A celebration of sporting success

MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMISTRESS Each year we have the pleasure of gathering together to celebrate another 12 months at Pipers at our annual Speech Day. In anticipation of this year’s event I was reflecting on the many achievements of our students and it struck me that although we celebrate every year - a Pipers education is never truly reflected or encapsulated in just one year. Rather, it is shown through the girls who leave us at the end of Upper Sixth and the culmination of their learning journey with us. It is so much more than just the sum of the number of terms and years they spent at Pipers Corner, the classes they have attended, or the exams they have passed.

This led me to think about what exactly “education” actually is. It is interesting to look at the top ten skills which have been highlighted globally as those necessary for success in 2020 – complex problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, people management, coordinating with others, emotional intelligence, judgement and decision making, service orientation, negotiation and cognitive flexibility.

It is starkly clear than any school wishing to offer a relevant education – has to look further than just preparing their students for public examinations to deliver these skills, and this

is something I believe we do well at Pipers.

Indeed as you read through this term’s edition of Pipers Post you will see many examples of our commitment to supporting this aim.

It needs to be recognised that education does not happen overnight – it is not a sprint, with personal bests being achieved in a matter of seconds and minutes. Instead it is like a long distance individual run - when you start you cannot actually see your destination very clearly, and speed is less important than endurance and determination. It is perhaps only when we reach our destination that we realise the distance we

have covered and can be confident that we have been moving in the right direction all along.

I look forward to the many opportunities our students will have to develop in the next academic year.

Go, Go, Go Joseph!

This year’s Year 6 production was “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”, an energetic musical combining a huge range of musical genre from calypso to rock and roll, and country! Including all the classic songs such as, “Any Dream will Do”, “Close Every Door”, “Those Canaan Days” and “Go, Go, Go Joseph” the students did a fantastic job of bringing the show to life on the Arts Centre stage.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2018, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”, by composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice, is a re-imagining of the Biblical story of Joseph, his father Jacob, eleven brothers and the coat of many colours. The musical follows preferred son Joseph. After being sold into slavery by his brothers, he ingratiates himself with Egyptian noble Potiphar, but ends up in jail after refusing the amorous advances of Potiphar’s wife.

While imprisoned, Joseph discovers his ability to interpret dreams, and he soon finds himself in front of the mighty but troubled, Elvis-inspired, Pharaoh. Joseph’s solution to Egypt’s famine elevates him to Pharaoh’s right-hand man and reunites him with his family.

Head of Prep Drama and Production Director, Ms Bevan said “I have to be honest that ‘Joseph’ was not initially my first choice for this amazing group of Year 6 girls; however, the more I looked into it, the more I grew to love it and recognise the opportunities that the production gave to really show off all their talents. The girls have been incredible in the whole process leading up to it, and they have been astounding during the production week. The group are such a strong team and work so well together, an absolute dream to direct. I am incredibly proud of them!”

The Exhibition 2018

Further education and beyond In April we were delighted to welcome members of Lower Sixth and their parents to “Beyond Pipers 2018”.

The aim of the event was to inform them about the huge range of options available to them for further study when they leave Pipers Corner after completing their A Levels. Exhibiting at the evening were representatives from a selection of Higher Education institutions, as well as “A Star Future” (promoting International Study) and GAP360 (to talk about GAP Years).

The School became an Art Gallery in June when pieces of work from students of all ages went on show for our annual Art, Textiles and Design Exhibition.

Featuring a wide array of media from sculpture to pottery, jewellery, furniture, paintings and textiles work, the quality of work was testament to the hard work of both staff and students.

Themes for this year’s artwork included “Dark and Light” (GCSE), “Clothing” and “Reflection” (Lower Sixth, AS Level), “Perspective” and “Weathering” (Upper Sixth, A Level), “Under the Sea” (Prep) and “Henri Matisse” (Pre-Prep).

New for this year was the addition of a “Textiles Showcase”, staged in the Arts Centre Theatre, with girls wearing some of the items of clothing they had designed and made.

Head of Art, Mr Webber said, “This year’s exhibition was a fabulous reflection of the vibrant, creative talent that is in such abundance here at Pipers Corner. It was particularly pleasing to be able to exhibit a range of different genres and techniques, and for all year groups to have an opportunity to share a selection of the areas of Art that they have been studying throughout the course of this academic year.”

Down on the farm In July the Pre-Prep Department enjoyed a visit to Peterley Manor Farm where Farmer Roger showed them round and explained about all the various produce grown on the farm.

Following the tour, the girls had the opportunity to pick blackcurrants, redcurrants and raspberries, before ending their visit with a glass of apple juice, freshly made cookies and strawberries in the farm’s yurt!

