NEIGHBORHOOD COMMITMENTS Pitt’s Neighborhood Commitments are the University’s flagship placebased community partnerships.

The commitments, focused on the Oakland, Homewood, Hill District and Greater Hazelwood neighborhoods of Pittsburgh, provide long-term commitments of staffing, infrastructure and coordination to facilitate mutually beneficial collaborations between Pitt and the local community.

The Oakland neighborhood commitment is anchored by the Pittsburgh campus.

The Homewood and Hill District commitments are anchored by Community Engagement Centers (CEC)—vibrant, welcoming facilities that facilitate engaged scholarship, engaged learning, capacity-building and economic inclusion.

A third Community Engagement Center is planned for the Greater Hazelwood neighborhood, which will have a priority focus on harnessing the nearby life sciences corridor (and BioForge) for communityscale opportunities in education, workforce development and inclusive community development.

COMMUNITY Acting as a front door to Pitt, the Community Engagement Centers offer a vibrant and welcoming space to foster collaboration and house services, programs and staff dedicated to the neighborhood. The CECs crystalize the University’s neighborhood commitment over a period of at least 20 years.

Based in the Pittsburgh neighborhoods of Homewood and the Hill District, the CECs do not duplicate the programs and services already found in the community.

Instead, the activities and programs offered through the CECs are designed to complement and enhance what is already available.

This five-year retrospective celebrates this work, highlighting many of the partnerships made possible through the dedication of Pitt faculty, staff and students and community partners.

OFFICE OF ENGAGEMENT AND COMMUNITY AFFAIRS The Office of Engagement and Community Affairs (ECA) is the core unit at the University of Pittsburgh with responsibility to advance a community engagement strategy for the University, to ensure that Pitt is a partner and asset to the region, to mobilize the University’s response to community-identified problems and concerns and to support faculty and staff in delivering sustainable and substantive engagement and outreach activities.

OFFICE OF UNIVERSITY RELATIONS The Office of University Relations aims to act as a strategic leader and collaborative partner regionally, in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and around the world; champion University initiatives and strategic priorities to amplify their impact and strengthen Pitt’s brand; spearhead programs and campaigns that drive and grow Pitt’s global reputation; represent and facilitate advocacy for the University’s interests; and serve as a trusted resource and advisor for all corners of the University.

In addition to ECA, University Relations includes the Office of Government Relations and Advocacy and the Office of University Communications and Marketing.

THE GISMONDI FOUNDATION COMMITS TO MORE THAN $1 MILLION TO SUPPORT PITT’S COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT EFFORTS | OCTOBER 2023 The Gismondi Foundation—created by Pitt trustee John Gismondi and his wife, Lisa—has topped the $1 million mark in giving to the University of Pittsburgh to strengthen and expand the educational support it provides in school and out of school across its Neighborhood Commitments.

The Gismondi Neighborhood Education Program creates the core infrastructure and staffing necessary to sustain and grow elementary school and community-based organization partnerships in Pitt’s Neighborhood Commitment areas; lowering barriers to family participation in various out-of-school-time programs through support, including transportation and 4

meals; hiring and training Pitt School of Education students serving as tutors; expanding access to an instructional coach to assist tutors and enrichment providers to produce culturally centered, developmentally appropriate content; and much more.

By generously expanding their support, we are significantly expanding our impact in other communities,” said Lina Dostilio, vice chancellor of engagement and community affairs.

SPENDING, INVESTING AND SUPPORTING LOCALLY

PATHWAYS TO PITT EMPLOYMENT:

Pitt is determined that opportunity can and will be more widely shared in Pittsburgh. At the CECs and across the Neighborhood Commitments, that means spending, investing and supporting not just local business but Black- and minorityowned business.

Navigating employment opportunities at large institutions like Pitt can be overwhelming, but Celiwe Jones is here to help.

In renovating the Homewood CEC, 40% of contracts were with minority and women-owned businesses.

