PINNACLE DESIGN COMPANY

PinnacleDesignCompany(PDC)isalandscapearchitectural

firm that specializes in creating landscapes and water features for golf course communities. Since 1990, we have worked with 45 different golf course architects, and designed over 170 golf course landscapes around the world, 35 of which have been ranked in state, country, or world rankings, including 11outofthetop30inthestateofCalifornia.

Our portfolio spans from the western United States to

Baja Mexico, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Puerto Rico, Dubai, Egypt, and China. We are a foremost expert in designing low water-use landscapes, as most of our projects are based in desert environments or arid climates. We focus on building landscapes that follow nature and blend seamlessly into the surrounding environment, and many of our projects have received environmental stewardship awards. Our ability to fashion a cohesive design that weaves from the golf landscape intotheresortorprivatedevelopmentamenitieshasledtomany ofourprojectsreceivingoutstandingcommunitydesignawards.

The design mantra we follow with every project is that the landscape must be Believable, Elegant, and Sustainable.

Believability if achieved by creating an overall concept that can be felt and seen throughout the site. Local native vegetation and existing topographicalfeaturesaretheinitialinspirationforearlyconceptualideas.

Elegance in a natural setting is achieved by using multiple textures and varying densities to mimic the randomness of nature.

Sustainability is achieved by respecting the natural systems of the environment and allowing those systems to lead your design decisions.

Achieving sustainability must occur at every phase of the design process. In golf course design, usually the clearest path to a great golf course starts with listening to what nature is telling you. In our career, working in golf and working in mostly arid desert environments, we have developed an innate ability to consider the natural systems of the site primarily before anything else. Creative design solutions combined with the respect for

he site that Ladera Golf Club occupies is a 300 acre rectanglar parcel that used to be a working lemon citrus farm on the outskirts of rural Thermal, California. Music mogul Irving Azoff and Apple Executive Eddie Cue bought the property in 2019 and hired Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner to design a family legacy golf course that would be like none other in the desert.

Pinnacle Design was hired to help Gil and his team transform this flat citrus farm into a wide open ‘links style golf course with grasslands, desert plantings, and (because they were there), citrus groves. In the end, the golf course turf area (18 regulation golf holes and a 9 hole short course) occupies about 125 acres. Pinnacle was responsible for designing and field-locating plant material for 65 acres of warm-season and cool-season grasslands, 13 acres of desert scape, and about 45 acres of citrus groves (3500 lemon trees). Most everything about Ladera is different than every other desert golf course. The golf course opened in 2022 and was immediately the ‘talk’ of the industry, achieving Best New Private Golf Course by Golf Digest. A true ‘antithesis’ of a typical desert golf development, Ladera has no cart paths, does not overseed its turf in the winter, and is slated to build only 7 villas and a clubhouse.

ASCOTTSDALE NATIONAL THE OTHER COURSE

Scottsdale, Arizona, USA

t The Other Course (TOC), PDC was hired to work alongside golf architects David Kahn and Tim Jackson to re-vegetate 50+ acres of desert scape for a new 18 hole addition on a major mass graded site. Thousands of native trees, shrubs, cacti, as well as tens of thousands of boulders, were salvaged by the construction team and then field-located by Pinnacle. One of the great byproducts of a major mass grading operation was the generation of tens of thousands of tons of boulders. Pinnacle proposed using a majority of the rock (21,000 tons) to recreate boulder out-croppings throughout the course mimicking the natural hillsides. The goal was to reshape and re-vegetate the land to match the natural topography and flora of the surrounding foothills of Scottsdale. The result was a landscape that appeared to never have been disturbed and a golf course that was routed through a native desert.

TTHE QUARRY

La Quinta, California, USA

he Quarry at La Quinta is an exemplary reclamation golf course development that was transformed from a 70-year old gravel mining property into a U.S. top 100 golf course. The course is broken into 3 zones - The valley floor, a lush oasis of palms and water features, the mid elevations that play across a natural alluvial fan where the landscape palette utilized a mix of ornamental desert & native plants, and the upper third of the course where the property had very minimal disturbance and became more of a pure desert re-vegetation project. The Quarry was one of our earliest examples of how a very drought tolerant landscape (80,000 shrubs over 70 acres, all drip-irrigated) could help save significant amounts of water.

