The music search Committee is proud to present mr. Brett Terry as Pine street’s newly selected minister of music and Worship.
last august the music search Committee was formed to choose a successor for Thomas Clark-Jones upon his retirement. once advertised, the position at Pine street attracted over 60 applicants from around the usa, and a few from abroad. Between august and December, the committee reviewed applications and eventually selected 11 candidates as semi-finalists. In December the committee conducted online interviews with these applicants, and narrowed the field to five finalists, one of whom withdrew during the process. on-site interviews were conducted with the “final four” during February, during which the candidates rehearsed the
choir, met the staff, demonstrated their skills on the organ and piano, toured the Harrisburg area, and met with the search committee.
The committee’s goal was to identify the candidate who exhibited the best combination of musicianship, leadership, collegiality, personality, and a sense of music as a ministry, vital to the church and to our wider community. We were fortunate to have four outstanding candidates, and ultimately made Brett Terry our first choice. upon being offered the position, Brett accepted quickly and with enthusiasm.
Brett is coming to Pine street from the scarsdale uCC Congregational Church in the NYC metro area, where he serves as music Director and organist. He is originally

as I read this month’s “The Presbyterian outlook” magazine, I came across an article by lauren Wheeler scharstein who is an associate pastor for youth and families. In her article she talks about how students in this day and time are hyper-connected through all their activities and social media. The question she posed to them is what was their most meaningful experience in worship? The overwhelming response was during the time of silent prayer.
Organist Mark Laubach Returns to Pine Street

In June 2011, Mark Laubach was a featured organist at the regional american Guild of organists convention in Harrisburg. The “standing room only” audience rose to applaud him loudly and long for a stellar performance. mark is organist and choirmaster of st. stephen’s episcopal Church in Wilkes-Barre, Pa, adjunct instructor of organ and church music at marywood university in scranton, and honorary Canon Precentor of the Diocese of Bethlehem, Pa. He is known and respected throughout the united states and europe as a gifted recitalist. mr. laubach has recorded three compact discs on the Pro organo label. The concert is sponsored by the Harrisburg Chapter, american Guild of organists and music at Pine street. Mission Opportunity at the 5 Senses Garden

When: saturday, april 25 from 9:00am until 12:00 or 1:00pm rain or shine!!!
What :Volunteering at the 5 senses Garden along the Harrisburg Green Belt.
We could be doing many things: replacing landscaping boards that line the garden beds, edging garden beds, placing wood chips onto the garden beds, fertilizing the garden beds, weeding, etc. lunch will be provided at the garden. all volunteers are also invited to dinner at Fort Hunter park area.
Why: For the last few years, PsPC has volunteered with the rebuilding Together National event Day the last saturday of april. last year and this year there was no home that
we could work on, the homes required work that volunteers from Pine street wouldn’t be able to do or had such minimal needs that it wouldn’t be much of a work day. so this year we are again volunteering with the Garden, through rebuilding Together.
Who: anyone who wants to enjoy the morning with others who will be volunteering.
Also: Wear old shoes that can get dirty!!! If you have ‘favorite’ garden tools, bring them, and gardening gloves.

from the midwest and graduated summa cum laude from the university of missouri’s Kansas City music Conservatory, holding undergraduate degrees in organ and vocal performance. He then went on to study at Yale university, graduating with the master of music degree in organ performance as well as the Certificate in Church music studies (a combined study of music and theology).
Brett’s teachers include well-respected figures such as Vinson Cole, Thomas Troeger, and Thomas murray. Brett has served as the music director for marquand Chapel at Yale, home of the Institute of sacred music and the Yale Divinity school’s daily chapel service. He has led numerous concert series and a professional choir in NYC. He teaches voice, piano and organ, coaches, and has performed in a wide range of secular venues including Broadway and with the metropolitan opera orchestra, as well as elsewhere in the united states and abroad.
Brett hopes to live in the City of Harrisburg.
He will officially begin his ministry at Pine street as of June 1, 2015, but will start “moving in” during the month of may.
We are indebted to many people who enabled us to guide this search effectively. let me offer special and extended thanks to Ellen Hunt and members of the Chancel Choir, who put in many extra hours of preparation and rehearsal time as part of the interview process. I hope they enjoyed it as much as we did. equally heartfelt thanks to Betty Rader, who gave each candidate a personal customized tour of the Harrisburg area.

