IN MEMORIAM

BUSINESS MANAGER’S REPORT Dear Brothers and Sisters, I hope you and yours enjoyed very happy holidays, and I wish you all an even better 2022. Although it is true that we are still in the thick of an ongoing pandemic and we must remain vigilant, we accomplished so much together over the past year, and I am filled with hope looking forward to what we can do together in the year ahead. On a local level, we are thrilled to congratulate the new and returning elected officials selected to serve our community in the most recent election cycle. We wish the best to Boston's new Mayor, Michelle Wu, who is the first woman and the first person of color to be elected to the role. We know she will serve our city with passion, vision, and commitment. We also congratulate our Boston City Councilors — we look forward to collaborating in creating opportunities for local families in each neighborhood. Best wishes to: Michael Flaherty, City Councilor, At-Large

Frank Baker, District 3

Julia Mejia, City Councilor, At-Large

Ricardo Arroyo, District 5

Ruthzee Louijeune, City Councilor, At-Large Erin Murphy, City Councilor, At-Large Ed Flynn, District 2

Brian Worrell, District 4 Kendra Hicks, District 6 Tania Fernandes Anderson, District 7 Kenzie Bok, District 8 Liz Breadon, District 9

And we extend our congratulations to Lydia Edwards on her landslide victory in a special election and look forward to her serving in this new role as State Senator of Boston, Cambridge, Revere, and Winthrop. We know Lydia will continue to be a champion for working people on Beacon Hill.

More good things to look forward to in 2022 include new and evolving legislative policies at both the state and federal levels. Just this November, Congress passed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act into law which marks the largest infrastructure investment in modern history and a critical step towards protecting quality union jobs. Americans can expect millions of hours of work from this bill alone, all covered with union standards of wages and benefits. At the state level, Pipefitters Local 537 and our fellow building trades unions will continue lobbying our legislature to pass necessary steps toward protecting working families and expanding the middle class. House Bill 2046 and Senate Bill 1189 will enforce prevailing wage laws in off-site prefabrication sites. This legislation will close the loophole that allows bad players to exploit off-site workers and have an unfair advantage over responsible contractors. House Bill 313 and Senate Bill 173 to increase HVAC/R Safety will ensure that all workers are guaranteed proper training and licensing in order to perform dangerous refrigeration work. With or without a pandemic, we here at Pipefitters Local 537 have a lot to look forward to, and a lot to be thankful for. That's our focus going into 2022, and we hope you enter the new year with the same energy and optimism. Together, there's nothing we can't overcome or accomplish. In Solidarity,

Thomas P. Kerr, Jr.

Business Manager/Financial Secretary-Treasurer Pipefitters Local 537

POLITICAL

N E W S

LABOR WINS IN POLITICS At Home – Local Elections This election season, we had the opportunity to stand behind pro-union candidates who fight for working families and support the creation of quality union jobs. We rallied to show our support and turned out in volumes at the polls to cast our votes. Together, we successfully elected long-time union member and staunch union advocate, Erin Murphy, to the Boston City Council, among many other strong, pro-worker candidates throughout our region. Pipefitters Local 537 congratulates Boston’s new mayor, Michelle Wu, and the entire Boston City Council, as well as our allies across municipalities who have been elected to serve our communities. We thank our new officials for their hard work and commitment, and we look forward to collaborating with them toward a better future for all.

Nationwide – Infrastructure & Jobs Investment In November, President Biden and the U.S. Congress passed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act into law, the largest infrastructure investment in modern history. In addition to creating an average of 1.5 million jobs per year for the next decade, the act will invest: • $129 billion to modernize our public transit systems • $110 billion to repair and rebuild our roads and bridges • $65 billion in clean energy efforts • $65 billion to ensure that every American has access to reliable, high-speed internet • $55 billion to expand access to clean drinking water This long-overdue investment will be key for rebuilding our country’s crumbling infrastructure, as well as for supporting an economic recovery through the creation of good, family-sustaining jobs. Thank you to everyone who reached out to their representatives and urged them to pass this bill, ushering in a historic win for working families.

Boston City Councilor, At-Large Erin Murphy

INDUSTRY NEWS

LOCAL 537 LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES Leveling the Playing Field for MA Working Families Currently, there is a loophole in Massachusetts' prevailing wage laws that has allowed companies to shortchange workers, hurt local contractors, and cheat working families. Prevailing wage laws are intended to protect workers from discrimination, ensure that they earn a fair wage, and level the playing field for contractors to bid on public projects. However, workers are being unfairly excluded from the existing prevailing wage laws simply because they are performing off-site work or work that is not at the primary job site. House Bill 2046/Senate Bill 1189 will close the prevailing wage loophole, stop wage theft, and level the playing field for workers here in Massachusetts.

Tell legislators to close the prevailing wage loophole and protect workers by signing the petition!

