FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK ❤️Tis the month of love. Love is in the air, in the souls, in the eyes, spinning everywhere. It leads one to ponder…. what is love? Well, supposedly, love is those “butterflies” you feel in your stomach when you first see the”one”. Love is the utter sense of purpose you get when you are around them. When you know it is meant to be. Ah, yes, love can be that but just like other words, it too has different meanings. ❤️Love can be the knowing smile using which you communicate a page worth of words with your best friend when words cannot be spoken. Love is the many number of instances your friend and you have forgiven each other; working past major problems to make sure you never lose each other. It is when your sighs, tears and thoughts are read in plain sight. It is when you can meet only once in two or twenty years and talk about those same incidents again and again. It is when you go to the same place for the umpteenth time, the place where everybody knows you two, and create a coccoon for yourselves; where the outside world with all its cruelty cannot even dare to touch this glorious bubble you occupy. ❤️Love is those two people who love you before you even arrive on this planet. The ones who see how others struggle through life after having kids and decide, “Yep! We want children for whom we will run to the corners of the Earth and back even if they do not respect or remotely value us!” Love is all the times they have smiled and blinked back tears when you have spoken cuttingly vicious words knowing it is the hurt in you speaking, not you. They are the ones who love you at your worst; when you are a little less than a puppy which demands constant food, sleep and attention. Their selfless love only wishes to see you prosper in life. ❤️Love is in the doctors who toil day after day from morning to night, forgoing rest, nutrition and peace of mind to offer good health to people who really need it, knowing full well that at any moment of time they can be beaten and attacked by the ignorant public which has no qualms dishing opinions about subjects they have no idea about. ❤️Love is the nurses who keep tucking in and retucking in comatose patients; the ones who talk pretty thoughts to someone at the brink just so he can go ahead in peace.

❤️Love is the strong armywomen and armymen who stand at sub-zero temperatures saluting, shooting and shouting for their motherland; forced to fight over imaginary boundaries He never intended to make. Love is all the silent workers behind the scenes who sweep,arrange furniture, cook but never complain. Very often, we forget that these people are humans too. The barista serving coffee might have had a terrible exam the previous day; the lady sweeping could have just become a grandmother today. Do we talk to them? No. We pretend like they do not exist. Like they were born only to serve us! ❤️Love is our dreams, hopes and ambitions. We see galaxies bursting with stars, the cosmos beckons to us but we love being tethered to the familiar. Home is a place. Home is a person. I say choose what suits you. Take whichever definition of love you truly believe in and make it your own. Where love is concerned, identities, personalities, societal expectations do not even stand to matter. It is all about the way you feel about them. Our hearts have only one purpose. Keeping us alive. Love strengthens your belief in that one organ. Bundle up your love and scatter the sparkles all around you. ❤️Let the people who serve you get warm smiles and a grateful spirit. Let our soldiers know all the love and respect you have them by remembering a handful of those ones whose lives you now live. Let the nurses receive acknowledgment and sincere gratitude. Let the doctors know they tried their best and love them as humans who might make mistakes but are always determined to save lives. Let your parents know that you thrive only because they love and stand by you and that one day you will make them proud. Let your friend(s) know you love them and choose them everyday. ❤️P.S. That one person you have securely locked in your heart, let your love for that person out too. They deserve to know how wholeheartedly they are being loved by you. All humans crave is the human touch. Souls look to belong together; you never know when two halves will perfectly fit to complete the puzzle. Words of wisdom Professor Formanchuk Andriy Mykolayovych is an Associate Professor, Candidate of Medical Sciences and Associate Professor at VNMU at the Department of Surgery No1. We are very fortunate to have gotten the opportunity to talk to such a humble yet extremely talented teacher as well as surgeon this month. Professor Formanchuk is the founder of the isurge_on education platform and has hosted various surgical workshops where he has brought to light new procedures and operations for International students. 1.How long have you been teaching at VNMU? I graduated in 2007 and started practising and teaching from 2010. The first batch of students I taught were English speaking and knowing the language has always opened a lot of doors for me. 2.What are the surgeries that you witnessed while training ? While studying in Holland and Germany, I attended various complex surgeries in all areas be it abdominal surgery, wounds surgery, cancer surgery; by open, laparoscopic and robotic methods. I also passed practical masterclasses. 3. Tell us more about the isurge_on platform founded by you. What does it include? The one major goal I had in mind was hands-on-training. Usually medical students do not get the clinical experience they should. I realised that we have always enough theory practise but no clinical skills like they had in European countries like Germany where I studied. We wanted a platform which is accessible to students as well as genuinely informative. Our platform provides cost effective learning as all of our seminars are free for all participants. In case registered medical practitioners require certificates for programs, we provide those as well at a nominal fee. We have partners from Germany, India as well as the UK and hope to expand more. We are now working on to organise laprascopic masterclass for students too. IStitch was a unique workshop we organised where we used surgical thread, staplers and adhesive tapes as modern original suture materials. These are innovative techniques which are great and easy but sadly not popular at learning here. Electrocautering was another really interesting method we gave our students to try which is the thing of daily surgery nowadays at modern medicine. 4.Being an International magazine we have to ask what are some of the programs that you have organized which focus on International students? I equally love and adore both my International and Ukrainian students. We have brilliant minds who are capable of great things if only given the correct training. The sessions we organise with foreign doctors can be attended by anyone. They can type their questions on private chats or ask questions on video call. In fact, isurge_on is more focused on bringing international learning to all our students. We would love students to go to our platform and write down any suggestions for programs you wish to attend. We are always open for cooperation!

