping on topic, meet new and engaging people. Volunteering gives you the opportunity to practice and develop your social skills, by regularly meeting with individuals who share common interests. Your professional development can benefit from volunteering in many ways, not only through the connections that you make. Through volunteering, you can expose yourself to a variety of different professional organizations or internships that could be advantageous to your career or business. Volunteering also offers you the opportunity to try out a new career without having to make a long-term commitment. It’s a great way to gain experience in a new field, and many companies look favorably upon candidates who do pro bono work in their spare time. Online Yes, everyone knows that LinkedIn the social networking sites for professionals. But have you actually used it to actively network? The business-to-business platform has groups covering everything; from HR to startups to writing for business – the list goes on. Becoming an active member of these groups is a great way to expand your network and open conversation with like-minded individuals. Reaching out to people for advice is another great feature associated with networks like LinkedIn. While in the real world, you might be hesitant to cold call someone you admire or respect from afar to ask for advice, it’s perfectly acceptable to reach out via LinkedIn and “connect” with that person. Top tip: When connecting with a stranger, delete the auto-generated “I’d like to add you to my network” message and take some time to explain why you would like to make the connection. The chance of someone, not only accepting your invitation but replying to your message, increases significantly if you add a personal note. Continued on Page 11

Four Unusual But Effective Ways To Network (Continued from Page 10) By: Niamh Linehan, ThinkBusiness.ie

Hobbies and interests Hobbies are a great way of connecting with people who share similar interests. Running clubs, sailing, knitting circles – if you have a hobby, there’s a group to cater to it. Meetup is the world’s largest network of local groups, bringing people with mutual interests together for the purpose of socializing, creating a sense of community or networking. People from a variety of backgrounds regularly get together to host events or informal gatherings. Not only is it a great way to expand your social circle, as well as your professional network, it can also help you to learn new skills while dipping your toe into something you may not have experienced before. Remember, networking opportunities are not restricted to formal settings. They can also be uncovered through conversation and personal interaction. A robust network can keep you informed about the job market informally even when you are not seeking work. The old saying, “It’s not what you know, but who you know” has a ring of truth to it for a reason. The more people can connect to you on a personal level, the more inclined they will be to see you as a good fit for their organization or to think of you the next time they hear of an exciting business opportunity. Don’t be afraid to branch out and expand your professional circle through unconventional means – you could be one squat session away from your dream role or next client win.

Tips for Getting Paid on Time Have you found that collecting on your accounts receivables has become more challenging? If so, strengthening your collection procedures may allow you to improve collection rates and shorten the aging days of your accounts receivables. While some tips discussed here may not be suitable for every business, most can serve as general guidelines to give your company more financial stability.

ADVERTORIAL

Define Your Policy Define and stick to concrete credit guidelines. Your sales force should not sell to customers who are not creditworthy or who have become delinquent. You should also delineate what leeway salespeople have to vary from these guidelines in attempting to attract customers.

Tip: Have a system of controls for checking out a potential customer's credit in place before shipping an order. Furthermore, there should be clear communication between the accounting department and the sales department as to current customers who become delinquent. Explain Your Payment Policy Invoices should contain clear written information about how much time customers have to pay and what will happen if they exceed those limits. Tip: Make sure invoices include a telephone number and website address so customers can contact you with billing questions. Also include a pre-addressed envelope. Tip: The faster invoices are sent, the faster you receive payment. For most businesses, it's best to send an invoice with a shipment, rather than afterward in a separate mailing. Follow Through on Your Stated Terms If your policy stipulates that late payers will go into collection after 60 days, then you must stick to that policy. A member of your staff (but not a salesperson) should call all late payers and politely request payment. Accounts of those who exceed your payment deadlines should be penalized and/or sent into collection, if that is your stated policy. Train Staff Appropriately Apprise the person designated to make calls to delinquent customers of the seriousness and professionalism required for the task. Here is a suggested routine for calls to delinquent payers:  Become familiar with the account's history and any past and present invoices.  Call the customer and ask to speak with whoever has the authority to make the payment.  Demand payment in plain, non-apologetic terms.  If the customer offers payment, ask for specific dates and terms. If the customer does not offer payment, tell the customer what the consequences will be.  Take notes on the conversation.  Make a follow-up call if you still haven't received a payment and refer to the notes taken as to any promised payments. Need help tightening up your credit and collection policies? Help is just a phone call away! For more information, visit Holsinger.

“CWBC has changed my life. I have experienced a very real metamorphosis from a 'hoper' or 'dreamer' to a true, honest-to-goodness 'doer' and a small business owner. The opening of my dream business, Eva Bryn Shoetique, is greatly due to the support and knowledge gained from the CWBC. From the very start, CWBC exposed me to women business owners that are confident, articulate and generous with their time and knowledge. From the business counseling to the 6-week Concept to Launch start-up class, I was able to receive amazing insight on a fairly regular basis that helped me truly 'launch' my business concept. The business advice I have received has truly given me the confidence to take the leap. Having this regular support has truly enabled and empowered me to follow through on becoming a 'doer'.
