SCRIPTURE NOTES Acts 2:14a, 36–41 Last week we read from Acts a portion of Peter’s Pentecost sermon in which he proclaims the resurrection of Christ. This week we hear the crowd’s response to that sermon.

Psalm 116:1–4, 12–19 Appropriate to the themes of Eastertide, Psalm 116 is a prayer of thanksgiving to God for delivering the psalmist from the threat of death.

1 Peter 1:17–23 Throughout Eastertide this year, we are reading from 1 Peter, which was written to comfort Christians who were experiencing severe economic and social ostracism because of their faith. In today’s passage, the author encourages the readers, in the face of their suffering, to maintain a level of moral and ethical behavior appropriate to the purification they experienced in Christ.

John 21:1–19 Last week’s Gospel reading was John’s version of the risen Jesus appearing to the disciples in Jerusalem on the evening of Easter. Today we read of a later appearance by the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus calls Peter to his post-resurrection ministry.

SERMON SERIES F OR EA STERTIDE

This Sunday Dr. Sullivan will begin a series of sermons, The Apostles: Servants for the 21st Century. This series will explore some of the lives of the Apostles, those whom Jesus sent to share the Easter message with the world. What does scripture and tradition tell us about them? How do their lives model for us a 21st century Christianity?

DOWNTOWN DAILY BREAD

We continue to have staff in the building to deliver mail and hand out blankets, clothing, personal items, and snacks. We are serving a hot, bagged lunch every day from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. More than 100 homeless individuals are taking advantage of these services. All field outreach has ceased, and other shelters are not admitting new guests. The City and County have placed portable sinks and portable toilets in several downtown parks. The ALC and AA have suspended all classes and meetings until further notice.

BIBLE STUDY ON T HE G OSPEL OF M ATTHEW

Each Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. through May 20, we offer on-line, via Zoom, a Bible study on the Gospel of Matthew. Our teacher is New Testament scholar, Dr. Meg Ramey.