Step into the NHS Four Year 9 students (Freya G, Cleony B, Zoe F and Christiana H) saw off competition from over 1700 other entries to win the Step into the NHS schools’ competition for the Thames Valley and Wessex region this term.

The challenge was to design an advertisement and job description for an NHS job. The group impressed the judges by creating an informative poster, highlighting the qualifications, job responsibilities and skills required to be a prosthetist.

When I grow up In the second half of term, as part of their Careers programme, Year 7 students came to School dressed in “Big Me” Mufti – so dressed to represent the job they would like to have when they finish their education and embark on a career.

The Mufti day followed two introductory sessions in previous weeks, when the students explored the range of different job roles that exist today and the many options that will be open to them in life. As part of this they considered the skills, qualities and qualifications required for different job roles. On the day there were a range of careers on show with girls representing a variety of roles including: Doctor, Lawyer, Artist, Footballer, Midwife, TV Reporter, Chef, Nurse and Explorer to name a few!

During assembly prizes were awarded to a girl from each Form who was named as the best dressed “Big Me”. The year group also used the event as opportunity to support the “Big Me” fundraising initiative from the charity Action Aid. Action Aid’s mission is to change children’s lives in the world’s poorest places. Each girl was asked to make a small donation and the students were very pleased to raise £80 for this extremely worthy cause. £80 is enough money to fund 40 children, who would not otherwise be able to access education, to go to school for over a month.

Skills for life This term girls in the Prep Department participated in English Speaking Board (ESB) Exams. ESB strives to inspire confidence and increase self-esteem through acquiring interactive speaking and listening skills. For their assessments the girls had to prepare and recite a poem and a piece of prose, give a presentation and answer questions from the examiner. The girls achieved a fantastic set of results with 7 Merits, 21 Merit Plus and 60 Distinctions!

The power of technology In ICT this term Year 5 have been at the cutting edge of technology, creating green screen videos about space and coding Lego WeDo space rovers to move and react to their surroundings!

The girls’ learning agility on what has been a challenging technical learning curve for them all has been impressive as they developed a range of fantastic skills which will prove most useful to them in our world of rapidly developing technology.

How to be a code breaker A group of intrepid Senior IT students went on an exciting IT trip to Bletchley Park in May. With a specific focus on online safety and security of data, there was a chance for the girls to get “hands-on” with an Enigma Machine when they participated in a “Codes and Ciphers” workshop, using mathematical encryption and encoding techniques that have been used throughout history, to solve a codebreaking challenge.

Plastic bottle boat challenge Pupils from Pipers joined over 6,000 primary school pupils from across the country in late June to take part in the Plastic Bottle Boat Challenge. The aim was to set a new Guinness World Record for the simultaneous launch of a flotilla of plastic boats in order to highlight the impact plastic waste is having on oceans and the environment.

We look forward to finding out if the attempt was successful later in the year.

Young Enterprise Pipers’ Young Enterprise Company “Out Of The Woods” were named joint Best Overall Company at the Buckinghamshire & Milton Keynes Young Enterprise County Board Finals in May. On the night the team won the Awards for Best Company Report and Best Company Interview. They were also Runner up in the Best Trade Stand category. The talented Pipers’ entrepreneurs moved on to the East of England Regional Finals in June and although they did not win it was a fabulous achievement to be part of the event.

Life as an Anglo-Saxon In May Pre-Prep went on a trip to the Chiltern Open Air Museum, an outdoor museum in Chalfont St Peter which tells the story of the unique history of the Chilterns through buildings, landscapes and culture.

The Museum’s mission is to rescue threatened historic buildings from the Chilterns and to preserve them for future generations. They have re-erected 35 rescued buildings to date, spanning 2,000 years of Chilterns architecture and including a reconstructed Iron Age roundhouse, built using data from an archaeological dig near Dunstable, and Medieval and Tudor barns. The Museum’s Victorian buildings include a working Victorian farm, toll house and forge, a tin chapel, vicarage room and newly-rebuilt wychert cottage.

From more modern times, their collection includes a 1940s Prefab, Nissen Hut and a Furniture Factory from High Wycombe.

Saxon artefacts displayed on the Lord’s table; writing in Latin with quills and ink, practising the writing techniques used by monks in early Anglo-Saxon England; handling straw and using a hammer to experience creating roof thatch for Anglo-Saxon dwellings, and exploring and playing some of the games played by AngloSaxon families including solving Anglo-Saxon riddles. The girls also learnt about the properties of clay and the history of brick, before having the opportunity to make their own bricks.

