PINTA CONCEPT

Pinta unifies its fairs and expands Latin American art

With an experience of more than fifteen years bringing Latin American art to the world, we unify our art and pho tography fairs, and our cooperation and integration pro grams, under the Pinta brand; renewing our purpose of highlighting and enhancing the talent of emerging and established artists linked to the region.

Pinta fuses a shared vision and reaffirms its passion and dedication for the art of Latin America with a more integral dimension of identity. Since creating BAphoto in 2005, Pinta in 2007, and PArC in 2013, the American paradigms have shifted and with it, the fairs grew in trajectory.

Pinta Miami, Pinta PArC, Pinta Basel, Pinta BAphoto and Pinta Sud come together now in a same universe that connects, summons and attracts artists, curators, collec tors, gallery owners, public / private institutions and art lovers in general in an ecosystem that promotes talent and management.

With the support and strategic perspective of Future Brand, a global brand transformation company, the Pinta

to the world

Group brands are arranged in a portfolio aimed at gene rating value in general and particular terms. Pinta Miami’s renewed identity reflects the spirit of a Group in constant growth that sets and consolidates trends.

With a professional team led by Diego Costa Peuser and transversal to different business units, Pinta Group moves forward with an innovative spirit and an authentic commit ment to promote and give visibility to the work and pers pective of artists as they conceive the Latin American artistic identity. Pinta thus brings together the art of Latin America in all its expressions and conquers new markets through fairs and programs that are diversified into innova tive proposals, such as Pinta Basel and Pinta Sud.

That said, Pinta announces the exploration of new fron tiers, the revitalization of its ecosystem and the implemen tation of avant-garde dynamics to highlight the value of the collective.

SPECIAL PROJECTS PINTA MIAMI 2022

The Special Projects section of Pinta Miami 2022, curated by Félix Suazo, presents the work of Carlos Medina, Richard Garet, Muu Blanco and Julia Zurilla, who focus on different aspects of the contemporary art scene, using media such as installation and video. The proposals question issues of high significance in today’s society; among them, the impact of the Covid-19 pan demic, the challenges of climate change and the inci dence of science and technology in artistic processes.

Carlos Medina takes neutrinos as his starting point, subatomic elementary particles with a neutral charge and very low mass that move at very high speeds through the universe, in the work Neutrino Spheres 3 & 4 (2022). The proposal, specially conceived for the outdoor area of The Hangar in Coconut Grove, focuses on the notions of immateriality, emptiness, lightness and light, as well as suggesting a metaphorical leap between extreme powers; from the microscopic to the macrocosmic, from the corporeal to the elusive, from the visible to the invisible. According to the artist, his work proposes a journey “towards the imperceptible, the light, the transparent...”

For their part, Richard Garet, Muu Blanco and Julia Zurilla make up a videographic triad that dialogues from different levels: perceptive, social and ecological. Garet shows a work from the Perceptual series, which proposes a counterpoint between the pictorial and the electronic from the conversion of sound into image. Blanco presents the video Delivery Aesthetic, a record of his personal and professional experience during the Covic-19 pandemic. Zurilla exhibits one of her au diovisual diptychs from the Vertical Horizon series, an investigation based on the double articulation of family archive images and documentary images of extraordi nary events and natural phenomena.

Carlos Medina (Barquisimeto, Venezuela, 1953) lives and works in Paris. He studied at the Escuela de Artes Visuales in Caracas, graduating in 1975. In 1977 he settled in Carrara, Italy, where he took courses in stone and bronze sculpture. Attentive to the uses, pos sibilities and meanings of materials, Medina focuses his language on geometry, oscillating between volumet ric concerns and the investigation of space. His work explores the essential principles of the universe and

134 • PINTA MIAMI 2022

its phenomena through spatial interventions and the superposition of real, virtual and reflective geometric planes. His work is represented in numerous public and institutional collections and several of his works are in stalled in architectural spaces and urban sites.

Richard Garet (US/UY) is a contemporary multime dia artist born in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1972. Garet holds a B.A. of Fine Arts from Empire State College, New York, United States, and an MFA from Bard Col lege, New York, United States. He has lived and worked in the United States since 1996. Garet explores the ontological relationship between the materials he uses, background noise activations, image and sound generative processes, and experiments applied to ob solete and current technological media that emulate everyday situations that translate into abstractions.

For Garet these creations, both conceptual and ex perimental, embody the perception of contemporary life as a filtered, sensory experience.

Muu Blanco (Caracas, 1966) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Miami. In his work he combines differ ent media, including painting, performance, drawing,

photography, electronic music and conceptual video. His work poses a critique of power, wealth, and narcis sism, as well as a commentary on the urban landscape, the consumer industry, social media, and art history.

Julia Zurilla (Caracas, 1967) is a Miami-based mixed media artist recognized for her experience with video and technological media, transforming written narratives into visual images. Since 2017 she lives and works in Miami. Julia is currently a member of the Laundromat Art Space Residency Program based in Miami. BFA and MFA / Armando Reverón University Institute of Higher Studies in Plastic Arts and Fashion Design / Las Mercedes University Institute of Design, Caracas, Venezuela. The written word, photographic imagery, contextual art, and interdisciplinary investi gation of art methods are central pillars of her work and her intellectual development.