5 .What measures do you suggest to our students to make sure they learn practical skills in these times ? "Better to do it one time than watch it a hundred times.” No one will do anything instead of you. Even one practical class will improve the skill of a resident to make the “first bite.” It is important however, to start with the correct basics. If you learn something wrong, it is more difficult to unlearn it rather than learning something from the very grass root level. Once you learn the basics, you can buy materials even from the Internet and keep repeating these tasks at home. After all, a basic surgeon’s job is mechanical memory of hands. The more you repeat, the better you get. You can then someday, differentiate between simple and complex stitches for yourself. If you start reading the text behind a stitch after someone asks you to make a stitch then it is probably too late. 6. Some professional advice for our students. A doctor should have a sense of humour but be sensitive. We often use dark humour among colleagues to deal with painful situations but when facing a patient, judge what he/she needs; a friend or a doctor. You also act as a psychologist and once you wear a white coat, you are responsible for someone’s life. A person is terrified even for the smallest surgery so your job is to make sure they can trust you. Always be kind to your patients. Even if you cannot understand your patients, try to understand their needs. A slight overdose in our profession can be lethal. Once you wear the coat, you should be highly focused and check ten times before doing anything. Never joke about your patients’ weaknesses or anything other offensive things. Before each surgery, I make a plan of what the procedure includes. It helps to make thing clearer. 7.What should motivate a medical student? If you lack knowledge after six years of signing the contract, you miss out on the good life; you lose the competition. Life is cruel and if you do not want to think about if you will be able to afford food or shelter the next day, then you need to work. While learning, learn from the best, be it a student, or a experiensed nurse or surgeon. Better from surgeon, as for me )) Nothing can be learnt or achieved without initiative. The only truth you will gain is from your own experience. Each patient is unique and each decision you make will be your own. THE VOLUNTEERING AND CHARITY COMMITTEE IS AN INDEPENDENT STRUCTURAL UNIT OF THE STUDENT SELF- GOVERNMENT (STUDRADA). IT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SOCIAL SPHERE

ACTIVITIES. ANY UNIVERSITY STUDENT WHO ATTENDS THE MEETINGS AND TAKES AN ACTIVE PART IN ACTIVITIES ORGANISED BY THEM, CAN BECOME A MEMBER OF THE COMMITTEE.

