Join us on Friday, May 6 at 7:30 p.m. for an inspirational hymn festival led by Dr. John Ferguson.

Known for his many choral compositions and refreshing hymn interpretations, Dr. Ferguson is the American church musician, organist, teacher, and composer perhaps most associated with the term “Hymn Festival.” The festivals he designs and leads for diverse audiences throughout the country are ecumenical experiences drawing upon the treasures of Christian song from many centuries, traditions, and styles.

In June, 2012, he retired after 29 years as the Elliot & Klara Stockdahl Johnson professor of organ and church music at St. Olaf College in Minnesota, where he also conducted the St. Olaf Cantorei, and served as Cantor to the student congregation. He has more than 150 published titles to his credit and has appeared on several recordings.

A Beautiful Tapestry

Dr. John Ferguson, internationally acclaimed hymn leader

Ferguson, continued Ferguson earned a B.M. from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music; an M.M. from Kent State University; and a D.M.A. from the Eastman School of Music. He has been invited as a visiting professor by the faculties of the University of Notre Dame and the Yale Institute of Sacred Music in addition to serving as a church musician for 59 years. His work has received national acclaim with accolades from organizations including the American Choral Directors Association and the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians.

Thanks to the women of Pine Street who helped create this beautiful tapestry to serve as both a cover to the organ console and a table cloth for the transept chapel communion table.

The “star” borders are called Star of Bethlehem, and the simpler part is just a piece of the full Star of Bethlehem repeat.

Star of Bethlehem is in the family of weave structures known as overshot – a pattern on top of a plain weave background. Overshot was one of the commonly used structures (there are hundreds if not thousands of variations) in the late 18th to mid-19th centuries to weave coverlets.

This is actually “turned” overshot, in that the pattern (purple) threads and the tabby (blue) threads are both in the warp. This allowed the ladies to use one shuttle (blue only), instead of two shuttles (blue and purple) alternating each other. Traditionally, the warp would be one color, and the weft two (or more) colors.

Chalice & Tapestry

A New Communion Chalice Rachelle Lowe recently created a communion chalice that was dedicated during the 11 a.m. worship service on April 17. Rachelle has shared her thought process and creative journey. “After a brief time of imagining how I wanted to shape the chalice, I began to build it in porcelain.

Porcelain is white clay that allows glazes to fire to their truest and most vibrant colors. This was important because I had a sense that I wanted the design to echo the look of stained glass.

The vessel was constructed entirely by hand with the use of a potter’s wheel. Coils of clay were rolled, scored with a special toll, and joined to create the form. Once built, the chalice had to dry out completely before it was fired in the kiln. After the first firing, it was ready to be glazed.

Conceptualizing the surface design for the chalice was an intuitive process. I gathered ideas from visual imagery that appeared in my mind until my intuition told me which design to choose. I drew the chosen imagery on the surface, then hand-painted three coats of glaze in each section of the design.

The chalice was fired in the kiln a final time in what is called a glaze fire.�

The process of creating the chalice for the congregation was a pleasure and privilege for Rachelle, and she is grateful for the opportunity to share her art with Pine Street. Rachelle, the feelings are mutual, as Pine Street is likewise grateful for your talents and willingness to share.

‘Rise and Shine’ on the News

Rise and Shine!

A Friendly Neighborhood Breakfast for Downtown Daily Bread Volunteers from Pine Street and the Downtown Daily Bread (DDB) Advisory Board hosted a “Rise and Shine – Friendly Neighborhood Breakfast” in Fellowship Hall on Wednesday, April 6, from 7 to 8:30 a.m. Breakfast included a delicious variety of foods, including scrambled eggs, French toast casserole, fruit salad, bacon, ham, sausages, and bagels put together by Kristi Saul, Bob Kerr, and a dedicated band of warmhearted volunteers.

Starting at 5 a.m., Janel Knight, a reporter for “Daybreak” (the morning news program on ABC 27 WHTM) reported on the breakfast event preparations live from the Pine Street kitchen. Thanks to her coverage, we had people, who had never heard of DDB come from outside the downtown area to buy and pick up breakfasts. Over 40 people joined us for breakfast in Fellowship Hall or take out including State Senator Rob Teplitz. ABC 27 reported on the event again during its evening news program on Wednesday.

We received donations from State Representative Patty Kim and Deputy Secretary Hannah SmithBrubaker of the PA Department of Agriculture. Food for the breakfast was made possible via generous donations from Kristi Saul and URL Insurance Group, GIANT Food Stores, Panera Bread, Wegmans, Karns Foods, and other DDB volunteers. The event generated nearly $1,000 in donations to DDB. The event gave new life to the words of Isaiah 58:10-11: … “if you offer your food to the hungry and satisfy the needs of the afflicted, then your light shall rise in the darkness and your gloom be like the noonday.... and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters never fail.”

