EDITOR’S NOTE Dear readers, Welcome to the second digital edition of Pineword! We are excited to share with you the Winter edition of 2020-21 of our Journalism Club’s magazine. The readership's response to the first electronic edition of our magazine warmed our hearts with pride and lifted our spirits high. We are more than ever motivated and thrilled to continue writing and sharing with you bits and pieces of our intellect and quirky thoughts. We have said adieu to 2020 and we have started 2021 on a sweet note, one that is low-key, smooth and soft. No grandiose statements, no life-altering acknowledgements; just a quiet and reflective collection of articles, fine-tuned to walk you through winter time like a blues song. Having said that, are you familiar with the term ‘slow scholarship’? Have a look at this research snippet and contemplate on your productivity levels compared to lazy ants’ levels:

Well? Slow scholarship refers to taking your research and studies slow. Slow academia is a response to the anxiety machine that is pressure from oneself and others. It prompts us to set ideas ripe and brew assignments gradually, rather than submit them half-baked; to connect with friends and spend time away from the screen so that when we return to work we can tackle tasks with a fresh pair of eyes. This of course relates to the classic dilemma: quantity over quality or quality over quantity? We advise you to slow down, focus on micro problem-solving and on building up your skillset step by step, following the Atomic Habits principle (proclaiming that achieving just 1% improvement each time will bring you 100% improvement in no time). So, sit down comfortably and read our Winter edition one page at a time with a cup of tea or coffee in one hand and a cookie in the other. We thank you for your time in advance and for your incessant enthusiasm and support in sustaining the Journalism Club. We wish you happy readings of Pineword’s Winter edition of 2020-21! by The Editor Dr Zoi Tsiviltidou Grade 4 Teacher READ MORE about our JOURNALISM CLUB here!

THE EARTH NEEDS YOU DO YOUR PART TO HELP

by Kalypso Isaidou In today's political and social climates it wouldn't be surprising if everyone had different ideas of what the most important issue is. Probably any issue you are thinking of right now is significant on a global scale. That's just how problematic the world is today. But to solve all these burdens, all these injustices, all these issues, we must save this planet first. If there is no future for Earth, then there is no future for us, or any other animals or plants thriving on it. Many of these creatures are already facing extinction as a result of our actions. We are the ones who replace natural ecosystems and forests with our own materialistic needs. We are the ones who burn so much unrenewable energy that we have permanently damaged the carbon emissions. We are the ones who do not care enough to change the way we live. If we continue this way as a population, then we are the ones not showing hope for the future, for solving any issues that so many people are faced with. Every individual counts. Maybe you think in the big picture one person makes no difference. But actually one person makes a very big difference. Maybe there are setbacks to making a difference due to the reliance on industries and transportation, but these things take time. It's not overnight. But the sooner we start trying and adapting to better ways, the sooner things are actually heading in a better direction.

The little things we can do: ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

Rely less on disposable material and start using long-lasting ones. Buy from brands that make sustainable clothes, as opposed to mass production. Use eco-friendly packaging, materials and plastics. Cut back on the amount of meat you consume. Rely less on vehicle transportation, which means walking or cycling whenever possible. Reduce, reuse, recycle. Reduce the amount of waste you create or the amount of water you use. Reuse materials (clothes, papers, packaging). Recycle plastics, glass, paper, cardboard, aluminium.

The long-term goals: ●

● ● ● ● ●

Depending on renewable energy (wind, water, etc.) rather than burning fossil fuels, these are coal, petrol and gas, which are causing the masses of damage to the Earth’s atmosphere. World governments should provide infrastructures to facilitate the necessary changes, this means transportation, energy resources, water systems, etc. Discard plenty of agricultural and industrial lands and instead allow nature to grow back into the system. Lessen the amount of overall meat consumed daily, remember that this planet has not been made to facilitate billions of meat-eaters. Companies should stop using mass-production and fast fashion to facilitate their own needs. Stop disturbing rainforests and natural environments, in an effort to allow them to grow untouched by people.

