G ATHERING IN THE P RESENCE OF THE R ISEN C HRIST

PRAYER OF PREPARATION

O God, light of the minds that know you, life of the souls that love you, strength of the thoughts that seek you: Help us so to know you that we may truly love you, so to love you that we may fully serve you, whose service is perfect freedom, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

† CALL TO WORSHIP

One: I will remember the works of the Lord, and call to mind your wonders of old.

Many: I will meditate on all your acts and ponder your mighty deeds.

One: Your way, O God, is holy.

Many: You are the God who works wonders and have declared your power among us.

One: You led your people like a flock across the waters and still your footsteps are not seen.

Many: By your strength, we have been redeemed. Let us worship God!

HYMN 308 O God in Whom All Life Begins

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

God of mercy, we confess that we too often give in to the yearnings of the flesh. We have impure thoughts. We idolize those who misuse power. We harbor jealousies and are quick to anger. We neglect to care for others and gratify our own desires. Forgive us, O God, and cleanse us of our sin. Lead us to ways of love, joy, and peace. Send your Spirit to plant patience, kindness, and generosity, and lead us to be gentle in our care for all of your people.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

One: Amidst thunderous storms and rocky waters, God reaches out to us in love. Many: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God!

† GLORIA

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

† AFFIRMATION OF FAITH from the Second Helvetic Confession

Yes, and it sometimes happens that God in his just judgement allows the truth of his Word, and the catholic faith, and the proper worship of God to be so obscured and overthrown that the Church seems almost extinct, and no more to exist, as we see to have happened in the days of Elijah, and at other times. Meanwhile, God has in this world and in this darkness his true worshippers, and those not a few, but even seven thousand and more. For the apostle exclaims: God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal, “The Lord knows those who are his.”

† THE PEACE

One: The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Many: And also with you.

ANTHEM Thou Art God Lionel Bourne

Thou art the peace of all things calm, thou art the place to hide from harm, thou art the light in dark, thou art the heart’s eternal spark, thou art the door that’s open wide, thou art the guest who waits inside, thou art the stranger at the door, thou art the calling of the poor. Thou art the peace of all things calm, thou art the place to hide from harm, thou art the light that shines in dark, thou art the heart’s eternal spark, thou art the door that’s open wide, thou art the guest who waits inside, thou art the stranger at the door, thou art the calling of the poor. Thou art peace, thou art calm. Thou art my love, thou art my Lord and with me still, thou art my love, keep me from ill, thou art the light, the truth, the way. Thou art my Savior this day, thou art my Savior this very day.
