Dear readers,

Welcome to the third digital edition of Pineword!

We are excited to share with you the Spring edition of 2020-21 of our Journalism Club’s magazine. Springtime calls for reflection, a cultivation of self-love, and a bit of rejuvenation.

This freshness or insight is associated with blossoming hopes, revitalising adventures and the sun-kissed healing of any harshness that winter left behind. We are neither naive nor over-optimistic to say that the best is yet to come. We are still here, writing for you and sharing with you our thoughts and opinions.

In that spirit, I’d like to share with you a thought about progress, expectations and self-encouragement. Many times we do not appreciate the time we (have to) put into our advancement because we expect with little or quick effort to get great results and long-lasting rewards. But growth requires patience (a lot of it), commitment and resilience.

So, if you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping in a room with a mosquito.

Also, as the days grow longer, we are reminded of the magic of a warm starry night with flickering lights above our heads. Artificial light at night has revolutionized the way we live and work outdoors, but it has come at a price. When used indiscriminately, outdoor lighting can disrupt wildlife, impact human health, waste money, and energy, contribute to climate change, and block our view of the universe. Keep that in mind the next time you enjoy a walk in the countryside at golden hour or at dawn.

Walking embodies presence in motion, presence at once with ourselves and with the world, inner and outer. In other words, an active presence of body and mind, which Rebecca Solnit in Wanderlust: A history of walking (2014) captures in the opening pages:

“Where does it start? Muscles tense. One leg is a pillar, holding the body upright between the earth and sky. The other a pendulum, swinging from behind. Heel touches down. The whole weight of the body rolls forward onto the ball of the foot. The big toe pushes off, and the delicately balanced weight of the body shifts again. The legs reverse position. It starts with a step and then another step and then another that adds up like taps on a drum to a rhythm, the rhythm of walking. The most obvious and the most obscure thing in the world, this walking that wanders so readily into religion, philosophy, landscape, urban policy, anatomy, allegory, and heartbreak.”

Indeed, the metaphysical wanderings that the physical act precipitates are what makes walking transcend its utilitarian purpose of bipedal mobility. The rhythm of walking generates a kind of rhythm of thinking, and the passage through a landscape echoes or stimulates the passage through a series of thoughts. And if that is not enough for you, just remember that as Ralph Waldo Emerson is believed to have stated ‘the Earth laughs in flowers’. What better reason do you want?

We urge you to stroll through a wild field, weave through dazzling flowerbeds, stumble upon exotic gardens (nature in Thessaloniki might truly surprise you!), learn more about sustainable foods and celebrate the ways we can live in harmony with the natural world.

FASHION IN RETROSPECT ‘50s to ‘00s: Fashion Icons Who Defined their Decades

By Kalypso Isaidou 1950s Audrey Hepburn Famous for her roles in movies such as Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Roman Holiday, Audrey Hepburn inspired a new simple definition of 1950s fashion. For a period in which many women were confined to what they were told to wear, Audrey Hepburn was a breath of fresh air. Her simple silhouettes and minimal colours showed many women that fashion didn’t have to be complex or intricate, but true to one’s self. Additionally, her casual style inspired the more relaxed clothing for other women in forms such as slacks, head scarves and flat shoes.

James Dean Hollywood actor James Dean led the style influence for the ‘50s through his well-known movies. With a style mainly based on simple, timeless combinations, he became a new emblem of teenage flair and rebellion. His clothes very much define ‘old Hollywood’ with neutral colours and designs through trench-coats, shirts and jeans.

1960s Jimi Hendrix With both musical and fashion influence, Jimi Hendrix soared through the 1960s and helped reshape fashion of the time. With eclectic and obscure fashion choices Jimi Hendrix created the trends that evolved around both the hippie and rock and roll images. With clashing patterns, textures and colours, every outfit and concert costume worn by him were statements like no other.

Many of these patterns were psychedelic, floral and unseen before, really putting every emphasis on both his music and aesthetic for everyone to follow.

Twiggy Most known by her nickname ‘Twiggy,’ as a model she established a new age of fashion in the ‘60s through her work. Using sharp and bold colours throughout her wardrobe, Twiggy really epitomized the brightness that was followed in the 1960s, as seen in designers like Mary Quant. Also, with her own boyish style she really showed people to push between boundaries and of course started ‘Twiggy lashes,’ the false lower lash effect that is still celebrated widely.