In partnership with the Institute for Entrepreneurial Excellence’s Small Business Development Center, the CECs provide a space and resources for entrepreneurs to learn, grow and collaborate, such as through the Community Power to Prosper program.

These programs also provide the opportunity for small business owners and entrepreneurs alike to obtain the tools necessary to compete for business at Pitt and beyond.

Workforce Development at Pitt’s CECs

As Pitt’s workforce development career counselor, Jones offers career counseling, application assistance, and workshops to connect residents of the Hill District, Homewood and, soon, Greater Hazelwood with job opportunities at Pitt.

For Jones, it’s about more than “just the job,” it’s about “creating a pathway for career opportunities.”

Serving as a liaison between residents and the University, she works to break down the barriers that residents may face when considering employment at Pitt. “We don’t want anyone to feel like they’re being left out.”

Through direct support based on individual and community needs, Jones guides applicants through every aspect of the job search process, from discovering their interests to submitting applications to preparing for an interview.

Her holistic approach to workforce development doesn’t just place people in jobs, it seeks opportunities for longevity and growth so that residents can have “pathways to fruitful careers.”

The CECs are staffed by small but mighty teams of four: a director, an outreach coordinator, a receptionist/administrative assistant and a welcome attendant.

Together, CEC staff help facilitate partnerships between the community and University.

Connecting Pitt faculty and students with community partners brings the CECs to life.

Integral to the inner workings of the CECs, also, are the Neighborhood Advisory Councils in Homewood and the Hill District comprised of residents and members of community organizations. These groups of people help ensure that the community has a stronger say in how the University shows up by providing a forum for insights and co-creation of community-engaged projects.

“I love my job; every day is different.”

Raub Robinson has been with the Homewood CEC since its opening in 2018 and as much a staple of the CEC as the building itself. As the Welcome Attendant, Robinson ensures that each visitor to the CEC has a safe and welcoming experience.

Today will be a full day at the Homewood CEC, starting with the Institute for Entrepreneurial Excellence welcoming a new cohort of local small business owners to their business development program, Community Power to Prosper.

Later in the afternoon and evening, the CEC transforms into a welcoming haven for parents and children for a series of family activities in collaboration with one of Pitt’s community-based partners, Homewood Children’s Village (HCV).

Filling the CEC with nearly 75 family members, HCV family nights provide family-strengthening programming provided by both community organizations and Pitt partners. After enjoying dinner from a local eatery, students and faculty from the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS) will provide families with fun health activities,

along with the Mindfulness for Families program, a partnership between Pitt’s Center on Race and Social Problems, Awaken Pittsburgh and HCV. But when Robinson comes to work at the CEC tomorrow—and the next day, and the day after that—it will look a little different. Maybe it’s 50 first- through fourth-graders excitedly, and loudly, creating a rollercoaster through PittEnrich. Or maybe it’s a little quieter as community members puzzle their next move at the Homewood Chess Club.

Either way, it’s full of opportunities for the community to collaborate and connect.

VACCINE CLINICS FOR HOMEWOOD RESIDENTS | NOVEMBER 2021 In all, more than 100 people received COVID-19 and flu shots at a four-hour long clinic hosted at the Homewood CEC on Nov. 15, 2021. The efforts continued on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, with appointments scheduled to serve more than 360 members of the Homewood community.

A FRONT DOOR TO PITT OPENS IN HOMEWOOD | OCTOBER 2018 As a kid growing up in Pittsburgh’s Homewood neighborhood, Marcus Poindexter could see Pitt’s Cathedral of Learning from his bedroom window, but the opportunity to learn there seemed out of reach for a long time, he said. It’s an experience he knows a lot of kids from Homewood share.

Clinics held earlier this year vaccinated more than 2,000 people in the communities of Homewood and the Hill District.

HOMEWOOD CEC: PHASE TWO | SEPTEMBER 2022 More than 150 people from Homewood and the Pitt community attended a celebration in Sept. 2022 for “phase two” of the CEC, which includes the SHRS Wellness Pavilion, as well as an additional classroom, conference room, and more. Phase two officially completed and opened in early 2020, but celebrations were delayed due to the pandemic.