WWHISTLING ROCK COUNTRY CLUB

Chuncheon, South Korea

histling Rock is a 27-hole private club built in the mountains about an hour from Seoul. Pinnacle Design Company was hired for our extensive experience and reputation for recreating natural environments on mass-graded sites. The aggressive grading plan called for about 5.5 million cubic meters of rock and dirt to be moved within a 175 hectare site. We played a key role in master planning the entire property which included 27 holes of golf, clubhouse, entry drive, and villas. We directed the salvaging of all the native plant material that would be re-used in our landscape designs. Our final designs included using 11,000+ native trees and an additional 8,000+ trees and 60,000+ shrubs. The golf course scope included designing more than 6.5 km of streams, 15 lakes, and about 45 hectares of revegetated landscape on the golf course. In addition, PDC also designed landscapes and hardscapes for the clubhouse (including interior gardens), entry, gate house, starter house and tea houses.

ATWIN DOLPHIN

Cabo San Lucas, Baja Sur, Mexico

t Twin Dolphin, Pinnacle Design led the recreation of 62 acres of native coastal vegetation to complement an awardwinning Todd Eckenrode golf course. PDC’s scope included the golf course landscape, entry road, gate houses, halfway houses, and clubhouse landscape.

The Twin Dolphin development team stressed the importance of presenting a most beautiful and stunning golf course possible for their members and guests, and they understood the landscape was a vital part of that presentation. PDC walked each hole with the landscape contractor and physically tagged 20 different species of cacti, shrubs, and trees to be removed and held in a nursery for re-planting after grading. The salvaging process was a 3-step process, moving from the centerline of the hole outward in phases and meeting with the golf architect during the final 2 stages to ensure he achieved what he wanted for his playable space. During the revegation process, Pinnacle focused on following the randomness of the existing vegetation on the site, using only native materials. Each planting area had it’s own micro-environment - different sun angles, wind factors, all affecting minimum and maximum temperatures - so a plant that worked on one golf hole might not have worked on another.

The project was a great example of a true team effort - between contractor, golf architect, and landscape architect - to create and environment for golf where the tuf areas seem to have just dropped right into a pristine native site.

TTHE BRIDGES AT RANCHO SANTA FE

Rancho Santa Fe, California, USA

he Bridges at Rancho Santa Fe is a golf course community in San Diego County that began construction of the golf course in 1998 and continues to develop homes into the 2020’s. Pinnacle Design’s scope of work on this project to date includes full design packages and implementationofdesignsforan18-holegolfcourse,entryandclubhouse, streetscape, swim/fitness center, tennis center, and over 140 custom residences. Onthegolfcourse,werevegetated90acresofenhancednative landscape, and designed a water feature system that included 6 lakes and about 3/4 mile of stream. The Bridges occupies a landscape that brings to mind the Italian hill country of Tuscany with its citrus orchards, olive groves and stands of cypress and eucalyptus trees, but it also blends nicely in with the southern California native hillside landscape because its large expanses of landscape areas used mostly native plantings. The Bridges is a perfect example of Pinnacle’s expertise of blending nonnative ornamental landscaping with native vegetation in a seamless fashion. The Bridges custom home designs received multiple Golden Nugget awards shortly after their opening and the entire development receives golf development accolades year after year.

SSHADY CANYON GOLF CLUB

Irvine, California, USA

hady Canyon Golf Club is an 18-hole private golf course that was built through the canyons and rolling hills at the northern edge of the Laguna Coast Wilderness Park in Irvine. The holes run through big stands of sycamore trees, native coastal sage scrub community, and alongside large rock outcroppings. Pinnacle Design worked with Tom Fazio on the original design to re-vegetate all of the disturbed areas with native plant material. As part of envirnomental approval for the project, we were required to create 45 acres of CSS (coastal sage scrub) community within the golf course property. PDC also designed the water features that had to fit naturally into the site as well as handle required drainage flows.

he Vintage is a presitigous and ultra-private golf community tucked into a natural cove at the base of the Eisenhower mountain in Indian Wells, California. Pinnacle Design has been the Vintage’s exclusive golf course landscape architect since the mid 1990’s on multiple remodel projects on both the Desert and Mountain courses (36 holes). PDC helped the Vintage develop specifically different landscape concepts and palettes for both courses, the desert course being more native to the regional palette and the mountain course having a more lush palette with mass planting beds. Overall, Pinnacle has designed and oversaw construction on 120 acres of landscape at the Vintage, including 13 lakes and 200 lf of streams.

