Holy God, we confess that we fail to put our trust in you completely. We calculate our gains and losses, hoarding the things that do not lead to abundant life. Forgive us, and help us to treasure only you, that we may follow you faithfully and discover the blessings only you can give. John Merbecke

ANTHEM Take Up Your Cross, the Savior Said Paul Bouman

OF FAITH Excerpts from A Brief Statement of Faith In life and in death we belong to God. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve. With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

WELCOME

THE PEACE One: The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Many: And also with you. (Please sign the Friendship Register)

“Take up your cross,” the Savior said, “if you would my disciple be; forsake the past, and come this day, and humbly follow after me.” Take up your cross; let not its weight pervade your soul with vain alarm; his strength shall bear your spirit up, sustain your heart, and nerve your arm. Take up your cross, nor heed the shame, not let your foolish heart rebel; for you, the Lord endured the cross to save your soul from death and hell. Take up your cross and follow Christ, nor think till death to lay it down; for only those who bear the cross may hope to wear a golden crown.

BEARING AND FOLLOWING THE WORD OF GOD INTO THE WORLD † HYMN Take Up Your Cross, the Savior Said BOURBON † BENEDICTION

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.

Amen. DISTRIBUTION OF THE BREAD AND CUP

The flowers in the sanctuary are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Gary Clemens by Baiba Clemens and her children. Today marks the first day of A SEASONOF PEACE, Sponsored yearly by the PCUSA as a month long pilgrimage to deepen the pursuit of peace by congregations, families, and individuals.

A Season of Peace ends on World Communion Sunday, October 2nd , when we participate in the Peace and Global Witness Offering. 25% of the offering is directed to a local peacemaking project. This year the EGL Team has selected the International Service Center. The congregation is very acquainted with this center, having contributed money, food and grocery gift cards, clothing, household goods, and other supplies to support ISC’s Afghan refugee resettlement project. We have also joined with Market Square Presbyterian church to form a volunteer group to provide ongoing support for an Afghan refugee family. The Center’s director, Dr. Truong Phuong, was our speaker at last Sunday morning’s Forum. You may register for daily reflections on peace here: //PCUSA.org/subscribeSOP
