InthisartworkIhavepaintedaportraitofanumber skinnedwomanwiththickafro hair.Ididsowiththeuseofopaqueacrylicsandseveraltechniquestocontributetothe naturalismandrealismIwasaimingtoconvey.Firstly,forthispaintingIusedastrongopacityof acoolcoloredbrownforherskintoneandseveraltonalrangesofthesamehuetoeffectively portraytheshadesandhighlightsinherface.Yet despitethetintsandtonesofherskincolorI
preferredtohavealimitedpaletteanddidnotexceedtheuseofthreecolorstoensurethatthe focusremainsonthewoman’scharacteristicsratherthanthevibranceofthepainting.Inthese fourcolorsthatIchosetoinclude,theonlyapparentutilizationofcomplementarycolorscanbe seenintheredlipsandthebrightgreenbackgroundthatcreatesasmallbutobviouscontrast. Moreover,thedenselytonedfeatures,herthickandextensivehair,andthelargeproportionof darkcolorsinmypaintinggiveitasfumatosensation andprovideashadedandmysterious contributiontomyearthyportrait.Finally,Iusedscumblingtechniquesforherrosycheeks,her darkertones,thetintsnearhereyes,andespecially inthetonesofhergoldennecklace.
ForthisartworkIfirstlysketchedthebasiccharacteristics ofanolive-browncolored womanandproceededbyillustratingitwiththeuse ofcoloredpencils.InthiscaseIusedan extensivepalettewithawiderrangeofwarmcolors andagreatertonalrangeduetotheunusual viewpointandlightoftheimageIwasinspiredby.Themajorityoftheartworkwasdrawnwith limitedopacity;however,Iwassuretouseagreatlyopaquelemonyellowforherclothingto extendtheintensityofmyartworkandcatchtheviewers attentionwithavibranthue.Iused maroonandmanyotherdifferenttonesofskincolorforthemajorityofherface,butalsotintsto showwherethelighthitthroughascumblingtechnique. Therestofmydrawingwasdonewith moreplayful,directional,andgesturallinestohighlight certainfeaturesandtocreatealess realisticbutmoreabstractartwork.
