BUSINESS MANAGER’S REPORT Brothers and Sisters, I hope you've had a terrific summer and are in good spirits as we enter this fall season. I’m pleased to report that 2023 continues to be an excellent year for the Local 537 community.

We've had outstanding member engagement at Local 537 events, and a successful work season marked by the completion of job site projects across the state.

We recently held our 29 th Annual Charitable Golf Tournament at Crosswinds Golf Club.

This wonderful event gave our members an opportunity to gather with each other on a beautiful summer day and raised thousands of dollars for local charities. Proceeds from the day will go to the Pipefitters Charitable Fund, which has been a longtime supporter of organizations like the Muscular Dystrophy Association, The Labor Guild, and the Greater Boston Food Bank.

Over the years, we have had a significant impact on efforts by these organizations to bring about positive change in our community. A special thanks to all who helped organize this event, to our sponsors who helped make it a success, and to all those who participated in the tournament.

Local 537 is also taking part in a major clean energy initiative by Governor Maura Healey’s administration to help the state reduce greenhouse gas emissions – with the goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and creating up to 38,000 new jobs. The effort is being funded through $18 million in Clean Energy Workforce Development Grants. This will lead to many more job opportunities for not only our members but also people in the surrounding communities.

During the course of this year, our members have been hard at work on multiple job sites across the region. In this issue, we're pleased to highlight members working on the ongoing 74 Middlesex

Ave. project, where a major development including laboratory, office, and retail space is being built.

Additionally, there are a range of member events and holidays ahead! Soon enough we’ll be entering the holiday season, and there will be several opportunities for members and their families to gather together. The Retiree Association will be meeting at the Union Hall on Wednesday, November 8, and a Christmas party will be held on Saturday, December 2.

Together, we are always improving our profession, our communities, and our commonwealth – and I sincerely appreciate how Local 537 members lead on all of these fronts. As always, I encourage you to reach out to the union office with any questions that you may have.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT: 74 MIDDLESEX AVE If you haven’t noticed, the Somerville skyline is getting a major facelift. Our skilled pipefitters and HVAC technicians are hard at work at 74 Middlesex Ave., a major construction project that is adding significant lab, office, lifestyle amenities, and life sciences infrastructure to the Greater Boston area.

74 Middlesex Ave. is a 465K square-foot project with a life science hub. The industrial site is being transformed into a world-class science and innovation campus. 18 Local 537 members are installing equipment and parts at the job site.

74 Middlesex's innovation campus includes direct access to I-93, MBTA Orange Line, and dedicated bike routes.

Parts of the project will be ready for occupancy by the end of 2024.

Our union is proud to be doing our part to make our state a leader in the growing life science industry.

HEALEY-DRISCOLL ADMINISTRATION INVESTS $18 MILLION IN EQUITABLE CLEAN ENERGY AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT Pipefitters Local 537 is proud to be playing a major role in the Healey administration's efforts to make Massachusetts a leader in the transition to clean energy and to create up to 38,000 new jobs.

More than $18 million in Clean Energy Workforce Development grants were announced at an event hosted at the union in August. The grants will fund efforts to lower barriers for young people, people of color, and women to enter the clean energy workforce. Funds will also support expanded outreach to minority and women-owned businesses to increase their participation in the clean energy sector.

"The clean energy industry will bring valuable jobs to residents across Massachusetts. We can deliver the benefits of clean energy to our communities and our own neighbors can be the ones to do it," said Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll. "I was glad to be with the Pipefitters today to make this important announcement.

These investments mean more people will be able to access good-paying, union jobs created by the clean energy transition."

The initiative is part of the state's effort to slash greenhouse gas emissions down to net zero by the year 2050.

"These awards empower our communities and residents to actively join this clean energy transition by creating pathways that offer accessible entry points into valuable careers, ultimately creating a diverse, inclusive, and robust workforce," Governor Healey said of the grants.

'Massachusetts' commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions is essential to create a sustainable future for everyone.

But we can't reach this goal through policy and technology alone — it will require highly-trained pipefitters, HVAC technicians, and welders,' said Daniel O’Brien, Business Manager, Pipefitters Local 537. 'And we're ready to do our part to recruit and train the workforce of the future.'"

Kimball Farms, located in Westford, will be the host for the Saturday, June 1, 2024 event, which will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This special event will give members and our families the opportunity to relax, unwind, and create lasting memories.

Kimball Farms family fun day will offer an adventure-packed day with a variety of activities, including mini golf courses, the Bumper Boat Pond, the Spin Zone Bumper Cars, and more.

RETIREE ASSOCIATION FUTURE MEETINGS Pipefitters Local 537 Retiree Association’s fall meetings will be held the first Wednesday after the first Thursday of each month. They can also be found on your Local 537 calendar. This year’s remaining meeting will be held: • Wednesday, November 8 at 11:30 a.m.