Since 2019 and in partnership with The Gismondi Foundation, PittEnrich welcomes first- through fourth-graders to the Homewood CEC for fun and lively learningthrough-play sessions.

“We didn’t come into Homewood, saying, ‘Pitt knows what Homewood needs,’ ” said Kathy Humphrey, former Pitt senior vice chancellor for engagement. “We didn’t come into Homewood making a decision about what we need to do in Homewood. We came in here, and we worked with the community.”

In 2022-23, 631 students participated in 3,150 tutoring hours.

REDUCING THE STIGMA AROUND MENTAL HEALTH | MAY 2023 “Because I’m on the ground and in conversation with residents, what became evident to me is that mental health care is lacking in the Homewood area,” said Channing Moreland, former director of the SHRS Wellness Pavilion at the CEC in Homewood, adding, “this is a discussion that people of color historically haven’t talked about.”

In 2021, with funding from the Pitt Innovation Challenge, Moreland and Department of Counseling and

Behavioral Health faculty members Laura Dietz and Quiana Golphin created TRIBUTE: Training Religious Leaders In Bereavement Counseling to Upskill Treatment Experiences. The premise of TRIBUTE is simple: Relying on church leaders in Black communities will reduce the stigma associated with accessing treatment and normalize conversations about mental health.

On a crisp Saturday morning in October, a van full of ghosts and superheroes have just entered the CEC in the Hill District.

community, will attend a program completion ceremony where they will receive certificates of completion and stipends.

The costumed group are students participating in STEAM Saturday, a collection of educational programs delivered by Pitt students and offered to third- through eighth-grade students. The program aims to increase confidence, problemsolving skills, technology skills and interest in STEAM careers through engaging lessons and hands-on experiences.

“I love this part of our work, awarding stipends to participants who stayed the course and worked hard to finish strong,” said Mack.

STEAM Saturdays has grown rapidly since it began in 2021 and now includes transportation and a second program site within the Oak Hill community center.

While the costumed youth and Pitt students collaborate on the day’s activities, Kali Mack, Administrative Assistant/Receptionist, is making preparations for another set of learners; next week, participants in the Rehab Neural Engineering Lab adult computing programming course, which specifically teaches Python to adults in the

SPARKING CURIOSITY WITH STEM | JUNE 2019 When Ameena Bradford entered Pitt’s Center for Biotechnology and Bioengineering, she didn’t know what went into the creation of a video game, but she was excited to see what was in store. What the 12-yearold Pittsburgh public school student found was a reignited interest in science and technology, with the help of a classic arcade game.

Special focus on digital inclusion and STEAM education

A BRIDGE TO THE COMMUNITY | JANUARY 2021 Bringing Pitt to the people is Communiversity, a series taught by Ervin Dyer and hosted by the Hill District CEC, which connects students in Dyer’s Introduction to Africana Studies course with community members in the Hill District and spans topics from ancient Africa to the life of Frederick Douglass.

“Bringing students and community members together allows both to mutually benefit,” said Yolanda Covington-Ward, chair of Pitt’s Department of Africana Studies.

“The community is able to access a set of skills and expertise that they perhaps they didn’t have access to, but at the same time, the students benefit from seeing beyond the classroom.”

Ameena and 14 other students from the Hill District put their coding skills to the test to recreate the 1978 game Space Invaders in June 2019, using a computer program provided by Pitt’s Swanson School of Engineering and the School of Computing and Information.

The coding exercise was part of a three-day STEM mini-camp hosted by Pitt’s CEC in the Hill District as part of the larger Swanson School’s annual Camp BioE.

CELEBRATING ONE YEAR OF PARTNERSHIPS | JUNE 2022 About 100 Hill District residents, community partners and members of the Pitt community gathered on June 4, 2022 at the Hill District CEC’s temporary home in the Blakey Center to reflect on the center’s contributions and celebrate the partnerships and services that have helped it thrive.

