EDITOR’S NOTE Dear readers, Welcome to the very first digital edition of Pineword! We are excited to share with you the Fall edition of 2020-21 of our Journalism Club’s magazine. Right now, our after-school activity is operating remotely as we have been using online tools to communicate, research and write. Okay, to chat, laugh about fun facts and despair in front of the blank Google document. The writing life is messy, and there is no secret to success. Instead, there are many paths leading to where you want to go. So, here we are, offering to you a look at their twists and turns through six articles and other interesting bits of information for the humanities- and- stem-minded alike. We aim for our work to be more thoughtful, better crafted. We want to reach beyond the metaphors that have become too familiar to us, too easy; and thus sentimentalized and limiting. If this sounds vague, that is because it is. Yet sometimes uncertainty itself beckons. We need to honor the summons, or risk being untrue to ourselves, which is hardly the message we want to put across. This edition includes a visual tribute to the 70s years of Pinewood Schools. We asked members of our faculty and staff, to share with us one word that describes what Pinewood is for them. Here is what we received:

Throughout its 70-year history, Pinewood has maintained the character of an inclusive school in a close-knit community of students and teachers. THE TOP 3 FASHION TRENDS FOR AUTUMN/WINTER 2020-2021 by K alypso Isaidou Although fashion in 2020 side-tracked during the popular sweatpants and hoodie ear of quarantine, it is taking a turn for the better and ending on a high note. This new season of Autumn/Winter fashion is going back in time to some old classics, hitting new matrix motifs and in high supply of warm, supple tones. 1) Lavished leather Leather coats and trousers are coming in strong this season, whether it is everyday fashion or runway rage, they have come for good. Faux leather is of course the dominant idea, considering a new dawn of cruelty-free and sustainable clothing has come upon us, and creating at the same time the confident and assertive power of ‘matrix feels’. Matrix, although a reference to the movie series, is defined as a strong aesthetic that uses dark tones and textures to create a thrilling and adventurous look. Leather jackets are vital for this season in warm browns and dark black tones to enforce a new and powerful line of people. 2) Capricious cardigan Cardigans have always been a favourite when it comes to autumn and winter evenings and the thing you need most is a cosy, soft layer to warm up to. This season cardigans that stand out are stacked on all the racks, especially the patterned and colourful ones. Patterns can include the popular animal prints or argyle (known as a diamond-shaped trend), in a variety of bright colours. Skirts, blazers, trousers and overcoats are very trendy right now in the pattern known as plaid and gingham, which are geometrical and straight-up patterns. They resemble authentic office wear and help create a level of class in an otherwise modern era.

3) Gender fluid mix-and-match It is the twenty-first century and although gender acceptance is not that well-thought of politically, in everyday fashion, we as people are able to make our stand. Gender fluid clothes refer to etiher unisex options or mixing and matching clothes regardless of whom they are marketed for. For girls, button down shirts, suit-tailored trousers, sweater vests and blazers are the classy idea of ‘borrowing from the boys’. For boys, the idea is the same, but the statement is made with traditionally ‘girly’ blouses or bobbles. Keep in mind that colours can either be playful or neutral, but seeing as it is autumn/winter it is better to go for cream, maroon and brown shades. Nonetheless, there are many shades making a bold comeback. Apart from the polychromatic styled tie-dye and monochromatic all-black looks, colours such as red and gold are becoming more eye-catching and ready this fall. What about shoes? Everyone of course has their favourite pair of shoes, but that is no reason to limit yourself to that pair. There are many new options to choose from. Combat boots and welly boots are both effective as of this season to help make a stand even in the rainiest of weather. In addition, the all traditional and classy loafers are becoming more popular both as low and platform shoes. Shoe colours popularised by high end brands include neutral colours like white and tan, and brighter colours in shades of green and blue. With all this said, fashion can be whatever you feel it should be. Do not limit yourself to what other people think or do. Do it for yourself. TRAVELLING DURING COVID19 IS IT REALLY POSSIBLE?
by Alexandra Diamantopoulou For months now most of us have been wondering whether it is really possible to travel for work or pleasure during this pandemic. Well, even in countries where case numbers remain low or at least in manageable numbers, it is still a question worth considering before clicking the checkout button in the booking site. With the outbreak of the Covid19 all around the world, travelling became difficult, and at times even impossible, and lots of people found out that they had to cancel or postpone their plans. Airline companies got a huge hit in their budgets and customer offices saw an influx in messages in communication platforms either to request refunds or process rebookings. Undoubtedly, travelling increases your chances of getting and spreading Covid19, even if you feel healthy or are asymptomatic. So, the rule of thumb goes as such: do not travel unless it is really necessary. Staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others from getting sick.

