This spring, our Pre-K Montessori students embarked on an

exciting scientific adventure as they explored the fascinating

world of life cycles, with a special focus on the transformation of butterflies. To bring this unit to life, we welcomed 10 live caterpillars into our classroom. Each day, our “Youngest

Pioneers” eagerly gathered around to observe the caterpillars, noticing how they ate, moved, and grew larger. As the

caterpillars continued to grow, students witnessed one of

nature’s most remarkable processes: metamorphosis. The

anticipation grew each day as students checked the habitat, hoping to be the first to spot a butterfly. The learning did not stop there. Students took on the important responsibility of

caring for the butterflies by providing sugar water and fresh

strawberries. The highlight of the unit was the butterfly release.

After several days of observation and care, students gathered together outside in the school yard to set the butterflies free.

As the butterflies spread their wings and fluttered into the sky, students watched with smiles, excitement, and a sense of accomplishment.

n June 5th, Pioneer Academy welcomed families to campus to celebrate

our youngest learners at the Pre-K

Montessori year-end gathering. The

morning was dedicated to looking back

on a year filled with new friendships, creative discovery,

and the everyday milestones that shape early childhood.

The program began with reflections from the classroom

teachers, followed by a slideshow capturing the students’ journey through the school year. Seeing the children’s

baby pictures displayed alongside photos of their recent classroom activities brought plenty of smiles and a few

happy tears to the audience, highlighting just how much they have grown since September.

To mark their progress, each student received a certificate recognizing their personal growth, curiosity, and kindness throughout the year. Afterward, families and teachers

gathered for a communal breakfast, while the children

enjoyed taking playful photos together at the photo booth.

It was a warm, joyful conclusion to the year, and we are incredibly proud of everything our Pre-K students have accomplished.

Planting Seeds for the Future

L

ower School students have been enjoying planting fruits and

vegetables in the new planter boxes outside our school! Created to

celebrate Earth Day and teach students about gardening and plant

life cycles, the colorful planter boxes have quickly become a favorite

part of campus.

Our talented art teachers helped bring the project to life by beautifully

decorating and painting the boxes before students eagerly began planting.

The young gardeners sowed a wide variety of crops, including watermelon, cucumbers, carrots, and many other fruits and vegetables.

Since planting their seeds, students

have excitedly watched as tiny sprouts emerged and began to grow. Through this hands-on experience, they

have learned about the importance of caring for plants, the stages of

a plant’s life cycle, and the many ways we can help protect and appreciate our environment.

The Lower School planter boxes have not only brightened our outdoor space but have

also inspired curiosity, responsibility, and a love of nature in our students. We look forward to watching the garden continue to flourish throughout the season!

Pioneer Excellence in the Arts

e are proud to highlight the remarkable achievements of our student artists, whose creativity and dedication

have earned them recognition through exhibitions hosted by the Art Educators of New Jersey (AENJ) at two of New Jersey’s most respected cultural venues, this event occurred on 4/10/26.

Tahzeeba’s (8th Grade) artwork, transports viewers into a mystical landscape inspired by the Argentinian folktale La Luz Mala, often referred to as “the evil light.”

Alana’s (5th Grade) piece reflects the influence of Frida Kahlo, while also showcasing her own artistic

voice. Using colored pencils, she created a vibrant still life of fruit that emphasizes careful observation, bold color choices, and personal expression.

Anna’s (8th Grade) work acrylic painting presents

a beautifully composed still life, demonstrating strong technical skill and attention to detail.

student-athletes receive every day— from attending games to managing

innovative ideas to industry judges at the DECA High School

Career Development Conference, held at Harrah’s Atlantic City between March 3–5.

Accompanied by their advisor, Mr. James Hohnau, these dedicated

students joined over 5,500 peers from across the state for the intensive three-day event centered on business, marketing, finance, and

management. The competition was rigorous, featuring written exams,

professional role-plays, and complex business presentations designed to test real-world application of classroom knowledge.

While none of our competitors advanced to the national level this

year, the experience proved to be an incredibly valuable milestone for the club. Students from all grade levels had the unique opportunity to present their innovative ideas directly to industry judges, collaborate

with ambitious peers, and gain firsthand exposure to the professional landscape

n the midst of a busy academic year, do students ever truly get a “green light” to seek support? This February, the Upper School dedicated an entire week to answering that question with a

resounding yes, fostering a culture of well-being through mindful

activities, small wins, and dedicated support.