In just a century, as people, we have made such an awful impact on this planet, so it is time to give back what we took. There are so many ways to help that will take time. But that is no reason to wait. This planet is not waiting for us. It's already reacting to our every action. So, do your part to help. WILL WE EVER GO TO THE CINEMA AGAIN? LIFE AFTER NETFLIX

By Kalypso Isaidou Globally, under Covid-19 regulations and safety, the enclosed auditoriums of local cinemas have been banned from opening. As a result, the making and release of many movies are being delayed until 2021 or further notice. Although this means a large lack in the entertainment business for ending 2020, there are so many iconic movies to be released when things clear up just a touch. Before introducing these impressive films, I would like you to take a moment to consider the following question: Will Netflix be the new cinema? During these unprecedented periods of lockdown, the majority of us have spent extensive time watching movies and series on Netflix, oftentimes for much-deserved quality self-care, or family and friend time. We have talked about Netflix and depended on it; we have argued and laughed about series ranks and movie trends; we have become fully addicted to it. But what will life after Netflix look like? Will our love for the cinematic atmosphere find its spark again? I believe so. I believe that once free to go to the cinema again, we will revamp our enthusiasm for such a euphoric and familiar experience like this. So, read below about what thrilling films to expect.

Dune ● Sci-Fi The highly anticipated movie, Dune, starring the immaculate Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya has been postponed to come in theatres until October 2021. The trailer has been released as of September and shows a lot of promising scenes in the intriguing planets based on Frank Herbet’s novel. Not giving away too much, Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet) goes on a journey to one of the most dangerous places and leads his nomadic tribe into battle in order to ensure the future of his family and his people.

No Time to Die ● Action The last 007 film starring Daniel Craig is said to release April 2021, this James Bond period has definitely been an iconic one, so the last film is of course bound to be a show-stopper. In this movie, under all the thrills and intricate details, James Bond, a secret agent, is ordered to recapture a kidnapped scientist, however villainous Safin (Rami Malek) comes in the way with new and dangerous technology. It’s nearly time for Daniel Craig to save the world yet again so be ready to watch it when restrictions lift.

Pineword 16

A Quiet Place Part II ● Horror New sequel to the ever-praised A Quiet Place, starring the wonderful; Emily Blunt and John Krasinski, A Quiet Place Part II is said to release at the end of April 2021. Although the silence from the first movie has never left us, it has also never left the movie either. While the family struggle with a newborn baby to find safety and survival in a world demolished by a blind, fast creature, they must all still remain as quiet and untrackable as possible. The new outside world and undiscovered mysteries however stand as a tough obstacle for them. The French Dispatch ● Comedy Yet another Timothee Chalamet movie to come out unannounced in 2021, the French Dispatch is a Wes Anderson movie following a comedic pattern of thought. A European publishing company decide to dedicate a paper of the top three stories of their year, which are as follows: an artist sentenced to life imprisonment, riots by students and a kidnapping case resolved by a chef. Although yet to figure out how these issues circle their lives, The French Dispatch provides a light, airy piece taking place during the 20th Century in the otherwise rough, modern time we are living. Note that the movie is actually in English, so no need to learn French in the set of a few months. All these movies are said to be sensational for the upcoming year, so there is of course a lot to look forward to after the dreads of 2020. Last year should have taught us how often we take the small things for granted, like going to the cinema, so make sure in 2021 you fully appreciate it and everything else. Still, remember to stay positive and look at the bright side of things, regardless of what is to come.

DISCOVER YOUR IDENTITY WHO ARE YOU REALLY?

by Alexandra Diamantopoulou This is a quiz I found where it tells you who you are. It is really enjoyable, so if you’d like to figure out who you are, give it a go! https://you.visualdna.com/quiz/whoami#!/quiz When I was younger I would usually find myself wondering if I fit in with the role I am meant to play in life. I would constantly try to connect the dots that every idea and action of ours is the result of our upbringing, environment influences and the people around us. However, have you ever been caught in your thoughts that your personality plays a bigger role in your decision making? Could it all be the primary source of why you react, think and behave the way you do? I relate to a struggle to set up a title for myself. I surely possessed 14,5 years of my life as Alexandra, yet, still who is Alexandra? I find myself trying to connect the dots while searching for an answer in personality tests. I do that because I slowly realize that I’m myself’s greatest asset, my real competitive advantage towards the world. So far I can identify myself from the choices I make, to whom I am related, who are my friends, what I like to do in my free time, or even while at school. By doing so, we can learn a lot about ourselves by the subjects we enjoy in school, but still, does the real magic happen because of a subject itself or the teacher who teaches it? It's a bit confusing!

