Whether it be art, finance, buisness, athletics, or any field of study, the SHC serves as a platform to engage your interest, build connections, and acquire/develop skills that can benefit you FOREVER. Yes, I know this sounds general, and moderately corny, but the truth is, the MSU SHC is a lot like MSU in the sense that you can pursue, develop, research and extend yourself in any area you want! That's kind of intimidating in way! The MSU SHC is a place where you can confide in your housemates, seek guidance from them, the staff, and roam where you need to.

There are committees to create places for organizational dialogue, but Lord knows the "organization" is US, and we go beyond meetings, so think about what you want to see, let's talk about it, let's plan it out, let's make it happen!

Holly Jo Sparks Executive Director

Who is a musician you've been listening to as of late? What do you like about that musician?

M.I.A. and L7. My music tastes are eclectic, but recently I’ve been getting in touch with my inner grunge and gangster grrrl. M.I.A.’s music admittedly has more layered, melodic and complex beats that make me want to dance. I appreciate the raw, unapologetic sound of these female artists. They energize me.

What do you like to do outside of work and why?

Yoga, feng shui, trivia, bonfires, wine, tea and travel. Anything that gets me off the grid or out of my physical comfort zone. I’m not particularly athletic (in fact, when it comes to sports, I'm the family klutz), but I like to be in motion or creating things. Not going to lie: i’m also a binge Netflix viewer and purveyor of Young-Adult literature. I need to engage my mind and find these activities help me relax and recharge.

How do you see MSU SHC in the grand scheme of the cooperative movement? (In the context of the campus, the city, the state, the U.S., the world?)

The State of Michigan, generally, and MSU SHC, in particular, have long been innovators within the cooperative movement. We contribute ideas and lifelong cooperators to the national movement. Regionally, I think SHC can do a lot to support cooperative development and inter-cooperation. MSU actually hosts the only USDA-funded cooperative development center in the state, which provides education and business services to rural areas. Consequently, SHC is in a unique position to learn more about the intersection of urban and rural cooperative activities if we participate.

I also believe this is a watershed moment for SHC as a student housing co-op, : student debt and educational expenses are on the rise, but so too are the social and economic conditions that support co-op expansion. Our job is to recognize and take advantage of the big opportunities, while sustaining SHC’s strong culture of student leadership, house autonomy and member engagement.

How do you see your role in the MSU SHC?

Coach, Mentor, Motivator, First Mate. I’ve been called the captain of the ship, but I actually think that’s the President’s job—to act on behalf of the membership. My role, first and foremost, is to pay attention to the safety and sustainability of the co-op. I’m also planner and community builder at heart, so I’d like to think that I’ll bring a strong sense of co-op identity, vision and pride to SHC. Anything else you want to add...feel free!

This Fall, one of my goals is to meet every member of the co-op, either 1-on-1 or at house dinners and events. I’d also like to reach out to more alumni. Together with EC and staff, I’ve already started assessing some of SHC’s important challenges and thinking about long-range plans. I look forward to adding to this momentum with everyone’s ideas and dreams.

Dan Birkholz President

I’m very passionate about this organization and this movement in general. I love the community and the people that create it. This is my third year in the SHC. I’ve lived in Vesta, Orion, and now Phoenix! I’ve met some very beautiful people in these houses and have learned a lot about myself and others.

I’ve gained patience and tolerance and have learned how to support many different personalities. I love to make people laugh, engage in interesting and challenging conversations, dancing, and rocking out with my super awesome rock&roll band that I am honored to be able to perform with. I love everyone. I love saying hi. Feel free to come to me with anything, except bullshit. Don’t come at me with non a that.

We are very excited to revive this periodical. We believe it can be a very useful tool for sharing information about houses, our culture, uniting organizations around campus, recounting stories and events, sharing perspective, and promoting events and efforts around the city. We are hoping to receive articles from ANYONE who wishes to send us writings. An ideal vision for the Pine Press includes sharing publications with offices, organizations, and businesses around campus and the city, as well as with our friends at the Inter-Cooperative Council (ICC) in Ann Arbor. We see a lot of potential in this avenue to spread awareness of our movement, our organization, and creating relationships around the community. COME AND JOIN US! My Vision for SHC

As for life in the SHC, we are also very excited. More than 2/3rds of the membership is new! This means a lot of new ideas and fresh energy. It also means that returning members have an obligation of education. The coordinating Executive Committee has strong beliefs around building community and fostering strong cooperative culture.

