COVENANT Caring for our Congregation, our Community, and Each Other

Pinnacle Presbyterian Church is a caring community of believers who honor God by welcoming, showing love, encouraging and serving others. We are made up of people from various religious and economic backgrounds, ethnicities, experiences, thoughts, and beliefs. Yet we strive to be united through God’s reconciling love in Jesus Christ — a love we experience ourselves and show the world.1 Therefore, as a congregation we commit ourselves:

• To welcome all to the joyous wonders of Christ. Members and friends alike help us continue to grow in being a community of reverence, education, hospitality, and resource.3 • To welcome all people, guided by the love of Jesus, and inspiring all to live as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ, rejoicing in all he is doing in our life and ministry.4 • To create an atmosphere where all can feel safe to explore the love of Christ.5 • To actively participate in the life of the congregation through worship, learning, mission, and community.6

• To express gratitude to God and to each other whenever we can.8 • To practice forgiveness by treating one another and ourselves with respect and dignity, articulating personal boundaries when needed and being mindful of the imperfections and fragilities we all share. This includes appropriate discretion in communication, avoiding gossip or unhelpful curiosity, and practicing both accountability and trust.9 • To speak directly to each other with loving kindness when disagreement arises, or when we witness what we believe to be damaging behavior, trusting the grace of God.10 • To encourage healthy responses to differences by seeking accuracy in our views of others and resisting unhelpful participation in others’ disagreements.11

• To encourage, build up, and support those around us in their faith journey through words, actions and personal invitation to participate in the life of God’s church here at Pinnacle Presbyterian Church and throughout the world.13 • To encourage the success of all ministries at Pinnacle, including those to which we are individually committed and those in which we do not participate.

• To trust process, accepting and supporting both lay and professional leadership,14 including session’s responsibility for guiding our ministries and setting Godly boundaries.15 • To be mindful of others’ time and commitments, including ministers, staff and volunteers, and to respect roles and responsibilities of professional leadership.

• To remember that building our community invites active engagement.17 • To follow Scripture’s guidance by sharing what God gives us – time, money, skills, and other resources – for the purposes of the church and other work to which God draws us.18 • To share the good news of Jesus Christ with gentleness, compassion, respect, and friendship.19 • To come together as God’s people, reaching out to make a difference in each other’s lives, in our community, and around the world.20

This covenant represents the commitments we make, both as a congregation and a community of God, as we live, worship, grow, and experience God’s joy in our lives together.

NOTES 1.

The Church is the body of Christ. Christ gives to the Church all the gifts necessary to be his body. The Church strives to demonstrate these gifts in its life as a community in the world (1 Cor. 12:27–28): The Church is to be a community of faith, entrusting itself to God alone, even at the risk of losing its life. The Church is to be a community of hope, rejoicing in the sure and certain knowledge that, in Christ, God is making a new creation.

This new creation is a new beginning for human life and for all things. The Church lives in the present on the strength of that promised new creation. The Church is to be a community of love, where sin is forgiven, reconciliation is accomplished, and the dividing walls of hostility are torn down. The Church is to be a community of witness, pointing beyond itself through word and work to the good news of God’s transforming grace in Christ Jesus its Lord. (Book of Order, F-1.0301)

The Church is to be a community of hope, rejoicing in the sure and certain knowledge that, in Christ, God is making a new creation. As God is in our hearts, we should share the joy of His presence with those around us with joy through welcoming and serving.

4. The unity of believers in Christ is reflected in the rich diversity of the Church’s membership. In Christ, by the power of the Spirit, God unites persons through baptism regardless of race, ethnicity, age, sex, disability, geography, or theological conviction. There is therefore no place in the life of the Church for discrimination against any person. The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) shall guarantee full participation and representation in its worship, governance, and emerging life to all persons or groups within its membership. No member shall be denied participation or representation for any reason other than those stated in this Constitution. (Book of Order, F-1.0403) “As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to the promise” (Galatians 3:27-29, NRSV).

Forgiveness allows us to live in the present without hurt or anger, and to seek divine reconciliation where possible, patience where needed, truth telling where important.

In Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all creation, the Church seeks a new openness to God’s mission in the world.

In Christ, the triune God tends the least among us, suffers the curse of human sinfulness, raises up a new humanity, and promises a new future for all creation. In Christ, Church members share with all humanity the realities of creatureliness, sinfulness, brokenness, and suffering, as well as the future toward which God is drawing them. The mission of God pertains not only to the Church but also to people everywhere and to all creation. As it participates in God’s mission, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A) seeks: a new openness to the sovereign activity of God in the Church and in the world, to a more radical obedience to Christ, and to a more joyous celebration in worship and work; a new openness in its own membership, becoming in fact as well as in faith a community of women and men of all ages, races, ethnicities, and worldly conditions, made one in Christ by the power of the Spirit, as a visible sign of the new humanity; a new openness to see both the possibilities and perils of its institutional forms in order to ensure the faithfulness and usefulness of these forms to God’s activity in the world; and a new openness to God’s continuing reformation of the Church ecumenical, that it might be more effective in its mission.
