DIRECTOR’S NOTE Look down! Look down!... Oh… you already are! When I was 17, my mother and father had saved enough money for a senior trip to London for the three of us. We saw Buckingham palace, Stone Henge, Bath, Shakespeare’s Globe, and even spent a portion of our trip in Paris to visit the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre. All of these were amazing experiences that I’ll never forget. However, nothing could prepare me for one of the greatest theatrical experiences of my life. My mother took me to see Les Misérables at the Palace Theater in London’s vibrant West End. After the performance, I met the incredible actors at the stage door, and begged my mother to buy tickets to a matinée performance the next day. That’s right, I saw it twice! Les Mis is not only one of the greatest musicals of all time, but it is also timeless. Its themes include defining right and wrong, contemplating a higher power, extremely wealthy versus critically impoverished, the
future of a nation, and above all, “to love another person…”. These themes continuously captivate and inspire audiences around the world. The social and political relevance of Les Mis also cannot be overlooked. Partially set during the July Rebellion of 1832, the students of Paris look to replace an insufficient leader of their country. Many voices have risen over the past 10 years in our own country, leading to controversial ideas and, at times, conflict. But, the objective remains the same: change. Positive change is what we all strive for to make a better future for those that live after us on this Earth. I hope that this particular production not only inspires you all as audience members as a piece of art, but illuminates the students of PMT Conservatory to think for themselves, and continue developing as individuals despite what the ever changing landscape of this world may throw at them.

CONSERVATORY Les Misérables School Edition features young artists from PMT Conservatory in collaboration with the CAPA orchestra. PMT Conservatory is the arts education entity at Pittsburgh Musical Theater that offers year-round training, mentoring, and performance opportunities for students ages 4-18. Our approach to arts education and opportunities are fuel for learning, building transferable life skills, community, inclusion, and becoming a

...not just on a stage, but in life! The foundation of PMT’s mission is built on arts education, development, mentorship, and providing performance opportunities for young artists. Students at PMT Conservatory receive a truly unique experience to use their training in fully produced productions of their own in which they take on roles as performers and technical theater crew. Whether a student wishes to pursue a career in the arts or another field, Young Artist Productions provide an opportunity for growth and building transferable life skills in our future leaders.