1970s Diana Ross As the center of disco and music in the 1970s, Diana Ross set the glittering new scene for fashion of that decade. Her legacy of sequins and sparkle led disco culture throughout the ‘70s with her own unique twist. Diana Ross’ elaborate dresses and jumpsuits brought new elegance in an unseen, free and glowing way. Her mark left both the stage and the decade inspired in a loose and spirited way with not only glamour but with a fresh revival in the world of fashion.

Elton John With the most legendary on stage and everyday looks, Elton John’s fashion throughout the ‘70s created both drama and eye-catching outfits.

With outrageous and funky twists on every look, he inspired gender-breaking flamboyance and colourful clothes. His concert costumes consisted of themes lavished down to every detail and a sense of whimsy to each item. Not to mention his example of matching suits, lapel collars and big, vibrant glasses motivated a lot of what 1970 clothes were focused on.

1980s Madonna The ‘80s brought many new vibrant and patterned changes but none so ecstatic as those set by Madonna. Her image as set by her presence in rising pop music was set as unconventional and striking. Madonna incorporated many different materials with her brightly coloured outfits and accessories to make a statement with each piece. She led many trends such as large earrings, bangles and undergarments as well as daring hair and makeup. Madonna started a revolution in which women were fearless of what they wore no matter how quirky or how it was worn.

Princess Diana Perhaps one of the most looked-up to women in fashion, Princess Diana became more than just royalty, but also a sign of care and self-expression through clothes. Whilst many things such as her hair, jewellery, and casual clothes were made popular by many women it never took away from her unique style. For events, Princess Diana ceaselessly amazed people with her stunning ball gowns and coloured sets, and on the daily, her radiant knitwear, funky skirts and jumpers mirrored her personality. Princess Diana brought a new sense of self-identity to clothing and showed people the true significance of expressing themselves.

1990s Tupac Shakur With a change in scene came new inspirations from rap and hip hop but none were like the effect of Tupac Shakur. Not only did he become a relatable and refreshing figure for the public, but he also brought about a new coolness and hip to streetwear.

Tupac ignited many well-known ‘90s trends such as baggy dungarees, bucket hats and sweatshirts, and even popularizing chains and bandanas. His presence in the 1990s erupted in so much more than music but also in showing that bold street style would be a bigger trend over the coming years.

The Spice Girls Individuals of the ‘90s set aside, in many ways the Spice Girls collectively showed many different people how to express themselves in what they wear. Victoria Beckham showed the ever-important minimalistic touch of the ‘90s, Mel B set the growing trend of animal print, Geri Halliwell hyped feminist ideas and union jack fads in clothing, Mel C brought about retro sportswear and trainers and Emma Bunton, the towering platform shoes and girly glow. Each of the Spice Girls may have contributed to different and well-known ‘90s trends, but together they defined the decade in daring and self-assertive fashion.

2000s Devon Aoki Leading multiple runways in the decade, Devon Aoki’s stand-out presence in many brands guided her own style and then the global crazes of the 2000s. Cultivated by designers like Karl Lagerfield and being the new face of Versace, her place in the fashion world set ‘00s trends such as low-waisted jeans, mini-skirts, trimmed tops and spiked hair and even brought about punk-like alternatives in everyday fashion.

Beyoncé From the matching outfit thrills that came with Destiny’s Child Beyoncé emerged and brought about even more influence to the 2000s. While a lot of her outfits, colour and style often changed, they all brought about originality with each item. Beyoncé delivered the world with trends such as fringe, denim, camouflage, and glittery ensembles that struck the ‘00s. Her style, with Western and cowboy-like twists, showed people this new-era of personalized touches on clothing.

The perks of communication at school I smile but I cry at the same time

Ιn a classroom we are expected to socialize with one another, especially now that the times we live in are difficult and emotionally-challenging. One of the main highlights in socializing is communication with one another. Communication can be a tricky task on its own; but within a class, it can be even more complicated. The way teachers expect us to interact with each other might be completely different from the one that high-schoolers have in mind. We all have different characters that express differently when they try to reach out to people. Some might express their emotions through happiness, or some can express them by being nervous or even easy going.

In a school environment every individual comes in contact with one another and sometimes communication can be an issue that troubles everyone and causes a mess all over the place. In today’s modern digitized classroom verbal communication between students and teachers is more than ever difficult to achieve; and even in high school it is difficult to reach that milestone of inspiring a good conversation among peers and even more to start engaging into questioning and moving towards the knowledge process.

