Welcome to the 17th edition of Pinta Miami

By Diego Costa Peuser DIRECTOR

6 • PINTA MIAMI 2023

Welcome to the 17th edition of Pinta Miami, the only fair specializing in Latin American Art. After last year’s great success, we return with big enthusiasm to the Hangar in Coconut Grove with a renewed proposal and a commitment to continue to make visible and enhance the diversity of modern and contemporary art in the region. This year’s curatorial team is composed of Irene Gelfman, Pinta’s global curator, who also developed the RADAR proposal; Giuliana Vidarte, curator of NEXT; Felix Suazo, curator of the special projects section and the conversation series; and architect Daniel Fischer, who designed the fair’s layout. Celebrating this wonderful encounter in Miami, Pinta continues with its Awards and Acquisitions program, whose mission is to strengthen the market and the international presence of Latin American productions in collections of great relevance. A special thanks to EFG Wealth Management, our main sponsor, for their extensive commitment to the Pinta universe. I would also like to thank JW Marriot, RCLaw, pvg, Pommery, Americas Growers Imports, Compagni dei Caraibi, Centinela; and all the art institutions that collaborated by opening their doors to us. Finally, many thanks to the artists, gallery owners, collectors, curators and general public for joining us again.

Now in its 13th year, the aim of the initiative is to promote the work of Latin American artists and every year, we are delighted to present the award at Pinta Miami. The winning artwork is added to the growing EFG Latin America Art Award collection on permanent display in our Miami office. We share Pinta Miami’s passion for contemporary art and through our portfolio of cross-cultural partnerships and our own thriving collection, we are pleased to play a small part in preserving and investing in the future of art in the community. We hope you enjoy all Pinta Miami 2023 has to offer.

NEXT CURATOR: GIULIANA VIDARTE Under the curatorship of Giuliana Vidarte, the NEXT section proposes the visualization of emerging galleries with relevance within the contemporary scene of their regions. Again this year, the NEXT award will be given to the best exhibition proposal of the section with a prize of USD 2500 to be selected by a prestigious jury. In the 2023 edition of PINTA Miami, NEXT brings together a selection of ten South American galleries organized in exchange and collaboration pairs. Within the five stands, which are part of the section, the proposals of eighteen creators from Latin America are presented. In this edition, the galleries from Lima, Buenos Aires, Guayaquil, Cordoba, Rosario, Valparaiso and Bogota promote projects that are developed as places of encounter, experimentation and training, and that seek to contribute to the decentralization of artistic practices in their contexts, by hosting proposals that unfold from the diversity of ecosystems that are part of the shared territories in Latin America. The desert and coastal strips, the Amazon forest, the Andes and urban environments are spaces from where artists recognize communities and shared problems to establish reflections on the conditions of the present and the possible new configurations of future scenarios. Personal histories and collective memories converge

in common means of creation, expression and expansion that confront historical times and propose fluid identities. The landscapes of virtuality, the imaginaries of mythology and ancestral visuality, the particularities of the bodies and beings that coexist in these ecosystems are reviewed according to the interrelationships between different vital environments and the contradictions and conflicts of contemporary societies. Installations CURATOR: FELIX SUAZO

The Special Projects of Pinta Miami 2023 keep the focus on the relationship between art and its environment —whether intellectual, social, or natural— through a selection of site-specific installations by Anna Biondo, Carola Bravo, and Alberto Cavalieri. The works have been conceived for the outdoor areas of The Hangar, Pan American’s former base in Coconut Grove. Anna Biondo claims the necessary symbiosis of the natural and the human, using materials, shapes, and colors that evoke flight and healing. Support by The55project Carola Bravo addresses the issue of immigration —one of the most controversial

.issues of contemporaneity— seeking an empathetic and reflexive reception. Support by Churromania Alberto Cavalieri focuses his work on the friction between desires and needs in the process of cultural valuation and legitimization, combining the material, the textual, and the intangible. Support by Art Nouveau Gallery, Miami. From this platform, Pinta Miami 2023 extends its support for the public dissemination of contemporary art, in the face of a world full of challenges, which demands a strong commitment to creation, coexistence, and mutual respect.
