A Community Mission

After many years at Downtown Daily Bread, I still believe that hungry people have a right to food and that poor, homeless people should be helped. I see men and women who wait in line every morning to collect their mail, take a shower, or check their lockers. I see individuals line up each day for their daily lunch. I know that everyone who comes to Downtown Daily Bread will be treated with respect and kindness. I also know that there are always more ways to help those living in poverty and always more challenges to be met. Our latest accomplishment was opening the Drop-In Center for the Homeless in Harrisburg.
Downtown Daily Bread makes a difference in the lives of many. The folks who come to DDB are not just numbers; they are individuals with names and stories. We feel good knowing that a veteran can keep his apartment because of DDB help with his rent. We feel wonderful when an abused woman and her three children are safely housed. We feel proud when a client completes his GED and moves on to additional training.
For those who have returned their Financial Stewardship Commitment cards for 2015, thank you! If you have not done so, please do so as soon as possible!
As a team, we are thankful for the dedicated men and women who volunteer, and for all of our friends in the community who help finance DDB. We are also grateful for the human service agencies that collaborate with DDB to bring more services to our clients. DDB has been, and will continue to be, a community mission made up of people helping people.
Pope Francis on his recent visit articulated my thoughts beautifully when he prayed, “O God of the poor, help us to rescue the abandoned and forgotten of this earth…Teach us to discover the worth of each thing, to be filled with awe and contemplation, to recognize that we are profoundly united with every creature…Encourage us, we pray, in our struggle for justice, love, and peace.”
With the holidays approaching, I wish you all good health and happiness and I offer heartfelt thanks for your ongoing support.

of unemployment, the weariness of ill health, the pain of isolation - all these can make us feel very alone in the midst of the celebrating and spending. We need the space and time to acknowledge our sadness and concern; we need to know that we are not alone.
Our spirits sink as the days grow shorter. We feel the darkness growing deeper around us. We need encouragement to live the days ahead of us.
For these reasons the Deacons and Stephen Ministers offer a special Longest Night worship service, including the Lord’s Supper. Come out, and join with us in sharing and hearing prayers, scripture, and music that acknowledge that God’s presence is for those who mourn, for those who struggle - and that God’s Word comes to shine light into our darkness. Everyone is welcome. The service will be followed by a brief time for light refreshments and fellowship.
Extending God’s Love: Gleaning at Strite’s Orchard
On Saturday, October 24, 2015, Pine Street members and friends gleaned 700 pounds of apples at Strite’s Orchard. Apples were delivered to DDB and area food banks. The pickings were slim this year due to very cold weather and high winds that knocked down a lot of the potential apples the previous week, but it was a wonderful day of fellowship and exercise.

Extending God’s Love: Honoring Our Veterans

Extending God’s Love: Presbyterian Apartments
Pine Street’s Mission Team invites members and friends of Pine Street to extend God’s love to and with the residents of the Presbyterian Apartments on Friday, December 11, 2015, as we sing songs of the Christmas season and provide a potluck lunch. This is an annual event sponsored by the Mission Team - Extending God’s Love.
We will meet at 11:30am in the top floor penthouse of the Presbyterian Apartments at 322 N. Second Street, for a Christmas carol sing along with the residents, and then provide lunch and finish the event with a gift exchange. Presbyterian Apartments will provide the main meat dish and drinks. We are asking for you to bring a side dish or a dessert. Also bring a few unwrapped white elephant gifts for the residents.
This is a wonderful opportunity to be a part of the larger body of Christ. Sign up at the Welcome Center. If you have any questions, please contact Marty Gruver at 545-1204. Have a blessed Advent season.

If you would like to purchase a poinsettia that will be used for decorating the sanctuary for Christmas, please complete the form below. There will no longer be automatic renewals for ordering poinsettias.
The form can be either mailed or put in the box in the Gathering Place along with your check made payable to Pine Street Presbyterian Church (please specify in the memo that this is for poinsettias). The costs of the poinsettias are $8.00 each. Deadline for orders is December 13, 2015.