Statement of works

Richard Garet

“In the Perceptual series, which consists of a total of 31 moving image works, Garet uses sounds differ ently for each piece. The sound itself is material-tool and instrument to generate each moving image work that ultimately turns out to be a visualization from a sound composition and arrangement. To conclude each work, Garet eliminates the audio, leaving only the signal of the moving image, and successively creat ing the experience of perceiving sound through vision, which changes and pulsates according to the proper ties of the sound itself. The viewer then experiences a continuous flow of colors and changing moods.”

Muu Blanco

“The pandemic came along and destroyed my econ omy; it was not very stable but I was surviving with out complaints. Now I had to reinvent myself by ap plying unsuccessfully to more than a dozen artist assistance programs in the USA; then I rented a car and started working as a food delivery person since February 2020. With this new way of life and my head in the conceptual reflection of what I live, I developed an investigation on several levels -social, conceptual and aesthetic-, giving coherence to the continuity and reality of multidimensional thinking”.

Julia Zurilla

“The Vertical Horizon series is developed as a double articulation: family archive footage in 8mm is related to documentary images of extraordinary events and natural phenomena. These testimonial and unconnect ed images are coupled becoming one in the “horizon” of the other. These videos are traces of other looks, other framing and other times. In this sense, they work as a revelation of a cultural paradox. A paradox of an era in which the document has turned the past into an image always observable and consumable. Therefore, disconnected from any context and for this same rea son, destined to an eternity without a place, without a future.” (Julia Zurilla. Artist Statement)

(Julia Zurilla. Artist Statement).

TROPICALIZANDO

Tropicalizar is a neologism used by advertising agen cies when adapting a North American product or cam paign to Latin American countries.

It is also used in architecture to describe the process of translating an international starchitects project to lo cal authorities, not only for licensing purposes, but also to adapt it to the local craftsmanship limitations and ma terial availability, trying in the process to reduce costs.

In most cases this mutation takes away all the qual ities of the architect original intentions and leaves the projects lacking innovation, precision, and their original character. In the case of Tropicalizando, the purpose is to achieve the opposite. The artefacts showcase lo cal traditions, materials, craftsmanship and culture of modern day and age.

The 2022 edition of Pinta Miami will feature, for the first time, a collector design space. Curated by Pas cal Tarabay, artist and designer, the show will focus on the Latin American contemporary design scene.

Under the theme Tropicalizando, the selection of furniture, objects, lighting and rugs is a testimony of today’s dynamic interaction between traditional and contemporary design processes and materials, inter national design culture and local customs, which have

created a variety of new hybrid languages and identi ties in the Americas.

An important part of the show will be the new Lima Modern Gallery edition of art rugs and tapestries weaved in traditional Andean processes by Peruvian master artisans. Both designers and artisans were challenged to create innovative pieces with one of the most ancestral techniques and materials, some of which haven’t changed for thousands of years.

The theme was chosen to challenge a diffused practice of adapting imported concepts, by seeking an opposite attitude from designers interested in cre ating a contemporary vision with local cultures and means. From negative and pejorative, the concept of Tropicalizar thus transforms into a superlative, a syn onym of enrichment of the design project.

The show will include design pieces by Franscisco Gomez Paz (Argentina), Atelier Caracas (Venezuela), Giovanni Lauda (Italy), Paula Juchem (Brazil), Valenti na Maggiolo (Perù), Domingos Tótora (Brazil), Marina Garcia Burgos (Perù), Leo Capote (Brazil), Javier Rubio (Perù), Spockdesign (Lebanon), Javier Robles (Perù), Ale Jordao (Brazil), Mariagroup (Lebanon), Christie Arias + Sergio Guzman (Perù), Jaime Ortiz de Zevallos (Perù), Lorenzo Bustillos (Venezuela), Octavo (Perú).

TRIBUTE TO IDES KIHLEN

Ides Kihlen paints. She paints every day, from early hours. And just as she paints, she lives. Fun and free. Until a few years ago, her work was one of the best kept secrets in the Argentine visual arts scene. It was only at the beginning of the 21st century that her paint ings left her workshop and came to light.

Since then, her production began to circulate and arouse great interest from collectors, galleries and institutions; She participated in art fairs around the world and the most important museums in Argentina dedicated important exhibitions to her. In 2022, Ides turned 105 years old and the Museo Nacional de Bel las Artes in Buenos Aires celebrated it with the ex hibition Homenaje a Ides Kihlen. She also received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes.

Pinta Miami joins this celebration with a new trib ute. In collaboration with the AINA NOWACK / ACC GALERÍA , we invite our international visitors to enjoy this great symphony inhabited by the lyrical and playful compositions of Ides: her white, black and red series. Marcela Costa Peuser

STATEMENT

In 2006, AINA NOWACK / ACC GALERÍA , inaugurated her first exhibition in Madrid, with the idea of introducing contemporary Argentinian art in Europe. After studying art in Madrid and London, Aina Nowack began her career working at Sotheby’s Buenos Aires during the 90s.