Ensuring Safety for Refrigeration Technicians Pipefitters Local 537 is proud to provide industry-leading training to all our members. Unfortunately, there are many companies in our industry installing and servicing heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC/R) systems without proper standards or worker training. Where refrigeration technicians work with systems that carry harmful toxins, the consequences of inadequate regulation and oversight are too significant to ignore. Proper training is critical for upholding safety and protecting lives. House Bill 313/Senate Bill 173 will raise standards of quality and safety in the HVAC/R sector by guaranteeing that everyone performing this work will receive proper safety training and licensing. We are calling on Speaker Mariano and Senate President Spilka to ensure the passage of this legislation, to protect the health and safety of our community’s workers and building occupants.

Help protect the health and safety of HVAC/R workers by signing the petition!

RECRUITMENT CAMPAIGN At Local 537, we are proud to represent highlyskilled pipefitters, welders, and HVAC-R technicians who work hard every day to serve Massachusetts. We are also proud to continue generating work opportunities for members, and to extend life-changing union wages and benefits to as many workers as possible, by expanding our unionized workforce. Over the course of three months, we launched a multimedia campaign to recruit licensed, experienced workers to our union. We utilized digital advertising and direct mail, as well as radio and video ads, to showcase the

industry-leading wages and healthcare and retirement benefits that we offer to our members. We are excited to be getting the word out there about the opportunities in our union, and look forward to welcoming our new brothers and sisters!

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT JOHN TAKIS Brother John Takis retired in 2021 after 45 years with Local 537. Over the years, Takis has raised over $50,000 through athletic events in support of various charities, including, but not limited to, the American Heart and Lung associations, the ALS Foundation, the Dana-Farber Institute, and the Sacred Heart Food Pantry in Haverhill.

"

I am very proud and honored to be a part of Local 537 and its brotherhood," wrote Takis. "Our union has always encouraged us to participate in community and charitable events. It is this aspect of unionism I most cherish, to give back to those in need." Takis feels that while it may be challenging to train for various athletic events, including Triathlon events and 62-100 mile bike rides, it pales in comparison to a battle with cancer, neurological diseases, mental health issues, and homelessness – just some of the causes he helps fundraise for. Takis attributes his ability to achieve his fundraising goals to the support and kindness of Local 537 and its members.

"I am deeply appreciative of my life as a pipefitter in Local 537 and all it has provided to myself and my family. I will be proud to display the 537 logo on my shirt in upcoming events," wrote Takis. Congratulations on your retirement, John! Thank you for all that you have done and we wish you the very best in your next chapter!

10

The enhancements include 120,000 square feet of amenity space and 25,000 square feet of retail and dining along Pearl Street. HELMETS TO HARDHATS Helmets to Hardhats Motorcycle Run

Helmets to Hardhats Veterans Day Fundraising Event

On September 25, the Massachusetts Building Trades Unions held the annual Helmets to Hardhats Charity Motorcycle Ride to raise money in support of the Helmets to Hardhats (H2H) organization! H2H is a groundbreaking nonprofit that connects National Guard, Reserve, and transitioning active-duty members with long-term, family-sustaining careers in the union building trades, and supports them every step of the way. Since 2003, the non-profit has helped over 39,000 military service members find quality careers and training in the construction industry. Pipefitters Local 537 is proud to partner with Helmets to Hardhats, and proud to have helped raise around $15,000 through this charity motorcycle ride. Thank you to all who attended and donated!

Ahead of Veterans Day, Massachusetts Building Trades Unions and union contractors honored the vast contributions of our local veterans through our annual fundraising ceremony, raising nearly $40,000 for the life-changing career pathways program, Helmets to Hardhats. Local 537's Michael Howard spoke at the event and shared how H2H has personally changed his life after he left the Navy to support his family when his mother became ill. "They helped me find a career when I was just a young man, lost after coming back from war," said Howard. "I could never really put into words the gratitude I feel for this program. It was the avenue I needed at a time when I didn’t know what direction to go." Pipefitters Local 537 hosted the November 9 event, and is proud to partner with H2H and help raise money to support this important cause.

MASSBTC RECOVERY COUNCIL In September, Secretary of Labor Walsh helped launch the Massachusetts Building Trades Recovery Council, the latest in ongoing efforts by Massachusetts building trades unions to support workers struggling with substance abuse and addiction.

"

As a former construction worker and someone in long-term recovery, I am grateful to my partners and friends at the Massachusetts Building Trades Council for taking their support for recovery to the next level. These new initiatives will help countless workers get access to recovery services, reduce the stigma that prevents people from getting help, and advance our fight to end the epidemic of addiction that impacts every part of our country,” stated Walsh.

The Recovery Council will bring together a number of initiatives led by various Massachusetts building trades unions in an effort to: 1. Reduce the stigma surrounding addiction. 2. Promote recovery by connecting workers with counseling, treatment, and peer support, all free of charge. This statewide public education campaign will promote a wide range of resources, including peer-to-peer support meetings, counseling, detox, and treatment. For more information, and to seek help, please visit MassBuildingTrades.org/Recovery. Pipefitters Local 537 is here to support our members on the road to recovery each step of the way.
