Kerygma to Begin with Great Movie All Are Invited!

Kerygma Bible Study, The Bible in Depth, will begin its second year on Monday, September 19, at 6:00 p.m., with a light supper and the PBS movie, The Bible’s Buried Secrets. All members of the church are welcome to join the class for supper and stay for the movie. We’ll eat from 6:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and then view the movie which lasts about 2 hours. There will be a sign-up sheet at the Welcome Center for you to reserve your spot.

According to the PBS website, The Bible’s Buried Secrets utilizes the latest archaeological scholarship from the Holy Land to explore the beginnings of modern religion and the origin of the Hebrew Scriptures, our Old Testament. It’s like an archaeological detective story and engages some of the big questions in biblical studies: Where did the ancient Israelites come from? Who wrote the Bible, when and why?

The actual Kerygma classes begin the following Monday, September 26. As last year, there will be a morning class at 10:00 a.m., at the Synod of the Trinity, and an evening class at 6:00 p.m., at the church. If you were not in the class last year, but feel interested in joining, you can jump in with us. Give Pastor Sullivan a call, and he will obtain a resource book for you. Last year was outstanding, and we are all looking forward to continuing another round of Kerygma!

Classes, a Picnic, and a Remembrance Sunday, September 11 We begin our new program year on Sunday, September 11, with a return to our usual schedule of worship at 8:30 and 11:00 a.m., and classes for children, youth, and adults at 9:40 a.m. Following our 11:00 a.m. worship service, there will be a picnic in the Fellowship Hall, sponsored by our Congregational Life Team. A reservation sheet will be at the Welcome Center or e-mail your reservation to mkennedy@pinestreet.org. Because that Sunday is the 15 th anniversary of the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001, we will remember the fallen in words and music in worship that morning.

Make plans to be in worship, study, and fellowship that day!

Peacemaking Offering Sunday, October 2 September 3 through October 2, 2016, has been designated by the Presbyterian Church (USA) as the Season of Peace.

The Presbyterian Peacemaking Program and Pine Street's Peace Advocates are committed to pursuing a peaceful and just world. We invite you to work and pray for reconciliation and justice in the world and in our community.

The Season of Peace will culminate with our yearly Peacemaking Offering to be received on October 2, which is also World Communion Sunday. A new hymn written for the Season of Peace will be sung during our worship services that day. Pine Street has chosen the Teaching Peace Initiative, a new program for middle and high school students, to receive the local portion (25%) of this year's offering.

Directed by Dr. Joyce Davis, who is also the Director of Communications for the City of Harrisburg, the Teaching Peace Initiative helps develop non-violent conflict resolution skills among youth in our region and encourages them to set up a network of Peace Clubs in their schools. Resources are utilized from the World Affairs Council of Harrisburg and the United States Institute of Peace. Dr. Davis will speak at Bagels and Belief at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 4 in Fellowship Hall.

Already this dynamic new program has engaged youth at Harrisburg High School and Harrisburg Sci-Tech, as well as other high schools on the East and West Shores, including Cumberland Valley, Central Dauphin, Central Dauphin East, Harrisburg Academy, and Hershey. Resources are needed to expand the program and hire a part-time director.

Jesus calls us to be peacemakers. Every day we see our world and our community's need for Christ's reconciling love, peace, and justice. The promise of Jesus - "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God" - is both a comfort and a challenge. Please use the special Peacemaking Offering envelope to make a generous contribution to respond to this challenge.

The 222nd General Assembly Reflections from a Young Adult Advisory Delegate When the 222nd General Assembly met in Portland, OR, from June 16-21, I was the Young Adult Advisory Delegate (YAAD) of the Presbytery of Carlisle. Here are some of my reflections.

As we enter a time where the future of both the Presbyterian Church and America is uncertain, the question of why more and more young people are leaving the Presbyterian Church lingered in my mind. Upon arrival, I immediately entered into a world of a disappointing, eye opening, and hopeful debate. Not knowing what to expect in the committee meetings, I was disoriented after two motions were swiftly passed. The third issue, however, was more serious, and involved changing Synod boundaries. Members of Korean-Presbyterian communities were in conflict with members from Western United States communities over whether it would be beneficial to change the boundaries or leave them the same. I could relate to the Korean communities as they described an experience in which diverging cultures reduced church involvement. But I could also relate to the Western communities because changing Synod boundaries would not help their more recently established communities. In issues like this where you would expect compromise to be the obvious solution, I noticed a pattern in which each side got caught up in an increasingly emotional standpoint, eventually resulting in the issue being pushed to the next General Assembly for further speculation.

Regarding the Confession of Belhar, the General Assembly approved adding this confession to our Book of Confessions because of its strong position against racism. In other decisions such as voting for the moderator of this General Assembly, we felt uncertain about the outcome of the election of the moderator. Most of us YAADs had hoped for a different result. However, it reminds us of the fact that there is still a clear generational divide in thinking in the Presbyterian Church which has future consequences for the church.

In a conversation I had with a commissioner hailing from the Presbytery of Central Florida and originally Brazil, I outlined the fact that even though young members of a church community may not have as much voice in what happens in the church, the future of the church relies on younger generations actually participating in the life of the church, so, it would be in the best interests of those who are in power to make decisions with the interests of younger generations in mind. He then responded, saying, "We should talk more.”

Although not all issues were resolved - some being pushed to the future - there was a momentum of change and a sense of hope felt at the 222nd General Assembly. Whether this change will be seen in my generation or in generations to come, the future of our church relies on it.
