The Devolution of Cooperation An Editors note by Alex Ticu Dishes. At any co-op there are either too many dirty ones in the sink or not enough clean ones in the cupboards. For the Year and a half I have lived in the co-ops, dishes have been a (potentially) explosive issue at the root of more problems in the house than I would like to admit. Why? The answer lies in what is called the tragedy of the commons.

BIKES! (and how to get them cheap!) by With modern issues encompassing everything from global warming to high gas prices, cars are looking Kristen (!) less and less appealing. Bikes are looking better than ever.

Here's a list of places where you can get a bike without spending a lot of money.

MSU Surplus 1344 South Harrison, East Lansing (517)355-0364 These are bikes that have been impounded -- after the waiting period, if the owner doesn't claim them, they are sent to Surplus to be sold.

Sometimes they'll have rack after rack of bikes, and sometimes there are no bikes at all. So phone ahead to check before you go.

When they do have bikes, the majority will be in the $25-$50 price range. Most of them will be in reasonably good condition, because they were recently used.

MSU Surplus is open to the public on Tuesdays from 7:30-5:30, and Fridays from 7:30-3:30.

Garage sales This is a great time of year for going to garage sales -- and what garage sale is complete without a bike or two hiding near the back?

Prices and quality will vary widely, but you could end up with a fantastic bike for $15 if you're patient enough to look for it.

Websites such as Craigslist and AllMSU are another good place to look for people who are selling their bikes.

Pawnshops These are used bikes, usually in the $30-$70 price range. Some of them will need a LOT of repair work, others will be just fine as is. If you find a bike you like and it needs some repair work, remember that prices at pawnshops are often negotiable -- if you can point out the flaw with the bike, you can often get them to lower the price.

Two local pawnshops that tend to have bikes: Dicker & Deal 710 E Kalamazoo St (517)487-3325 Usually has 100+ bikes, which you will find hanging upside-down from the ceiling.

Capitol Discount & Secondhand 2409 E. Michigan Ave (517)484-9400 Usually has 10-30 bikes. Very close to Frandor shopping center.

All used bikes should be safety-checked, to make sure there are no dangerous problems. MSU Bikes (432-3400) is one place that can perform a bicycle safety check.

Do not buy a new bike from a place other than a bike shop. Stores like Meijers sell new bikes cheap, but they are often assembled in-store by people who are NOT bike mechanics, and do not know how to properly and safely assemble a bicycle. I tried buying bikes from Meijers twice, and both times wound up returning them within a month due to brake failure resulting from improper assembly. With the second bike, my brakes failed rather suddenly, resulting in me almost ending up in the middle of Grand River traffic. So if you want a brand new bike, go to a real bike shop. If you can't afford to do that, you're better off buying used, because at least then you know the bike has been ridden for a while without any major catastrophes.

One final idea, if you'd rather not deal with the hassle of buying and maintaining a bike, is to rent one.

Put G.I. Hetero-Joe in the Closet! By Jeron Jackson This issue’s queer rant is about the U.S. military’s policy of “Don’t ask, don’t tell, don’t pursue.”

While running for president in 1993, the “great and honorable” Bill Clinton made a promise to his nonheterosexual citizens. If he was elected to office all citizens, regardless of sexual orientation or identity, would be allowed to serve openly in the military.

This promise in order to get the non-heterosexual vote was a complete 180 from the previous military ban on nonheterosexual entry into the military.

As most oppressed people should know by now, queer-positive political rhetoric and empty promises will get you nowhere in Washington, D.C., or the rest of heterosexist America for that matter.

Clinton’s proposal witnessed heavy criticism from Republican and Democratic Congresspersons and citizens.

However, Clinton was able to work out a compromise that is known as “Don’t ask, don’t tell” or DADT. The compromise dictated that the military would no longer ask recruits about their sexual activity, orientation, and/or identity, would not investigate any serviceperson’s sexual activity, orientation, and/or identity without “solid evidence” (thus supposedly preventing witchhunts), and self-identified nonheterosexual servicepersons would agree that they would not engage in non-heterosexual sex acts, or do anything that announces that they are a nonheterosexual, i.e. public statements, events, or participate in a same-sex

Do you perhaps want to try the most delicious treat ever?

