Welcome to a new season of Xpress magazine, now including both Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur. We are two small municipalities, just an hour apart, and I think we benefit from close cooperation. Visitors to the area can enjoy food, activities and entertainment in both Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur.

If you have any ideas or suggestions for articles or information, please feel free to contact me.

Mayor Britta Flinkfeldt Arjeplog We, the Mayors of Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur, are happy to welcome you all to yet another season of automotive winter testing! You are important to us.

As you probably already have noticed, our municipalities (or “kommuner”, as we say) are huge when it comes to area but tiny when it comes to population. This is a challenge as we tax the few thousands permanent residents only, but still has to provide schools, care of the elderly, infrastructure, and more.

The magazine is published bi-weekly on Thursdays this season. It will be available in several shops, the tourist offices, Arvidsjaur airport and several proving grounds - or pick it up in the “Arjeplogarn” mailbox outside “Fjällgården Guns and Roses” in Arjeplog.

We have a long history spanning 10,000 years back to hunters and gatherers via the mining and forest industries to today’s prime test bed of high-tech systems, parts and vehicles. Now, we are the winter testing capitol of the world. You come here and you bring wealth, stories, expertise, inventions and ideas that helps our region develop.

Thanks to you, we have more entrepreneurs, more restaurants and more hotels than other municipalities of our size.

We respect your work ethics and admire the grit you display during your stay with us.

Still, we hope that you get some time off to see the northern lights, exercise in our skiing tracks, enjoy our downhill slopes, have some fun on a snowmobile, and to learn more about our culture. When you are in Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur, you are also in Sápmi, the land of the indigenous Sámi people that still engage in semi-nomadic reindeer herding and other traditional livelihoods.

Hedbergs Café In the middle of nowhere or in the centre of everything - as Susanne chooses to call it. Hedbergs Café is located in Hedberg - a small village located about 30 to 50 kilometres from Arvidsjaur, Slagnäs, Malå and Adak. Here has Pär Lundgren and his wife Susanne opened a cafe and make their own pizza in the bakery.

Why do you choose to open a cafe in a village of 15 inhabitants?

-Initially, it was a request from car test drivers, who needed a place to stop for a coffee break. But we built this business because it is social and because we wanted something to happen in the village, says Susanne. She is originally from Piteå and has run a pizzeria business earlier. She has a background as pastry chef, horse masseur, housekeeper etc, until one day the back gave in, and she had to consider another way of life.

The cafe is open from December to Easter.

They take group bookings for pizza throughout the year, but book at least one day in advance, or why not plan to hold your meeting in the cafe, drive snowmobile and stay for a pizza!

For the third year running, they are now looking forward to this winter season.

Family My family is from a village in Leicestershire, in the middle of England. My father, brother and sister are all still there along with cousins, aunts, uncles and my grandmother.

Home Arjeplog might as well be home, I spend more time here than in England!

Company Jaguar Land Rover.

Occupation I manage the Revi facility during the winter season, looking after all Engineering and Customer Ice Driving activities. I’ve been in this role for about 3 seasons now.

Favourite food A proper cup of tea and biscuits.... I brought about 1000 tea bags this year... that should last all December!

What about your job My main role is to manage the Revi facility and ensure everything is in place for the start of the season, plan and look after the different teams on site and to liaise with Galtis for anything we might need.

During the summer I travel to other test facilities to support when needed and develop Revi with any changes or requirements for the next season.

Present car Ford Ranger Pickup Truck but I use motorbikes more - I have a Ducati 999, Yamaha XV920 and Honda ST70.

Dream car Ford F150 Raptor, or Conny Långdahl’s Jeep.

Do you have a motto in life I think there are a few phrases I use a lot, but they wouldn’t be safe to print...

What’s important in life Making the most of life however you can, and experiencing as much as possible; In Arjeplog alone I’ve made local friends, been for a swim through the ice at the school, helped the Sami gather reindeer, hunted ripa, canoed from Miekak to Ornvik, broken down on a Polaris snowmobile quite a lot.... all things I never would have dreamed of doing!

Spare time activities I do a lot of shooting, building motorbikes and rock climbing back in England, but I’ve also been on a lot of expeditions around the world climbing mountains - this year I spent 6 weeks in Pakistan climbing a mountain called Trango Tower, with the biggest vertical face in the world. I’ve also climbed Mount Kenya in Kenya, Ama Dablam in Nepal, Aconcagua in Argentina and a few others.

Dreams about the future I have no idea, I like to just see what happens; I have a couple of expedition ideas for Africa and the Amazon but for work, I’m happy with my current job being here in Arjeplog - I couldn’t imagine getting a better job anywhere else!

The place you enjoy being most Arjeplog of course! And my garage back in England with a cup of tea, working on a motorbike.

A dream trip I’d love to travel around the islands in the South Pacific.

Do you have any special skills I can rock, ice and alpine climb, and I’m a pretty good shot when it comes to clay shooting.

Tell us a secret about yourself that you don’t think people know I fell into an abandoned mine shaft once and almost drowned... but I’ve almost been killed a few times but that’s one no one knows of!

Something you learned from your parents that you have passed on to your children (or future children) Based on having me as a child, I think it is wiser to get a dog and not have children...

Something you want to say to people in Arjeplog Thank you ever so much for letting us work in your home; the people are so positive and welcoming, I’ve made some incredible friends here over the past few years, and do consider it my second home now!

Did you know that... * Vehicle testing operations in Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur have a turnover of approximately 1.2 billion SEK each year.

* Our two small municipalities have both fared well in the national award for highest economic growth rate: - In 2016 Arjeplog came first and Arvidsjaur third.

Important in life Not to take everything for granted.

* When you meet a truck ploughing a

narrow road, you must: Stop at the nearest meeting point (“M” sign) or parking area (“P” sign), or reverse to nearest one. Narrow roads are not wide enough for you to meet, and you must give way to the truck.

If you end up behind a snowplough, the driver has probably noticed you and will let you pass as soon as possible.

* Most of the residents in Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur has experienced a cold summer and a rainy autumn.

Hopefully the winter will be better. It has already started with a heavy snow fall - with about 80 cm in three days! * Shell in Arjeplog and Circle K (earlier Statoil) in Arvidsjaur have both closed down their shops due to poor sales, but you can still fill up the gas at both stations.