A question that plays a role in verbal communication is who would be preferable to be the center of interest. Amongst 100 interactive platforms, students have to be the ultimate focus of a teacher-initiated or teacher-driven discussion. Their deeds, wrong or right, their thoughts and feelings, their likes and dislikes should inform teachers' interest and guide the conversation towards important and mutually interesting or concerning topics.

Effective word choices provide the tone of communication for any type of group in the classroom. Spoken words may or may not propel multiple effects and reactions.

High-schoolers spend a lot of time thinking of who they want to be or what they want to be when they grow up and they even sometimes stress over upcoming decisions like college.

This naturally pushes them toward a lot of concerns with the “I”. This is a huge factor on why it's necessary to encourage empathy amongst high school students.

Yet, empathy, which focuses on understanding others' condition and state of being without necessarily responding verbally, is an alternative way to deal with conflict. Although such a suggestion may seem controversial and fuzzy, it is critically important to practice building empathy and non-responsive listening, active listening.

Nowadays, classmates face uncertainty in their daily work, being alert to the constant changes of life. Emphasizing the fact that everyone is human, who has needs, desires and concerns, is a good starting point and a classroom is the right place to start. Yet, shortly after, compassion should take an accurate view of what people of a class actually need and discover ways to help them get past the struggle of sharing and communicating their thoughts and feelings clearly and effectively.

HAVE YOU SEEN WHAT I’VE SEEN? Se(a)food from West Africa

There is very little I remember from my time in Sierra Leone. Considering I lived there from the ages of 5 to 7 that's not surprising. But what I do remember is the way my fish would melt in my mouth or how the crabs tasted so amazing.

My family and I would go to the beach every weekend and by the coastline on the shore there would be a chain of restaurants where spectacular sea food was being prepared and served. For as long as I was swimming, enjoying the crispness of fresh salty water with my friends, our parents would order a dish of pure magic. And when we would get tired of exercise, we would go back and eat the delicious food that was on the table.

Restaurants would serve the crabs in their whole and we would break the legs with our hands using a strange-looking tool. The way the sauce would fill our mouths with the crab meat is such a unique taste for which there is no parallel. The fish were cooked with their traditional spices which gave them a unique flavour.

Shrimps were my favourite. It’s sweet, succulent, and incredibly versatile. It can be cooked almost any way and served hot or cold. Also, it’s readily available peeled and deveined, which helps lessen the “eww” factor. But I am sure it all came down to cooking it right.

A difference of one minute can take shrimp and scallops from delicious to rubbery, so cook carefully. Check for doneness early and often to prevent overcooking. Residual heat will finish the cooking, and you won’t be left with shrimp that can bounce high off the plate.

Finally, aquatic animals are a source of minerals such as calcium, iron and phosphorus as well as trace elements and vitamins. Marine species are particularly rich in iodine. The appeal of an otherwise tasteless diet is greatly improved, and much use is made of fish and shellfish as soups and condiments, especially when smoked or dried.

Whenever I look back at those trips, I get hungry and nostalgic. Sierra Leone has fed me well and it has filled my heart with great pleasure and my stomach with even greater food.

AUTOMOTIVE CULTURE Welcome to the weirdest race around

The 24 hours of LeMons, is considered to be one of the craziest, wackiest and weirdest endurance races in the world. But how weird is it really? Well, what do a Kim Jong Un themed car, a Nyan Cat car and a BMW/Mazda hybrid -yeah that’s two different cars in one- have in common? All these cars have participated at the 24 hours of LeMons, or at least tried before breaking down. The 24h of LeMons, the name of course is a parody of LeMans, has only one rule, the car must not exceed the value of $500. LeMons takes place in different race tracks in the US all year long.

What makes it what it is are the cars participating. Notable ones might include: The “Überbird” which looks like a Plymouth superbird, also known as the blue car from the Pixar movie “Cars”. Despite at least trying to look fast, I don’t think it can deceive anybody.

Another notable one is the “Arnold Schwarzenegger Experience” which is “all dedicated to Arnie’s great movies” as the owner said. It is based on a 1989 Honda CRX and wrapped with screenshots from Arnold’s different films. What makes the car exceptional is the spinning Arnold head on top of the car and speakers blasting his best quotes.

One of my favorites is the Nyan Cat car or the “NyanCar” mentioned before. For those blessed who do not know what the Nyan Cat is, it is an Internet video of a cartoon cat that has the body of a Pop Tart and farts rainbows while flying in space. While the car was racing, the very repetitive theme from the nyan cat video was playing from the speakers.

