So, you’ve been approved as a prospective member. Now what?

We have 17 houses. How do you choose?

As you know, living in a co-op can be a great way to save some money on living costs and make some friends. However, it is important to be aware of the responsibilities that come along with MSU SHC membership. Living in a co-op comes with the philosophy and principles of being member-owned and operated. This means that there are duties that must be upheld by every house. These duties include house officer positions, house chores, mandatory bi-weekly meetings, and conflict management. It is expected of all members that they actively participate in the co-ownership and co-management of their house.

Although it may seem overwhelming at first,

these duties are distributed evenly among the members of every house to lighten the load. This distribution is determined by the number of hours these duties require. Additionally, more involved tasks such as house officer positions, office labor, and certain house chores provide members with opportunities for growth in professional skills which apply to the development of a resume.

These responsibilities apply to all of the possible houses you may choose to live in, but they may tackle them in various ways. For this reason, it is critical that you ask questions while touring and read the constitution of any house you are interested in signing to.

Apollo’s interests and activities are extremely diverse, ranging from gaming, theater, and politics, to art, camping, and music.

Some things that make us unique are our 5 home-cooked meals a week, the parking money we make on football game days, and our newly renovated kitchen. We like to study, watch movies, and play games on weeknights and go out together on the weekends. We are a group of people that feels like a family!

The structure of the house and the members within, make this co-op feel like a true family. As a house, we value cleanliness and sustainability. We compost, recycle, and garden regularly! Consent and supporting one another is our house’s most important value. As a smaller house, we get to know one another very well. The house tends to be quiet enough to study during the week while also busy as we spend weeknights watching movies, playing games, painting murals, or cooking together. On the weekends, Beal members often go out together or host impromptu events. We

also love spending time outdoors whether that be hanging on the porch, going on hiking and camping trips, grilling veggie dogs, or tailgating!

While it’s close enough to MSU's campus to walk or ride a bike to class, it’s far enough away from the hustle and bustle of a college town. We’re a vegetarian based co-op with a meal plan including vegetarian/vegan dinners 4-5 days a week. Bower also has an ADA accessible bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living room. We love to play video and board games, watch movies, play with our cats, and have craft nights. At 19 members Bower is a little smaller than some of the more popular houses, but we still love to bond and have fun together as housemates. We work hard to be sustainable and environmentally friendly by having our own compost and garden! If you want to live in a place with a diverse group of caring, open minded people, Bower is the place to be!

We are all pretty good friends, and we always try to accommodate each other’s needs so that everyone feels comfortable in their home. Each Bowian is unique, with different majors from STEM to the arts, and different interests from cooking to sports. We love to play video games, watch movies, and have dance parties together. We are a cleaner house and try to (nicely!) hold each other accountable for cleaning up after ourselves. We very strongly value consent at Bowie, and make consent (in all areas of life) a house norm. With Sunday - Thursday dinners, 20 parking spots, all singles, and wonderful people, Bowie House is where you will make great memories and become part of a new family!

We welcome diverse backgrounds, experiences, and are femme/queer friendly. We strive to fight the badisms and operate as an intentionally anti-oppressive house by not allowing sexism, racism, transphobia, classism, homophobia, etc.

Boundaries matter and we require consent. Our house values spending quality time with each other and ensuring a safe (but fun) space for all.

Highlights: Plant room Hedrick is a nice, spacious co-op with fifteen single rooms and thirteen parking spaces. The house features a cozy living room called the Plant Room which is a great place to study and get work done. There is also another living room area with a TV and lots of couches. There is a garden outside that provides plants like tomatoes, zucchinis, and herbs in the summer and fall. The house is pretty eco friendly and has been described by members as a very relaxed house that is more on the quiet side but with many socializing opportunities.

Our house is neat and homey.

Since we’re so small, we’re a relatively quiet house, and you can find people downstairs doing homework most weeknights. But we also love house bonding! Since there are only a few of us, it’s easy for us to all spend time together and really get to know each other. We embrace creativity and self-expression, but we also have a competitive side. Our goal is to be a home for all our members.

Stepping into New Comm is like stepping into wonderland! It is the most magical place imaginable, a place where you can truly be yourself. New Comm has a very relaxed environment, the couches are comfy, the cartoons are hilarious, and the company is wonderful. New Comm exists for the sake of spreading love and kindness throughout the universe, through compassion and cooperation. You’ll find the most kind and genuine people at New Comm, and that is really what makes this house special!