I think our collective vision for houses is one of safe, welcoming spaces that allow members and guests to feel comfortable expressing who they are, comfortable learning about and exploring our identities and nurturing a culture that promotes personal growth.

This takes effort to achieve. We must be able to communicate with each other, expressing our expectations and wishes. More importantly, we must be able to LISTEN to each other and understand each other’s needs. We made a decision to live together. Let’s work to make sure that that was, and continues to be, a great decision.

Membership Service Coordinator I am the new Membership Services Coordinator. Simply stated, my responsibility to ensure you and your fellow members have the skills, support and resources to maximize your co-op experience! Personally, I am a world traveler. I have lived in South Africa and the United Kingdom. My favorite cities that I have lived in are Cape Town, South Africa, New Orleans and London. Last year on my birthday, I had a meal on the roof of London’s Big Ben. I’m also quite social, gay (literally and figuratively) and have connections with people all over the world. My hometown is Seattle, Washington. Executive Director Holly Jo (HJ) and I share a passion for economic justice, collaboration and community living. We both also happen to have Masters degrees from two excellent universities: HJ went to MIT, I went to Harvard. I wish you all the best on your journey this year! Remember, I have some good connections, even in Lansing! I hope to support you (and also have the training) to help you with your personal and professional goals. Imagine getting to know HJ and I and having two excellent recommenders for your future! Feel free to connect - I’d be happy to have a coffee at the Broad Museum, where my friend works, or enjoy happy hours by having a glass of wine or local beer. We could also travel to different cities, if you’re up for an adventure. Seriously, take a leap and reach out!

Hello Co-oppers, I am a licensed builder and contractor dedicated to maintaining and steadily increasing the quality of the co-ops assets while helping to make sure your daily maintenance needs are met.

In addition to construction I have a strong background in organizing, educating and training around Peace and Justice and environmental issues. Some of the work I’ve done that has strongly influenced my life includes: facilitating trainings in nonviolent resistance for classes of international volunteers in Israel, the West Bank and The Gaza Strip, living with traditional Navajo elders resisting relocation off their traditional lands, organizing nonviolent resistance to destruction of the old growth redwood forest, and helping organize resistance to the invasion and occupation of Iraq.

East Lansing is my home. I grew up in East Lansing and lived 18 years on Collingwood just north of our SHC houses. Over the decades I have witnessed positive growth both on and off campus. Our community is thriving with many rich venues cultural, social and athletic which I enjoy. My non-working hours include gym time, Rotary, model railroading and reading historical biographies. I build schools in Haiti as a global mission endeavor. This summer my wife and I vacationed in "wild" Alaska. The fresh salmon is delicious.

I love working for the SHC and look forward to helping it grow into the future.

Hopefully you know my role in the SHC. Something special... During periods of my youth, I lived on the Navajo reservation in a hogan. We had no running water, electricity, or modern facilities. What do I bring?

As VP I've got experience. I've owners and operated two LLC. Corps.

Built a few personal homes and have worked in many facets of the construction industry on projects ranging from 2.3 billion to 50 bucks (haha).

I’m Katie Nagle, the Corporate Treasurer; I’ve lived at Orion House for the past two years. I graduated in the spring with a Bachelors in Spanish, and I’m currently interning as a student teacher at Grand Blanc High School.

I’m looking forward to maintaining the financial health of our beloved cooperative and helping all the house treasurers ensure financial stability at the house level. I enjoy traveling, craft beer, house meals, and long walks on the beach. Let’s have a great year. xo.

Living a good life is a lot like catching a wild chicken...you have to try really hard, and you’ll fail a few times, but once you succeed, you have to let it go because you don’t know what to do with it.

This is my approach to my work for the SHC. I am going to catch this chicken, but I hope to never let go of the valuable life lessons I will learn along the way.

