SERMON “A Place to Fail and Get Things Wrong” Rev. Drumheller

† AFFIRMATION OF FAITH from Philippians 2:6-11

We believe in Jesus Christ, who, though he existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, assuming human likeness. And being found in appearance as a human, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death—even death on a cross. Therefore, God exalted him even more highly and gave him the name that is above every other name, so that at the name given to Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

† THE PEACE

One: The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.

Many: And also with you.

ANTHEM Alone, Thou Goest Forth, O Lord Michael McCabe

Alone thou goest forth, O Lord, in sacrifice to die. Is this thy sorrow naught to us who pass unheeding by? Our sins, not thine, thou bearest, Lord, make us thy sorrow feel, till through our pity and our shame love answers love’s appeal. This is earth’s darkest hour, but thou dost light and life restore; this is earth’s darkest hour, but thou dost light and life restore; then let all praise be given thee who livest evermore. Give us compassion Lord for thee, that as we share this hour, thy cross may bring to us thy joy and resurrection power. Amen, Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Temptation of Jesus

“Throughout Lent we are using photography to explore the idea of wilderness.

In the story of Jesus’ temptation, we acknowledge that the wilderness is a place in which failure is a reasonable path forward. Though the wilderness can be stark and barren, it is still a place of life.”