Here it is: RAW CHOCOLATE BANANA ALMOND MILKSHAKE It tastes like a real milkshake (no joke), but you can have it for breakfast and not feel like a grossout. It's also got a lot of protein and can keep you sustained for a long time, even when it is hot outside and you're working hard. And it will probably help you poop!

And it is very easy to make, here is how: Disclaimer: I don't use measurements, but you shouldn't need them to make this, just taste it as you go to figure out if you like it, and make enough to fill yourself up.

1. Get some bananas. They should be very ripe, so maybe you can get them from the dumpster, because they are very ripe when they go in the dumpster. If not, make sure they get ripe before you freeze them, like sort of brown. This will make your milkshake really creamy.

2. Peel the bananas and break/cut them up and put them in your freezer. They will be all the way frozen in 12-24 hours.

3. Put some of your frozen banana pieces in the blender along with the following ingredients: - a little cinnamon - a little vanilla - a dollop of raw almond butter, or any nut butter you have on hand (except maybe tahini, I tried it once and it was gross) - cocoa powder to taste.

- a pinch of salt (believe it) - some cold water, enough to make the shake move around in your blender and be as thick or thin as you like it) - some sweetener, like maple syrup or agave nectar, if you want it sweeter.

4. Blend it. Drink it.

If you don't want it to be chocolate, you can take out the cocoa powder and leave it as is, or maybe add GINGER and CLOVES. It is equally delicious this way.

Also if you just want ice cream just blend up the frozen bananas without any extra liquid. I would use the food processor for this. This is called BANANA SCREAM!! You can put in any extra secret treats you want, like cacao nibs or mint or cherries.

If you don’t feel like making your own banana shake, we can hang out and I'll make one for you.

Perfect For Summer Love, Nora (Bower)

Movie anyone?

Ever wonder what to do on those oh-so-frequent rainy days we have been having lately? Nothing beats the rainy weather like a good movie! Of course you could always enjoy a hit box office film that you have seen countless times, but why not watch something new!

Layer Cake Based off of the novel by JJ Connolly, this movie follows the main character, played by Daniel Craig, around England on his last job in the drug running business. As the plot thickens he must find a missing girl and dodge a Serbian hit man. This movie is a must see, in fact, you will probably want to see it twice.

The Darjeeling Limited This Wes Anderson movie is about three brothers who travel across India on a train to reunite with each other. Their train tip ends early due to several incidents involving poisonous snakes and pepper spray. As with every Wes Anderson film, the soundtrack to this movie is amazing and is worth watching even if your TV is broken.

Tenacious D HBO Episodes Sure, the new Tenacious D movie wasn't all that great but did you know there is a set of six episodes that were shown on HBO before the greatest band on Earth became famous? These episodes include never before heard songs, such as Rocket Sauce and Sasquatch, among many others. Through these 6 short episodes you will learn about how Jack and Kyle wrote their songs, how they deal with obsessive fans, and how they saved Jesus Ranch from the health department.

Control Room This documentary takes an interesting look at news coverage of the war in Iraq from the perspective of Al Jazeera. Al Jazeera is one of the only news networks in the Middle East with virtually 100% freedom of speech. Throughout the documentary, the differences between of reporting between US networks and Al Jazeera are shown. This movie goes a long way to show how news can be spun in many ways by people of varying opinions.

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow This movie is one-of-a-kind, done entirely in front of a green screen, this movie mixes live actors, including Jude Law and Angelina Jolie, with entirely computer generated scenes. Watch as Sky Captain tries to save the world from the evil Dr. Totenkopf and his robot army. If movies from the 1940s were produced today, this is exactly what they would be like.

Network Don't remember this movie going to theaters? That probably because you weren't born in 1976 when it was released. After news anchor Howard Beale learns he is being fired due to low ratings, he declare he will kill himself on air the next week. As Beale spirals towards insanity ratings skyrocket. Beale is exploited by the network, becoming the centerpiece of the top rated show on television.

The Constant Gardener After activist Tessa Quayle is killed her husband Justin, an English diplomat to Kenya, is determined to find out who killed her and why. Based loosely on drug companies unethical actions in Africa, Justin learns about the secret life of his wife and the corruption inside a big drug company.

While some of these movies are more popular than others, hopefully there is something you haven't seen before on this list. With any luck, you might actually find that you like one of them!