Cooperative Living Reimagined; A Super Co-op in East Lansing A project is underway at the Student Housing Cooperative. The project, currently being referred to as the CCDP (Collingwood Coop Development Project), stemmed out of an interest and need to offer new housing opportunities for students and community members while at the same time creating a space for like-minded organizations in East Lansing on the corner of Collingwood Drive and Grand River Ave. The CCDP would require the removal of three co-op houses, Hedric, Ferency, and Miles Davis. These houses have been selected because of the old age and condition of the buildings.

A report from the Physical Development Committee details the vision for the project.The new co-op is referred to as the “New Hedric House” in this excerpt.

“The MSU SHC is currently considering building a new socially responsible, universally accessible, mixed use co-op with approximately 100 units on the corner of Collingwood and Albert.

The New Hedric House would contain common spaces dedicated to maintaining the history and art of the Miles Davis and Ferency co-ops, possibly, in the form of a Miles Davis performance space and a Ferency Fair Trade Cafe while continuing Hedric’s tradition of being one of the oldest and most cutting edge co-ops in the country.”

The major push for this project lies in the details.

A new housing structure in East Lansing requires approval from and collabo-

ration with neighborhood associations, local planning departments, potential business partners, local architects and SHC members. This means that there are high standards for the new co-op. The co-op would be LEED certified, meaning that great attention is paid to the construction process to make sure that the process saves money, resources, and has a positive impact on the health of the co-op members, while promoting renewable and cleaner energy. Gene Townsend, one of Lansing’s preeminent green builders and developers, has created a Pro-Forma Budget for the budget and will be advising the SHC as plans progress. More information on features of the new co-op can be found in the rest of the Physical Development Committee Report below.

“Mixed Use” refers to a mixture of commercial and residential uses for a building. For us this would mean a ground floor grocery run by the East Lansing Food Co-op, New rent free offices for the SHC, and possibly other commercial opportunities (maybe a cafe?).

These enterprises would offer both convenient services as well as job opportunities for co-op members. The potential grocery would be a great resource for our members and the East Lansing community as a whole and would greatly assist East Lansing in creating a culture that is more walkable and less car dependent.

“Universally Accessible” refers to creating a space that is accessible to people with disabilities. There is currently a dearth of opportunities for people with disabilities to live off campus.

This is an excellent and overdue opportunity for the SHC to expand it’s diversity and provide cooperative housing options for people with disabilities.”

“By building a new LEED certified building to house approximately 100 members the MSU SHC would be significantly lowering its carbon footprint and setting an example for the community. The ultra energy efficient structure would drastically reduce the energy use and utilities cost of each member. The structure would also allow the SHC to serve approximately 70 additional members, concentrating more students into the downtown area, helping to support walkable lifestyles.

The CCDP would be modeled after super co-ops such as College Houses in Texas, which are co-ops that house upwards of 100 members with multiple floors. Amy Roberts, a previous Bowerite, scoped out the co-ops in Austin, TX while she was on tour. She reported back that members have chores and the co-ops operate in the same fashion as SHC co-ops, but with adjustments such as having 3 meals a day and because of the large quantity of food

The SHC’s current assets are made up of aging and inefficient buildings with a limited lifespan. The CCDP would alter the makeup of the SHC’s assets by replacing older outdated and inefficient structures with a

being served, all kitchens needed to be ServSafe certified. She mentioned that all the members she talked to were very satisfied and happy with the super co-ops they were living in. Amy was also told that the large number of members has been beneficial for identifying members who can and want to dedicate more time to officer roles. Overall, though the size of the co-op was much larger than what she was used to, she understood the appeal of a super co-op and saw how it could encourage new groups of people to take on more cooperative living.

The Collective Seeds Consulting Cooperative was hired to examine the SHC finances and prepare a report on the financial feasibility of this project for the SHC. The report was concluded and it suggested that with a little planning the SHC would be able to finance CCDP and start construction in the 2016-2017 fiscal year with approval from SHC membership.

Future meetings concerning the CCDP will take place throughout the year and members will be encouraged to voice their concerns and advice to the SHC and their fellow members.