The week began with Mindful Monday, where students gathered in

the cafeteria during lunch to create their own stress balls. This simple, hands-on activity gave students a practical tool for managing stress

while also offering a moment to slow down during a busy school day.

On Small Wins Tuesday, the focus shifted to celebrating personal achievements. Students were invited to write down a “Small Win”

on a sticky note—anything from asking for help to simply showing up on time—and exchange it for a treat. The activity reinforced

the idea that progress comes in many forms and that even small accomplishments deserve recognition.

Midweek, Wellness Wednesday transformed the cafeteria into a calming “Wellness Corner.” Students enjoyed live music during lunch and participated in relaxing activities such as henna art.

The atmosphere encouraged students to unwind and recharge, highlighting the importance of balance in daily life.

One of the most anticipated events came on Therapy Dog Thursday, when students had the chance to spend time with Lulu, a therapy

dog who visited during lunch. The opportunity to interact with Lulu

provided comfort and joy, giving students a chance to relax and reset.

The week concluded with Wear Green Friday, a school-wide show

ave you ever traveled the globe without ever leaving your school campus? This past April 13-17, our community did just that, transforming the turf field into a vibrant hub of discovery during the Pioneer Academy’s Multicultural Week.

Under the theme “Sustainable Societies,” students in grades 9-11 dove deep into the

traditions, crafts, and flavors of nine different nations: Singapore, New Zealand, Japan, Ghana, Seychelles, Costa Rica, Mauritius, the Czech Republic, and Sweden. The week

also featured an energizing kickoff on April 10 and a panel discussion titled “Maximizing Harmony through Digital Minimalism” During this event, Social Studies teacher and

author Mr. Richard Arrighi, moderated by junior Laura, led a discussion on how we can navigate our increasingly digital world with greater purpose and balance.

The highlight of the week arrived on Friday, as the turf field became the setting

for a bustling global tour filled with tourism centers, each representing a different

country. Each student group presented a unique window into their assigned country, showcasing costumes, cultural artifacts, and demonstrations. The day was further

enlivened by musical performances from our talented staff and student musicians.

While every team brought incredible effort and insight to their presentations, the competition was fierce. Congratulations to this year’s top three winning teams: First Place: Czech Republic (Grade 11) Second Place: Seychelles (Grade 10) Third Place: Japan (Grade 9)

It was a wonderful chance for us to unite as a senior community and create lasting memories before we headed toward graduation.

We proudly hosted our first-ever schoolwide Spring Music and Art Festival on May 19th, 2026, bringing together

students, teachers, families, and staff for an unforgettable celebration of creativity, talent, and hard work across all grade levels at the Wayne Community Center.

The festival began with heartwarming performances by our Pre-K through 4th grade students. The lower school

side-by-side, juniors and their mothers selected blossoms, balanced colors, and applied design

techniques to assemble elaborate, custom floral pieces to take home.

Academy’s new interactive photo booth. The station quickly became the center of entertainment for the morning, allowing mothers and students to pose

for a variety of candid, lighthearted photographs.

The customized prints provided families with an immediate, tangible keepsake from the day.

SIXTH GRADERS CONDUCT GENETIC ENGINEERING

n March 13, Pioneer Academy’s sixth graders

stepped away from their standard classroom routines and into the shoes of professional

geneticists during an immersive field trip to the DNA Learning Center (DNALC) right here in Wayne.

The DNALC is an exceptional educational facility operated by

the world-renowned Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory—a global powerhouse in genetic research and home to eight Nobel

Prize-winning scientists. For our students, this wasn’t just a day out of school; it was an exclusive pass to experience high-level, authentic biotechnology firsthand.

The day was anchored by two sophisticated, hands-on

laboratory sessions that challenged our sixth graders to apply and expand their knowledge of microbiology.

Lab 1 - Live Cell Analysis: In their first session, students took

on the delicate task of preparing their own biological slides.

Using professional compound microscopes, they observed live cells in real-time, focusing on cellular structures and mastering the fine adjustments required to view the

microscopic world clearly.

Lab 2 - Genetic

Engineering: The

second lab brought

textbook concepts of DNA to life. Students utilized specialized

plasmids (circular DNA molecules) to actively modify the

genetic code of research-grade bacteria (E. coli). The goal of the experiment was twofold: to successfully introduce antibiotic resistance and to induce bioluminescence.

This activity completely bridges the gap between abstract science concepts and reality. By giving our sixth graders early exposure to cutting-edge science, trips like these

cultivate the curiosity and critical thinking skills needed for the next generation of innovators. Congratulations to our

sixth graders on a highly successful, scientifically proven day of discovery!
