Dear Friends: If you work in sales, you can say, “win some, lose some,” and roll with the punches. If you work with people, you can not afford to “lose some.” Downtown Daily Bread (DDB) counselors often learn that a client who has taken two steps forward has moved two steps backwards. “Bill” recently returned to Harrisburg after several months in a rehabilitation facility. Working with Bill, the counselor was able to find an alcohol rehabilitation program. Unfortunately, after Bill was released from the program, he relapsed and came back to DDB. “Linda” a pregnant homeless young woman came to DDB and was offered prenatal care along with temporary housing so that she could care for her baby. The arrangement did not work for Linda. She put her baby up for adoption and returned to DDB. “Mario” transitioned from homelessness to employment with DDB help. After four months he found the work physically taxing and resigned. Bill, Linda, and Mario each returned to DDB asking for a second chance. Everyone at Downtown Daily Bread knows that clients often need to be given a second and third chance. They have many obstacles to overcome. Although disappointed, human service workers cannot say, “You win some; you lose some.” Instead, we view clients the way we view ourselves; as imperfect human beings who make mistakes. We try not to judge individuals. Instead, we feed them, clothe them and provide them with the services they need. It is not an easy job and requires many talents and gifts from the staff. However, we try to be optimistic and believe that as long as one is living and breathing there is hope. We hope that you will continue to support the work of DDB with your tax deductible donation. A meal can be prepared for $2 per person or $200 for 100 people. DDB provides 90 showers a week for the homeless, 36 lockers, mailing address, free clothing and health checks, in addition to counseling, transportation, employment and other services. Thank you for helping us help those in need. Warm regards,
Elaine Strokoff Executive Director