BBOOT RANCH GOLF CLUB

Fredricksberg, Texas, USA

oot Ranch, a golf course community located in Texas hill country, hired Pinnacle Design to help them design a village as their central community center. Along side clubhouse architect Marsh & Associates, PDC developed landscape plans for a new clubhouse, restaurants, event spaces, villas, swimming pools, sports courts, and a trail system that ran througout their property. (More detail of our work on this community center is in our ‘Golf Clubhouses and Amenities’ brochure). On the golf course, PDC worked with Hal Sutton to define grasslands and wildflowers zones outside of golf turf areas. PDC also designed and provided construction observation services for several water features throughout the course, including waterfalls made with natural and artificial rock and seasonal stream channels.

PPELICAN HILL GOLF CLUB

Newport Coast, California, USA

elican Hill Golf Club and Resort, which has two 18-hole Tom Fazio courses, is one of the finest resort courses in the United States & overlooks the Pacific Ocean. Pinnacle Design has been their golf course landscape architect since 2003 and have helped renovate or design over 28 acres of landscape ($23 million in total renovation projects) on their golf course and surrounding amenities. During the major golf course renovation project in 2004, we recreated 15+ acres of native CSS (coastal sage scrub) plant communities while removing irrigated turf & non native landscape beds on the existing golf course. These new native areas that were required partially to expand the nesting grounds for the endangered Gnatcatcher bird species received environmental credits and allowed our client to expand their resort hotel footprint.

MMONTEREY PENINSULA CC - DUNES COURSE

Pebble Beach, California, USA

onterey Peninsula Country Club is a 36-hole golf development along the Monterey coastline in northern California. The Dunes course was a historic Seth Raynor design that over decades of remodel work by various other architects was transformed into a very average parkland-style golf course. From 2013 to 2017, PDC worked with Jackson/Kahn Design andTom Fazio

Golf Course Designers to change this historic course back to linksstyle seaside gem, that would soon garner US top 100 accolades. PDC helped remove 22 acres of turf area – drastically reducing the total water usage – and recreated seaside dunes by vegetating the sandy areas with native dune shrubs, grasses, and wildflowers. PDC also addressed eroded historic drainage channels that had been neglected and not part of the golf aesthetic, and upgraded them into elegant streams that now accent the golf hole aesthetically and strategically.

AESTANCIA

Scottsdale Arizona, USA

t Estancia, Fazio Golf Course Designers routed an 18-hole championahip golf course gently through and amongst the foothills of Pinnacle Peak in north Scottsdale. The desert re-vegetation was a primary component of the golf design and an especially arduous task considering the level of grading detail that was performed at the edges of disturbance, against the rocky mountainsides. Pinnacle Design laid out 42 acres of re-vegetation areas adjacent to the golf holes and working closely with the Fazio design group, field-located desert trees, shrubs, and cacti and worked closely with the golf course architect on a weekly basis to ensure that a seamless edge was achieved between the new and old nature.

OHILLCREST GOLF CLUB

ne of the most prominent clubs in the Los Angeles area, Hillcrest Country Club hired Pinnacle Design in 2001 to assist the late John Harbottle on a restoration project. From 2001 until 2019, Pinnacle consulted on various landscape projects on the golf course. In 2019, the club hired Kyle Phillips to embark on a major remodel. The objectives of the project were to modernize the course with a new irrigation system, new grasses, and a more open layout. Pinnacle assisted Phillips with the tree removal and transplant project. Trees were removed from the interior of the course, openingupviewsoftheCityskylinefromseveralgolfholes, and some of these trees - along with new trees - were re-planted on the outer boundaries of the golf course to screen undesirable views and enclose and frame golf holes. New landscape zones and open areas of mulch were added to reduce turf and overall water costs. Pinnacle also designed a new outdoor event space for the club as well provided landscape designs for their tennis facilities, cart staging areas, and new teaching facility.

PANNADALE GOLF CLUB

Pasadena, California, USA

innacle Design began work for Annandale GC in 2015 during a major drought period in California. Working with the course superintendent, PDC proposed to transform about 20 acres of turf into low, medium, and high density landscape planting zones, as well as a low-water use meadow grasslands zone. At this time, the water districts in southern California were offering rebates to golf courses using domestic water. PDC was the liason between the water district and Annandale to ensure they would qualify for the rebate, making the affordability of the turf reduction palatable for the club. All landscape zones were drip-irrigated, and all zones were field-located to ensure playability of the golf course was not negatively impacted. The turf reduction project was a great success and Pinnacle Design remains as Annandale’s landscape architect to this day, helping them with thier future course renovations.

