The Manor Winds Quintet Presented by Music at Pine Street on February 5 at 3:00 p.m.

Manor Winds is a talented new chamber ensemble comprised of five musicians who come together to rehearse in a loft space in their horn player’s historic manor in downtown Lancaster. While they love play­ ing many works from the standard repertoire, the musicians of Manor Winds are equally passionate about new music. With many recently written pieces in their repertoire, they look to program new works and help to represent local composers in the southeastern region of Penn­ sylvania. Manor Winds wishes to share their love of music and collab­ oration with their surrounding community. The quintet consists of flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon.

Matthew Angelo, flute, is an orchestral, chamber, and solo musician based in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania. Mr. Angelo has appeared as principal flute with the Bay­Atlantic Symphony and is the second flutist of the Liberty Wind Symphony. He also performs frequently with the Hartford Independent Chamber Orchestra, regular­ ly collaborates in a duo with flutist Mary Matthews, and is the flutist and co­founder of the Peroledi Duo with saxophonist Alyssa Hoffert. In February of 2016, the Peroledi Duo gave their European debut recital in Paris, France. In 2012, Mr. Angelo made his solo debut with the West Chester University Symphony Orchestra as a winner of their annual competition.

Lauren Fairfull, oboe, is a native of Lancaster County, and holds dual bachelor’s degrees in music from West Chester University and a Master’s degree in music per­ formance from The Peabody Conservatory of The Johns Hopkins University for which she was awarded a full scholarship. During her time at these institutions Ms. Fairfull performed in many ensembles as principle oboist and featured soloist. She has embarked on several orchestral and chamber tours throughout Europe and the States, which included performances at Carnegie Hall in New York City and The Kimmel Center in Philadelphia. She is currently the second oboist and English Horn of the Liberty Wind Symphony in Philadelphia while performing with local groups; Allegro Chamber Orchestra and Prana Wind Quintet. Ms. Fairfull resides in Lancaster, manages a successful jewelry boutique, and is actively es­ tablishing a freelance career.

Christy Banks, clarinet, is Associate Professor of Music (Clarinet and Saxophone) and Assistant Chair of the Music Department at Millersville University of Pennsyl­ vania. A former member of the Lincoln Symphony and the Nebraska Chamber Players, Banks has performed with the PA Philharmonic, the Harrisburg, Lancaster, and Reading Symphonies, Allegro Chamber Orchestra, and Opera Lancaster. She has appeared as a recitalist/soloist throughout the US as well as in Italy, Austria, Germany, and China. Passionate about new music, Banks is a member of NakedEye Ensemble and the Spatial Forces Duo. She holds degrees from the University of Nebraska­Lincoln and the Florida State University. Dr. Banks has served as the Pennsylvania State Chair and State Chair Coordinator of the International Clarinet Association and the founder of the Millersville University Single Reed Sympo­ sium.

Anne Nye, horn, received her Bachelor of Music degree in French Horn Perfor­ mance from Wheaton Conservatory of Music. Anne is fourth horn with the Penn­ sylvania Philharmonic and second horn with Allegro Chamber Orchestra, and per­ forms often with the Lancaster Symphony and the Opera Lancaster Orchestra. She is also a member of the Liberty Wind Symphony. She loves chamber music and co­formed many groups including the Susquehanna Wind Quintet and Prana Winds in addition to the Manor Winds. She is also a member of the Lancaster Brass Quintet. She recently per­ formed the Brahms Trio for Horn, Violin and Piano and the Reinecke Trio for Horn, Oboe and Piano. She is the adjunct horn teacher at Lancaster Bible College and maintains a small home studio. She lives in Lan­

caster with her husband Rob and enjoys gardening and running a small antique business on the side.

Robin Plant, bassoon, currently serves as principal bassoonist with the Lancaster Symphony, York Symphony, Pennsylvania Regional Ballet, and Endless Mountain Music Festival Orchestras. She has been featured as a soloist with the Lancaster Symphony, Philadelphia Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra, and Endless Mountain Mu­ sic Festival. She also frequently performs with other ensembles including the Har­ risburg Symphony, Delaware Symphony, Gettysburg Chamber Orchestra, and Al­ legro Chamber Orchestra. Robin received her formal training on bassoon while pursuing her Bachelor of Music in performance at Indiana University, where her principal teacher was Kim Walker. In addition to a busy performance schedule, Robin maintains a reed-making business and private teaching studio.