THIS FEBRUARY, WE INTERVIEW THE VOLUNTEERING COMMITTEE AND GET TO KNOW THE AMAZING WORK THEY ARE DOING FOR THOSE LESS PRIVILEGED THAN US.

Ткач Інна - Head of the RCC Volunteering and Charity Committee. Would you like if there is greater participation from International students? How can new students join this Committee ? Of course. We are always open to cooperation and welcome like-minded people. Currently, there are only two foreign students in the Committee, but many foreign students join the charity events. We are convinced that in time there will be many more of them in our "volunteer family"! Joining us is quite simple, you can write to us on our official page on Instagram @volunteer_vnmu or write to the telegram bot RCC @ssvnmy_bot.

What is your philosophy of life? "When a little person does his little thing well, the whole world gets better." Therefore, I am convinced that to help others you do not need to be specially prepared, you just need to be attentive to everyone around you. And if you get an opportunity to help those who ask for help or need it never refuse.

Гриня Катерина - Deputy Chairwoman of the RCC Volunteering and Charity Committee. Why did you decide to join this initiative ? The answer to this question is extremely simple. I consider volunteering to be a part of my life. When I learned about this association at our University, I realized that I do not want to keep sitting around and listening to what others are doing but rather, go out and help people myself. I want to make every effort; to grab every single chance to save or improve someone else’s life. Have you always taken part in such community activities ? I have always tried to participate in activities when I knew that my strength could justify the result I wanted to achieve. Even before joining the University, I have always tried to take part in volunteering events whether as a part of an Organisation or not. This once again affirms that volunteering is a way of life. Цибень Марія - Deputy Chairwoman of the RCC Volunteering and Charity Committee Are there some new projects you're looking forward to ? Of course there are many! In particular, we are most excited for the trips to orphanages. Another novel project which will soon begin at our University is the sorting of waste according to Recycling norms. The implementation of most projects was suspended during the quarantine, so I am are looking forward to attending classes as well as projects in person once the situation improves. If you were given the chance , what would you change in the world ? I would like to change a lot, but we must remember that, first of all, we have to change ourselves, without waiting for them to give us a magic wand!

It has always been a great pleasure for me to work with the team for many years in a row during the organization of New Year's events. For example, our team helps to collect gifts from Santa for children who for one reason or another cannot feel parental warmth and care. We collect toys, coloring books, sweets, paints and plasticine and much more. For volunteers, it is quality time spent in the company of like-minded people, where you can also show your organizational or communication skills.

Sometimes however, we feel that our articulations won't possibly justify our yawning thoughts, and that we wouldn't be able to convey what we intend to. Therefore, unexpressed feelings fall into the bottomless pit of discarded seeds... and get lost, perhaps for a lifetime! In view of this, when the minds working at the back-end of the Pirogovka magazine sat down for a brief brainstorming session, an idea evolved. We were then completely taken by surprise at the amazing way in which you, our readers as well as students opened up your hearts and laid them bare for others to accept. Hoping to be Cupid’s messengers, we wish these messages give those who they are meant for happiness if not love; but let us know if we helped forge new bonds!

Rise Up Against the Odds... A MUST-READ INTERVIEW OF SOMEONE WHO'S BEEN ON THE SAME BOAT, AND HAS COME OUT STRONGER AND BETTER...

As Science students, we look for examples to prove any fact we come across. The correct example can make your life easier as well as help you to believe in that fact. The fact under question here is that Medicine is a profession fraught with challenges but there is no work more awarding; the example we share today is that of Dr. Shivam Pathak. Dr. Shivam graduated from VNMU in 2021 and appeared for the FMGE exam in December 2021 and scored 218 marks out of 300 in his first attempt itself. The question which comes to mind is what is the FMGE exam? – FMGE is the short form of Foreign Medical Graduates Examination which is supervised by the Medical Council of India. FMGE is a licensure examination that has been conducted by the National Board of Examination (NBE). This examination is one of the requirements for an Indian citizen who has qualified in the Undergraduate Medical exams in India but has a medical degree from a college outside India to practice medicine in the country. In order to qualify this exam one has to score a minimum 50% of the total i.e. 150/300.