For their visit the girls focussed on Anglo-Saxon life and they enjoyed a range of activities including: creating Anglo-Saxon brooches using metal sheeting and small glass beads; writing with runes on a clay tablet; handling replica Anglo-

Exploring Buddhism In June we were delighted to welcome Soto Zen priest, Lana Berrington, to talk to Year 9 and 10 RS students about Buddhism and help them to understand more about Buddhist practices and beliefs.

Hosei Berrington follows Soto Zen Buddhism, the leading school of Zen Buddhism in which practitioners do not actively seek Enlightenment or Satori (the Zen Buddhism term for enlightenment), but rather they seek to fully experience every moment; that is, to be acutely aware of every action in the here and now.

The session began with a screening of the documentary film “Walk With Me”, a cinematic journey into the world of a monastic community that practises the art of mindfulness with Zen Buddhist master Thich Nhat Hanh. Following the screening there was a student-led discussion about what they had seen and a Q and A session with Hosei Berrington during which the girls has some very astute questions including:

“Has meditation become too commercialised?”, “Are there sexual inequalities in Buddhism?”, “What festivals do Buddhists celebrate?”

Head of RS, Mr McKain said, “Hosei Berrington is the best person I have heard speak about Buddhism. Refreshingly honest, she really challenged our students’ perception of Buddhism in the modern world. The GCSE textbooks certainly do not mention a female Buddhist priest who runs an AirBnB! I know that Lana was incredibly impressed with the knowledge our girls displayed through their questions at the end, and the students clearly enjoyed engaging with her and learning about her life.”

Interpretation through dance

Connecting across continents

Year 7 took part in a unique workshop in June combining sign language with dance in order to provide a new visual interpretation of a poem called “Anne Sullivan, Teacher of Helen Keller”

British Sign Language (BSL) is a very visual means of communicating through gestures, facial expressions and body language. It is the most commonly used form of sign language in the UK, as it creates a picture as opposed to spelling out the specific word.

The leader for the workshop was Hannah Wuermli, a sign language interpreter, who is fully qualified in BSL and SSE (sign supported English) and also knows Deaf/Blind Signing.

Her qualifications are in Theatre Arts and Deaf Studies and she used to work as an interpreter on children’s television channel CBBC. During the workshop the girls spent time breaking the poem up and learning to sign different aspects of it. As BSL is very expressive and emotive it lends itself perfectly to interpretation by dance. perspective the session was a great way to link dance with a completely diverse skill.

The resulting presentations were so impressive that the girls performed them to Year 8 and Year 9 in Assembly the following week.

Fiver challenge This term, girls in the Prep Department were challenged to take part in the “The Pipers Corner Fiver Challenge” with the aim of raising as much money as possible for the Prep charity, Rays of Sunshine.

The idea behind the Challenge was to provide students with a highly interactive, fun way of developing financial numeracy, resilience and teamwork. Participants had to set up a minibusiness and create a product or service they could sell or deliver at a profit and engage with their local community. The Challenge was not a competition to see who could raise the most money, rather an opportunity to demonstrate values such as creativity, confidence, resilience and determination.

Through the Generation Global programme students from the UK have the opportunity to communicate with other students across the world, sharing in facilitated video conferences which help them to understand the shared challenges of growing up in our globalised world.

their enterprise off the ground, working in a group or as individuals. They then had five weeks to make as much profit as they could from their fiver, whilst also aiming to engage with the local community.

Through their activities, which included car washing, cake and cookie sales, sales of garden photography, sales of homemade slime and the making and selling of dog treats, the girls raised an astonishing £5353.90. Added to the money raised for the charity through other Department activities the total amount donated to Rays of Sunshine was over £8600!

Head of Prep, Mr Leith, said, “I have been hugely impressed by the girls and their approach to this Challenge. The amount they have raised for the Prep charity, Rays of Sunshine, is phenomenal and they should all be extremely proud of themselves.”

Year 7 students welcomed local artist, Cally Trench, to school in July to lead a workshop exploring her techniques and inspirations. Cally, whose work which focuses on mapping and different viewpoints includes board games, time-lapse films, books, paintings and drawings, gave a demonstration of her current working style. The students then had a go at creating their own self-portraits using similar materials and methods.

Musical celebration Throughout the academic year our students are offered many opportunities to perform and share their talents with the rest of the school community.

One such opportunity was the Prep Department Music Concert which took place in April. It was a joyous evening of music-making from a variety of our younger vocalists and instrumentalists who delighted their audience with pieces from a wide range of genres.

