MESSAGE FROM THE PITA PRESIDENT Dear Members, Friends and Participants; This 23rd Annual General Meeting of PITA marks another key milestone for PITA. For me, it’s an end of my term as President. After serving in the PITA Executive Committee from 2011 as Executive Member, and then from 2012 as Vice President and President from 2015, I am humbled of the opportunity to be of services to you all, and of the common objectives of PITA. The PITA AGM continues to be an important event for ourselves here in the Pacific, uniting all members in our common goals, and where we can learn and share from each other, hear on new developments, and formulate solutions. In addition, the AGM serves also as an essential time in the year that we reflect our efforts in the past years and discuss way forwards as group, to deliberate and decide on strategies, work plan and appropriating budget to implement them. Already with over 250 delegates registered from over 110 organisations in over 36 countries, from all key sectors in telecommunication, and with a great agenda and program put out by our team, there is no doubt in my mind of the many positive outcomes that will result. I would like to thank all of you for making this PITA 23rd AGM and Annual Conference another meaningful convening for all of us who are participating, the speakers, the sponsors, exhibitors, the advertisers and all those who contribute in kind. My specific thanks also go to the Honourable Ministers and the Government representatives whom by their participations and involvements engenders more holistic approach to common goals and needs in the Pacific, to the regional and international partner organisations, such as those present with us this week, namely ITU, GSMA, CTO, APT, APNIC, ICANN and UNDP, and also to all the Members of PITA, and last but not the least to my fellow colleagues in the PITA Executive Committee and the management. ABOUT PITA Historical PITA was formed in response to specific regional circumstances back in 1997 at the closure of the Telecom Technical Division of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, with the goal for providing a forum for those involved with telecommunications in the Pacific to exchange experiences, to help formulate solutions relevant to the region, to provide training opportunities and the regular exchange of information, and to be a Pacific voice in the international communications environment. In the inaugural AGM in 1998, PITA was formally established with an office based in Suva and a Manager appointed.
WHAT IS PITA? PITA is a non profit organisation, formed to represent the interests of the small island states and countries in the Pacific in the field of telecommunications OBJECTIVES The objective of PITA is to improve,promote,facilitate,develop and provide telecommunication services within member and Associate member countries MEMBERSHIP PITA Members are telecommunication entities in Melanesia, Micronesia, Polynesia, Australia and New Zealand. Associate members are suppliers of telecommunication equipment and services. Partner agencies are regional and international organisations with vested interests in the telecommunications and its development in the Pacific Islands. Telecommunication Regulatory bodies have special membership category. Current membership = 190 Total Number of Countries = 36 (including 22 Pacific Islands States & Territories) ACTIVITIES PITA has two main meetings organised for members during the year.The first meeting is held one day prior to the start of the PacificTelecommunications Council conference held every January in Honolulu, Hawaii.The second meeting is its Annual General Meeting usually held in March or April before the start of a new financial year Other activities include Workshops,Training and Technical Cooperation between developing member countries as organised in an annual workplan. Where requested by members or when the opportunity arises, other events and activities can be planned outside these meetings, workshops and training, and can be held at different times of the year. PITA supports joint events with other organisations in the promotion of telecommunications development and for cost savings, event can be held back to back. Attendance to any PITA event is open to all members with minimum or no registration fee. PITA does not provide fellowship for participation at any event. Satellite technology offers Pacific Island Telecommunications and ISP operators a broadband solution which is fast, flexible and tailored for Pacific geographies and needs. Hijacking This presentation will discuss TNZI’s response to emerging types of fraud that are impacting Pacific Island Telco revenues. TNZI has offered a fully managed fraud alerting system to the Pacific Island Telco’s for over 8 years focused on detecting fraudulent traffic being generated and sent out of your network (PBX hacks etc). We have recently launched a new service that scans the international wholesale market for low rate offers to your home networks and sends test calls via these operators in order to detect sim bypass routes or short stopping (number range hijacking). This service is being utilized by network owners and regulators in Asia, Africa, and several of the Pacific Islands. The finite resource of radio spectrum needs to be carefully managed today, with a long-term view of 5G and beyond.
