Share the Harvest

Sometimes it is just fun to throw a party! It is even better to throw a party which will help others. This is what our fundraising event scheduled for Friday night, October 12 at Historic Harrisburg Association hopes to achieve. The fall is a time of “harvest and gathering” to prepare for the long winter ahead. Our fundraiser will help us do just that. With proceeds from sponsorships, ticket sales, and raffle, DDB will be able to buy food to feed clients through the winter. As food prices continue to climb and client numbers continue to grow, it is imperative that we look for creative ways to fundraise. Why not have fun at the same time?
The “Share the Harvest” event will be a time for the community to come together for a common goal: to feed the hungry. Our evening will feature delicious appetizers, wine and cheese pairings, musical entertainment, art displays, raffle prizes, and most importantly, good company. In addition, we are excited to partner with Historic Harrisburg Association, another important community organization. You will love being in their grand building, a former brownstone bank building with a rich history. The space will take you back to a kinder, gentler time where buildings were works of art made in marble, fine woods, and brass.

Pine Street To Host Stephen Ministry Workshop
Want to learn to care for people who are grieving and reach out to others in a distinctively Christian way? On Saturday, September 29, 2012, Pine Street will host a Stephen Ministry Workshop from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The half-day workshop is designed both to enhance participants’ caring skills and to help congregations explore ways to expand their caring ministry. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m., and refreshments will be served.

One reason we’re so excited about helping other congregations learn about Stephen Ministry is that it is making a significant difference in the life of our own congregation. Since we began Stephen Ministry in 2009, eight Stephen Ministers and 5 Stephen leaders have gone through 50 hours of training in order to provide quality oneto-one Christian care to hurting people. If you think you might be interested in being a Stephen Minister, attending the workshop is a great way to learn more.