Youth

The fact that students responded that silent prayer was their most meaningful experience in worship says to me that students are craving a connection with God. as a Christian educator my job is to guide the youth and the youth leaders in finding this connection. some of the ways we are doing this are evident in programs we have in place.
The youth meet on sunday mornings for an hour and a half for their youth fellowship time with youth leaders John and Leslie Luciew, Mike Brittain, and intern Christopher Cartwright. Throughout the winter they have stayed on the premises, playing in the gym, spending time together, studying together, and praying together. as the weather gets warmer they will start to go out from the church doing field trips.
This past fall the youth attended a two day retreat at Camp Hebron with a focus on prayer. students learned about prayer through Bible study, guided meditations, and walking the labyrinth.
Currently we have two students in our youth confirmation class. Heather sigler has led them each week in learning about Presbyterianism and preparing them to make a decision about becoming part of our church community.
We have begun preparing for Youth sunday worship which will take place on April 26 students will write the sermon, the prayers, choose the music, and lead the children’s sermon. They will do all aspects of the service except the institution of the lord’s supper. Preparation is not just about preparing but about the fellowship and learning that takes place as we prepare.
another major event for our middle school and high school students is the youth mission trip. This year we are planning a trip to syracuse N.Y. (more information about this trip is in Marah Dormuth’s article on p.6.) as with any mission trip, as you work, you are building relationships. Those relationships build disciples who then can go forth in the world to share the gospel of Jesus Christ.
all of these programs provide opportunities for us to connect with God, whether we are writing a sermon, praying together, or digging in the dirt. our youth have the opportunity to seek and connect with God!
ALC 5K to Educate Needs YOU

last october Pine street opened the adult learning Center, commonly referred to as the alC. This is the newest community outreach mission program to serve members of the greater Harrisburg area. Church members are involved in helping instruct students who are hoping to get their GeD certificates. english, math, and computer skills are taught to adults who have not graduated from high school. a GeD will help them be eligible for a better job.
The alC receives financial support from grants, individuals and in-kind contributions including space in the Boyd building and utilities. These funding sources paid for start-up costs and partially support ongoing expenses. To raise additional money for alC requirements a fund raising event is being organized by Jose Sastre: a walk/run on City Island on the morning of Saturday, May 30. The event is being called the ALC 5K to Educate. In addition to Jose several Pine streeters are involved in the planning – Chris Ewing, Sue Black, Steve McMullen, Debbie Olson and Joan Hays.
The walk/run will be one lap around City Island, over the walking bridge with a loop along riverfront Park then back across the walking bridge finishing on the island.
Volunteers are needed to assist with preparation for and activities on race Day. every volunteer who signs-up before May 1 will receive a race day t-shirt. Here are some things that volunteers may do before race day:
• Advertise the race to family, friends and co-workers. Hand out or post brochures in the work place so others will know about the race. Race brochures are available at the Welcome Center
• Stuff the goodie bags each preregistered participant will receive
• Procure promotional give-aways for the goodie bags. Perhaps your company has things that could be given for this purpose, like key chains, kitchen magnets, etc.
• Contact a business to donate or make a personal financial contribution to purchase fruit and/ or bottled water for the entrants. Sponsorship brochures are available at the Welcome Center on the day of the race, volunteers are needed to
• Assist with registration
• Hand out goodie bags and t-shirts
• Hold signs at race turns and encourage the entrants
• Hand out cups of water at the half-way point
• Pass out fruit and bottled water at the end of the race
• Assist with clean-up when the race is over and of course you, your family, friends and pets are needed to walk or run.

Pine Street Youth to Spread God’s
Love in Syracuse, NY

our goal of following Jesus’s teachings continues as the Pine street Youth Fellowship Group has been invited by former Pine street member, Reverend Lorrie Cooney, to join her in completing a mission at her church in syracuse, New York, this June.
on our mission trip, we will engage in cleanup work and general work within reverend Cooney’s Church community. With the efforts put forth, we are showing our talents and the power that God has given us by spreading the word of God and his love. We are very excited to be a part of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of supporting fellow Christians in their church community. The youth would like to send out a huge thank you to our host, reverend lori Cooney and her church family, for inviting us and for housing us on the days we will be there.
This trip will cap our already busy year. among our previous activities are hikes at Wildwood Park and a weekend retreat at Camp Hebron in Halifax. We are scheduled to serve at Downtown Daily Bread later this month, as well.
Clearly, Pine street Youth remain on the move!

John Dernbach: Distinguished Professor of law at Widener law school, who speaks to the history of the environmental rights amendment and to its treatment in Pennsylvania’s courts.
John Childe: attorney, Pennsylvania environmental Defense Foundation, who recently brought a case against the Commonwealth, which was based upon the environmental rights amendment and the state’s oil and Gas act.
