Most of our members are very familiar with the role of our chamber. Our mission is to create opportunities for business growth through networking, cooperation, advocacy and education. What most don’t know is that we have a separate Education Foundation whose role is to support our efforts in charitable work.

Every year, the Foundation awards at least five college scholarships. The applicants are mostly from local high schools but open to any high school graduate. Typically seventy to eighty seniors apply for these awards. Decisions on this year’s winners will be announced soon.

We also award up to ten tech/trade school scholarships annually. There is no deadline for these scholarships. They are awarded on a rolling basis and are open to anyone who plans to continue their schooling in the tech/trade fields.

This includes older adults and those changing careers.

It is also part of the mission for the Foundation to schedule Days of Caring. During these planned events, Chamber members volunteer their time to physically support a member charity. Landscaping, painting and help with events are just some of the things that we have offered our assistance.

Similarly, our Giving Tree event is part of the Chamber’s efforts to give back to the community. We collect gifts for individuals that are in need and served by several of our charitable organizations. Every year, the number of gifts that we have collected has increased. Each of the past four years, we were able to provide over 500 gifts for people, young and old that might otherwise went without.

The Chamber’s Outreach Committee is primarily responsible for coordinating all the above mentioned programs.

They are a very dedicated group that embraces their role of giving back. If you would like to become involved in the Outreach Committee, contact the Chamber office.

Going Green for Trees By: Faith Suto, Pittsburgh Lumberjack Tree Service, INC. We began Pittsburgh Lumberjack Tree Service over 20 years ago with a single truck and chainsaw.

Through the years we have evolved into a green facility. As our tree service began to grow we quickly recognized the industry's lack of efficient green waste disposal. As a result, we took on the task as the primary green material collector in the area to not only service ourselves, but other local companies who had green material to be recycled. As this side of the business grew we purchased a high-volume grinder that transforms the green waste into reusable green by-products.

To begin, the excess materials from job sites are brought back to our lot where they are sorted according to size and species. Smaller logs and brush are sorted for grinding while woodchips are piled in the designated holding area.

We mill select hardwood logs and kiln-dry them for purchase by hobbyists, artists or even to be used for custom-built furniture by our carpenter on staff. Select hardwoods such as oak, cherry or maple that are not of sawmill quality are sent to the splitter to be sold as firewood.

Next, we run the woodchips through the grinder for a primary grind. This becomes our natural mulch which has a light blonde color and is known as playground mulch. It can be used for weed and erosion control.

The hardy material such as stumps or storm damage wood will pass through the grinder two times to become our super natural mulch. The twice-ground wood produces mulch at the right consistency where it can be set aside to age. This process turns the mulch into a darker colored material. This super natural mulch is used in landscapes for erosion control, water retention for plants and trees, as well as increasing the curb appeal of your home or business.

The smaller particles such as sawdust, bark, leaves, weeds and green plants are set in the compost area where it breaks down into fortified compost. This product is used for amending soil for gardens, lawns and plants.

Our mulch and compost are available for pick up to fill orders as large as tractor trailers or as small as a burlap bag. The lumber from our mill supports local businesses such as ax throwing, furniture builders, artists as well as DIYers.

What Can (and Can’t) Be Recycled in 2019 By: Vogel Disposal Service

Despite all of the changes this year, recycling remains an important effort in preserving our planet and environment. The new limitations simply mean working to be more conscious of what we throw out and what we send on to be recycled. By working together, we can ensure all of our recycling makes it to the right place...and not back into a landfill. Below is a quick and handy guide to help make adjusting your recycling habits easy and straightforward.

Building a More Sustainable and Healthy World By: Chatham University Eden Hall Campus

Nestled on 388 acres of rolling woodlands and fields in Richland Township, PA, you will find the world’s first university campus designed to be a showcase for sustainable solutions. With the campus serving as an educational canvas, faculty, students, and the public engage in a collaborative, hands-on approach to learning to develop tomorrow’s leaders in sustainability.

Built from "below the ground up," Eden Hall is an experiential campus that immerses today’s students, children, families, communities and life-long learners in the possibilities of tomorrow. It is a vital, interdisciplinary laboratory designed to support collaboration between leaders and learners, academia and business, and the arts and sciences. Here we develop scalable tools and ideas that will drive data-based decision making across the social, economic, and environmental issues we will all face together, and implement them when applicable to not only exhibit their potential, but also serve as an inspiration for the community.

Eden Hall is an academic community dedicated to sustainable living and the modeling of sustainable approaches to energy, water, food and agriculture, air quality and climate, and the interaction of natural and built systems.

Energy Over 400 large solar panels generate 126,000 kilowatt hours annually, enough to power 14 homes for a year. Energy that does not get used feeds back into the public electric grid, and Chatham gets an energy credit for the future. Also, each building is monitored to determine energy consumption to see what works and what doesn't in the course of day-to-day activities.