So what can be done? In cases where work or family reasons necessitate you to take a plane, train, ship or coach, it is best to take all precautions and be respectful to the health and safety of others. Before you travel, consider the following: Is Covid19 spreading at your destination? The more cases at your destination, the more likely you are to get infected and spread the virus to others when you return. Does your destination have requirements or restrictions for travellers? Check with a travel agency or the ministry of health before you purchase a ticket. Most countries have set up offices related to Covid19 restrictions and measures of prevention. These are in English and supported by visuals to exemplify the steps of action for prospective travelers. In Greece, if someone arrives in the country is required to self-quarantine for a number of days before interacting with others or returning to work. During your travel: 1.
Always wear a mask that covers your face and nose. This includes passengers and members of staff on public transport. 2. Keep your social distance (6 feet apart) and avoid close contact with others, particularly people who are not from your household. 3. Wash your hands diligently and frequently, or use hand sanitizer. 4. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Finally, before you book your much-anticipated ticket, you may want to check the companies’ websites to see what they are doing to protect customers from Covid19. You should find out whether they require staff and customers to wear a mask, they promote social distancing, they use online or contactless reservations, check-in and payments, they have enhanced cleaning and disinfection procedures in place. Be safe, respectful and careful so that you enjoy your travelling experience without risking the safety of yourself and people around you. TESLA MOTORS WHAT YOU DO NOT KNOW, BUT SHOULD KNOW
by Ares Andreasyan In the era of supersonic speeds and advanced technologies, driving a car is more of an experience than a necessity. In that respect, issues related to environmental protection and careful attitude to the use of natural resources ceased to be simply ‘buzzwords’ used to keep up a conversation. They have become government policy issues. And this is why the idea for an electric car was born; a vehicle driven by an electric motor instead of an internal combustion engine, which has no gearbox, due to the attachment of a shaft directly to the wheels. Its advantage is that it does not use combustible mixtures, and thus causes no harmful emissions into the atmosphere and the explosiveness considerably reduces. The energy it consumes is definitely cheaper than gasoline and diesel fuel. The batteries can be charged during the slope movement in recovery mode or from sunlight. Also, easy assembly and simple design provide reliability and the service life of an electric vehicle, expand service interval mileage, resulting in significant cost savings. Low noise level assures comfort as well. Tesla Motors, founded in 2003, is rightfully considered to be one of the leaders in production of electric vehicles, as evidenced by the report data for the first half of 2015, published by EV Sales. The company gained global recognition and prestige thanks to its competent innovation policy. But what is the secret of their success? 1) In-house design and manufacture They design and produce their own operational software and main units for the assembly (battery pack, cooling systems, engine, electronics, charger, etc.) in-house.