ELDORADO COUNTRY CLUB

Indian Wells, California, USA

Eldorado is one of the oldest clubs in the Coachella valley, opening in 1957. In 2002, Pinnacle worked with Tom Fazio and his team to ressurect this classic course, which had seen a decrease in membership in the 1990’s. The golf course in 2002 was mostly flat with a few lakes and virtually no landscape component. The goal of the major re-imagination project was to modernize the features of the golf course and bring undulation, more interest and beauty to the golf corridors. Pinnacle designed three major stream systems as well as 12 acres of new ornamental landscape. Occupying only 120 acres, the golf course had narrow corridors to begin with, so the new landscape areas needed to be strategically and carefully placed so as not to hinder the playability of the golf course. The course re-opened in 2003 and today they are regarded as one of the top 100 residential golf course memberships in the country. ECC went from 145 members before the project to an ‘invitation only’ membership with a waiting list in 2022. From 2003 to present day, PDC has continued to design and consult with the club on their golf course and various amenities around their property.

Following that work, Pinnacle was hired to review the entire property for opportunities to reduce turf envelope and add low-water use landscape areas to reduce their overall water costs and improve their landscape aesthetics.

At the same time,Todd Eckenrode with Origins Design was hired to do a renovation of the golf course. PDC worked with Todd to develop a masterplanfortheturfreduction/landscapeimprovementprojectthat fit with his goals on the golf renovation project. In the end, Pinnacle designed 22 acres of new landscape areas, screening the undesirable perimeters with high density plantings and opening up the interior of the course with rustic low density plantings in a mulch groundcover.

n 2004, Pinnacle Design was hired alongside Fazio Golf Designers to create a most unique golf product in Cabo San Lucas. The goal of the project was to create a golf course that would appear as if it had been laid ontop of the natural terrain and within the natural vegetation. Bunkers would be rugged, the landscapewouldbe100%native,andtherewouldbenorough(verydifferentthan typical Fazio projects at that time). However, to achieve an 18 hole golf course on the site given to them, Fazio was required to move a large amount of earthwork.

As a result, Pinnacle Design was tasked with a major native revegetation project. Prior to grading and clearing operations, PDC walked the hole centerlines with Fazio’s design team and local contractors during to field locate specimen plants, cacti, and trees to salvage and store in an on-site nursery. After grading was complete and turflines were established, we first laid out the large specimen trees with the golf architect and then continued to fieldlocate all smaller cacti, trees, and native plants in the native re-vegetation zones. The project stalled due to the economic downturn in 2006, but was ressurected and opened for play in 2009 under new ownership. Today, Chileno Bay is regarded as one of the best value’s for golf in the Cabo San Lucas region.

rook Hollow is a high profile private club built in the golden age of golf architecture by one of the most prolific architects of that time period, AW Tillinghast. In 2019, Keith Foster Golf Architect was hired to restore the golf course back to its golden age design.

As is common with all golden age resoration projects, trees had been allowed to crowd the golf holes, so many trees needed to be cleared out of the interior of the property in order for Keith to re-create theTillinghast design concepts and turf playing conditions. Pinnacle was hired to assist Keith with the landscape design associated with the restoration. PDC designed about 9 acres of new landscape beds, both on the perimeter for screening undesirable views, and on the interior in the form of open sandy grasslands. Many trees from the interior were transplanted to the perimeters. PDC also helped the club to upgrade their clubhouse exterior landscape and hardscape areas, including cart staging areas, outdoor dining areas, new circulation pathways, and a firepit feature.

The club hired Pinnacle Design to come up with a turf reduction master plan (totaling about 40 acres) that the club could implement in multiple phases. The club implemented phase I of the turf reduction plan and soon after they hired Todd Eckenrode with Origins Golf Design to modernize the golf course in both length, playability and aesthetics. PDC and Eckenrode worked together to implement the 2nd phase of the turf reduction plan in a 2018 major remodel project on the golf course. In the end, El Nigeul reduced their turf footprint by roughly 30%, created a much more visually stunning golf course and maintained good playability for all levels of golfer, while creating a much more visually stunning golf experience.