“We believe that the CCDP can be the co-op of the future. Upon completion the CCDP will be an example to both the local and national community of what a student run co-op can accomplish. It will provide a new face for the SHC in East Lansing and put us on excellent footing to move into the future.“

Apollo is unique because its culture is so young since being recolonized. The walls are still mostly blank canvasses — so stop on by, live here a while, and leave your legacy in these walls! This year the members have significantly improved the house by clearing out the basement rec room and adding a ping-pong table. Additionally, they have created a second living room. They also have an outside garden which they plan on expanding. Apollo’s advice to members of the SHC, both new and old, is to value the observations coming from new housemates because they might have fresher ways of seeing things. Most impotantly, be cooperative and never stop looking for ways to pour your energy and love back into the house and your fellow housemates.

The main word that could describe the David Bowie Memorial Cooperative would be “Home”.

Bowie is tightest family on the block that specializes in loafing around, brunch, and accepting the unaccepted. Every year we start off with a bunch of mismatch people who needed a good place to live for a couple of semesters, but we end the year with a million inside jokes, recipes, and

more love and support than we could have imagined. Our house enjoys laying in the living room watching Netflix, cooking and baking together, and last but not least dances parties in the living room. We excel in playing card games, building good bomfires and appointing sweet nicknames to those we love.

Overall we are just a bunch of weird people who happen to live in the same house and all feel a deep connection to the phrase “Bowie Love”.

!What is your house’s Fall Semester 2014 goals? !Bowie plans to kick off the fall semester right with obscene

amounts of brunches, bomfires, movie nights, and family dinners.

The best part of our house culture has always been our strong connection with Bowie Alumni, which we plan to continue on so that every old member feels right at home when they walk through the door. Our main goal is to take the best, most quirky parts of each of us and create a tight-knit and loving family that we’ll feel a kinship with for the rest of our lives.

!What are some of your house’s proposed events for Fall Semester 2014?

Murder Mystery dinner party with Apollo! The annual naked calendar photo, impromptu dance parties, card games of all kinds, and obnoxiously loud games of Zoomy Zoomy.

Hedrick House’s fall semester goals are to complete projects to improve the overall condition of the house. This includes a couple painting projects, making the finishing touches on our kitchen table, and finding a way to remove our ancient, giant TV from the basement. As always, Hedrick House will be hosting a wicked Halloween Party. Aside from that, our door are always open for fellow coopers to come and hang out!

Hedrick House is living proof of the efficacy and community feel that makes cooperative housing so enjoyable. We are like a family. Although we won’t always see eye to eye on everything, we are constantly challenging each other to be better, both individually and as a house. Hedroids are invested in improving our home for future co-opers, whether that be through our house projects or through the many unique and passionate personalities that live in Hedrick House.

Miles Davis

Built in the 1930s, 152 Collingwood had passed through many hands until SHC purchased it in 1976. Originally a part of Hedrick for ten years, the house was later associated with 146 Collingwood, called Key Largo (now Ferency), giving the house an understandable identity crisis.

Maintenance problems made vacancies a chief concern until the Asher Christian Scientists who had left Elsworth House moved into Miles Davis and made it one of SHC’s best properties. In 1991 they moved on, and the house was reopened as an SHC co-op named after jazz great Miles Davis.

In 2010, our vice president of maintenance began restoring the house to it original glory, piece by piece. The entire house now boasts beautifully restored 1920s hardwood where ancient carpet once lay. Gutting and dehumidifying the basement along with an overhaul of heating and ventilation systems and some new paint rendered Miles Davis a shining example of cooperative ownership, stewardship, and do-it-yourself-ism.

Other Miles Davis alumni have contributed by making cups and bowls, house artwork, and a bar, which now resides at New Community, a more congenial place for the fine piece of co-op craftsmanship.