As home to 29 people, Phoenix is not the cleanest but we all have a lot of love for the house. We welcome students and non-students alike, and are located a short walk from campus if you’re into that.

Phoenix is a home to all that are willing to make it their own! We offer a mix of singles and doubles, cozy common spaces, and plenty of parking in the trash lot. With so many personalities and energy under one roof, there’s bound to be something up most nights at Phoenix, but no telling what it will be. It’s a choose-your-own-adventure cooperative experience.

Raft tends to be a quieter, studious house, but evenings in our common spaces consist of house dinners, video games, and Rose-and-Thorn recaps. We grow produce in our summer garden and enjoy our large deck year round. Connecting to our communities is easy since campus is a block away and the East Lansing farmer’s market is in view from our front door. For anyone that needs a refuge in the storm of school, this raft is for you!

In September 2017 Rivendell became a member of MSU Student Housing Cooperative (MSU SHC).

With property located in downtown Lansing (Rivendell) 731 W Genesee St. (100 year old house, 1917 build date) members strive to pursue a low-impact, ecologically-friendly lifestyle.

Our membership is diverse, with a mix of people who work full time and upper level students or graduate students, along with our furry friends. The Shire is conveniently located about 10 minutes from MSU, down the road from Meijer and the Meridian Mall. Additionally, there is a bike path next to us that runs all the way to Lake Lansing and connects into several other hiking trails.

Our smaller house size offers a unique opportunity to get involved with the co-op, as each member is expected to hold an officer position. The smaller size of our house gives each

Shares and Dues A Share is a financial stake and equity in the Co-op, and all members must pay it in order to own the Co-op. Dues are a one-time, non-refundable member fee that allows our Co-op to maintain it’s national Co-op connections to other like-minded organizations. New members pay Shares ($435) and Dues ($80) upon signing a Contract, totalling $515.00. The cost of shares is similar to a security deposit in that it is refundable. The cost of dues is a combination of a key deposit ($10 refundable) and dues ($70 not refundable). The cost of shares and the key deposit goes directly back into the SHC operating fund which will be used to protect the SHC from bad debt accrued by members during their time as a member.

Shares will be returned in increments after a member decides to move out. The initial refund amount is $300 less any balance or plus any credit the member has on their tenant ledger. The remainder of the shares ($125) is kept for audit purposes. The final return occurs once the final

bills of their house have arrived for the SHC to audit.

The purpose of the co-op charging shares is to provide all of its members an economic democracy. Meaning, each member has an equal share and one vote when decisions are made unlike an investor-owned corporation where people who have the most money and shares have the most control over the way the business is run.

Co-op History Student housing co-ops began in the U.S. around the turn of the century when students in Austin, Texas and Gainesville, Florida began providing themselves with meal plans. These co-ops added upon this framework by observing and participating in the rise of the Cooperative League of the USA (CLUSA) through the 20s.

At the end of the 20s, the Great Depression set in and students were struggling to get by. At this time a renewed vision of social and economic cooperation was introduced by co-op activist and religious leader Toyohiko Kagawa. Inspired by his insights, the 30s saw the emergence of such long standing co-ops as the Berkeley, California; Ann Arbor, Michigan; and Toronto, Ontario co-op systems.

WWII inhibited some of the potential growth of this time, yet, at the end of the war, new demand for student housing and the establishment of co-op systems in Ithaca, New York; Oberlin, Ohio; and Lincoln, Nebraska arose.

The late 40s saw the first attempt at a national student cooperative organization known as NASCL, or the North American Student Cooperative League. Although successful, this organization eventually died out in the mid 50s when it lost support from its major funding source, CLUSA. The 60s brought new enthusiasm to student cooperatives due to the political climate. Student cooperatives were attractive to the Free Speech Movement and the anti-war movement because they provided a social and political alternative to the post-industrial capitalist system. In 1968, the North American Students of Co-operation (NASCO) was formed to take the place of NASCL. Today, NASCO functions as the main networking and support service of student co-ops.

If you decide you wish to sign to a house you have toured there are only a few more steps to complete the process. First, you must attend a house meeting (and possibly an optional free dinner depending on the house). Email the same membership officer you contacted for the tour

informing them you’d like to attend a meeting.

Following the meeting you will be emailed the house’s decision on your approval into the co-op.

Following approval, the membership officer will let you know when your tour card has been submitted and how to schedule a contract signing appointment at the SHC office.