Adult Forums A New Addition to the Sunday Morning Experience If you aren’t in a class and are seeking a fresh beginning in your growth as a disciple of Christ, try out the adult forums on Sunday mornings. (The first Sunday of each month will be Bagels and Belief.) We never stop learning and growing!

▪ February 5 – Bagels and Belief: Christianity and Foreign Policy – What is a Christian perspective on foreign policy? How can Christians influence our nation’s foreign policy? Join Dr. Dean Curry, Profes­ sor of Politics at Messiah College, as he shares with us thoughts on this important subject.

▪ February 12, 19, and 26 – “Is the Protestant Reformation Still Relevant?” –This year marks the 500th

anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, one of the decisive movements in Christian history. Dr. Lee Barrett of Lancaster Theological Seminary will teach a series on this monumental event of Western civ­ ilization. The Reformation has been credited with introducing the notions that individuals have value simply because they are loved by God (rather than having value based on performance), that all indi­ viduals should think for themselves, that God can be found in the midst of ordinary life, that faith should be informed by critical reflection, and a host of other concepts. Moreover, the Reformation has been assessed in radically divergent ways, ranging from hailing it as the foundation of economic indi­ vidualism to regarding it as the source of Christian socialism. We will examine many of these historic themes, and ask if any continuing wisdom for our own era can be found in the aspirations of our spir­ itual ancestors. Do people like Luther and Calvin have anything crucial to say in our vexing and com­ plex time?

Session Highlights From the January Meeting Session met on January 17, 2017. Here are some of the highlights: ▪ Review of Membership Rolls – Letters were sent to inactive members in December, inviting them

to re-connect with our church and asking them if they wish to remain on the rolls. Based on the responses, the rolls have been updated. The active membership now stands at 300.

▪ Communion on the Lord’s Day - Beginning January 8, there will be one service of worship at

10:00 a.m. Session approved serving communion every service for the Lord’s Day in 2017, as well as at services on Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, and Christmas Eve. ▪ Downtown Daily Bread Reorganization – Session received an update on the operations and ac­

tivities of Downtown Daily Bread since the last meeting. The report was exceptionally well re­ ceived, with much interest in the positive moves being planned. Please see the DDB article on page 7 of Pine Street Life for a summary.

▪ Stewardship - Chantal Atnip reported that the Stewardship Committee met in December and has

begun planning a year-round stewardship awareness calendar. She is following up with mem­ bers who did not submit their 2017 estimated giving cards. There will be a Lenten challenge for officers and the congregation to tithe for the month of March.

▪ Extending God’s Love Core Ministry Team - Marty Gruver reported that the team has been very

active, and he gave a special thanks to the Giving Tree Committee, led by Laura Messner, for an outstanding job. He also reported that the Presbyterian Apartment event in December went excep­ tionally well, with over 10 Pine Street members participating, and more than 40 residents attend­ ing.

The Peace and Global Witness Offering The Good Your Gifts Have Done The yearly Peace and Global Witness Offering was received at Pine Street last October and distributed in December. The 25% which is designated to a local project went to the Teaching Peace Initiative, a

group which forms Peace Clubs in Harrisburg High School, Harrisburg Sci-Tech, and other schools in Dauphin and Cumberland Counties.

The 25% portion of our offering this year amounted to $421, a fine result. The Extending God’s Love Team voted, and Session approved, supplementing this amount with $1,000 from available Mission funds.

Dr. Joyce M. Davis chairs the Teaching Peace project in her role as President of the World Affairs Council of Harrisburg. Dr. Davis wrote to thank us, stating in part, “Your donation will go a long way toward helping us reach out to youth in our region to teach peacemaking skills, respect for diversity and religious tolerance…. We are working now with high school and college interns, as well as those who are part of our Global Scholars network. … We are dedicating our International Poetry and Sto­ rytelling Competition to having youth write about local and global peacemaking…. Please express our sincerest thanks to Pine Street Presbyterian Church.”