DDB Soup Showdown The Fall Fundraiser Downtown Daily Bread would like to invite you and your friends to a special night of celebration on Sunday, October 23, 2016, in honor of 33 years of feeding the hungry. The fall fundraiser, “Downtown Daily Bread Soup Showdown,” will take place at 5:30 p.m. at the Country Club of Harrisburg. It will be an evening featuring competing chefs, delicious appetizers, drinks, light dinner, silent auction, music, art, and more.

DDB would like to encourage members of Pine Street to join with members of the DDB Advisory Board and other special DDB friends and supporters to help make this event a success. The needs of the soup kitchen are many, and the services provided continue to grow. This fundraiser will help with the purchase of food for lunches served everyday of the week and with the Lunch Plus program.

Currently, the Board is looking for members to serve on the Sponsorship Committee, Advertising Committee, Invitation Committee, Host Committee, and Silent Auction Committee. We welcome your input and ideas.

I Will Lift My Eyes to the Hills Jewell Ridge Twenty five years ago a youth mission trip was organized by Bill Bauer to a church in an Appalachian community in Virginia. Rev. Richard (Dick) Stone and his wife, Kitty, were leading the Jewell Ridge Presbyterian Church in that small coal mining camp, and our Senior Highs and adult leaders spent a week there painting a house and interacting with the church members and others in the “camp” to form lasting friendships. Pine Street's relationship with this church has led to its members joining in mission with us to do work in Arizona, as well as bringing its youth missioners to do work at Pine Street and in the surrounding community. There are approximately 300 people in Jewell Ridge, and 50 or so of them are members of the church. Over the years many Pine Street youth and adult missioners have traveled to this

beautiful spot in the mountains of Virginia to work and play alongside our brothers and sisters in Christ.

This year we will be assisting the church in conducting its annual Vacation Bible School, the largest activity of its kind in the area. Over 60 children from toddlers to teens come from miles around to this experience at the Jewell Ridge church each summer to have fun learning about a biblical theme or story. We at Pine Street are asked to help its staff lead the program, which involves everything from attending worship, helping to decorate the church, running errands to purchase snacks and supplies, helping the leaders with the classes, socializing with the members of the community (which could involve some bluegrass music!), and experiencing the grace and charm of a close-knit, welcoming people.

All are invited to become part of this experience—young people, families, adults, church staff, etc. Any children who

come with their parents will be welcome to participate in the Bible school. We will be carpooling on Saturday, June 25th, and returning on Saturday, July 2nd. The group will contribute to a common fund to buy food for our meals which we can prepare in the church kitchen. Session Notes The Session held its regular stated meeting on March 29, 2016. The highlights are as follows: ▪ Pine Street’s budget is still running a slight surplus through the end of February. This is a result of savings in the areas of maintenance, utilities, and staff salary and benefits due to the open Christian Educator position. This positive budget situation is not expected to last through the spring.

▪ More information about future staffing will be forthcoming after the consultation later this month with John Wimberly.

▪ The Adult Learning Center’s new partnership with Tri-County OIC is going very well and has resulted in additional students attending, primarily though the addition of English as a Second Language program.

▪ The drain problem in Memorial Hall that has been the root cause of the periodic flooding and moisture problems has been fixed. New carpeting and repainting of the hall will be done over the next several months.

▪ Repairs were made to the air conditioning, fire panels, and elevator in the Boyd Building.

▪ At the request of Dr. Sullivan, Session extended an invitation to Rabbi Eric Cytryn of Temple Beth El to preach and teach on Sunday, June 19.

The next stated meeting of the Session will be on Tuesday, May 24 th.

Pine Street Women’s Book Club Come Read with Us! From time to time you may have seen a blurb in Pine Street's Sunday worship bulletin about a meeting of the Pine Street Women's Book Club. What fun these women have meeting monthly, September through May, to review a literary work, chat with published authors, socialize, and learn to know their fellow Pine Streeters.

The group gathers in each other’s homes to talk about books they have chosen in advance. The selections include the classics, popular fiction, nonfiction, and occasionally poetry. For the past few years, a book has been chosen whose author has reviewed it in person. (Not the least of these authors was Pine Street's own John Luciew). Members are encouraged to read each selection before it is reviewed, but that is just a recommendation, not a requirement, for attendance.

Would you enjoy meeting with others to discuss good literature and have a good time? The Pine Street Women's Book Club is open to all. Meetings are generally held on the second Sunday of the month at 7:00 p.m. Watch for the 2016-17 reading list on Pine Street's website and for monthly meeting notices in our worship bulletin.
