There are 4 girls and 23 boys. We have 8 singles, 11 doubles and a meal plan.

If you want to live at our house, we have room for 2 boys and 1 girl, or just 3 girls, which we wouldn't mind. I don't like having only 4 girls in the house, we need more.

There are 19 Americans, 1 Filipino, 1 Jamaican, 2 Koreans, 1 Taiwanese, 3 Germans.

We have Ethernet, and digital cable. The Phoenix house is located in the Historical District part of town. We are not allowed to do anything with the outside of the house, like repaint it, unless we have permission from the Historical District council.

Phoenix was born in 1994, but in 1998, an affiliation between SHC and Sigma Pi formed, giving them exclusive rights to Phoenix co-op. It wasn't until 2000, that the Phoenix re-colonized and Sigma Pi moved over to Orion.

We are a baby house, but we're growing, thanks to our house coordinators, Jim Bennett, Steve Marsh, and Damon Williams.

On Wednesday October 24, a new Barnes & Noble opened on Grand River at the old Jacobson’s location. The new location replaces the store that was located just beyond campus in Okemos.

Besides a book section that is almost twice the size of the old one, the new Barnes and Noble also has a café, a large children’s section and sells DVD’s, videos and CD’s. The music department will have listening stations where customers can search for and listen to any song and the café serves Starbuck’s coffee. Also, the children’s section will host a story hour (usually during the day).

As an employee of the café, I have been working at the Grand River location for the past several weeks helping in the efforts to be prepared for the Grand Opening. I have seen the two floors transform from an overwhelming sawdust and box-covered mess into an organized and relaxing haven for book lover’s, music lover’s and coffee lover’s to congregate.

Honestly, the new store is really exciting and I would recommend that you stop by whenever you have the chance.

Smoking—Kicking the Ol’ Habit By: Vikram Kamat

I remember back in middle school I was the biggest anti drug kid ever. I always said things like “I’m an athlete, I’ll never put drugs in my body.”

Boy have things changed. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m no crack head or anything like that, but I’ll just say that I have my share of vices i.e. Caffeine, Nicotine, and Alcohol. Two out of those three I don’t mind but let me just tell you, if I could go back in time I would’ve never took that first hit of my first cigarette. I hate smoking, but I’m addicted, and at this juncture in my life I don’t have to drive to quit.

My addiction isn’t as bad as others, I don’t get up in the middle of the night cause I need a cigarette or anything like that. But when I drink or if I’m in the presence of others who smoke, that is when I really carve.

Well, I did a bit of research on methods for kicking the ole habit (don’t hold it against me for doing research for the pine press <I don’t, Vik! Kel->) and I would like to share.

Method 1 Cold TurkeyI’m sure I don’t have to explain this all that much, it’s basically just stopping all at once without the help of another drugs or things like that, probably the toughest but also the cheapest. This method requires a lot of self-discipline and at this point in my life I don’t have too much, and what little I have is focused on school.

Method 2 AcupunctureThis has to do with placing needles in your scalp and ears to stimulate production of enkephalins, the chemical messengers found at the nerve endings. This method is supposed to override your bodies desire for nicotine. It costs about $200 dollars and is about 80% successful, practitioners say. Now, before you go doing this I would definitely recommend you do some more research. I’ll die of Cancer before anybody gets near my head with a dozen or so needles.

Method 3 and 4I’ve combined the last two because they’re pretty similar. Most of you know that being addicted to smoking has nothing to do with that actual smoke; it’s that damn nicotine.

Nicotine patches and gum puts doses of nicotine in your blood stream to kind of fool your body into thinking it’s having a cigarette. Gum costs about $34 for a pack of 96 and that patch is about $57 for a two-week supply. Studies show that the gum is about 40-50% effective while the patch is about 60%.

I, like many other people, say that as soon as the get out of college I’m going to kick the habit. I guess “they” say that if you smoke for like five or six years before the age of 27 and then you quit. By the time you reach 33-34 your risk for heart disease is the same as a person who’s never smoked, I’m banking on that.

I guess the best method for me would have to be cold turkey while others might enjoy getting needles put into their scalp. It would really help if my friends quit at the same time but I don’t see that happing.

For those of you trying to quite I wish you the best of luck. For those of you who are planning on quitting just as soon as you get out of school like me…smoke-um if you got-um.

How Taco Bell saved a life By: Valerie Krasny This was not through lowfat meals or some sort of “Jared inspired me to eat Gorditas” campaign.

No, the after affects of eating Taco Bell actually saved a life.

Home coming weekend is a time when friends and alumni come to E.L. to drink and reminisce.

This year I found myself in the Evergreen Grill with my dear friend Clay, an ex-co-worker and their friend Andy. The three of them went to high school together and I tagged along because of my alcohol addiction. Andy began to tell a story, and it was how Taco Bell saved his life.

He was out at the bar this one night with a bunch of his buddies and they were drinking a few brewskeys etc…

After the drinking was done it was routine to inhale drunk food such as Georgio’s or in this particular night’s case, Taco Bell.

After the greasy no-good “food” was eaten, the night was over and the men dispersed and made their ways home. Andy stumbled home to his apartment and passed out in his bed.

The next morning he was awoken from noises of some sort of domestic quarrel upstairs.

He could hear both the guy and woman screaming. Still drunk he got out of bed and went into his living room and sat in his Lazy Boy, still trying to come to terms with being half drunk at 9:30 in the morning.

And then it happened - the affects of ingesting Mexican on an alcohol stomach. Andy quickly hopped to the bathroom and became ill. After a few minutes he opened the bathroom door and began to make his way back to his sobering seat in the living room where upon he heard a gun shot and then a scream came from upstairs.

He returned to his living room to find that a bullet had been shot through his ceiling, though the chair in which he was sitting only moments before and into his living room floor.

And that my fellow co-opers is a true story of how Taco Bell saves.

Ours- Nov 17 at Erickson Kiva Released their debut album on Dreamworks, titiled "Disturbed Lullibies." You may have heard their first single “Sometimes" on the radio a few months ago or seen their video for this song on MTV. They can be compared to Radiohead or Travis, and toured with Pete Yorn for awhile on the MTV2.com tour.

This is their first headlining tour. Steve Lillywhite (Dave Matthews/Counting Crows) produced this album. For more info see-www.ours.net .

Howie Day- Dec 3 at the Union Ballroom This guy is amazing. He usually opens for John Mayer/O.A.R./Pat Mcgee band.

His debut CD is titled "Australia," and recently played at a U of M fraternity, drawing a huge crowd.

Basically it’s just him and his guitar, sometimes accompanied by a bass player. He will blow you away. Check out his site, www.howieday.com, or pick up his CD at www.awarestore.com.

His CD is on an independent label and his fan base has been increased mostly by word of mouth. This should be a sweet show with an intimate crowd. It’s predicted that people will be coming from all over for this cheap show.