The remaining portion of the offering went to Presbytery and Synod peacemaking efforts. The Extend­ ing God’s Love Team appreciates your generosity.

Giving in Gratitude A Lenten Challenge It’s hard to believe that a month has already passed since the wonderful Christmas celebrations we experienced both at Pine Street and in our homes. But indeed, we will soon be moving from celebrat­ ing Christ’s birth, to joining Him on his road to the cross, before joyously celebrating His resurrection on Easter morning!

This fall, we were challenged to give in gratitude. For Lent, the Stewardship Committee is challenging the officers of Pine Street (Session, Deacons, and Trustees), to tithe for the month of March. We are asking officers, for one month, to give to Pine Street 1/10th (one tenth) of their income – not as an obli­ gation – but in gratitude for God’s great gifts to us: life, family, community, and most of all, the gift of His son, Jesus Christ. We are also asking you, our congregation and friends, to join our officers in this challenge.

Over the years as treasurer of Pine Street, I have been asked many questions on tithing: ▪ I make VERY little. How can I tithe?

▪ Answer: This came from our minister when I was first married – 10% of a little is VERY little.

▪ Do I tithe on my take-home pay or full salary?

▪ Answer: You will know what is right for you. Start with the smaller amount.

Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in my house, and thus put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts; see if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing.

Finally, as you give, offer God a prayer of thanks, your own, or one we’ve used in our family since our daughters were young: Thank you God for this good day And all that makes it fair: Our home, our family, food, and friends, And for Your love and care. Amen.

Boyd Memorial Center turns 100: 1916-2016 Part III—Post-WWII and the Fifties A slow, gradual decline in attendance at the various Boyd activities began in the late 1940’s and continued throughout the 1950’s and into the early 1960’s. As Harrisburg and much of the country plunged into the postWorld War II era of modernization, young people were no longer excited about taking a bus downtown for rec­ reation in an aging building with antiquated bowling alleys. The housing boom was a reality and many families were opting to move into the suburbs where new homes and schools were springing up at a rapid pace. Central Dauphin and other area schools were attracting families with children away from the Harrisburg schools of William Penn and John Harris. Pine Street Church was still very strong but the Boyd building and programs were no longer the magnet to young people as they were in the 1920’s and 1930’s.

Herbert A. Rupert, Boyd Center Director from 1946 – 1962, reported that “bowling is sick and it may be that the patient will die.” He sent 685 reply-post cards to the women of the church urging them to bowl at Boyd. The net result was 8 replies. He further reported that “no Pine Street men’s group uses the bowling alleys at all and use by other groups continue but in a very small volume.”

In 1950 Director Rupert reported that “the Boys Club is averaging 100 boys in attendance each week. This is below the average for last year, but it is not so apparent except in the smaller number of boys eating dinner.

Last year we fed 75 boys per week and this year the average is down to 55. The Girls Club (The Boydettes) has gone down-hill rapidly. Leaders of the Girls Club have voiced the opinion that the club should be discontin­ ued. The club has a good staff; however, it needs a driving, dedicated leader to weld this staff together and give purpose and meaning to the club. If we cannot find such a person, The Boydettes will cease to exist.”

As the Boyd Center programs struggled through the 1950’s and into the early 1960’s, the Session of Pine Street Church, along with other dedicated church leaders, began having serious discussions as to what should be done to the Boyd building and future programs.

The next issue of Pine Street Life will tell of the vision and plans for Boyd that became a reality in 1966 for the 50th Anniversary of the Boyd Memorial Center.

Downtown Daily Bread Focusing on the Future Pine Street Presbyterian Church is Downtown Daily Bread, and Downtown Daily Bread is Pine Street Presby­ terian Church. We gather and learn and worship at Pine Street, and then, armed with the knowledge of God’s vision for our world, we “do it” at Downtown Daily Bread. The two are inseparable. The one is the mother, the other the child. Pine Street gave birth to Downtown Daily Bread more than 30 years ago. We’ve nurtured it and watched it grow. We are proud of it. And thankful for all who have guided it. But is time to ask what is next?