Pineword 21

Pineword 22

The surrounding environment shapes to a great extent what we really enjoy to do. Family, friends and the school itself determine different kinds of factors that form our individual preferences. That is an introduction to life itself, as we slowly realize or not that we cannot like something just because we actually favor it, but the things we love are actually the aftermath of socializing. Doing our favorite performances with others is what gives us joy and it truly provides a valuable chance to take advantage of our qualities while improving them. Our personal interests are developed interactively from our childhood but we quickly realize that our interests have to become aspirations of our career choices and career prospects. This is how we finally conclude to find our inner selves at least to a point where we enter adulthood. Yes, our personality is shaped randomly by what is surrounding us. What happens is based on an interactive mode which does not necessarily have a negative effect on us as a person who constantly needs and has to gain knowledge and experience. Yet, we should keep reminding ourselves that our mind and soul should play an important role in the things we love and adore to do. We have to keep looking, searching for them, considering ourselves not just human vases being shipped off the product line. ACTING THROUGH LIFE AND WHY WE SHOULD WRITE MORE

by Josephine De Cataldo We have all watched performances that have moved us, no matter what language or genre; from “Saw” to “Dead Poets Society” we have all put ourselves in a character's position. From the TV screens or the seats in front of the stage, we only see a small part of the actors’ hard work. It might look easy to do what the actor is doing, or to imitate their actions, but how many of you have actually tried doing it? Truth is, there is a long process that goes into bringing a character to life. An actor's job never stops, it takes years of practice and a lot of rehearsing to be able to use the tools that were given without hesitation. It also takes a lot of energy and mental work to get out of character, a process which is equally as important. There are a thousand ways an actor can mess up a scene and there is only one way they can get it right. The way one actor plays a scene and the way another one does can be both correct, but delivered quite differently. This is because every person is different; a violin can never produce the same melody a piano can, even if they are playing the same notes. This is why every actor must find their own identity and see what characters they would fit in best. What type of roles they are able to bring to life. For an actor to find which category they truly belong to they must do a lot of mental and physical preparation. When a scene or monologue is handed to them, memorizing the lines is only a small preparation of the work. They need to learn who their character is and what the situation is, then they need to go through an emotional preparation to put them in their shoes. There are specific exercises

Pineword 25

Pineword 26

that help with that. The actor has to complete this process with every character that they choose to play, no matter how big or the small the production is. At the end of playing the character, the actor must also know how to get out of character. There needs to be a line between the character slife and their actors. If that line is blurred then a misbalance occurs. This can cause trauma to the actor especially if something traumatic happens to their character. After a scene sometimes a few moments need to be taken to just stretch or wiggle it out, depending on the actor and on the experience this might be easier or harder for some people to do. This is why it is important to be patient with yourself and the process. Everyone gets there at their own pace. To be an actor is beautiful, but it takes a lot of work and one must go in that profession only if they have the passion for it because otherwise it would not be worth it. As an actor your job never ends, there are no vacations and you always have to have your tools with you, because humans are inconsistent but your tools will always be there to help you even when you aren't in the best of moods to perform a piece. There are no shortcuts, hard work is the only thing that will help you succeed. It takes discipline and organization. These are all the factors that shaped your favourite movie characters that you watch and admire today. EVERYDAY SCIENCE ARE VINYLS BETTER THAN CDs?

by Pavlos Paraschoudis How many times have you seen a young adult put on a vinyl record to relax in real life, not in a film? How many times have you been to a casual party and the music playing was from a cassette? If your answer is: I don’t remember seeing any, then read on. Cassettes, vinyls, CDs are not obsolete or archaic. They are still cool. Physical music media, even in the digital age, are still being produced and sold in retail stores as well as in smaller stores solely dedicated to selling vinyls and CDs. It seems like they are not going anywhere anytime soon, especially in pop culture. In other words, they are more relevant than ever. Many Netflix series have adapted a retro style, including vinyls, to a target audience that might have never used vinyls. They might not even know what napster is rather than vinyls. This resurgence of vinyl culture might have evidently been the reason why 2019 has seen an increase in physical media sales compared to 2018. Even cassettes sales have been revived! However, this new trend of physical media might be one sided. In September of 2019, vinyls managed to outsell CDs for the first time since 1986. Given the progress of technology in that period of time, this is no easy feat. So, it is clear that modern audiophiles, a name given to people who buy physical media, have a clear preference of vinyls over CDs. But why? Is there even a difference between the two? Are vinyls really better than CDs?