New life At Pipers we regularly hold whole school services in order to provide an opportunity for the entire school community to come together and focus on a given theme. This term’s service, led by School Chaplain Rev. Meardon, focussed on “New Life”. The event included contributions from each section of the school including a lovely rendition of “From the Tiny Ant”

by Pre-Prep and an impressive dance choreographed and performed by a group of Year 9 girls.

Delving into history Year 5 enriched their understanding of British history in May when they spent an interesting day of discovery at Bentley Priory, the location of the Headquarters of Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain. The group tried their hand at plotting enemy raids and learnt about the important work of RAF Bentley Priory during the Battle of Britain. They also found out about the contribution made by the WAAF (Women’s Auxiliary Air Force).

Welcome back to Pipers Our Alumnae association, Cornerstones, is an amazing network of women who give their wealth of experience, support and friendship to each other over a lifetime. This term we were very pleased to have two opportunities to welcome a number of Pipers’ old girls back to School for a visit.

Magnificent Mulan The first half of the Summer Term came to a close in impressive fashion with a magnificent performance of “Mulan” from our Year 7 Drama Club.

The Drama Club members showed an impressive level of energy as they brought the action-packed show to life on the Arts Centre Theatre stage.

With some catchy songs, and ample opportunity for the girls’ comic timing to come to the fore, it was hugely enjoyable to watch.

Nurturing nature At Pipers we encourage all our students to think about the environment in which they live and the ways in which they can make our world a better place.

So in April it was no surprise to see members of Year 7 celebrating “Earth Day” by participating in a litter pick and picnic event at Prestwood Nature Reserve. Arranged in conjunction with the Chiltern Society, as well as collecting litter the girls also spent time counting cowslips and spotting birds.

Working on the wild side Pre-Prep girls discovered what it takes to be a successful photographer in early June when professional wildlife photographer, Drew Burnett, visited the Department. Mr Burnett travels the world to capture pictures of amazing birds and animals. He spoke to the girls in detail about his work, and showed them a range of pictures he has taken as well as encouraging them to take pictures in their own back gardens and to practise as much as possible.

In April, having recently reconnected on Facebook, a group of girls, who were at Pipers in the late 1960s/early 70s, contacted us to ask if it would be possible to come back and see how the school has changed since they were here. Our Head Girl and her Deputies thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to show our visitors around all the new facilities that have been added since their days at school. It was hugely entertaining to hear stories from Pipers’ past and share in their experience of being “Pipers’ girls”.

Then, in July, we hosted 25 old girls (leavers from 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017) at a very enjoyable Alumnae Drinks Reception in the Arts Centre.

It was lovely to see some familiar faces and find out, over a selection of canapés and cocktails, about the girls’ many successes at University and beyond. A number of our current Lower and Upper Sixth girls also attended the event so that they could find out more about what life after Pipers is like from girls who have been in the same position as they are now.

Carnegie Award debate There was a hive of activity in the Library in June, when over 60 students, representing seven local schools, joined 18 Pipers Corner students to discuss and debate the merits of the eight books shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal 2018. The Carnegie Medal is a prestigious children’s book award, awarded annually to the writer of an outstanding book written in English for children and young people. The roll-call of past winners includes: Arthur Ransome, C.S. Lewis, Terry Pratchett, Philip Pullman, Noel Streatfield, Sally Gardner and Penelope Lively.

This is the seventh year that local Buckinghamshire schools have met to discuss the shortlist and we were delighted to host students from Aylesbury Grammar School, Aylesbury High School, Sir Henry Floyd Grammar School, The Misbourne School, Beaconsfield High School, St Mary’s, Gerrards Cross, and Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School. The books shortlisted for this year’s award formed the basis of the day’s activities.

Within mixed groups of pupils from the different schools the students discussed which book they felt deserved to win and shared what they liked and didn’t like about each title.

Everyone then broke into teams for a general literacy quiz before regrouping to cast their votes and predict a winner for 2018.

It was very encouraging to see so much passion for literature, and to listen to the animated and well-constructed debates. The overwhelming winner on the day, with 40 votes was Will

Hill’s “After the Fire”. It was a fabulous event and everyone involved thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to immerse themselves in the shortlisted books and challenge their peers’ perspectives.

Sports News

Charity biathlon

Sports Day 2018 There was plenty of House Spirit on show in late June when we held our annual Sports Day and girls from Pre-Prep right through to Sixth From took on the challenge to compete in a variety of events on behalf of their Houses.

The day began with Junior Sports Day for girls in Reception to Year 4. Each girl performed a run, jump and throw, as well as competing in a number of other fun events. Selected girls then also took part in some distance running events, along with relays to end the morning.

Very well done to Milton House who were named as the Junior Sports Day champions at the end of the event.