2) No dealers They have refused to carry out their sales using dealer services. 3) New technology and openness They implement advanced technologies both in the production process (90% automation) and the driving process (management and control of all key functions via software); and they have opened the patent portfolio for public use. Tesla Motors has unveiled its latest concept electric vehicle, the Cybertruck. Revealed at a post-L.A. Auto Show event at Tesla’s design center just south of L.A. in Hawthorne, California on November 21, the angularly styled pickup truck purportedly will use stainless-steel unibody construction, an adaptable air suspension and offer both RWD and multi-motor AWD versions. According to Tesla, the first (RWD) versions will come to market at the end of 2021 with a base price (before EV incentives) of $39,900. The new Cybertruck will feature a unibody construction with a tall sail panel, using what Tesla labels “ultra-hard 30X cold-rolled stainless-steel.” Tesla claims the material will help eliminate dents and long-term corrosion, and is the same material used in the SpaceX Starship rocket. The bed (what Tesla labels the “vault'') is 6.5 ft. (1,981 mm) in length and features a deployable tonneau cover, part of the claimed 100 ft2 (2.83 m2) of lockable storage when combined with the front trunk and space in the sail panels. The sparse interior featured a 17-in. touchscreen in a landscape configuration, and Tesla claims some impressive off-road ability with up to 16 in. (406 mm) of ground clearance and approach/departure angles of 35°/28°. The Cybertruck will be offered in three variants: single-motor RWD; dual-motor AWD and tri-motor AWD. No battery capacities were discussed, but Tesla claims the base RWD model will provide a 250-mile (402 km) range, a 0-60 mph (0-97 km/h) time of less than 6.5 sec. and 7,500 lbs. (3402 kg) of towing capacity. The production of the multi-motor models is not expected until late 2022. The work they do proves that no compromises to a desirable aesthetic style and world-class driving experience are necessary in order to be energy efficient. THE BEAUTY OF POETRY AND WHY WE SHOULD WRITE MORE
by Josephine De Cataldo I once read a quote that went something along the line of “The best thing a writer is good at, is not writing.” Being one, this resonated deeply with me. Words have the power to transform us. Words can spark wars, revolutions and unrest, but words can create beauty in everything, literature and art. Most important, words have the ability to let us dream. Poetry is written so that the writer and the reader can ‘taste life twice.’ In poetry, there is no right or wrong; there is only to be human, and being human is to make mistakes, love, hate, it's to be happy and sad. Poetry is an art created from human imperfection. This is why, in my opinion it speaks a universal language. Sometimes sitting down and wring what is rising from deep inside your chest is the hardest job. Because words are so powerful, it takes a great amount of courage to sit down and put it on paper. Writers write what is important, and sometimes even if writing heals wounds, the process is like stabbing the wound again. We find the words that create the pain and then we ‘bleed it out’ on paper. A writer's poem is who they are, and this is what makes us vulnerable to the world, because once a poem is created, that poem belongs to everyone. It's as if wounds that make us all human are put on display for the whole world to see. We live in a society where showing any kind of emotion is looked down upon as vulnerability.

We live in a society where lies have become the new normal in communication, oftentimes employed just to escape a situation. And this is why poetry can be very dangerous; poems tell the truth, they open people's eyes and let them think for themselves. In other words, poetry reminds people of being alive and not just living, and the world needs more people to come alive. It tells us to enjoy the sweet and simple pleasures of just being on this Earth and celebrating the gift of being here. Go make yourself that cup of coffee, go to the park, try drawing. Poetry reminds us all that we have a whole buffet in front of us so don't get stuck looking at the appetizers. Do what makes you happy, because once you do, you will realize that there will never be enough time. That's the beauty about life, we have all the time in the world, until we do not anymore. We have walked alongside death since the first day of our first breath, but death does not seem so scary if you have lived a fulfilling life. Poetry does not give you the tools to live a better life; it simply points out to the things you try so hard to avoid and escape.