Water Stormwater is managed by five rain gardens that collect and direct water flow to gravel walkways that make it easier for rainwater to reach the soil below, and a rainwater harvesting system that gathers and cleans the water and then uses it for crop irrigation. Eden Hall also treats wastewater onsite through a six-step process that mimics nature. The system can handle up to 6,000 gallons each day.

Food and agriculture A working agricultural classroom, Eden Hall allows students to explore critical relationships between food, land, the environment, access, and culture. Encompassing a fully certified organic farm, demonstration garden, and greenhouses (one heated year around by solarthermal panels), faculty and students demonstrate different sustainable agricultural practices, produce food for the campus, and practice food cultivation and marketing.

Air quality and climate Eden Hall's weather station collects data on solar radiation, air temperature, precipitation, wind speed and direction, and leaf wetness. Soil sensors are installed nearby to collect data on items like volumetric water content and electrical conductivity.

Natural and built systems Eden Hall functions as a demonstration site, modeling a variety of building standards, energy management techniques, and new ways of sustainable living. Buildings are constructed to meet LEED (Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design) Platinum certification, and some future buildings are planned to be built to Living Building Challenge standards.

Chatham University, as a whole, has been committed to advancing sustainability through education, operations, and innovation. And Eden Hall Campus has helped us take that to the next level. Our practices and the campus have garnered international recognition for advances in sustainability.

The Small Business Health Care Tax Credit If you're a small business owner with fewer than 25 full-time equivalent employees you may be eligible for the small business health care credit.

What is the Small Business Health Care Credit?

The small business health care tax credit, part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act enacted in 2010, is specifically targeted to help small businesses and tax-exempt organizations provide health insurance for their employees.

Small employers that pay at least half of the premiums for employee health insurance coverage under a qualifying arrangement may be eligible for this credit. Household employers not engaged in a trade or business also qualify.

How Does the Credit Save Me Money?

The tax credit is worth up to 50 percent of your contribution toward employees' premium costs (up to 35 percent for tax-exempt employers). The tax credit is highest for companies with fewer than 10 employees who are paid an average of $27,100 or less in 2019 ($26,600 in 2018). The smaller the business, the bigger the credit is.

For example, if you have more than 10 FTEs or if the average wage is more than $27,100, the amount of the credit you receive will be less.

Note: The credit is available only if you get coverage through the SHOP Marketplace.

Here's an example: If you pay $50,000 a year toward workers' health care premiums--and you qualify for a 15 percent credit--you'll save $7,500. If you save $7,500 a year from tax year 2017 through 2018, that's a total saving of $15,000. And, if in 2019 you qualify for a slightly larger credit, say 20 percent, your savings go from $7,500 a year to $10,000 a year.

Is My Business Eligible for the Credit?

To be eligible for the credit, you must cover at least 50 percent of the cost of single (not family) health care coverage for each of your employees. You must also have fewer than 25 full-time equivalent employees (FTEs), and those employees must have average wages of less than $50,000 a year. This amount is adjusted for inflation annually and in 2018 was $53,200.

Let's take a closer look at what this means. A full-time equivalent employee is defined as either one full-time employee or two half-time employees. In other words, two half-time workers count as one full-timer or one fulltime equivalent. Here is another example: 20 half-time employees are equivalent to 10 full-time workers. That makes the number of FTEs 10, not 20.

Now let's talk about average wages. Say you pay total wages of $200,000 and have 10 FTEs. To figure average wages, you divide $200,000 by 10--the number of FTEs--and the result is your average wage. In this example, the average wage would be $20,000.

Can Tax-Exempt Employers Claim the Credit?

Yes. The credit is refundable for small tax-exempt employers too, so even if you have no taxable income, you may be eligible to receive the credit as a refund as long as it does not exceed your income tax withholding and Medicare tax liability.

Can I Still Claim the Credit Even If I Don't Owe Any Tax This Year?

If you are a small business employer who did not owe tax during the year, you can carry the credit back or forward to other tax years. Also, since the amount of the health insurance premium payments are more than the total credit, eligible small businesses can still claim a business expense deduction for the premiums in excess of the credit. That's both a credit and a deduction for employee premium payments.

Can I File an Amended Return and Claim the Credit for Previous Tax Years?

If you can benefit from the credit this year but forgot to claim it on your tax return there's still time to file an amended return.

Businesses that have already filed and later find that they qualified in 2016 or 2017 can still claim the credit by filing an amended return for one or both years.

The Boy Scouts of America believes and, through nearly a century of experience, understands that helping youth puts us on a path toward a more conscientious, responsible, and productive society.

Locally, the Boy Scouts of America, Laurel Highlands Council, serves nearly 17,000 youth members and 5,000 volunteer adult leaders throughout its multi-state footprint in Western Pennsylvania, Western Maryland, and parts of West Virginia.

The Boy Scouts of America, Laurel Highlands Council aims to beneficially involve every eligible child and his or her family in the fun and adventure of our programs.

We will provide extraordinary youth development programs that: strengthen values, develop leadership skills, provide lifelong learning and instill the habit of service to others.