Pine Street Choirs Begin Season

As the days finally begin to cool, it is a sure sign that the lazy days of summer vacation time are quickly coming to a close. Already children here in the city are back in school, and soon their suburban counterparts will follow. With the coming of Labor Day, we will all be back in the regular routine of the ‘rest of the year’.
This is also the time that the choirs begin their work again, and the glory of choral music is heard from the choir loft and chancel steps. And as we start the season, this is the perfect time to join a choir.
For adults and high school age youth, the Chancel Choir begins rehearsals on Thursday evening, September 6 at 7:30 p.m. The choir is open to all. If you are not sure of your voice part, we will be pleased to work with you privately for a short time and determine where you should be placed in the choir. We work each Thursday from 7:30 to 9:15. Parking is available in the South Street Garage for choir members, so you can be sure your car is safely parked under cover. Our season will feature many beautiful anthems sung each Sunday to illuminate
the scriptures of the day. In addition, the choir sings for the beautiful Lessons and Carols service each Christmas, and this year will perform the Fauré “Requiem” on the Feast of All Souls (November 2).
If you have thought it might be fun to sing in the choir, please give it a try. It does take a bit of time to get up to speed, but those who stick with it find it very much worth their while. If you’re not sure, speak to Tom Clark-Jones. He can give you the details and welcome you to the group. In spite of a demanding schedule, and challenging music, we find our times to party and have good times, and always time to support one another in the various happenings of our lives.
In addition to the adult choir, the children of the church participate in Children’s Choir through both Church School and KOALA programs. We encourage parents to bring their children to Church School a few minutes early (9:30 a.m.) to be present for choir rehearsal. We spend about 25 minutes together, and learn some anthems the children always enjoy singing. The same music is again presented at KOALA, to keep it fresh in
mind, and also to be able to have some fun music as well. Even though it can be difficult to get coordinated enough to get here for these rehearsals, it pays big dividends for the children who delight in the music, and remember the texts all their lives. Choir practice starts along with Church School on September 16.
So, whatever your age or ability level, as long as you can carry a tune, we can find a place for you in the choir. The children sing a fun tune called, “All God’s Critters Have A Place in the Choir” and we try to make that a reality here at Pine Street. Come, Sing!
has really filled my heart with joy. This is especially true for the youth who started with me on my first trip and have come back to serve year after year.
To work with the mentally handicapped is not a simple matter. As Howard Ambe said during our Adult Forum presentation, “It’s a lot more difficult than you think.” The difficulty is not that it’s back breaking labor or that you are worn out from working with crazy kids, but rather wrapping your mind around what it means to be an adult with the mental capacity of 1-2 year old. I know it might not sound like much to deal with, but let me give you an example of why it’s so difficult.
As many of you know, I have a 2 year old son at home and I love to be with him. I try to soak up every moment I can with him because I know he will only be this way for a short period of his life. There is both joy and sorrow in this. The joy is that he will grow into his own person with dreams, talents and aspirations. The sorrow is that time slips through our fingers so quickly and nothing ever stays the same. With the mentally handicapped, these ideas are turned upside down. These people will always be the same and the sorrow is that they will never grow into their own person with dreams, talents and aspirations.
Yet, when a person can come to grips with this reality, I think that they can find joy, where on the surface, none is to be found. This is certainly what happened to the youth on the trip. At the beginning of the week, many of the youth were discouraged by the circumstances of these people. However, by the end of the week, they were in a position to appreciate how much these people mean in God’s kingdom. For in truth, these people help us to understand what it means when Jesus says, “The last shall be first and the first shall be last.” In God’s kingdom, we are the ones to be pitied, for these people are first and we are last. Therefore, I do believe that every person who attended this trip came to an understanding of what an honor it is to serve and love the mentally handicapped, God’s chosen people.
This June we will complete the cycle of mission trips by doing our international mission trip. We will be travelling to Haiti and the excitement is already palpable. As usual, I anticipate another sleepless night the evening before we depart. However, one sleepless night is well worth the experience, as I anticipate that this trip will be even better than the last. In the coming months, I look forward to telling you more about what
Presbytery To Host Mission Lab
We want to grow. How do we do that? For a church to grow, regular church going people must become inspired, faith-sharing missional leaders. Impossible? Jesus started with a bunch of fishermen and a tax collector! It only takes a few people to spark spiritual renewal and growth. Mission Lab can help you become that spark.
What is Mission Lab? Mission Lab is an action-oriented course designed to equip, motivate and support you to reach out and share faith in word and deed, walk with people into a life of faith and inspire others to also reach out. Mission Lab is relational leader development.
Is Mission Lab for me? It’s for church members (and pastors!) who want to reach out, but need a way to begin or are already reaching out, but want more support and training. Mission Lab will address important questions, such as: Why initiate with people when we don’t even know whether they’re interested in God or our church? What are
Biblical models that can help us? How do I build relationships with people in my neighborhood? How do I blend witness through action and witness with words? How can I tell when people are open to God? What do I do next? How can we do this together as a ministry team or whole church? How do we do all this without becoming annoying Bible-thumpers?
Leaders Alison and Dan Siewert, Evangelists, Presbytery of Carlisle, draw on their 25 years of experience training leaders at churches, crossculturally and on college campuses.

we expect to experience in Haiti as the youth will be asking for your financial support to get there. In the meantime, may I say once more thank you for your support in helping to get us to Florida. It was an amazing trip and could not have happened without your support.
Teacher Recognition
Teacher recognition will take place on Sunday, September 16, 2012. During both services our teachers will be lifted up in prayer. We appreciate their ministry and would like to show it by giving each teacher a carnation to wear that Sunday morning. We would also like to invite all of you to join us in the Gathering Place after worship for refreshments and a time where you acknowledge and celebrate our teachers’ gifts.
Shepherds Needed
With a new member class starting September 16th, we are in need of church members willing to be shepherds. This is a very important part of the new member process. As a shepherd, you get the privilege of helping integrate the new members into the wonderful family at Pine Street. Please see Joanne Winger and let her know if you are interested. You will find yourself blessed by the experience.
Rally Day On 3rd Street
Don’t forget to join us as we kick off the new program year at Rally Day on Sunday, September 9. Eleven O’clock worship will be held outdoors on Third Street, in God’s glorious creation.
