Contributed by Tim DeVries, Hedrick house Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence?

Five signers were captured by the British as traitors and tortured before they died.

Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.

Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army, another had two sons captured.

Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War. They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.

What kind of men were they?

Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated. But they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.

Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.

Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.

Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton. At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters.

He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.

Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.

John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year, he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished. A few weeks later, he died from exhaustion and a broken heart.

Norris and Livingston suffered similar fates.

Such were the stories and sacrifices of the American Revolution. These were not wild-eyed, rabble-rousing ruffians. They were soft-spoken men of means and education. They had security, but they valued liberty more.

Standing talk straight, and unwavering, they pledged: "For the support of this declaration, with firm reliance on the protection of the divine providence, we mutually pledge to each other, our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor."

They gave you and me a free and independent America. The history books never told you a lot about what happened in the Revolutionary War. We didn't fight just the British. We were British subjects at that time and we fought our own government!

Some of us take these liberties so much for granted, but we shouldn't.

So, take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July Holiday and silently thank these patriots. It's not much to ask for the price they paid.

Another timeless co-op anecdote by Darrett Bunce (Everyone has a colorful roommate story. Here's mine.)

A couple years ago a guy named Sean moved into Elsworth. Sean had several annoying habits and characteristics (including: breaking things by playing soccer in the house, speaking in a fake English accent half the time he lived at Elsworth even though he was not English, propositioning every single woman in the house at one time or another, and making crude sexual jokes at every opportunity-- all of which would tend to happen when he was drunk, which was all the time.) His most colorful characteristic was his obsession with the penis. The most memorable thing he did: he mowed Elsworth's yard in the shape of a penis when he was our lawn/yard maintenance person. Elsworth has a big yard too. We could fit another house in our yard comfortably. He maintained it too. It was a little hard to notice from the ground but I think it was meant to be viewed from the air. It wasn't a surprise when he did it. This kind of thing had been going on at the house for a while. Every week without fail (and sometimes many times during that week), on our dry erase message and menu boards would appear a familiar talking penis character. And when it seemed he was gone for good -- finally the artist had grown tired of penis jokes-- he would appear again with a cartoon bubble coming out of his mouth: "Remember me?". Sometimes a penis would appear in house graffiti-- no doubt left behind for future coopers who weren't yet around to appreciate a good penis drawing. Of course, all the penis drawings were backed up by penis jokes whenever Sean could think of one ( which meant most of his conversations). All the drawings culminated in a final artistic masterpiece. An artist in the house inspired by Sean's sense of humor (and who participated almost equally in the penis cartoons) decided to do a house portrait. The picture was of a long penis doing a certain sexual act with a character that represented a certain organization that will remain nameless except that it represented (and still does) a popular target of anger among coopers. Standing on top of it's shaft were all 21 members of Elsworth each individually rendered so as to be recognizable

Sam's Yummy Good Recipe for the Week Scallops with Wine and Cheese Sauce 1c water 1 lb Bay scallops, rinsed and drained 3/4 c shredded cheese 1 tbsp flour 1/2 c dry white wine 2 tsp margarine 1/2 tsp dry mustard 1/4 tsp garlic powder 3 English muffins Place water in skillet. Bring to boil, add scallops. Cook 2-4 min.

Drain. Set aside.

Combine flour and cheese until cheese is coated. Set aside.

Combine wine, margarine, mustard, and garlic in saucepan. Bring to boil.

Stir in cheese mixture. Cook until cheese melts. Stir constantly.

Stir in scallops. Cook 1-2 min until hot. Remove from heat.

Spoon scallops and cheese mixture over toasted muffin halves.