Without further ado, let us dive into Dr. Pathak’s college life in his own words….. “College was the most memorable chapter in my life since it made me confident. The first year was quite difficult because I was out of my comfort zone and exposed to a whole new culture, language and people. Later as I got focused, I realised knowledge is more important than grades.”

The next burning question on my mind was his strategy to prepare for the exam..... “I started my preparation when I was in my 4th year. I had Marrow notes and I finished 5 short subjects in the span of 10-15 days. I then did past year questions of subjects and watched videos of FMGEs on YouTube or on Unacademy. I used to mark recurring topics in my notes and later only focus on these topics. I finished all the subjects except Medicine by mid-October. The important topics marked in my notes, made my second revision very concise and easy. I kept preclinical subjects like Anatomy, Biochemistry and Microbiology for the end as it was quite difficult for me to retain them for long. I integrated Cardiology – Physiology+Pharmacology+Medicine; Rheumatology – Pharmacology+Pathology+Medicine. Second round of revision - For this, I first focused on highly volatile points and topics, which i kept making mistakes in. In the final month , I solved PYQs and MCQs from Telegram channels and analysed the mistakes. I had pdfs made of images of different subjects, which I used in the last week. Overall, I revised the subjects 3 to 4 times. I did not attend any coaching classes or pay for any app. Free classes on Unacademy were a gift for the subjects that i struggled in. I gave 3 test series on Marrow.

Some pearls of wisdom by the pathfinder on do’s and don’t’s... • Find a source that suits you • Make a schedule of topics and stick to the time allotted to it • Do not leave out entire subjects • Focus on the quality of time spent rather than the quantity • Have a bunch of friends with whom you can discuss your target for the day, and about his/her approach when the going gets tough towards the end • If you do not feel like studying, avoid active studying and switch to watching Youtube videos of tests and discussions

If you are still in college then you should keep these points in mind to stay focused.…. • Get up and go to classes well prepared to finish your subjects as soon as possible • Learn the language and mingle with the locals • Keep yourself fit and healthy. Learn to cook- it does save a fortune! • Start researching your goals after KROK 1 • Whether it is FMGE or NEXT, the syllabus will remain the same so just keep studying • Talk to Seniors. After all, experience is the best teacher.

What are his future plans? I have always liked the rush of surgery. Therefore I would love to pursue surgery as my PG subject. I am leaning more towards pursuing futher studies in UK rather than India, but only time will tell. Currently, I am looking forward to start my internship and get enough clinical exposure to choose a field.

The Cape of Hope Recap – In the first chapter, Ambar received a phone call from a private number, hours after he had lost both his parents due to COVID-19 infection, as he sat silently beside the colossal Christmas tree at the entrance to Shekhawat Super-Speciality Hospital. He wasn’t particularly sad, as he never really felt close to either of them. The speaker at the other end seemed authoritative and decisive in the choice of his words, and claimed to be Ambar’s grandfather. After a brief discussion on what Ambar must pursue as a career, he asks him to get ready to embark on the journey of becoming an International Medical Graduate, from Ukraine.

Chapter 2 - The Sudden Realisation “Ladies and gentlemen, in the next 45 minutes, we’ll be landing in Boryspil International Airport, Kyiv; the temperature over there is 3֯C, and it is mostly sunny with a few speckled clouds. Wind speed is 19.4 km/h.” were the words Ambar woke up to, after an extended sleep session, since he was on-board. The same lines began ringing in Ukrainian, for the suitability of the other passengers, when a fine, young lady walked conscientiously towards the vacant seat beside Ambar’s. “I apologise… My seat is 23B… a mother with her child is adjusting herself inconveniently on the next seat. I presume this seat is unoccupied… would it be a problem if I sat here for the remainder of the flight?” she asked as humbly as she could. For a moment, an uncanny smile flushed Ambar’s face, as he scanned through her. She appeared tall, stunning and extremely poised and confident in her conduct. He was however, quick to recollect himself and continue, “Not a problem in the least…! Please sit… you’re most welcome.” She went over to her former seat, and brought along her handbag. “Why didn’t you come over earlier?” Ambar wanted to know, once she had made herself comfortable. “Perhaps, I was waiting for you to wake up!” she replied. Both of them shared a smile. “Are you a student?” Ambar enquired. “Yes; going to study Medicine...” “Oh! Same here!” Ambar blurted with brimming exhilaration. “Is that so? Which college are you headed to?” The girl questioned. “VNMU… Vinnytsia; I suppose.” “That’s great to know! I’m going there too.” she said, continuing after a pause, “But… why do you suppose?” “It’s crazy actually… Both my parents are dead, and there was a person on the phone, claiming to be my grandfather. He had kept all these arrangements made, and I only had to collect my documents, pack my bags and hop into the flight!” She looked at him perplexed.