How can we re-dedicate and re-energize?

We are asking: Can we provide more services? Can we prepare healthier meals? Can we expand our hours?

Can we connect with others who feed and shelter the same clients? Can we move people from homelessness to homes? Can we feed the mind and the soul in addition to the body?

Beginning in January we opened Downtown Daily Bread for additional hours, expanded our counseling ser­ vices, and are feeding more and more people. The number of clients using our Drop-in-Center has pushed us to capacity. We are in conversations to open the Adult Learning Center during the daytime hours.

On January 31 Pine Street hosted a roundtable with service provider leaders in our community. The purpose was to discuss the current operations of DDB and the possibilities for its future.

Attendees included representatives from Bethesda Mission, The Foundation for Enhancing Communities, Shalom House, the Capital Area Coalition on Homelessness, Dauphin County, The Partnership for Hope, Pinnacle Health, Family Promise, and TriCounty OIC, among others. Be on the lookout for information about how these organizations will help Downtown Daily Bread form and shape its programs in the future.

Finally, even though our Downtown Daily Bread is practically grown up, it still needs us. In the coming weeks and months, you may be called on to help. PLEASE SAY YES!

Welcome to our New Members!

The Following New Members were Received into Pine Street on January 22 Kenneth, Mary, Claire, and Chase Clemens. Ken and Mary j oin us by letter of transfer from Faith Presbyterian Church in Harrisburg. Ken is the chief operating officer of URL Insurance group. A graduate of Furman University, Ken loves golf, tennis, and hiking, and enjoys spending time with family and friends. Mary is self-employed as an interior decorator with “Key De­ sign.” She serves in the community as a member of the board of Fort Hunter, the Symphony House, and the Pinnacle Health Women’s Auxiliary. Ken and Mary are proud parents of teenagers, Claire and Chase, who are also joining Pine Street. Claire is a freshman at Emory University where she is studying biology, and Chase is a junior at the Hill School in Pottstown, Pennsylva­ nia.

Ted and Bobbye Gregory. Ted is retired from owning his own insurance business for 60 years. He enj oys open water swim­ ming, motorcycling throughout the U.S. and Canada, and golfing. He is transferring his membership from Silver Spring Presby­ terian Church in Mechanicsburg. Bobbye has been an investment advisor for 20 years. She has volunteered her time and work with Hampden Township and has been heavily involved in Republican politics. She enjoys history, Zumba, and tap dancing.

She is joining by re-affirmation of her faith.

Greg Lane. A native of Harrisburg, Greg has lived also in Boston and Miami. Greg is an attorney and a Civil Service Com­ missioner for the state. Greg plays golf, loves reading, and enjoys music. Greg is also a big fan of Penn State football!

Jan Nilsen. A daughter of missionaries, Jan was born in Jos, Nigeria, and attended school there. Jan has a bachelor’s degree in nursing and has worked as an emergency room trauma nurse. She enjoys swimming, music, taking walks, and studying the Bible. Jan is a cancer survivor and praises God for healing in her life. She is transferring her membership from the West Shore Evangelical Free Church.

Keith Perago. A native of York, Pennsylvania, Keith comes to us from the West Shore Evangelical Free Church. Keith has worked for 30 years as a planview business administrator with PHEAA in Harrisburg. He enjoys gardening, history, arts, and fellowship with family and friends. He works part-time also giving personal care to a senior.

Alan and Gwen Schreur. Both Alan and Gwen hail originally from Michigan. They have lived in Michigan, Georgia, and Pennsylvania. Alan retired as a financial manager from Universal Health Services, and Gwen has worked in various jobs, recent­ ly as an interior decorator. They are transferring their membership from the Valley Forge Presbyterian Church, in King of Prus­ sia, Pennsylvania. Alan served there as an elder and chair of the mission committee, and Gwen served both as a deacon and an elder.

Please make it a point to meet and greet these new Pine Streeters. We are thankful that they have chosen to worship with us and represent Pine Street in our community. Welcome!!