The idea of poetry is the idea of being human. Humans are who we are, and yet being human is sometimes looked down on. We love and we hate, we make mistakes, we laugh, we cry, we get mad, we mess up, we are human. All of these things are bound to happen to us, and this is why we need courage, because it takes courage to bring words to life. Poems and stories stay, even after we die, the words we decided to put on a page stay, this is why we must write, because in this way, we become infinite. THE WORLD OF BASKETBALL SEASON UPDATES
by Robert Andreasyan The list of NBA players with coronavirus is on the rise with Nets’ Michael Beasley the newest entry on the list, having tested positive for COVID-19. The league divided the 2019-20 season restart into six different phases. The 2nd phase was dedicated to the Coronavirus tests for the NBA players giving them enough time to recover before the travel plan (July 7-9), if someone tested positive i.e. 16 players were tested positive from a total of 302. Furthermore, 9 players were tested positive for COVID-19 among the 344 total players between June 24 and June 29. The NBA has allowed players to make their test results public but also in favor of the players who do not want to make the test results public. The list is not a long one, but with 2 players having tested positive in the NBA Bubble, there are concerns of an outbreak within the bubble. Hopefully, players can maintain all the protocols and ensure that no breach happens, due to ignorance or otherwise. The NBA announced that two players have tested positive among 322 players in the first round of Coronavirus testing within the NBA Bubble facility. The players have been sent to the isolation facility and will join the league once they have completely recovered.

Sacramento Kings small forward Harrison Barnes is the latest development in the list of positive coronavirus cases. The 2015 NBA champion in the 2019-20 season is averaging 14.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game. Nets’ Michael Beasley has tested positive for the Coronavirus from inside the bubble and will be leaving the facility as soon as possible. COVID-19 cases are slowly but surely increasing amongst the players and it will be interesting to see if Adam Silver and co. are able to pull off the NBA Bubble restart without any hiccups. ONLY THE LOVERS SING MUSIC’S TRANSFORMATIVE POWER
by The Editor Why is it that music can permeate our deepest memories, help us grieve and cheer? From the moment we understood its transformative power, music has led us to new avenues of scientific and amateurish exploration and experimentation. We began questioning its power to transcend our thoughts and excite our feelings and imagination, pushing its boundaries on cognitive, emotional and physiological terms. As Morley, a versatile performing artist, said in her 2015 interview with Design Matters ‘music is the sound wave of the soul’. But how is that so? Music seems to transform each thought we make into an emotion and vice versa. With or without words, in tempos we can dance to or have to stand still so that we can contemplate, each tone composed regardless of genre speaks to our hearts. And when we love, when we are in love or falling out of it, this experience is intrinsically articulated and oftentimes just magnified. We sing like only the lovers sing; we sing and the vibrations tickle our brain cells irrevocably. Aldous Huxley (26 July 1894 - 22 November 1963) on why music moves us so much In a magnificent essay title ‘The Rest is Silence’, which inspired the title of Alex Ross’s modern masterwork The Rest is Noise, Huxley writes: “From pure sensation to the intuition of beauty, from pleasure and pain to love and the mystical ecstasy and death -all the things

that are fundamental, all the things that, to the human spirit, are most profoundly significant, can only be experienced, not expressed. The rest is always and everywhere silence. After silence that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music. [...] Music ‘says’ things about the world, but in specifically musical terms. Any attempt to reproduce these musical statements ‘in our own words’ is necessarily doomed to failure. We cannot isolate the truth contained in a piece of music; for it is a beauty-truth and inseparable from its partner. RECIPE
Ingredients ●
2 cups (240g) all-purpose flour
●
3/4 cup (64g) unsweetened cocoa powder
●
1 & 1/4 teaspoons baking soda
●
3/4 teaspoon salt
●
3/4 cup (170g) unsalted butter, softened
●
1 & 3/4 cups (350g) packed light brown sugar
●
2 large eggs
●
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
●
1 & 1/3 cups water
●
Confectioners' sugar, for dusting
Preparation
1.
Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Butter a 9-inch round (2 inches deep) cake pan. Dust with flour and knock out the excess.
2.
Whisk together the flour, cocoa, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
3.
Using an electric mixer on medium speed, beat the butter and brown sugar. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla.
4.
Add the flour mixture to butter mixture in batches, alternating with water. Begin and end with flour. Mix just until combined.
5.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Bake 55-60 minutes, until the cake is springy to the touch and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
6.
Cool in the pan for an hour. Then invert onto a wire rack, then onto a serving plate. Dust with confectioners' sugar before serving.

A POEM WE WROTE FOR YOU She loved him, every inch, every moment of him, she loved him. With every step he moved on, she was with him, right there, and she would be for eternity.