Did I mention that the race is 24 hours long? The drivers had to listen to the same, repetitive song for 24 hours straight.

Among all the joker and the amateurs, there are some people that actually take the race seriously and join LeMons to win. One of them is eyesore’s racing, hideous looking Miata, which is surprisingly one of the most successful cars in the tournament. The people behind the disgusting looking car are actually very knowledgeable when it comes to cars. There is a SpaceX engineer and a Mazda engineer who probably didn’t have anything better to do so they decided to join the team. The car is slightly faster than an ordinary car with engine output of 185HP. What is remarkable is how they achieved this power with such a small budget.

WHY PICK A HISTORY MAJOR? TO BECOME AN ART CRIME INVESTIGATOR OF COURSE!

People often confuse the work of a historian with that of an archaeologist. A historian’s work involves investigating and analysing data in written form from stone engravings to books and letters in order to validate information alleged to be facts. Sadly, there is an acute shortage of people choosing to study history. This is probably the result of the misguided assumption that it leads nowhere career-wise. Nothing could be further from the truth, though.

To study history is to study change: historians are experts in examining and interpreting human identities and transformations of societies and civilizations over time. They use a range of methods and analytical tools to answer questions about the past and to reconstruct the diversity of past human experience: how profoundly people have differed in their ideas, institutions, and cultural practices; how widely their experiences have varied by time and place, and the ways they have struggled while inhabiting a shared world.

Because history gives us the tools to analyze and explain problems in the past, it positions us to see patterns that might otherwise be invisible in the present – thus providing a crucial perspective for understanding (and solving!) current and future problems.

Teaching is not the only feasible option to history graduates as becoming an art crime investigator with the police is one of the coolest career paths available too! The job involves conscientious research to track down artifacts stolen from heritage sites, galleries,

museums and churches, which are particularly vulnerable and cannot always safeguard, protect and preserve their treasures. The loot is usually smuggled abroad with the sole intent of being sold to the highest bidder. A collection of sculptures, once constituting a single entity, may be shamefully fragmented and just scattered across the globe, so art crime squads in different countries constantly exchange information on illicit trafficking in the ‘black market’. Heritage institutions hire security to protect collections and also hire art detectives to make safety recommendations as a precaution guarding against art theft.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation created a special art crime team in 2004 to answer the challenge of art theft. The exclusive team numbers just over a dozen detectives. The FBI's Art Theft program coordinates an Art Crime Team consisting of 14 special agents and 3 prosecuting attorneys. The team's members receive specialized training in art and cultural property investigations and assist in art-related investigations worldwide. These roles require an inquisitive nature, an interest in research, a high level of physical fitness, and investigative skill. Art crime investigators can also expect significant job variety, travel, and excellent benefits.

Furthermore, private art detectives work under special contracts with insurance companies and museums to investigate art theft. Independent art detectives belong to professional organizations, including the Museum Security Network, to network with museums, art dealers and private collectors to hunt down stolen art works. International registries provide images and details of missing work to assist in tracking stolen art work.

Private art detectives subscribe to the free and paid networks in their work.

All in all, retrieving stolen art is a long, drawn-out process. The work is painstaking and not always rewarding. In many cases, the thieves try to destroy the evidence before investigators get to confiscate it, often causing irreversible damage to precious works of art. But picking a history major is a viable option for the young adults of today and a rather intriguing and interesting one too!

RECIPE

West African Shrimps

Ingredients ●

3 garlic cloves, minced

●

1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger root

●

1 tablespoon olive oil

●

1 can petite diced tomatoes, drained

●

1 can coconut milk

●

2 tablespoons tomato paste

●

1/2 teaspoon salt

●

2 teaspoons cornstarch

●

1 tablespoon cold water

●

1 pound uncooked shrimps, peeled and deveined

●

Hot cooked rice

●

Minced fresh cilantro, optional

Preparation Prep time: 0:10 minutes

1. Place garlic, ginger and oil in a large skillet. Cook and stir over medium-low heat for 5-7 minutes or until fragrant.

Add tomatoes, coconut milk, tomato paste and salt; bring to a boil.

2. In a small bowl, mix cornstarch and water until smooth; stir into tomato mixture.

Bring to a boil, stirring constantly; cook and stir 1-2 minutes or until thickened.

Cook time: 0:30 minutes Serves: 4 people

3. Add shrimps. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered for 4-6 minutes or until they turn pink.

4. Serve with rice and, if desired, cilantro.