In New Community, you will see a number of beautiful and bizarre things, become friends with fascinating people who can talk for hours, and you can get a taste of what it means to live with the responsibility of taking only what you give. It’s a community of admirable rascals and rebels who dared to venture out of the dorms and into the co-op jungle, where the walls reflect the world and you can climb onto the roof to see the stars! Some of the house activities include art shows, which showcase student pieces, and weekly games of “slap cup.” (inquire within) The perks of living here are the airlock, which features a mural space and indoor garden, the elevated deck with outdoor seating, and the company of many talented, free spirited individuals.

ORION

On the corner of M.A.C. and Elizabeth and recently renovated, Orion is comprised of 24 members. A mix of old and new, you can find us hanging out on the porch, cooking and eating house meals, playing with the kitties, or

heading out in a group to woody’s or to study. Ohaus is quiet and comfortable during the week, and lively and fun on the weekends. With about half the house as new members, we’re creating a new culture for ourselves and we want everyone to come hang out!!

Some goals for the Fall 2014 semester include: keeping the house clean, fixing up the house, good ol’ house bonding, to keep our meal plan going strong, and to get to know our neighbors. Some events Orion has planned: haus cider mill trip, a halloween party, and secret santa. To advance the co-op values, our house will work together, love, listen to, and respect each other, and be welcoming, open, and friendly to other houses.

Phoenix There are 29 Pheonicians living in Phoenix Haus during the academic year. With this many people, we have a very social household. There is always someone to hang out with. You could go to the field/courts to play sports at the park behind the house, or you can just play some ol’ fashioned corn hole out front. During the cold deadness of winter, there is still fun to be had. With a 42’ television, 3 classic gaming councils (n64, gamecube, dreamcast) and a never ending supply of couch space, our living room is the ideal chill room.

Raft Hill Raft Hill is focused on graduate students and upperclassmen that share a passion for learning, sharing knowledge and hanging out on porches. Once you walk into our cosy abode you will immediately feel the warmth and positivity in the air.

The love and acceptance in our house is more than most of us have experienced before, and it's bound to rub off on you! Other common pastimes include the occasional board game, Adventuretime (!), cooking and eating good food. Though many of us are scholastically minded, we enjoy hanging out together and tend to me a pretty tight knit group.

Also, we’re right next to Valley Court Park and Crunchies, so if you ever feel like tossing around a Frisbee or drinking some beer stop on by. We’ve got four stories in our house and a whole lot more in our hearts!

Toad Lane

At Toad Lane we call ourselves the Toads, because we're toad-ally friendly and can blend into any environment. Toad Lane is the smallest house in the SHC, so we're a tight-knit group of co-opers.

All of the members generally take officer positions as well as do house labor. This builds strong community in the SHC's smallest house! If you like the ideas of cooperative living but are seeking the simplicity of living with less people, our five person house has the best of both worlds. You can find us conveniently relaxing on our big porch, or cooking up a storm in our wonderful kitchen. The house is generally quiet, relaxing and study-friendly, but once in a while you'll hear music blaring through our living room speakers. Don't be shy, come over and dance with us @ 415 Ann St!

VESTA

Located at 505 MAC Ave, Vesta is just a short Þve minute walk from Grand River and MSUÕs campus. She is geographically centered in the 15 house co-op system, lovingly sandwiched between two other coops and just a block away from two more. She has 18 rooms Ð 4 doubles and 14 singles Ð and the capacity for 22 residents. While this may seem a large number, the generally spacious rooms and ample common space (a sizeable kitchen, living room, dining room/dance ßoor, and lounge) allow each Vestan plenty of room and the option to be as extroverted or introverted as they like. !

Vesta Co-op, named for the Roman goddess of the home, hearth, and family, offers a welcoming, friendly, and creative environment that attracts a diverse group of students and community members. The resulting variety in outlooks on life, interests, and talents is evident in the themes and execution of our many murals. In such a supportive and open environment, it is not uncommon to unload the dayÕs stresses with a housemate while cooking in the kitchen, or catch up while hanging on the stoop. Housemates bond and create habits surrounding shared interests while simultaneously learning new things from one another. VestaÕs delegation of jobs represents the pinnacle of cooperative living, in theory if not in practice. Like every co-op, Vesta has her faults and her charms, but she is worthy of love and an excellent introduction to the co-op life for new SHC members. !