Pineword 29

Pineword 30

First of all, what do we mean by better? Well, when it comes to music, sound comes first and foremost. Without getting into too much detail, vinyls produce analog sound and CDs produce digital sound. The main difference between the two comes lies in recording and reproducing the sound. For the analog recording, songs are physically carved on a vinyl’s surface rather than digitally compressed on a disk. That means, since there is no compression involved, vinyls reproduce the original recording in greater detail. However, when it comes to practicality, CDs have an advantage over vinyls. Have you ever listened to an album and the song you don’t like starts playing? You just skip that song right? Well… This is not the case with vinyls. With vinyls you have to first stand up, this already sounds difficult for some, then go to your turntable, raise the needle, move it and carefully place it onto the song you want to listen to. If you are not careful enough, you might scratch your beloved vinyl or, even worse, damage the turntable’s needle, which can be very costly. Speaking of cost, the average cost of a CD is around 10-15€. But, an average vinyl will cost you 20-30€. They can go as far as 50€ especially if it is a limited print or some kind of anniversary edition. However, the real expenses start when you include all the equipment each physical media needs. To play CDs you need a CD player and stereo speakers which combined cost around 80-100€. To play vinyls you will need a turntable, an amplifier and HiFi speakers which all of them can range from expensive to very, very expensive. Of course there are cheaper alternatives, surely, but to play a vinyl how it is supposed to be played you will need to spend some extra cash. Then, why all this fuss about this outdated, impractical, and expensive piece of technology? Do people sacrifice everything just for the benefit of having better sound quality? Well, this might be what some people think, and by people I am referring to the ones who have never used a vinyl before. The people that have used or are still using vinyls today know that it is still worth it. People still love and continue to love vinyls, either if they are old folks or young people. This love is a combination of nostalgia, sense of community and human desire to experience new things. This whole “changing song” process is often described as “the ritual” among vinyl enthusiasts because this is what makes vinyls unique from CDs or streaming services. As an audiophile myself, I have to admit that listening to “all time classic” songs in vinyls, like they were supposed to be played, gives me a feeling of traveling back in time when the songs just came out. Old songs from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s were supposed to be played on vinyls. It is a unique experience among people who feel connected to their music and want more from what it has to offer. So, that being said, are vinyls better than CDs? If it helps you enjoy music more, I would say yes, it is better. If you prefer CDs because you feel more connected to CDs, that is fine. Every person has their own taste in music as well as how it is being played and enjoyed. Personally, I’ll stick with vinyls; it’s just cooler than CDs.

ARE YOU BORED? MAYBE YOU ARE JUST SLEEPY

by The Editor Many of us associate boredom with procrastination, the lack of motivation or a challenge. But have you ever thought how it relates to the quality of your sleep? Not the quantity but the quality of it. Being bored is an emotional and psychological state of mind when being unwillingly idle or dull with no activities to do, frustrates or wears you down. It often leads to the loss of even the slightest inch of motivation and the cycle goes on and on. There is no universal definition for boredom. People get tired of doing the same thing in the same manner for a long period of time and might get bored of it. It is a mental state that leaves them craving relief. But maybe it all happens because you are just sleepy. Going to bed late has been associated with boredom as research suggests that boredom proneness, fidgeting, and mind wandering relate to bedtime procrastination and tiredness. Procrastination is a prevalent and problematic phenomenon that has mostly been studied

Pineword 35

Pineword 36

in the domain of academic behavior. Research shows that procrastination may also lead to harmful outcomes in the area of health behavior, introducing bedtime procrastination as an important factor related to getting insufficient sleep and consequently affecting individual well-being. Bedtime procrastination was negatively associated with self-regulation: people who scored lower on self-regulation variables reported more bedtime procrastination. Moreover, self-reported bedtime procrastination was related to general reports of insufficient sleep above and beyond demographics and self-regulation. The notion that procrastination is problematic, then, is supported by studies showing that procrastinators typically perform more poorly in various domains including academic achievements and work activities. Getting sufficient sleep is increasingly being recognized as essential for people to function in an optimal way, with studies showing that sleep deficiency is related to concentration and memory problems, but also to more severe outcomes such as obesity, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. Different from many other health behaviors that are either or not performed, going to bed is more a matter of “when” rather than “if.” As such, going to bed is a typical health behavior that can be postponed (i.e., that people can procrastinate on). Therefore, our prediction is to find a negative relation between action orientation and bedtime procrastination. A POEM WE WROTE FOR YOU Our souls at night come alive once more. In the devil's hour we are the only ones who can afford to love throughout this long hour that was given to us. The pride that we hold on top of our heads like books of history given as homework are left behind. Meet me in the palace of shadows where we can afford to love once more. Even if only for this hour on this eternal life, your hands now belong to me. During the devil's hour, our souls at night run free.