In the afternoon the Senior Sports Day for girls in Year 5 to Sixth Form began with the traditional House parade, before the girls took to the track and field to compete in a variety of events including high jump, long

jump, javelin/vortex howler throw, shot put, and a range of sprint, distance and relay races.

The final result saw Milton House take home the Senior Sports Day trophy for an impressive fourth year in a row.

On a beautifully sunny April afternoon the entire Prep Department did fantastically well, taking part in an energetic biathlon event to raise money for the 2017/18 Prep Charity, “Rays of Sunshine”. The girls raced in their year groups, starting with a run around the school grounds followed by a swim in the Orchard Pool, with the distance varying depending on the age group.

Every member of the Department showed a huge amount of Pipers’ spirit, supporting a very worthy cause.

This year’s Senior “Victrix Ludorum Cup”, which is awarded to the girl who gains the most points in individual events went to Clara H (Year 10) and Olivia B (Year 8). The Year 5/6 “Victrix Ludorum Cup” was awarded to Maia G (Year 5).

It was a very fitting end to what has been a fantastic sporting year at Pipers.

Inter-House swimming

A celebration of sporting success The sporting community at Pipers came together in June for our annual celebration of sporting success. This year, due to the sheer amount of achievements throughout the school, the Awards were split into two sections, a Prep Ceremony and a Senior School Ceremony.

It has been a very busy and exciting sporting year at Pipers and the awards presented at both the Prep and Senior Ceremonies included Full and Half Colours, Coach’s Players of the Year, and Most Improved Players for each sport. A variety of other team and individual awards were also given out.

At the Senior Awards we were delighted to welcome, Rochelle Clark MBE to speak about her career as an England Rugby Player. Rochelle, better known to her teammates as “Rocky”,

earned the distinction of being England’s most capped rugby player in November 2016 (114 caps). By the end of the 2018 Women’s Six Nations, Rocky had moved on to 137 caps, having played at the top of the game since 2003. During her speech, complete with film and audio from the 2014 Rugby World Cup, Rocky focussed on the value of resilience and how it is important to keep trying and striving for success no matter what setbacks or obstacles may come your way.

District Rounders Many congratulations to the U13A Rounders Team for winning the District Rounders Final! It was an excellent performance from the whole squad, as the team beat Wycombe High School in the Final.

Bucks School Games Triathlon Well done to the Year 10 Team from Pipers (Grace B, Clara H, Sofia M, Alicia O, Rowen S and Antonia T) who won their age category at this event to become Bucks School Games County Champions – a great achievement!

WHO’S WHO

Name: Col G W Pearce Position: Bursar Brief description of your role within Pipers Corner I am the Bursar here at Pipers. The Bursar’s role is often called the Business Manager or indeed a Jack of all trades. The role encompasses the whole range of support services, from maintenance, grounds, catering, cleaning and, of course, finance. It has been described as “if it is not teaching, then it’s yours!”

What did you do before you joined the School?

I joined the Army at 16 as an apprentice chef and left, some 37 years later as a Colonel. I commanded a Supply Squadron and later a Transport Regiment in the Iraq war in 2003. I left the Army to join the NHS on an Executive Fast Track Programme, spending 3 and a half years working in a large hospital.

I am also currently doing a Masters’ Degree in Corporate Governance to help with my role here in the School, looking at the pressures from the Charity Commission on Governors’ engagement in operational decision making. I am also writing a book about transferrable leadership skills, learned over my time in the Army and applicable, I believe, to other walks of life.

What excites you about the job you do?

The energy, enthusiasm and thirst for learning that the Pipers girls show every day. When looking for a Bursar role I visited a few schools and the thing that drew me to Pipers was the fact that the children are very much front and centre of every decision made here.

Who would you say has inspired you in life?

A difficult question to answer, Abraham Lincoln comes to mind and indeed some military generals that I have served with during my career. The Army motto is “Be the Best”, but in some ways that suggests that there is an end to learning or achievement and I firmly believe that “continuous improvement” is the key to success, so I would say, Buzz Lightyear as his catchphrase is “To infinity and beyond”!

What activities do you enjoy in your spare time?

I am a keen triathlete and have been competing in triathlon for over 30 years, as an early member of the Army Team and latterly as a GB Age Group competitor. I was European Champion for my age group last year at a race in Düsseldorf in Germany and have won the England Championships for my age group for the last

News from the PPTA We were delighted to welcome a record number of guests to the PTA Glitz and Glamour Ball at the beginning of July. It was a superb evening that was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.

Thanks to the fantastic generosity of those who donated items for the auction and raffle, as well as those who entered or placed auction bids, the event raised a fantastic £6,500 for the PPTA nominated charity, YoungMinds!