The celebration commemorated the anniversary of the Hill District CEC’s soft opening in 2021 and the 2019 Community Forum.

CLOSING THE DIGITAL DIVIDE | JANUARY 2023 The Hill CEC’s Digital Inclusion Studio is a partnership with Pitt Information Technology, the School of Computing and Information, the Swanson School of Engineering, Pitt Bio Outreach and several student organizations, and with support from Neighborhood Allies Digital Inclusion program, the Digitalstudio has offered programs such as Information Technology 101 for high schoolers, adult programming, grant writing and some community courses through Pitt.

HISTORIC NEW GRANADA GROUNDBREAKING | MAY 2023 The Hill Community Development Corporation kicked off the start of its construction and renovation project for the historic New Granada Theater and surrounding spaces with a groundbreaking ceremony in May 2023.

The building is set to be the future home of the Hill District CEC.

Pitt will serve as an anchor tenant, offering a STEAM studio, classrooms, offices, additional spaces and programming for the Center for African American Poetry and Poetics, the School of Social Work, Jazz Studies and computer literacy efforts.

Neighborhood Commitment to

GREATER HAZELWOOD

“Our most important asset is our people.”

Heidi Ward, Director of Planning for Community and Life Sciences Integration in Greater Hazelwood, knows that it takes more than just resources to build meaningful relationships with the community. “The key ingredients are time and trust.”

Since Pitt initiated its Neighborhood Commitment in Greater Hazelwood in 2022, Ward, a Greater Hazelwood resident, and her colleague Sierra Mason, Project Manager, have been working on building those relationships.

Their ongoing work includes attending high-level community meetings, partnering for events, sharing information during tabling, shopping local and, most importantly, being a familiar face in the neighborhood.

“We show up with a smile on our face and aim to provide a welcoming space for all people to ask questions about our work,” said Ward.

Pitt has been a collaborator in Greater Hazelwood for over 25 years. Over the years, nine different schools at Pitt have partnered in and with the

neighborhood, including the School of Social Work who has been placing interns and field study students in the community since 1998.

Building on and strenghtening those decades of collaboration is Pitt’s neighborhood commitment; Pitt has developed and has been working with coalition teams of community, university, and systems thought partners and leaders.

This group has connected, and will continue to connect, with numerous community leaders and residents to identify the focus of Pitt’s neighborhood commitment in the next few years and help advance • Pre-K to 12 educational opportunities; • Workforce development pathways, and; • Inclusive community development.

WHY GREATER HAZELWOOD? Greater Hazelwood is a diverse and dynamic neighborhood with a rich history and a vibrant future.

Hazelwood Green will be at the forefront of Pittsburgh’s growth as a regional hub for robotics, advanced manufacturing and the emergence of a life sciences corridor.

As the neighborhood continues to evolve, the Greater Hazelwood Neighborhood Plan has a clear objective: develop without displacement.

To ensure development is in alignment with community goals, the University of Pittsburgh has committed to join existing community organizations to establish its next Neighborhood Commitment in Greater Hazelwood.

BUILDING BRIDGES WITH BIOFORGE | JUNE 2023 “The next chapter of our work together will build community opportunity through the life sciences, catalyzed by the BioForge,” said Lina Dostilio, Vice Chancellor for Engagement and Community Affairs.

Dostilio and a handful of University leaders participated in a Hazelwood Initiative meeting in June 2023 to discuss the upcoming BioForge project and existing community initiatives and services.

WHAT’S NEXT? Pitt is developing BioForge, a biomanufacturing facility with a focus on cell and gene therapy, on Hazelwood Green. Through meaningful connections with community leaders and residents, Pitt is working to identify how the field of life sciences can positively impact the Greater Hazelwood community.

This meeting was just one of many community meetings the group has participated in to discuss the BioForge facility and related Community Engagement Center being developed in Greater Hazelwood.
