Hot glue and razor blades. I don’t know about you, but nothing says holiday crafts to me like hot glue and razor blades. We’ve been playing around a lot with thick wool felt lately, and came up with some fun craft ideas for you, dear Pink Spots reader. Felt is an unusual material in that it doesn’t fray, it’s not damaged by water or heat, it can make three dimensional shapes, and it is available in many fun colors! Not to mention the fact that almost any scrap can be turned into a component of another piece. This project lends itself well to lots of creative play! It’s been a really tough year, and I think that we all could use some more creativity in our life right now. Crafting is an excellent way to get out of one’s head and into a flow state. The fruits of your labor could be used as a trivet to protect your table from the hot dish of whatever delicious holiday meal you are serving, coasters for your cocktails, ornaments for a tree, or just something beautiful to hang on your wall! Work big, work small, use one color or many; just have fun, and be sure to keep a small dish of cool water on hand in case you need to touch and shape hot glue or in case you already burned yourself. Your essential tools are a hot glue gun, ruler, cutting board, and either safety razor blades or an X-Acto knife. Other useful tools include fabric shears (not paper scissors!), a self-healing cutting mat, Olfa rotary cutter, leather/felt punch, a sturdy needle and thread, and a gridded quilting ruler. (photo 1) The essential material is a heavy weight wool or synthetic felt - we used a wool felt that is a bit more than 1/8” thick and pretty firm. (We have limited amounts and colors available for sale in 12” x 36” pieces - message us on IG to purchase.) Use your imagination - other materials you have on hand may also work well for this. Your first task is to cut strips of felt. We used 3/8” and 3/4” wide strips in the demonstration pieces, but you can use whatever proportion is most pleasing to you. (photo 2) Cut three pieces at 8.5” inches long, three pieces at 4” inches long, and 12 pieces at 4.75” inches long. If it is important to you that your final geometric shape be quite regular, be sure to minimize irregularity in your cut lengths. (photo 3) Felt can be a bit chunky, so we found it important to bevel the ends of the felt in most cases for a better aesthetic effect. Lay the strip on a flat surface and using your blade, start about 1/4”-3/8” from the end and shave off a triangle of felt. You can also achieve this by laying your sharp scissors almost flat against the face of the felt strip and doing the same action, which is easier than it sounds. (photos 4, 5)

Now heat up that hot glue gun, and let’s get to work! You are going to make loops, circles, and teardrop shapes and then combine them into a pleasing geometric combination. The longest pieces are the most complicated to assemble. Bevel one end and complete a small circle with a small dab of hot glue on the beveled edge. Pinch the pieces together until the glue sets, then bevel the other end and loop it over. Add another dab of hot glue and create the 2nd circle. Make three of these shapes, and then use hot glue to attach the centers together. Be sure to lay the pieces on a flat surface while the glue is setting so that your end result is flat. (photos 6, 7) For the single circles, bevel one end then flip the piece onto to the other face and bevel the opposite end. Then add a spot of glue to one bevel and press beveled edges together to form a circle. Hold until set. (photo 8) To make teardrop shapes, bevel opposite ends on the same felt face, add glue to one bevel, and press bevels together until set. (photo 9) Now the really fun part begins! Arrange your shapes (as we did or make up your own pattern). And spot glue together in the appropriate places; I like to chalk them first. (Photos 10, 11) Remove any threads of hot glue. If you end up with blobs of glue where you don’t want it, carefully shave it off with a razor blade. Now the really fun part begins! Arrange your shapes (as we did or make up your own pattern).