“I’m sorry… you must be so puzzled right now… I’ll explain things to you in detail once we land…” Ambar justified, ransacking the depths of his brain for her name at this point, just when he realised he hadn’t asked her name! “I’m… I’m so sorry… May I know your name?” “Yes; certainly. After sharing so much about yourself, that’s the least you deserve to know! I’m Vamika.” she answered disdainfully. Both of them shared a broader laugh, before Vamika resumed the conversation, “Pardon me for being intrusive here, but you sounded rather blunt about your parents’ death…” “I wasn’t that close to them. I had needs they wouldn’t understand.” “That’s what presents itself superficially sometimes… negligence, austerity and the like…” she elaborated. “As in?” “We always try to disguise our true emotions, and bury them deep within ourselves. It bestows us a sense of protection, for we think we cannot afford to bring them on the surface, as the increased vulnerability scares us… Hence, we protect that inner self, with a firm covering on the outside… only few can penetrate in a lifetime!” Ambar sat still for a while. “That was philosophical, indeed!” They laughed out aloud on this occasion, drawing a few pairs of eyes at them. “However… I think what you’re saying is true at some point too! I can’t deny that entirely… In my case, I think I failed to peel off those outer layers my parents had…” “Now that’s a good realisation for a start… I just wonder how it popped out of the blue magically…!” Vamika remarked with discernible scorn all over her countenance. Ambar looked outside the window, and observed visuals of buildings freckled on a green canvas. “We’re almost there…” He affirmed. “Listen; Vamika… since you’re the first person I’ve talked to in this journey… would you mind being alongside, until things are sorted…?” At this point, Ambar wasn’t sure anymore, if those were the words he wanted to use. Vamika looked exceedingly receptive at this, and smirked. “Only until things are sorted? That sound’s selfish!” she replied flippantly. “I mean… even after things are sorted.” Ambar corrected, slightly embarrassed. “Better!” As the enormous flight stroked the runway, all passengers shook a little before gathering themselves back. In a few minutes, everyone proceeded to grab their cabin bags from the overhead luggage tray, and the two new acquaintances followed suit. Both of them started moving towards the exit door, just when Vamika dropped her boarding pass – which she had been holding in the grip of her left hand. Ambar tried to pick it up for her, almost reflexively, but Vamika won the race, pouncing on it like a hungry lioness on her prey. Their eyes met, and Vamika smiled back at him, as they continued moving out in the queue. She skilfully slid the boarding pass into her handbag, hiding from view the following words:

Medicopedia The Broken Heart Syndrome A broken heart is not just a folklore! Broken Heart Syndrome is a temporary heart condition brought on by stressful situations and extreme emotions. N.B. Women are more likely to experience broken heart syndrome rather than men!! The common signs are (Caused by the surge of stress hormones like adrenaline) - Sudden chest pain, shortness of breath, and fainting.

Complications can be (Rare but known to occur) Hypotension, arrhythmias, heart failure, formation of blood clots within the heart due to weakened heart muscles, pulmonary oedema. The best way to prevent Broken Heart Syndrome is taking baby steps to manage emotional stress. This is important for the overall health of your heart.
