A reindeer herders working day No matter what weather, the reindeer herder must take care of his animals. This year they had to move the reindeers early from the coast to the mountains, because of the thin layer of ice covering the ground. Now the reindeers are fenced when they are waiting to be released higher up in the mountains. Xpress Arjeplog has met Jonas Jonsson that has moved his reindeers from Skellefteå to Arjeplog. - Since they couldn´t get food from the ground in Skellefteå we moved them closer to the summer pasture. Now I give them lichen, hay bales and pellets, so they will have all the nutrition they need. I visit them every day, to give them food and to make sure that they are alright. When I ask about the white reindeers, Jonas says: - Here in the North we have an unusal high ratio of white reindeers. They are more bullied and more sleepy than the others.

Sometimes when the herd has been lying down sleeping, and we are moving them on - the white ones can stay on the ground and I have to wake them up. They look very surprised when we pull their horns. A few of the reindeers have a GPS around their necks, so their hiking paths can be stored and you can see where they are. Jonas Jonsson, Maskaure Sami Community, is pulling down lichen for the reindeers to eat.
